I would enjoy both, but Im afraid I wouldnt be able to afford both. Im still interested in the bluetooth adapter if its still available seperately. What would you want for it/them?

I'm only half joking, I'll probably still with d up using it to log on the dyno or during non NASA events.

Some warning would have been nice, instead of this flying out of left field.

Edit: worth mentioning, this also affects cars with Bluetooth from the factory. As in, lots of newer cars. I'm guessing they didn't really grasp the implementation of this before it went into effect.

I feel ya there. I have a feeling that they will be revisiting this rule, based on what you have said. especially the part about cars with bluetooth from the factory. That being said, It still makes sense to me why they wouldnt want someone having that within the car. Change tune, change other things about the car as they are going through tech. etc..

Acer Iconia Tab A500. You can buy them for almost nothing. Full USB port on the tablet itself. However, it's a 10", which may be problematic for fitting.

We use the N7 as a datalogging device on the McLaren dev car. There are native FTDI drivers that will work with the same usb->serial cables that most people use for tuning their MS. You will need a OTG host adapter cable, but as midpack said, they are a dime a dozen (making one is incredibly easy as well).

We were also worried about the 'battery-as-an-explosive thing' since a burning battery = 300k brick, so we just hacked ours up. Drilled a hole in the back cover, removed the battery, and wired in a 5v supply directly to the battery contacts which has a 12v cig lighter plug. Works like a ******* boss.

The only issue is that you have to shut it down completely before turning off your car since there is no battery backup. Our testers learned that the hard way when it corrupted it's firmware :|.

We use it for logging serial data from a few different systems in the car. Seems to work pretty well and I haven't heard any complaints from the guys who work in the testing lab.

Jeff could you post up where you got the FTDI driver for the Nexus 7 from and any other info about getting it all working that you have. I have sent Phil Tobin and email about the rule change and how you have gotten serial logging working. Hopefully getting USB support in shadow dash is something he is willing to add for us.

Between you and the South Texas guys, it sounds like this solution is working out pretty well. I didn't realize the OTG host setup was this well flushed out already. Sounds awesome. Are you just logging from High speed OBDII/CAN -> reader -> OTG host then to OBDII reader software and logging to local memory?

A quick look online for the Nexus 7 shows the thermal limit at 100C (CPU temp) and a throttle temp of 85C (CPU temp). This particular tablet apparently has very effective dissipation such that the cpu rises only a few degrees above ambient which is not the case for many tablets. So, yea take out the battery, don't overclock the thing and it should be great.

I would suggest SetCPU, as it allows you to over and under clock, also set up heat targets to change the clock as you see fit.

I have confirmed with Phil Tobin that he is working on a USB version of Shadow Dash. So this will get us around that pesky no wireless rule.

Sounds like Phil is already on it, but we actually used a serial logging app that came bundled with the driver, didn't even need root. You can acquire it from their website (FTDI Drivers) But YMMV on getting it installed on your device.


It's a bit simpler than that, we're logging from our electronics -> A small FTDI breakout board -> OTG host-> Serial datalogger. It 'just works' for the most part, although we do see a very occasional glitch in the data (not sure if it's on the application side or the serial driver in our box that is the cause, not my dept though)

Extremely jelly. Probably my favorite supercar. The description the magazines give of the sounds of the turbos and the V8... lotsa boost... comfy to drive and brutally fast... and for this year, up to 618 hp... Drool.

Tablet has wireless. Tablet is connected to ECU. You might still have an issue. I guess you could pull the wireless antenna out of the tablet.

Doesnt connect to the ECU wirelessly though.

Who am I kidding, they will probably just update the rule wording in March.
