Many MSM 6-speeds have issues getting into reverse and tend to be a bit vague on the track (dropping into 2nd instead of 4th is REALLY bad; do that once and you end up over-focusing on shifting the rest of the day) - the SSK fixes these issues.

I initially had the short version but switched to the tall/angled version and prefer it (Bill tried to talk me into the tall/angled version when I initially bought the short one - I should have listened but thought the tall/angled one just looked odd).

Thanks for the input, the SSK you mention, short shift kit? That's the short one of the MR kits Yea?

Well, got the engine bay painted yesterday, but not without fail. Got everything completely painted and went to roll the car back into the garage and when i was rolling over the lip into the garage I had to use the jack to lift the front so the rollers could roll over the lip, well id done this many times before without issue, this time it slipped off the jack and the radiator support landed on the jack completely mangling the support. Should be an easy fix, just frustrating.

I wasn't clear enough. By "SSK" I actually meant ANY of the MR Short Shift Kits, they're all an improvement over the stock shifter.

In terms of finding reverse, MR Tall/Angled SSK > other MR SSKs (ie. tall version is easier; some find that the short version requires more force)

Some buyers who bought the short version and then the extension for the track found that the extension can rotate and MINX from mx5cartalk.com actually snapped his.

MORALE OF THE STORY: Get the Tall/Angled SSK

Out of curiousity, what do you use for paining? Compressor, gun, paint type. I'd love to paint shit in my garage and the collapsible tent seems like a brilliant idea.

Just wanted to chime in on the MR shifter. I have a tall angled, and I absolutely love it. Hands down one of the best modifications I've done to the car. I only paid $200 for it so that may sway my opinion, but I look at it like this. Your hands are constantly using it. The shifting is extremely precise. In my experience, it is easier to find reverse with the tall angled MR shifter than even stock.

My tall angled is a straighter variation of the tall angled, and visually it looks a lot better to me than the heavily angled one.

Thank you both, I think this has helped make my mind up, I was initially a bit iffy about the tall/ angled setup, just seems big and bulky and oddly shaped, but if it truly does change the feel of everything then that seems like the best route to go. Id hate to spend that sort of coin and then have issues finding gears, that seems like the last thing id want to be worried about.

I figured this canopy tent would serve as the easiest solution for a temp paint booth in my drive way, and it did a great job. The open portion of the tent was backed up pretty close to my garage, and I had the plastic on the right mate up to the garage. All in all it worked out exactly how I would of expected it to work out. The compressor is a janky ass 30gallon craftsman compressor that flows like poop. The gun was a friend of mines that he uses for work, he isnt a professional paint/ body guy, but its an aspect of his job so he is familiar with it, I am unsure of the type of gun used.

As far as the paint, its an OEM paint code, Ford T8 like what was used on the old 427 cobra and the GT40, I got the paint from Touch Up Paint and Accessories | AutomotiveTouchup and was sure to get a solid sandable primer.

All in all, the job didn't turn out perfect. I had NEVER done bondo work before, nor did i personally have any experience what so ever with prep/ paint on something like this so there are a hand full of imperfections. But ultimately its finally all one color, and now i am only waiting on the V8R subframe before i can go ahead and drop the motor back in. Well, and to straighten out that cross support lol

That was why I initially bought the short version, the long angled one in chrome looked odd and really stood out - fixed that using black heatshrink over the shaft; with the black Voodoo knob it tends to disappear.
TIP: Heatshrink works much better than plasti-dip which gets ratty very quickly after the first nick occurs and will need regular maintenance.

Well, I sorted out my bent up radiator support, good as new!!

Very nice work at pulling that support out.

Just as an aside, I wanted to share what I meant about the MR shifter.

If you don't want a weird looking shifter, don't get this style.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6de50ad00f.jpg

Get this style here. It really isn't super bent or strange, it actually looks very near stock, and is a fantastic height and feels great. If you contact MR they can set you up with pretty much any style you want.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6423d99b12.jpg

I also thought that the stock height/no taper in a "tall" style would be pretty sweet too if you didn't want any angle and a custom design.

Is that 15° back swept in the center?

That's the style I have but looks really bad because the knob is long and chrome (with a black shaft and black Voodoo knob it doesn't look crap or like your obese mother-in-law leaned on it and bent it when she wedged herself into the passenger seat).

What's the one in the revlimiter picture

Shibby 08-24-2016 08:07 AM

Instead of the standard 30 degree angle at 9:00 (toward the steering wheel), I asked Bill to make mine with a slight (10-15 degree) angle backwards (at 6:00) and away from the console. It was something he’d never done and he very kindly agreed to give it a try. The result is in the photo above.

Parts Review ? MiataRoadster Short Shift Kit ? revlimiter.net

I love the way that looks.

I absolutely love it. Although it is not like Adam's style which actually faces away from the dash. Mine is the same angle, but faced toward the steering wheel. Next time I'm at my car I'll drop some photos in this thread.

Got the alternator bolted up, went with a reman alternator from Advance auto lol, $100 cheaper than OEM reman. Waiting on subframe and front upper control arms from V8R, HOPEFULLY will be here next week. Getting some bushings and sleeves from Sadfab, going to use the stock lower control arms for now. Shouldnt be too bad to swap out later down the road.

And what makes you say that? The racepak iq3 will be able to display that information.

hi_im_sean 09-01-2016 02:34 PM

Because sometimes they get shitty regulators and output 16+ volts and fry things and explode batteries. Not super common but it has happened.

psyber_0ptix 09-01-2016 02:37 PM

Is that remanufactured alternators in general or just cheapy/carquest supplied alternators

hi_im_sean 09-01-2016 02:38 PM

I think its remaned alternators using Chinese parts. So... allofthem I would guess? You can buy still buy quality rebuild parts from certain suppliers if you want to do it yourself.
