Just followed the guide on here to replace the rear wheel bearing without a press, but made one change that I thought would be worth sharing.

Instead of tapping the new bearing in with a hammer and using the old one to whack it in, I put the new bearing in the freezer overnight.

Then did this. Might be worth skipping to about 2:30.



I was expecting to have to put at least a bit of effort in. But this was quite a surprise. You could do this with the upright still in the car. Science, bitches.

For reference, the grease I wiped on is marine grade lithium, as it doesn't melt.

Anyway, hope this helps someone out.

Old trick. Used to do this with crankbearings on my scooter. Put the bearings in the fridge overnight, heat up the crankcase in the oven for a while and everything drops right into place.

To get the right sloppy "plop" sound when it drops in.

Lowering the chances of it getting stuck skewed half way can't hurt.

Freezing spray works as well, if you don't have a freezer in your trailer.

It was such a small amount of grease, it was barely a sheen. Just to help it go in, it won't affect it in any way. After a few minutes of it being in and the temps balanced out they were in nice and tight.

I've used a can of freon to do this in a pinch before. It's illegal and not cheap but works if your on a time constraint and don't have access to a press.

It's not normal grease, it has some sort of anti seize compound in it according to the tube. I wouldn't use normal grease - it would probably go crusty and bind up with the heat.

A wee bit of time wasted on pulling bearing out of box and bag, a wee bit of time in applying anti-seize, too much localized heating for my taste. I just circle the torch around slightly slowing at thicker areas.

Overall awesome video. Wish I had the patience to video my work.
