Dieselmiata's car is not a diesel or a Miata. Discuss.

I lied. It is a Miata. It's red. And slow (but we're gonna fix that).
This is my Miata. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367432582 This is Diesel. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367432582 This is Diesel on a Miata. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367432582 I flew down to Texas to pick this thing up and drive it back to the Chicago area. This one won't see salty roads like my 95. Got a good deal, 3K for the car with hardtop and new paint. It was "Texas Red" read:sunfaded to pink. Looks good when clean. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367432582 Started tearing into it a bit. Not too bad looking. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367432582 Cam seals were leaking something fierce. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367432582 The wires were dryrotted and cracking so I tore the old stuff off and retaped them. I also powdercoated the brackets in an attempt to "hide" them and make the engine bay look a little less cluttered. The pictures don't reflect how well it blends in. I'm pretty happy with it so far. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367432582 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367432582 |

The plan for now is to strip it down pretty far, clean, paint, powdercoat, and polish everything possible. I want this one to look like it just rolled off the showroom floor by the summer. I just got done polishing the throttle body and dashpot. Dremels are awesome.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 I took the valve cover off for the first time. Pretty varnishy (that's a word now) inside. I'm sure I can fix that though. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 Powdercoating is fun! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 For my next trick, brushed aluminum! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 I think I'm getting a little carried away with polishing stuff. These are my water pump pulley and alternator pulley. Well, half of it anyway. I'll get to the other half later. The water pump pulley only took about half an hour. I cheated and bolted it to my bench grinder and just held different grades of sandpaper to it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433038 |

I took a break from polishing and broke out the trusty old pickle fork. Disconnected the suspension inner workings and am starting the cleanup process. EVERY PART ON THIS CAR is coated in a nice 1/4" layer of Texas dust. But I'll take dust over rust any day. It's gonna look great after I clean and paint everything. I also put the injectors and fuel rail back on. It stands out a little more than I hoped. but we'll see after I get everything else put back together. On another note, during my reassembly of the crank boss, I found that my clutch is weak and in need of replacement. Time to drop the tranny...
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 Hard to see in the crappy pic (i'm not an artist) but my beltline moldings were in really crappy shape, so I pulled them off, used a razor blade to scrape all the old rubber off, and plasti-dipped them. Turned out better than I had expected. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 My control arms are in pretty bad shape. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 So I pulled out my weapons of mass de-rust-ion https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 Prepped for paint https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 Same process for the calipers. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 And I fixed that dust problem with new undercoating. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 Because everybody likes clean nuts! :riaa: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367433837 |

Got the timing belt done, and the engine is almost all buttoned up. While I was in there, I pulled all my lifters apart, got the nasty black oil from out of them. Next I'm going to remove the power steering pump and see if I can polish the pulley. I'm really liking the water pump pulley, but if the others don't match it's going to drive me insane.https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367434363
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367434363 I just dropped my power steering pump and rack. Holy crap what a mess. The boots are all but gone, the top seal is leaking, and it's all covered in a 1/4" thick layer of grease and dirt. I've go some real work to put into this. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367434363 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367434363 Cleaned up the steering rack, and figured out a way to match the power steering pump to the rest of the engine. The pulley still needs some polishing, but the brunt of the work is done. I painted the pump body with the same black as the rest of the chassis to help it blend in a bit. I have no ^&%$#in g idea how I'm going to polish the A/C pulley without removing the compressor. Maybe once I get everything up and running, I'll just use the natural rotation of the engine and hold sandpaper to the pulley as it rotates https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367434363 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367434363 Had to take a break from car work to rebuild the head and put a bigger motor on my air compressor. But now I'm back in action, and now have more motivation to restore parts! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367434363 |

They look good. All I need now is a battery and a new rear caliper and she'll be ready to rock and roll! A few glamour shots of her current state. I reinstalled the power steering system, soldered in some new wires to replace the old hardened stuff, and finished bolting down all of the wiring harnesses. Attachment 185513 Attachment 185514 Attachment 185515 And all of this is would be much easier without some damned wildcat smacking all the nuts and bolts onto the ground. http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...d/IMAG0476.jpg Painted my new mudguards, not a bad job if I say so myself.. Attachment 185516 Color match is GO! Attachment 185517 Here's how it went down. I finished putting everything together (engine wise) today, and with my trusty Haynes manual in hand, I went to fire her up. All I got was wub-wub-wub-WUB-wub-WUB-wub. Yeah, It sucked. So After double checking everything, connections, air, fuel spark systems, I tried again. More of the same. Maybe bad gas I thought. It's been sitting since October, off to the gas station to get a couple of gallons. Put em in, tried to start, same story. So my wife hears the noise and comes out to see how things are going. I told her what was going on, I told her and she asked if I was sure I had the spark plug wires on right. Initial reaction(in my head) WOMAN, HOW DARE YOU QUESTION MY AUTOMOTIVE SKILLS?! I checked the Haynes manual and I had the wires right for what was listed from 1992 and later. I had the wires exactly as listed, but decided to change the order to the 1990-1991 order. Dammit. Pwn3d by the wife. So she's running. Good. But at the end of the video you'll see smoke rising from the exhaust header. Who's got two thumbs and forgot to tighten the O2 sensor? This guy! Tightened it down, let her warm up, and after about 20 minutes the ticking went away. I expected it would take longer because i took all the lifters apart to clean them. I started noticing a strange metallic ringing, and traced it to the exhaust tip. The baffles in the muffler seem to have broken and making a god awful ringing sound. Got a new muffler on standby though, so no worries. So that's a project for another day. A little later on I started to hear a strange popping noise from the engine bay, sort of like bubbles popping. Looked around, nothing obvious. And then I noticed my radiator overflow tank level rising. The damned fan failed on me and it started to overheat. I got her shut down before the needle climbed to the danger zone. It was cold out and I threw a box fan on the engine to cool her down. No damage done, compression is still good across the board. anyway, enough rambling. Here's a quick video of her idling. *WARNING! There are some people who have no business taking pictures or videos. I am one of them. One day I'll have someone else take decent pics/videos to put up. Installed the Mudguards, I had no idea how drastically they changed the profile of the rear end! The paint came out a perfect match too. Oh yeah, and i got my plates. I can drive her now! (once i source a rear caliper.) Attachment 185518 Attachment 185519 |
Impressive cleaning and "restoration". Are you sticking with the 1.6?

Holy crap what a day. She's on the ground now, all suspension pieces on and torqued down. What a bitch that was! The tie rod ends were a monster to get back in and torqued down. Still needs an alignment, but that will come soon. Put the sway bars back on, after a thorough cleaning. Put all the pads in the calipers and set the parking brake adjustment all that is left now is to bleed them. I'll wait till tomorrow to do that. Rebuilt the shifter and bolted it all together. I bought a new HVAC panel from BTDT and swapped the old dingy panel out. It looks 100 times better now. Radio is in, and the tombstone is in place, the plastidip job on it looks better than I'd hoped. Put the instrument cluster and steering wheel back together.

I pulled the top off today, it was old, cracked, and mildewed. In case you haven't noticed, i'm a little bit of a clean freak, so I was NOT happy with what I found. I'll let the pictures speak.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367435748 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367435748 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367435748 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367435748 I needed a moment to take that in. The AA battery had me worried about corrosion underneath it, but it was sitting on a protective barrier of leaves and dirt. At least I found the source of the musty smell. Much better now. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367435748 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367435748 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367435748 |
Wow, looking fantastic. I doubt any car I've ever owned has been that clean.
2 nitpicks: Not digging the body-colored mudguards. Really prefer they stay black. Also, can't stand repaints that don't keep the black strip at the bottom of the doors. Mask it off and spray it with some Plastidip? |

Most of this thread up to this point has been copypasta'd from MiataForumz. There are likely breaks in the dialogue/conversation that did not make it into the thread, so I apologize for any confusion up to here. The top has been replaced with a Robbins glass window, she got new tires, and I have her running on the DIYPNP that I built for my 95, which has been sold due to lack of interest and Chicago winters.
I wanted to bring the thread here due to interest from other people, and this: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367436150 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367436150 It's a Greddy TD04H with an EDT manifold I picked up from another member. Needs to be cleaned first, but this should be fun. I'll get more pictures up in a bit. Oh, and more cat pictures. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367436150 |

I like your idea of plasti-dipping the beltline moldings. Mine look like shit too.
|
The plastidip has held up for almost a year now and counting. The hat trick was separating the old rubber stuff from the thin metal frame without bending it all to hell.

Damn man, how do you even drive your cars being that OCD? I live down a 1/2 mile dirt road, I bet that would drive you insane. :D
|
It's probably overkill, I know. I just like a clean car. It makes it easier to work on.
In other news, I pick up the keys to my new house today! More room to work! |
damn that's shiny

Super impressive! I hope to do this to my 94 someday.
Keep it up! :winner: |
It is indeed clean, I'd definitely be careful though, painting brackets only draws attention to them, like the fuel rail and power steering tensioner bracket, and they're not very attractive pieces, no matter the paint quality.
|

Absolutely. At present, the power steering brackets (among many others)are a nice shiny polished color. They are also in a cardboard box. I removed the power steering and A/C in preparation for the turbo system. I have a very bad habit of acting upon "cosmetic" mods just to see if I like the way they look. You'll notice that in the first picture the wheels are gunmetal. Then they were bronze for about a day, the gold for about a week, now they're silver again.
As she sits now. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367466857 I actually hate things that stand out. I want everything to blend in, and look like it could have very well come from the manufacturer in that condition, but every now and then I get a wild hare and decide to paint something. Luckily I have a big eraser (sand blaster). Notice the blue hose on the radiator? It makes my skin crawl everytime I see it. I've just been too busy to get a replacement. The green radiator has to go as well. |
That's brown actually, and about to blow up. A nice aluminum radiator would fit in well.
|
Keen to see what you do to clean up the turbo bits!
Nice job! |

Many of the wires under the hood were old, hardened, and brittle, so I decided to splice in new wires. In the process, I decided to go ahead and do a slight wire tuck. Nothing too drastic, just moving stuff around for ease of cleaning.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367501706 |
Great job so far.
Always nice to see a car go from dirty/ugly to nice and shiny. So I've a question I ask just about everyone: to polish or "brush" the vc and im, all you used was the dremel, drill, and those two wire wheels? Or what? Break it down for me. I want to do mine similar to that (though a little less shiny/blingy) and then clear coat em. What was your exact process? |
If you go to Harbor freight or similar places, you can find nylon wheels of varying grades. Coarse, Medium, and fine. Usually the orange ones are coarse, and the bule are fine and those are the two you will need. (you can see them in the picture I posted of my "weapons of mass de-rust-ion). Get an electric drill that you can adjust the speed on, a die grinder and most air drills are too fast for the nylon wheels and they will fall apart. Those two alone will get you the brushed aluminum look. Just follow up with a good aluminum polish and sealer and you're golden.
If you want to go even further, such as I did with the throttle body, start with a 400 grit sandpaper to reach the spots untouched by the nylon wheels. Bust out the dremel and the cloth drums that come in the usual assortment of bits. Most hardware stores will have the polishing compounds used, and they vary in grades like everything else. Start with a course grade and slowly work your way up to the finer stuff. The real hat trick though, is to be patient. It is VERY time consuming to get it done. The valve cover took about 2 hours of course brushing, and another 2 of fine. The throttle body took about 3 hours all together. I usually just start a movie, put in the headphones, and go to town. The longer you spend, the better it looks. Here is the wheel I speak of. Get the orange one too. http://www.harborfreight.com/4-inch-...ush-91372.html This is the polishing compound I use. It comes in grades 1-5. Just get them all, they're cheap and last forever. http://www.lowes.com/pd_329452-70-PC...ductId=3364032 |
purrrrfect thanks
|
Also, notice that in the picture I have the nylon wheels in a die grinder. Don't do that. They will fly apart when you over speed them. I found out the hard way, and luckily managed to avoid injury. You also get a better finish with a constant speed.
|
cool beans. I have a variable speed drill, and HF is a couple minutes away, I'll def give it a shot.
I got my current parts bead blasted already, so they're clean and purdy, but have a few imperfections here and there. this will hopefully eliminate that. I'm not going for mirror finish, but yours does look good in pictures and looks "natural" more or less. I'm not painting anything in my bay. Just cleaning and clearing/sealing. Did you take apart your tb to do it up? |

I decided to remove the A/C and PS because
1. Make room for the turbo and piping 2. Declutter the engine bay. 3. I never use the A/C anyway. 4. PS is for little girly men. I hate half-assing things, so I used brake line tubing with fittings and fabricated some real nice, bent tubes to use as the loops instead of the traditional hose and clamp method for depowering the rack. Plus I like to keep my mods easily reversible. You can see the one of the loops I made in the latest picture of the engine bay. As it turns out however, I am a little girly man. After a week of driving with the depowered rack, I hate it. I want my PS back, so I will be doing that project soon. As a side, I will soon have an awesome set of depowering lines and plus for anyone who is more of a man than I am. I'll get pictures of them up soon. And since I forgot to take pictures, here is a cat helping with the work. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367507530 |

I find it amusing that all the tough guys act hard on the internet with statements like " PS is for wussies " and " A/C is for women " then 99% of them end up re-installing ps and ac into their daily because no one in their right mind enjoys sweating their balls off on a daily basis and man handling/wrestling with the steering wheel in parking lots and on slow turns. I just acknowledged my little girly man side and never ditched either in the 1st place:party: |
100%. I live in MS and I drive in parking lots. I want A/C and PS.
Next used car I buy, I'm just going to drop off at dieselmiata's house for a week or two. I figure his OCD will kick in and I'll end up with a spotless car when I pick it up. |
I'm driving a 97 with PS right now, it's too easy.
while I do want to reduce the caster on my 91 w/o PS, I not enjoying having PS. Maybe if I was drifting... |

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367542968 Spare block, came with all the goodies (alternator, PS pump, blah blah blah) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367542968 Spare head https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367542968 And my big box o' rice! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367542968 But here's the rub. The ebay vendor I bought it from sent me the wrong kit. So I sent it back, and this time they sent me the right kit, only in 3" pipe size. I seriously doubt I'll manage to fit it in, so I think rather than dealing with the douchbag ebay vendor, i'll just try for a sell/trade for 2 or 2.5" pipe. |
hey i remember your car from mf, glad you finally decided on the turbo. also the car is super clean
|
Super clean car and impressive build. I am not too far from you and with all this rain we have been having I have yet to even wash my car yet. (It lives outside)
Good luck with build. Are you running any ems yet? |
Running on a DIYPNP MS2extra. Been running it off an on for about 2 years now. I've got the hang of it for the most part, but I still have some learning to do as far as dialing in enrichments, and creating the perfect idle. All the rain is putting a huge damper in my plans, and I'm moving to Volo at the end of the month so progress will not be as fast as i'd like it to be for a bit. But the summer is still young, I have time.
|
Hey I recognize that turbo! Good luck with it.
Nice build man, wish I had half your attention to detail. |
Thanks, man! I'll put her to good use. I'll get some pics up in a bit, she cleaned up real nice.

So after much cleaning and scrubbing, I got the housings pretty clean, but there was some staining in the cast from old oil that I couldn't get out. I wanted to throw it in my sandblaster, but due to moving into the new house this weekend I don't have my equipment set up. In the meantime, I painted it anodized ricer red. :loser:

Painted for now. I have all the equipment for powdercoating but as mentioned before, all of my equipment is packed up for moving tomorrow. I tend to do paint jobs first to see if I actually like the appearance before I commit to the powdercoating. Paint comes off easily, powdercoat not so much. I do have some pretty awesome powder colors though. From what I understand, paint holds up well on the compressor housing. Obviously is't not a "one and done" paint job; it will fail over time but it looks good for now.
Edit: Sorry, didn't answer your question. I used the Metalcast paint. I've seen/read some other builds that have used it on the compressor with pretty good success. |

Got the manifold and turbo mounted. Buffon01 sold me a perfect condition wastegate actuator to replace the HKS one I had. The stem was a little short so I had to cut, thread, and insert a rod union.
Also, making stainless oil lines sucks ass. It took everything I had just to get one side done. I'll buy the pre-made ones next time, althoug from what I gather the stainless lines don't go bad so there won't BE a next time. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370749124 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370749124 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370749124 |

Well gentlemen, She's boosted. I actually got it up and running about 3 days ago with help from Flying_solo, and she's running like a champ. I did have to adjust my BOV a little bit, but other than that it was painless. The absolute worst part by far was fabricating the stainless drain line. Tapping the pan was a breeze, but putting the fittings on the hose was the devil. I will NEVER do that again.
Learning to use Megasquirt before adding boost was the best thing ever. It made the transition seamless. I'll be upgrading to some better parts as time marches on, but for now I could not be happier. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1371785444 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1371785444 |
