Very nice build! I actually live in Murfreesboro myself near campus and would love to come see this beauty in person! Let me know if you ever need any help with anything!

Midtenn 04-30-2014 05:52 PM

Sure. I'm on the north side of the county line. Right now I'm just tearing down another parts car, so let me know if you need anything. If everything sells quickly I'll be getting TSE brake kit to install.

Ptotherice 04-30-2014 10:24 PM

I actually saw your parts car and am quite sad that I don't have enough cash to pick up your 1.8 right now! I'm going to shoot you a PM with my number and we can hang out sometime. I just picked up my first Miata last weekend, very excited!

EDIT! Just kidding... I can't PM yet. Shoot me an email at ptotherice@gmail.com.

I took my car to Atlanta Motorsports Park back in March to run with the Music City Mustang Club. I had a blast chasing down cars with nearly triple the horsepower (in one case six time), but AMP is definitely a handling course. My best friend brought out his 2011 Mustang GT Brembo Pack. I never had to turn a wrench on my car besides some adjustments and tuning. We had to rig an axle catch can on his car using a Gatorade bottle.

I was hoping my best friend would have uploaded his GoPro footage by now. Maybe I'll just buy my own.

The AMP trip was also the last towing trip for my trusty '97 F150 5.4L. She's been sold to someone else to tow their weekends toys. I picked up a new tow vehicle.

I comes with two turbos to replace the one I removed from my Miata

2014 F150 FX4 w/ 3.5 EcoBoost V6. Damn near fully loaded just to get the towing package I wanted, but its far more comfortable and quiet compared to my '97. Plus a 36 gallon tank means my bladder goes shorter than my gas tank.

All clean and ready for the next track day:

Now to resist the urge to fall back into my drifting days...

My wife had the same reaction. Not towing, the computer starts at 650 miles. I've been averaging a little over 19 mpg on my daily commute. I only fill it every two weeks or so.

My dad's 09 that we tow the racecar with with has a 35. Range between fill ups while towing at 75mph on the highway is about 500 miles with the 3V 4.6 and 6 speed tranny.

Been some time since an update. It was a busy summer for me, but I was finally able to make another track day. I finally made it to Road Atlanta after almost 10 years (and 3 different cars) of saying I was going to.

I decided to do an event with Chin Motorsports because I've never really had an instructor for a track day. I knew I had a lot to learn and auto-x habits to unlearn. The week before was a thrash to get the car ready with the in-laws in town and just getting back from a week in Denmark on business.

The instructor was very helpful. I wish I had a lap timer to see where I improved. By the end of the weekend I was able to tickle the rev limiter in 4th going into the turn 1 consistently (5 speed and 4.30 final). I was also able to get everything down to just two shifts. Turn's 1 and 7 took me the longest to figure out (over driving the braking points) and turn 12 is a blast when you get it right.

My best friend came along to take some photos.

Turn 10a: The Camaro ahead of me was all over the place and never on a line that made sense.

Turn 12
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418150911

My favorite:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418150911

The only problem of the weekend was that oil consumption/loss. All the evidence points to the rings letting go. As evident by the picture, I was smoking pretty good going from high vacuum (lift) to on throttle.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418150911

Good part is that it survived the weekend and didn't need the deck winch to get back on the trailer.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418150911

I'm going to pull the motor next weekend and tear it down to see what caused the failure. All the seals in the head were replaced, so hopefully I can just get away with truing the sealing surface up and honing the cylinders. If I have to bore it, I'll go up to 11:1 pistons and rods (budget allowing).

Winter position has been assumed. 3rd year in a row that the car is parked for the winter. I started pulling the motor but I got distracted by a the wife's IS300. 209k on the clock and it is getting its 3rd timing belt, water pump, and front seal set. I'm so glad this modern car has a motor that can still be maintained by a shade tree mechanic. Now I want to find a 5spd model for my daily driver and swap in a 2JZ-GTE from an Aristo for a street sleeper.

I went over to a friend of mine with a lot of experience in tearing down and inspecting motors. We found that the motor got some water into while sitting and there was some corrosion in the bores. It also looks like I might have installed the valve seals incorrectly last winter. The corrosion on the cylinder walls scored the pistons pretty bad, so I'll be ordering new pistons. Probably going to 84mm 11:1's.

The only head scratcher we run into was a some odd wear on both of the cams. I've started another thread to see what could be causing this. The tip of the cams have some brown/tan areas. Some have grey areas inside the tan area that when you look at under a manginifying glass, you can see what looks like galling of the top layer. There also appears to be some "chattering" on the back side of the ramp.

Looks like the cams had some corrosion too, but they seem to be holding up just fine. I get those "brown/tan" areas even on brand new cams. They are low spots in the grind. The "gray areas" are where you probably had some corrosion from the same water that hurt your cylinder walls.

I was looking at the photos I took of the head and I can see that the tan discoloration was there last year. Unfortunately all my pictures are low res because I took them with an old point-shoot camera so I can't tell if the grey patches are there. I'll take with the machine shop and see what their thoughts are. I've decided on the 84mm 11:1 pistons, so hopefully I'll have everything to them next week. I might even talk to them about doing an offset bore, but I have to do a little research on it first.

Midtenn 01-16-2015 01:49 PM

I sent some pictures of my cams out for a second opinion and they came back bad as well. However, thanks to the change in Spec Miata rules regarding the cylinder head and the short radius, I'm picking up a brand new "formerly legal" head for 60% of what it would have cost a few months ago. 25cfm increase in flow which the seller states its was worth about 8-10hp on their motors.

Greasemonkey2000 01-16-2015 03:59 PM

2JZ swaps are always cool, IMO, look forward to the progress! I really like the grey paint, is it like "battleship grey" or?

I got the block and crank back from the machine shop. Everything looked good so a friend and I go busy putting the short block together. He's got all the fancy tools for checking clearances and bolt stretch. I added a set of Manley rods to the build for good measure too. Just needs a fresh coat of paint and once the ARP head studs come in, on goes the head.

I use my phone to stream Pandora in the garage, so I never think to get pictures until I'm packing up for the evening. Last weekend, with a the help of a friend, I got the motor dropped in and wired the COP's for sequential firing. I also eliminated a "sub-harness" that I thought was going to be helpful but really just made the wiring too damn long.

Turned the motor over a few times without fuel get oil up into the motor. As soon as I prime the fuel pump I get a whiff of gas. Well once I get the motor started gas is pouring out of the #3 injector. Guess I should have ordered those o-rings when I thought about it. Even though I never removed the fuel injectors from the rail, the o-ring was fubared.

So wait a few days due to the weather and work to get the injectors pulled, new o-rings, spacers, and grommets. Prime the pump and its good to go. Fired the motor up and let it come up to temp with no issues. I accidentally left my plate on a car I sold, so now I have to wait for it to come back before I can start putting some miles on the motor. I did do a little break-in work around the neighborhood and the mid range feels much stronger so far. Hopefully I'll get it on a dyno before my first track day in May.

It has been a busy past few months. I put about 1000 break in miles on the new motor. The only problem was a VVT actuator that failed a week before a track day at Atlanta Motorsports Park on Memorial Day weekend. So an overnight delivery the day before the event got me back in running order. The new found power really made a difference. Unfortanely I still haven't setup a lap timer in the car. That and running on 6 year old Toyo R1R's really put a damper on the lap times (somewhere in the 1:37-1:38 range based on following others with lap timers).

Also during that time I officially joined a Chump Car team. My first task was to turn it from a "red Miata" to something more recognizable. After some discussion we decided to play a little psycological game and paint the car different on opposite sides of the car. With all the late night hours I forgot to get good photos of the car before it was finished.

This weekend was our first race of the year and the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park for a Double 7. On Friday I got in for the 2nd stint. With only 4 laps in the car at the AMP track day, never driving the track, and first time wheel-to-wheel racing, my only goal was to keep from making an ass of myself and keep it clean. After about 30mins I was within 1 sec of the teams fast times last year. At the end of the day we finished up in 5th place (with 6 place right on our bumper) and a Class A win.

The 2nd race started smoothly. I took the 2nd stint again and was able to move us up a few spots in the ranking and take over a second off my personal best (1:46.33). The last 45 mins of my stint I was keeping the lead car behind me (without any dirty moves, just using traffic to my advantage). After my stint, our 2 fastest drivers got in the car and moved us up to 3rd place. We pushed hard but just ran out of time and pulled back to save the car. The only contact of the weekend happened in the last 30min when the 5th place E30 didn't see us along side and they went mirror to mirror and messed up my fresh paint job. Then in impound the leading car was bumped to EC for running Ford EV injectors, so officially we finished 2nd. Our best finish ever for the team.

Barber Track Day prep:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439832614

The morning before the drama:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439832614

Well yesterday I got to join the prestigious broken throttle shaft club. While doing a track day at Barber Motorsports Park, coming out of the "corkscrew" I matted the throttle and then I felt it go a little further with a little "pop". I though maybe something had gotten under the throttle (had the fuse box cover come off the day before). There was a little more vibration in my foot, but I thought that was just where the pedal was against the floor.

I finished my session and started inspecting the TPS wiring (an intermittent issue) when I noticed the throttle return springs didn't look right to me. While trying to move them, this happened:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439832614

Pulled the intake in hopes the epoxy on the screw kept it attached the shaft with no luck...
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439832614

I pulled the upper intake as well and didn't see anything. I loaded the car up for the trip home. When I got home I pulled the spark plugs and the #3 plug gap is less than the other 3. After some hindsight, I had the motor idling while inspecting the TPS wiring and I didn't notice any metallic "tinking" noises while it was running. I'm hoping the screw is sitting some where safe or it went through-and-through with minimal damage. I'm going to borrow a boroscope this week and check all the cylinders. I didn't feel any power loss and still a ran a lap within .6sec of my fastest from the day before. Fingers crossed...

Where did you purchase that rb2 replica bumper? I'm having trouble finding it, places that list it want 185 dollars for shipping, making it nearly $500 for a rep.

I borrowed a boroscope from a friend and removed the intake manifold to only find a small piece of the throttle plate screw in the resonance camber. I also found some damage to the top of the #3 piston as well. After I checked everything out and life got busy (Chump Car races, business trip to Australia, and a vacation in California). Finally blocked up a few evenings the last two weeks to wrap everything back up. I fixed the TPS wiring with a new connector from Ballenger. I fired it up this evening and adjusted the new to me throttle body and IACV. Runs just as good as before. Tomorrow I'll do a compression and leak down tests.

Midtenn 12-06-2017 02:01 PM

Its hard to believe it's been over two years since I've updated this thread. Not too much has changed on the car. Mostly just small updates, changes, and maintaince.

2016:
Upgraded to a S2 throttle body and ported my flat top intake. Took the time to clean up some of the castings flash as well.
https://images2.imgbox.com/2f/8c/TDsjGQTf_o.jpg

I did a track day with Mustang Club of America at Atlanta Motorsports Park and made it into their coverage for the 2nd year:
https://images2.imgbox.com/06/6c/bjMM8JuJ_o.jpg

We also moved into a new house with ample garage space:
https://images2.imgbox.com/fd/fd/qAD7ygiO_o.jpg

Attended a track day at the Nashville Super Speedway for old times sake. The track was unused for a year or two and was super dirty. My front bumper took a rock blasting. A bunch of Corvettes and Porsches left with similar damage and were not happy
https://images2.imgbox.com/44/b9/MXalIIDD_o.jpg

2017
Started off the year with big plans. I was going to switch over to ITBs and design my own intake manifold to work with Toyota AE101 throttle bodies I've had on the shelf for years.
https://images2.imgbox.com/81/c9/x2lc8dIq_o.jpg

Then we found out we were going to have our first child!
https://images2.imgbox.com/e8/67/qC99l1NU_o.jpeg

So that changed my plans for the year. I was only able to attend one Chump Car race. This year we took advantage of the engine swap and ECU rules and put in a refreshed BP4W running on a Microsquirt. They also updated the rules to allow more aero, so we went with a plastic air dam. I also through a new coat of paint on the car after replacing panels damaged by the Drive network E30 @ Barber in 2016. Made a knock-down paint booth in my garage. We competed at NCM in June with a newly installed surge tank. After burning up a pump on Day 1 going flatout, I had to drive Day 2 conserving fuel so the tank would stay fuel. We still finished in the top 10 and qualified for the Eastern Chumpionship:

The only other event I was planning to attend with Grid Life South. My only major change to the car was to swap in a 6 speed and 3.9 final drive (was a 5 speed and 4.3). While I was at it I swapped in a FM 10.3lb flywheel (aluminum one is going on a SuperMiata S2 I'm collecting parts for) and switched out the PITA BEGi spacer for a Hawley. I did find that the Hawley put the temp sender very close to the heater hose.

Tired of high intake temperatures and hot foot. I decided it was time for an air box/heat shield and some floor insulation:

Murphy's Law found its way into the garage. My freshly build 6 speed with a mix of parts was a failure. Apparently you can't mix parts from the MSM with standard parts. 5 days before Grid Life I had to pull swap transmissions. Come to find out my spare tranmission didn't have a working reverse. Went to the event anyway and just couldn't back the car up.
https://images2.imgbox.com/89/ac/R1ZUxQ4I_o.jpg
https://images2.imgbox.com/33/66/kFAfTiAZ_o.jpg

Grid Life South was a lot of fun. I turned a 1:46.2XX in traffic. There is a low 1:45. or high 1:44 in the setup, but I kept getting parked in the corners by slow Mustangs who would just motor me on the straights. I mounted up some 245 Maxxis VR-1's on my 9" wheels. Looking at some of the data, the 245's weren't gaining me enough time in the corners to overcome the loss in accel down the straights. I'll go back to 225's next year:

Had to ask my 7 month pregnant wife to help me back the car off the trailer.

Finally on 10/31 our first child, Shelby was born. Dog for scale:

Thanks. Every so often I think about selling is and moving on to another project, but I don't think I could do it. Too much time and experiences wrapped up into it.

I ran in Time Attack - Street Modified. For some reason I couldn't run HDPE+ (motor swap maybe?) I spent most of my weekend in Group D. I was pretty much the back of the field of Time Attack cars (71 of 92). Correction my time was a 1:46.4XX I did have a few great sessions with the FRS/BRZ group out there. I plan on going back next year, but just running the HDPE group. TA was too frustrating when you have low power on a straight intensive track. When your highlight of the weekend is passing a Mustang going into turn 1, I think rather be W2W racing.

skylinecalvin 12-06-2017 03:27 PM

Regarding your 2nd gear, is it possible the last owner unbolted the wrong bolt when trying to change the transmission fluid? I know that unbolting the passanger side bolt on the 6 speed will result in no reverse.

Midtenn 12-06-2017 04:19 PM

That is my assumption as well. That transmission is out of the car and getting an inspection and refresh in a few weeks anyways.

I really should update this more often. So upon tear down of the reverse-less 6 speed, we found that one of the bushings on the 5-R shift fork had almost completely slid out of the fork. In doing so, it was blocking the fork from actually engaging the reverse gear. We also found that between the NB1 and NB2 six speeds, they has moved the shifter select detentes. On the NB1's they were down in the lower shift rods (in the case, near the gears). On the NB2, they are on the shift select rod in the tail shaft housing. That explains why the NB2 transmissions have a better shifter feel. So we went nuts and put both sets in my transmission. With both sets of detentes and a MR shifter, it's super tight now.

My wife bought my some Revlimiter goodies for Christmas. I still have a HVAC panel I am installing this weekend.

Then in May I ended being the last car in a 3 car accident. It pushed in the bumper hard enough to buckle the rear body panel and shove trunk lid up an 1/8".

After a bunch of back and forth with the body shop and multiple estimates, they agreed to fix it. The body shop straightened the rear body panel, patched up the finish panel, and got a new bumper skin and core from Mazda. Sadly, on the day it was finished, my father passed away after a 10 month battle with cancer. He is the one who first taught me to work on my own cars. In a way he's responsible for this build thread. On the day of his funeral, I took sometime to clear my head and went for a "get lost drive" to find some new back roads. Stopped a park for a think and took a few shots. Laughed like crazy when not 30mins after I took these pictures I got caught in a huge downpour.

Current projects. Getting the car ready for its first track day of the year, Miatas Before The Gap @ AMP and Miatas at The Gap

I finished up my AN fuel lines from my Grid Life prep last year. The return line is a little dumb, but until I can find a better place for the AFPR, it works. The tube adapters are nice, but now I'm kind of rethinking adding additional leak points.

Tired of killing main relays, I went with the DW relay kit and power the pump directly off the battery. I'm also making a bracket for the ECU since the hook & loop is failing and fixing some wiring. The vampire clips are from my days when I didn't know any better and thought they were a good idea (10+ years ago). Now I'm only slightly smart and use butt splices and heat shrink.

Sorry about your dad. Beautiful car.

What's the reasoning for going to a switched source for 86 instead of running it to the battery with 30?

curly 07-21-2018 10:55 AM

Some people don't like that trick? Or at least don't know about it. I was iffy about it too until I saw BMW does this for their main relays. Sold!

Congrats on the kid, condolences on the dad.

On the topic of tires, my endurance team is even considering the 195 RS4s, we're already the fastest in the corners, straight line speed is where we need to improve, hence our 195 consideration, which for the RS4 is pretty much a 205.

No reasoning really. Just setting it up similar to what Mazda did. In theory you could run straight battery to the one side of the OE relay, I just didn't want to rewire the junction box under dash.

From talking without our electrical engineers, it could depend on if the relay has a protection built in. In the case of the Miata, the OE main relay has a diode in it and the fuel pump has a resistor. This is likely to protect the system from sudden voltage changes within the range of the fuel (like turning the pump on and off)

We ran the 245 VR1's for a race but found our acceleration at higher speeds suffered and we didn't gain much in cornering speeds. The lap times were a little faster, but in a race environment, we were loosing ground at the end of the straights and couldn't put the car in position to make passes on competitive cars with our improved corner speeds. After that, we switched to 225 RS3's on 9's and found a good balance. However, we are looking at moving to 225's on 8's to reduce the rotating mass further. We have talked about testing a set of 205's on our 8's to see if there is an improvement there too.

VDO Vision series gauges and AEM UEGO moved to the glove box. Also installed a 12v USB adapter in the center console to charge my GoPro on the go.

Four years after building the motor and driving around on my amateur tune, I decided to let a professional really dial everything in. I'm pretty happy with the results.

Current state of motor: NB2 block, 11:1 Supertech pistons (+1mm), Manley rods, East Street Miata Spec Miata head (pre-short radius machining rule), stock cams and springs, SuperMiata crank damper, Garage Star aluminum pulleys, Skunk2 TB, flattop intake (ported to match S2 TB and some casting clean up, custom 2.5" intake, Racing Beat header, 2.25" test pipe and Magnaflow exhaust, Flyin Miata 10.3lb flywheel, and SuperMiata organic sport clutch

Dyno plot (Dyno Dynamics):

I'm really leaning on dropping this motor into my race car project that is on going and running GLTC and ST5. If so, I'll likely add a Boundary oil pump and valve springs for extra protection. With a 170whp goal (as measured on a Dynojet), I won't really have to touch much on this motor to be right in the sweet spot.

My hood struts left me with a squeaking hood at idle for years. They didn't travel over-center so they were always pushing the hood up slighlty causing the latch to rub the loop and squeak from the vibrator BP right under it. Well squeak no more. Aero Catches were installed. Only took me 4 weeks between dad responsibilities and a Champ Car race. The underside was "Death by 1000 Cuts" due to my previous work for the over the radiator intercooler pipes:

I've been following GLTC races to plan my build. Well the speeds have gone up enough that a NA BP is no longer a competitive option. The top Miatas are running K24 and the NA BP's are in the mid pack. I briefly looked at the K24Z3, but the DBW required to detune the motor enough for GLTC is a costly option. Soooo I picked this up:

https://images2.imgbox.com/66/51/b6l1sFNa_o.jpeg

A unused Kraken manifold and EFR downpipe. The plan is to slap this and a EFR6258 onto a stock BP4W in my garage and run a boost curve for good mid range and taper the boost to reduce the power. Probably run a few choke points to keep it around 180-190whp with a ~225whp map for fun events.

Gonna stay with AEM ECU?

Yes. It maybe be old, but its got a lot of goodies built in. It's got boost by throttle which will likely be utilized. GLTC so no boost by gear/speed specifically in the rules.

Long time no update. A quick update. Sold the hi-compression bottom end to a forum member. Went over the BP4W to determine its health and all is well. Dropped everything and started working on intercooler mounting, piping, and ducting. I deleted a bunch of pictures off my phone before I uploaded them anywhere but Instagram. I'm too lazy to copy them from there so here is a basic run down.

Intercooler is a Vibrant core (same as Fab9 Stage 1) and Lars dropped off the modified Kraken downpipe that mates up to one of his great looking 3" exhausts. I mounted the intercooler even with the core support to possibly give the radiator a chance at getting fresh air. The Racing Beat bumper has a huge opening, so I'll likely make some block offs to choke it down some. A pink special @matrussell122 / @Scaxx front bumper bar really make the ducting much easier to make. I also made a separate intercooler duct to reduce the amount of air bypassing it and allowing cleaner air over the top.

I got the car running on the stock injectors. However I still had a lot of ducting to work on so I left the radiator empty. Had to use the bumper bar to pull the car up on the trailer with my winch.

Because I don't has a lot of fabrication tools, I have to take my car over to a friend who had a welder to make my intercooler piping.

Orginally I had planned to move the oil cooler out of the heat exchanger stack to the radiator core support (as seen in earlier pictures). It was going to get a seperate duct from the bumper to feed it and vent through the hood. This was going to be my "street" car setup. However after some deliberation, I decided to go full track car. Mostly because if I needed to go to a bigger oil cooler, there was no room for a bigger cooler on the core support. So the headlight assemblies are coming out. On the passenger side will be the Setrab 13 row oil cooler. I made a duct for the cooler and it will be fed by a home made turn signal intake. The inlet and duct will be sealed as to hopefully not effect the underhood pressure. If its not efficient enough, I'll look at venting the headlight lid or venting and ducting the headlight lid.

I'm interested to see where you go with this.

You had messaged me on IG about it, and I'm still happy to help if you need something made. Either way, I'm here to follow the progress!
