Have you thought about contacting one of the developers of a smart phone 'track' app? Harry from Harry's Laptimer Pro is actively working on new features and could integrate a simple bluetooth module reporting the sensor values into the iphone and the lap data logging. Having an affordable niche hardware product like this could be a real win/win for everyone except the guys trying to sell $5k systems.
