End of 2017

Time for an update, After the NASA Eastern States Championship we decided to give the car a break for the rest of the year. The event overall went well, I put 6 heat cycles on 1 set of R7s and 2 on my second set, used 45 gallons of VP MS109 and thankfully none of the backup parts we brought (nearly an entire car). I ended up running PTC/TTD in a fully prepped PTD car because I had to seal the ECU per Greg for time trials. I also decided not to try removing ballast to then put it back immediately after, it was just becoming a pain.

At the end of the weekend, I ended up with 3 wins in PTC earning the ESC win. In time trials, I only ended up running 3 sessions and placing 3rd. I chalked this up as a good first attempt at the national champion.

The 2018 Plan

One of the major reason we put everything on hold for the rest of the 2017 season was to wait for the ST5 rules. Now that those rule are out, we found out my R7s are useless I figure out how to tune more power, Spoilers are still allowed, and a 4" splitter is worth the weight! so now we have a plan
  • Either a Singular Motorsports or Swan Neck APR GT250
  • CCP Fab fiberglass doors
  • CCP trunk skin
  • Strip as much weight as possible from the car (package tray, maybe truck floor)
  • Build a Splitter
  • Either buy 8" wheels for the 205 R7s or run 225 RC-1
  • E85!
  • Fix broken header from ESC
  • Rebuild Brakes
  • Reroute
  • Swap radiator
  • Wash and vacuum the car
  • Re-decal car

December 2017 - January 2018

Header

After tearing down the car, we decided at minimum before the race in February is to weld the header, rebuild the calipers, change the oil, and at least clean the car!

The header cracked in race 2 at the ESC when I went two off in turn 5 at Sebring. I heard my exhaust get extremely loud and I radioed to my dad asking when I come around to check to make sure the exhaust was still on.

Brakes

Then we bought new SS brake line from 949Racing for peace of mind and rebuild kits from Mazda for the calipers.

Cooling System

Then we focused on the cooling system. for nearly a year I have had a SuperMiata radiator as a backup to the Koyo 53MM I had in the car. Basically my backup was nicer then the one in the car. We also put the QMAX reroute on the car. We didn't pull the head off to change the head gasket, just put it on until we build an ST4 motor.

You may be wondering what is holding that radiator hose onto the reroute. These are Gates Powergrip clamps. they are amazing and keep clamping as the heat up. You can get them from any auto parts store or Amazon. We like them a lot but you need the tool to remove it without destroying the hose. The we wrapped the hose with a heat barrier. Probably overkill but the cooler the fuel and air is into the engine the more power.

SuperMiata

Recently we found out SuperMiata is moving east, so we are going to build the car to run ST5 and S2. So some Changes that need to be changed
  • Make a spare diff to change from 4.77 OSG to 4.30 torsen
  • Figure out a way to quickly change out fiberglass doors back to OEM (thinking drag racing door hinges)
  • E85 and build a detune
  • either gut the OEM trunk or get another CCP trunk skin
  • get a second portable fire extinguisher
  • continue gutting car, get the ESR ballast kit to meet 2300 lb. rule
We are happy its moving to the east coast because we were really contemplating shipping the car west to run. The only downside for the 2018 season is the closest race is NOLA and its 15hrs aways from me. We are hoping with a big showing from SE guys we can run more SE tracks in 2019.

Tentative Race Schedule
  • 2/10-2/11 Palm Beach International
  • 3/3-3/4 Homestead
  • 4/21-4/22 Sebring
  • 6/23-6/24 Sebring
  • 7/28-7/29 Barber Motorsports Park
  • 9/28-9/30 NOLA
  • 10/20-10/21 Sebring
  • 12/15-12/16 Sebring
We would rather race with SuperMiata then at COTA for the NASA 2018 Championship.

Great to see that you'll be doing SPM as well! I hope they put more SE tracks on the schedule for 2019 and add events with their HPDE partner, Tracks Unlimited. I think running before/after the enduros will be a tough sell to most. I'll be making the NOLA event for SPM in my PTE car as well, it's a ~9hr tow for me. Mid-O is 3 hours closer actually, but they said numbers at NOLA will help numbers on other SE tracks, so that's where I'm headed!

What event/org is at Barber on 8/28-8/29?
