I don’t suppose that new used engine came with a start up warranty?

Scaxx Oct 1, 2018 12:58 AM

Technically 30 days, I'm on 13 today. I asked what the fine print was, does it have to be installed by a certified...etc. He said that there wasn't any fine print, that I'd just need to return it. So best case scenario, I'm out the money to ship it. Worst case, they don't honor the warranty. I'd put money on the second scenario though, I've heard importers can be very resistant to actually following through with the warranty.

You're having crappy luck with these 1.8s 3rf time is a charm I guess

So if we can find another Laguna Seca track day in the next 2 weeks you can drop it off there? :)

You mean a trackday in the car that killed a rocker arm bearing and is sitting now?

Duuuuude, tell me about it. Pretty much at the point where unless I see videos of it running, I ain't buying it. First the Ls3, then two 1.8s. I have really bad luck with receiving engines that are DOA.

18psi Oct 1, 2018 11:04 AM

actually, from what I've experienced they usually don't care and do honor it. a few locals have had to return/exchange like 3-4 times before getting an engine that works, cause these places are totally clueless and just keep flipping parts/engines, they never actually take the time or the care to check or test anything. most the time they don't even really know what engine they have. just sorta wing it.

on another note, I thought you were getting an engine from that one other guy? not the import place

Scaxx Oct 1, 2018 11:10 AM

I couldn't get a hold of him and I really wanted the 6 speed lol

But that's good to hear, the guy seemed reasonable at least, I'm just preparing for the worst. I'd really like to work something out to keep the 6 speed, but I don't know if they'll go for it or not.

matrussell122 Oct 1, 2018 11:12 AM

Lets just k-swap it. I know of a company in Lakemoor, IL that seems to have a good setup.

On a more serious note what if we just rebuilt it. I bet we could do it for 1000-1500 and then you know the motor would be fresh

matrussell122 Oct 1, 2018 11:14 AM

https://www.flyinmiata.com/fm-engine...kit-94-97.html

then some rings and machine work.

Scaxx Oct 1, 2018 11:27 AM

It's an idea, the original reason I've been buying dropouts is cause Brad is supposed to be my daily and I wanted to get him on the road ASAP. Machine shops seem to work on a different timeline than the rest of the world so I didn't want to deal with waiting on an engine to get back. I also tend to fall into the "while I'm there" trap which can be dangerous for the pocketbook lol

I might think about it at this point though because I pretty much have to go buy a new daily this week. That'll give me more time to either find an engine I 100% know runs or rebuild the bp4w in the shop. I've also always wanted to rebuild an engine (less so after watching Aidan's fun lol) so I'll think about it.

18psi Oct 1, 2018 11:29 AM

if you KISS, you can refresh a bp (adding rods, which is mandatory) for pretty cheap, simple, and quick. just sayin

but if you go that route, you need to 100% without a doubt figure out exactly what's broken on this engine

matrussell122 Oct 1, 2018 11:40 AM

Mike at Auburn Auto Machine is awesome. He fully machined my block and balanced everything in roughly a week. It took longer for me to pick it up than it did for him to do the work. They are right by where you work. (they are next door to laser fabrication if you know them)

That's true, I'm hoping the crank isn't too scored on the bp4w. Once things settle down and I have something to daily again I'll probably drop the oil pan and see how bad/good things look

Damn, that's quick. My LS took 6 months when they told me 6 weeks haha

Scaxx Oct 1, 2018 11:42 AM

Lol, really close. It's 5 minutes from where I'm sitting right now

matrussell122 Oct 1, 2018 11:46 AM

I have a spare crank than needs a grind or treasure coast has them for 150ish if i recall

Maybe you will find this in the motor.

18psi Oct 1, 2018 01:33 PM

nah, I'm thinking quarters. it is higher compression after all

Scaxx Oct 1, 2018 03:08 PM

Oh my hahahahaha
