Anybody got a lead on ACLs?

5M8353H-STD

aidandj 04-21-2022 03:10 PM

Apparently they are unobtanium. Got a set on backorder.

Anyone need some HX bearings?

aidandj 04-21-2022 03:18 PM

Reusing rod bolts, yay or neigh?

boileralum 04-21-2022 04:10 PM

Nay, proper installation involves measuring bolt stretch in many cases. Not worth saving $80 or whatever they are.

aidandj 04-21-2022 04:31 PM

But bolt stretch != bolt yield

aidandj 04-21-2022 04:34 PM

From Ian

Technically, in order to reuse rodbolts you need to have the measurements from before they were torqued, so that you can re-measure them and determine if they've stretched beyond their elastic limit. I think machine shops will usually give you the measurements when they assemble a motor for you (dunno, I've done it myself the two times I've build bottom ends), so you might ask the PO if he's got a set of measurements.

If not, then you're taking a risk by reusing them. I think rodbolt failures are usually due to tensile loading rather than compressive loading, and detonation is more about compression, so that would argue that as long as they were torqued properly (ideally with a rodboltstretch gauge, not a torque wrench) they should be fine.
I used his rod bolt stretch gauge last time (Can i borrow that@codrus ?)

I swear i wrote down the numbers...

Maybe it's on your GIT

The stretch gauge I have is relative (it uses a dial indicator), not absolute, so you can't use it to check for plastic deformation of the bolt during service. You need a micrometer for that.

I'll have to see if I can find the stretch gauge -- it should be in my toolbox, but I loaned it to someone else a year or so ago and I don't remember if I ever got it back. I'm currently at Thunderhill, email/IM/whatever me next week to remind me to check when I get home?

??? I though Braineack was the git?

I wouldn’t personally run the race bearings. I run OE rods and Mahle mains. proven over many years by John Mann, and by my own oil analysis. that being said, I may have a set of STD ACL race bearings from John Mann’s spares, now owned by Martin, I can check when I get home.

curly 04-22-2022 03:09 PM

Oh sorry, saw your FS thread. You made it sound like you needed some

Scaxx 04-22-2022 03:17 PM

I think he needs the standards, but he had a set of HX on the shelf

aidandj 04-22-2022 04:29 PM

Yeah, what he said.

Let me know if you have the STD main bearings around.

curly 04-23-2022 09:46 AM

Yes, I have a set of 5M8353H-STD. Let me chat with Martin, see how much he wants for them.

Thanks. Let me check with Ed and see if I can cancel the backorder.

Lars had a set laying around. Thanks though.
