Ok, sooooo... Update time

This is what we know about all currently sold, and current model oil pump gears.

The oil pump gears width clearance (side clearance) has been set between .005-.006 depending on wear and how perpendicular your housing is. Thats just what we made them. This is completely acceptable as we've seen housings running on .011 clearance without problems of oil flow, or pressure. Yes its at the edge of the design requirement from factory but this greatly increases the capacity of the fluid bearing to keep the gears off the wall of the oil pump housing which is soft... soft aluminum.

Second.

Y8's housing with some wear recorded .006 with the new gears cut. That seems to be on task with what we want. The big thing I want to point out is the disturbing amount of wear in these housings. Y8's housing, and Abe's housing has shown a lot of wear. I believe both housings were under 40k miles and they were in worse shape then a pre-vvt oil pump at 200k miles. I'm not talking about a little bit either, if you tried to run a VVT oil pump for 150k miles as stock from the factory, I doubt it would make it. If your running one of these VVT housings, I would definitely say you should change the gears to a wider clerance gear then factory or you'll be in the same shape these guys are in. Questionable housings with bad wear patterns.

I have the 01-up replacements and I'm happy with the end product. So these are going out today. Please, please, letme know your clearances that you measure when you install these.

what was the clearance of the OEM gears in my/abe's housing?

I believe yours was .004 and then it tapered to .006, abes was at .004 and tapered to .009. Around the edges theres not much wear, but right where the teeth are these housings are really getting chewed on.

Any progress on the 2001+ gears? I'm still waiting for mine.

TravisR 02-23-2009 04:38 PM

Modern, I had thought I'd already sent yours, letme check my records again. Sorry for the delay!!

y8s 02-23-2009 08:11 PM

HEY that reminds me, what's the story on my pump and gears? you mentioned my wear was an issue, but with the right clearance gears, is it going to last a while? and if so, when ya gonna send it all back? :)

TravisR 02-24-2009 12:58 AM

Heh, jeeze modernbeat, start a riot why don't you?? :) j/p I think he's still poking at yours, I'll ask him tomorrow.

so are the billet gears really worth it??? i mean what are the chances that the stock ones will fail?? besides how many vendors have them??

Travis, I'm not in any hurry. I'm just afraid I'll forget if I dont get them back within, say, a couple months?

I'm the only vendor that has them for under $400. :giggle: Failures are reasonably common on high horsepower and high RPM vehicles. Your engine will basically last about 3 seconds in highload conditions. The damage is almost immidiate, and it usaully destroys the block.

I'll have your pump back to you soon. It won't take much longer.

Modernbeat, could you please PM me your name and address?

Travis

What's going on? I sent you my address on the 24th.

TravisR 03-09-2009 09:37 PM

I sent them on Friday I believe. USPS w/delivery comp and insurance. I had to check through my records, I'm actually usually aloft somewhere too, so getting to everything is sometimes a task in my limited time w/my hard copy records. The whole reason it took longer then expected is also because of the oil pump housing wear. We're not sure on where these housings should be. Make sure you check them when you install them for proper fit. We've seen housings with over 10 thousandths of wear. The factory housings are not made properly they are too soft. So I was apprehensive about sending these out to anyone, but here they are.

trav, what about laser cutting a wear plate to fit in under the gears?

TravisR 03-11-2009 03:26 PM

Thats the really expensive way to do it, I had that priced, and ouch! We have another way we are considering, but the price for the assembled unit is going up and up with these teaks. I think the retail might be 300-330 if I do what I have in mind to the housing to foreverize it.

what is turn around time on a '99 gear? I let my friend use his and just decided to pull my motor and put these in...with much dismay.

Ready to ship!

I just tried to email Boundary off their website, but got an error message. can someone email me their phone number? I need to buy a set of gears for my time attack car. The stock ones gave up and ruined an engine. I don't just want to input my credit card info into a website without having spoken to someone first.

Your fully built FM stroker with 76mm turbo was using stock oil pump gears?

wow

Keith@FM 04-21-2009 03:35 PM

I don't believe there were any decent gears on the market at the time the engine was built, and the ATi wasn't yet available.

JasonC SBB 05-09-2009 12:15 PM

What's the latest scoop on the factory '01 pump gears? Are they higher volume than the earlier ones?
