decidedly indecisive 2004 build
Current configuration is a mp62 hotside with over the rad fmic. I am running a rev built ms3 basic with rx8 yellows. Suspension is fatcat bilsteins and a hollow front rb sway.
I want to sell the hotside (at a later date) and build a turbo setup. Original plans were to buy an fm2 no electronics kit. That idea changed into just getting the hotside parts and a fab9 intercooler. Either do diy intercooler pipes or try and mod the fm pipes. FM pipes being more expensive but using less clamps = less failure points. Now I am thinking artech mani, 3" downpipe and his 3" exhaust using a 5x11x22 magnaflow. I would still use either the fm2 intercooler kit or a fab9 with fm2 pipes or diy. ATP makes a v band turbine housing for the gt2560r. I am looking at their v band turbine inlet and standard 5 bolt turbine exhaust. That way I can keep costs down (IWG) and reliability up. I am not building a track rat, just want a fun, reliable street machine at ~220-230rwhp. |

Current configuration. Do most vendors sell only the gt2560r with the compressor housings that require adaptors? Not the end of the world as i will probably use the ones Vlad used in his build. They made by kinugawa and have reuseable o-rings. |

Made this on my swag offroad press brake. Not very pretty but allows me to mount my ms3 basic. Looks similar to the one sold at goodwin but diy style. Much better than the previous mount. Helper cat approved. |

Some progress. Ordered some parts while i wait for Abe. |
Turbo oil feed from a sandwich adapter before the filter.....is this the preferred method now? I have a larger pressure aftermarket sender on the block feed. I am concerned the added weight could cause a failure at the T.

Harley (kiki or retard) playing in the vibrant box. This was entry #2 and not as far in. First round, he went in ALLTHEWAY. |

Fab 9 intercooler installed.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1426985520 What do you guys do with this gap created from removing the inner black plastic piece? Thought about trimming it but i dont think much will be left. I cant leave the undertray unsecured in the middle? https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1426985520 |
I trimmed mine and kept it. Vertical pieces still in place. Different FMIC, though.
|
I am going to see what it looks like with bumper cover back on and decide from there. Back to stockish to get through the sniffer test.
|
I am getting close to ordering a 2560r. ATP lists two different compressor housings. The first being a standard gt28r housing and the second being the compact gt25r housing. Which is the preferred? They don't picture them and google fails. I called and they said the picture of the polished housing is wrong and it is a generic photo.
|
Emissions completed and I am back to running the ms3 basic in na mode. I have the factory IAT wired in and am getting some artificially high readings. This was after selecting the mazda sensor in the tools drop down menu. It was reading 84f and the car had been sitting for 24 hrs in my garage. Coolant was 62f and more in line with the current temps here.
|
Sorry this build is going so slow. I have been working on my top fuel dragster. (doesn't everyone have one?)

better to just wire in the gm and stick it into the airbox for now though |
I ordered the standard housing already. I didnt know if there was a significant difference between the two and I wanted to be sure the fm pipes work with it. I just received both bolt on flanges, so no big deal there.
I have both sensor plugs wired to make the emissions swap easier. I'll try the rx7 setting first and if that doesnt work, then i'll figure out something for the gm sensor.

I MUCH prefer the compact housing. It's smaller, and has a tube for an inlet instead of the bolt on flange. the compact is the same one they have on the gt2554r. the other one is the standard with bolt in flanges for both inlet and out
I believe the correct one is the rx7 drop down, I'll have to check better to just wire in the gm and stick it into the airbox for now though |

Lots of progress this week. Decided to scrap the turbo and go with a cordless leaf blower. This model flows at least 3 to 5 cfm and should yield good upper rpm power. Spool is instant (well, instant when i pull the trigger). I wired in a pcpro to keep the intake temps under control. So excite!!! |

Trubo arrival. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429126884 I was not aware that fm used a special bpv. Order 20mm ts and end result. Can i make this work? Or is the answer, get correct bpv? |
I ported the wastegate today. Nothing like taking a dremel to a brand new part. Still a couple weeks away from Artech goodies arriving.
|
I'm disappointed there is no before and after dyno charts for that blower :nono: :)
|
Sorry, I never dynoed it with the blower. Does a butt dyno count? Cause my butt is a finely tuned err....wait what?
|
Is 13.5 afr a good n/a wot target? Car runs good with ms3 in n/a mode. It starts on the first crank now. Happy as shit.
|
Artech side mount arrived yesterday. I would post some pictures but photobucket is trippin.
Keep in mind this is on an nb2, the compressor outlet in the 7:00 position terminates at the lower coolant hose. I bought fm pipes for this setup, knowing the turbo is in the same general area, just a bit higher. Do i need to replace the lower coolant hose or clock in a different position? |
Yep get the lower fm hose. Also you can get the bigger fitting for the turbosmart. in fact, I might have one laying around. what size you need?
|
I thought the fm hose was a fix for the na's?
In my searches last night, corky suggested a 21 inch long flexible napa hose for someone in my same situation. I bought the correct turbosmart and am trying to sell the incorrect one. But it would still be helpful to either have or know where to get the adapters. The wrong one has 20mm inlet and outlet. The correct one is 34mm in and 20 out.

the fm hose is a "fix" for all that use the traditional routing.
I'd gladly pay the 20 extra for a properly shaped silicone hose then some ugly accordion looking hose. or you can spend a few hours digging through the local part store hoses and find one that's properly shaped I guess. it's not a complicated shape |
I bought my replacement TS BOV fittings from Fab9. Call him, he can find what you are looking for but don't trust the part numbers on Turbosmart's website.
|
Okie. Will look into the hose and the fittings. Thanks.
Next problem is the fm IC pipes mating to a fab9 IC. I remember reading somewhere that these pipes will work with the fab9 with a little modification. I cant seem to find what the modification is. Passenger side contacts the sway bar enough to distort the pipe. Drivers side might not be an issue once i get the lower hose sorted, but it is contacting the sway bar mount and distorting. |

Touching one of the heater core pipes. I am guessing a slight bend in the hard line will fix this? https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1433977074 Just to show where the compressor outlet is in relation to the lower rad pipe. I understand the fm rad pipe follows the oem general shape. Not sure it will gain me any room? |

Thoughts on this configuration? Not sure i want the additional length of pipe. Next move is to remove the lower rad pipe and see what room is left. If i can get the fm pipe to attach, then i will find a new route for the lower rad pipe. |

Interesting that the fm hot side pipe can be oriented to fit through the hole behind the headlight. Its all wrong on the top side, so would have to be cut. I cant use the fm pipe how it is designed. It makes hard contact with ac lines etc. I think i am going with that hole and the compressor clocked to 3 o'clock. The biggest challenge is routing around the fm elbow with maf attached. It pushes the filter into the same area the pipes would be. I can trim but i am not sure enough room would be created. I only need the maf installed long enough to get through emissions. Does the strut tower bar do anything on the nb2's? I would have to eliminate it. |

Made some bead tools. Probably didnt need to make a 2" and a 2.5" but whatevs. Exhaust is on and just waiting on usps to deliver pipes and couplers. |

Mock up of the behind the headlight routing. Starting at the turbo i used a 45° coupler, 45° pipe, 45° coupler, 12" straight pipe, straight coupler, 90° pipe and then a 2" to 2.5" coupler at the fab9 IC. With some tweaking, i will have just enough room for the air filter. |
It's alive!!!!! Did a quick run up and down the street yesterday to get it nice and hot. No leaks!!
Did some tuning today. I have the wastegate tied open right now until the replacement actuator arrives. Boost gauge indicates some creep but will log to confirm how much. Running test pipe until the cat pipe arrives. It is a little loud, so i am hoping the cat and correct wastegate position will quiet it down a touch. I like the sound, just wish it was a little bit more quiet cause not race car. Next step will be to install cat and run it at wastegate pressure (6-7psi). |
I am getting ~9psi with my 6-7psi wastegate actuator. I tied the wastegate open and at 7k, i am seeing 4.8psi. This is with 3" exhaust and test pipe. I havent run the cat pipe yet.
I played around with fan on/off set points. The a/c fan stays on longer than the main, and i cant seem to find what area in TS changes this setting. I figured out the on temp but no off temp. Any help here would be appreciated. |

Any suggestion for my vvt map? This is the map that rev sent for mp62. He said run the same thing for my turbo.
