Default Tunerstudio is now 40$ or am I missing something?

Got a new laptop today and installed the latest version of TS and it won't let me use VE Analyze unless I pay $39.95... did I miss something.. or download a wrong version?

Just wanted to add that I feel it's worth every cent and I support the developers, just confused as I hadn't seen any news of this. Am I the first to download this version???

that business plan usually sounds good "Give it away for free and get everyone hooked, then start charging, yay profit".

I'll probably pay too (i did always wonder why these betas 'expired'), but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.. I understand that what he was giving away has value, but my decision to use it was also on the preconception that it was free.. now i've made some investment in switching over from megatune, so i kind of feel bait-and-switched.

Who knows, maybe he'll make a pretty penny on it. $40 sounds a little high though..

I got the update last night but I denied it because I was in a hurry. No more updates for me!

You can only ignore them for so long before program is disabled, right? I could swear that I have been forced to update in the past or TS wouldn't work at all.

This sucks. Not an expense I had planned on dealing with right now but I guess i'll have to buck up. It is a really good piece of software. Anyone know how many installs you get per 40 bucks?

the website has always said you have to buy it IIRC, but the betas have been free

just like beta testing a video game....

note the "buy tunerstudio now!" link that isnt a link... assuming that will become a link once 1.0 is done

I registered (paid) and honestly I think this version runs a lot smoother. I could be crazy and making myself feel better about paying. I don't know. Either way I hope he reinvests the money into making this program even better.

IMO if you consider how cheap MS is and how much money we put into other things, $40 is a drop in the bucket especially for well written tuning software

From all the good things I've heard about tunerstudio, I have no doubt that I'd pay for it in a couple weeks when I install my MS.

I do completely agree. Its just tough when you're used to having your tuning software for free and then all of a sudden its another 40 bucks you weren't planning on spending [which is a lot when you're poor].

Its not like TunerStudio is your only option, megatune still works (or kind of works) if you're really that cheap. Software development takes so much time that i completely understand and i'll definitely pony up when the time comes.

But i'm going to put it off to the very last minute

Megatune doesn't work for MS2/3.0.3/sequential. I don't like what Phil Tobin is doing; giving away the program for free first, then charging for it later. He did the exact same thing with Megalogviewer.

At least from what I can tell megalogviewer is free, you just have to deal with the registration pop up thing.

I think it makes sense what he did, give it away for free so there are a lot of people testing the beta giving feedback to make a well rounded and finished product. idk. I just hope this means we can look forward to more features and quicker updates.

I don't see where the problem is - it was always known that thiis the beta stage for free.

And I really think this is not paying out his expenses he had to develop such a beautiful piece of software. I registered yesterday and think I don't mind a single (euro)cent I spend for this...

Let me start by saying that I don't mind paying for useful things and I'm not trying to save $40. So far I have purchased an MS1, an MS2, a DIYPNP, an MS3 and a GPIO; money is not issue. I just wish that he had made it clear from the start that in the future, the software is going to be paid-for. Megalogviewer was always free and there was never even a slight hint that someday it will not be free (as in beer). Personally, I find it unfair for James+Ken+Jean, who have contributed at least as much (if not twice) the time and effort to develop the MS1/MS2/MS3 embedded code, because their code is free (as in speech and as in beer) and they don't even accept donations (I have asked both James and Ken in the past and they have rejected any donations).

I hate "vendor lock-in". Think about it. If Phil decides tomorrow that TS will not work *at all* if not registered, you are fucked. Megatune no longer works with MS2/Extra 3.0.x...

Dimitris

That's what I'm thinking. I'd be screwed. I'm broke as a joke right now. Hopefully that won't happen.

In Phils defence, you really need to understand the term "beta" and "test". A Beta is offered up for free and it's your choice to use it or not - for FREE! Feedback from the betas are then relayed to the developer and improvements are made to future beta versions until the day that a FULL release is made that is 99.9% free of bugs and issues.

How many software packages do you use that are Ver 0.xxx?

Anyway, stump up the $40 - Phil deserves it. The amount of praise just on this forum for TS is exceptional.

Ken likes donations of lunch in exchange for his knowledge. I tried money, beer, and blow and Ken did turn those down.

Being an open source developer myself and an almost exclusive Linux user for 15 years now, I have used more alpha, beta, pre-* and rc-* packages than you can think of. I know what an alpha or beta version is. He should have still made it clear from the beginning that he was going to charge for it when it reached V1.0. We now all depend on this software, I wouldn't mind if MegaTune still worked. Btw I *did* anticipate that this was going to happen, based on my experience with MLV: https://www.miataturbo.net/megasquirt-18/tuner-studio-ms-32303/#13

I can understand all your points of view - I just wanted to say - I spend such an rediciulous amounts of money into this car, these are 40$ well spent.
