Default 2017 it's time to start the car up again (vvt in 95 miata)

Hey everyone,

I thought it would be a good idea for me to start a build thread to get the car going. The car has been sitting for 2 years since the last rebuild.

Engine was rebuild again with mostly oem parts, aside from the small things. It's a 01-05 vvt (bp6d) jdm motor with BE upgraded oil pump and supermiata crank damper/36-2t trigger wheel.

The car is ready to be started, however I cranked it last week but to find out that my oem oil cooler seal is damaged and it sprayed oil everywhere. Just got a new one in but still no start.

I'll attach the tune file hopefully I can get some suggestions where to look. I notice I haven't been getting fuel inside the head so I'm trying to troubleshoot it first. As far as I know for vvt swaps, it's the fuel line closest to the firewall, to the fuel rail, then regulator goes to return line. Is there a way to check injectors with megasquirt or am i way ahead of myself?

1.) Pretty car.
2.) Yes there is an injector test mode in tunerstudio, I believe under the canbus tab

Thanks!

I have attached some screenshots from the settings. Shouldn't my fuel setting be semi or full sequential? I thought 1.8l doesn't run batch fire.

Sequential yes.
Try messing with rising edge / falling whatever. My miatas have used either for whatever reason, I am not an expert.

Here's an update. I'm getting spark and fuel. When I crank I got a loud pop once. Are my coils reversed? I switched it around and no pop anymore

Silly question, but did you add wires from your ECU to the additional two injectors for sequential? otherwise you need to go back to batch injection. Second you need to find out why its not sparking, or sparking when it needs to. The car will pop and seem like its trying to start even if the firing order is not correct. Hell, I have seen the motor run on 2 cylinders with the plugs wires all goofed up. So you need to check the firing order and ensure the basics are good first (correct injection, spark and spark timing). Then worry about the other stuff (VVT, VE tables and spark advance). Otherwise you will never get to idle tuning, warm up enrichment and so on.

Hi Evolforce2,

I just emailed Dimitris and he did told me that the supermiata trigger wheel is not supported for sequential injection. I'm back to batch fire now but still no go. Is there any advice on how to check correct injection, spark and spark timing?

The car doesnt' pop now at all during cranking.

Are you running MS2 or MS3? In Tuner Studio the last tab to the top right is a "CanBus" tab where you can test the spark and injector channels in the car. Then you can determine if 1 and 4 or 2 and 3 are firing and if the injection cycle is phased correctly or same as spark. If both spark and injection is good, then see if it is 180 degrees out in the software. I have not upgraded to the crank mounted Crank angle sensor yet, but with the stock cam mounted CAS with an MS3X i have full sequential injection and spark. So maybe you can try the stock CAS? When i first started i also had an issue with the sensor calibration. They were way off. So i had to re-calibrate all the sensors, especially the MAP. The posted log looks like there was a TPS to 100% for flood clear, but the vacuum looks weak or the MAP sensor is not cal'ed correctly.

we figured it out! Our timing was off because the engine builder installed the exhaust cams incorrectly. It's now started up but no time to follow up because we have 2 new kittens in the family
