FRT's Build
Car: Mazda Miata
Year: 1997 Package: B Package Miles: 80,000 Color: Red Plan: I will be back from Afghanistan for two weeks this summer, so I plan to install everything when I get home. I am going for 3-4 days. If it takes longer than so be it. Goal: The Miata will be daily driven, with quite a few cross country trips in the future. I wanted ride comfort to be present, but not overwhelming. I still prefer to feel the car. As for power, I don't expect, or want, more than 200whp. I am shooting for 170-180whp. In the future I will probably go with a MS and upgrade fuel delivery and shoot for a bit more power. |
You have got your work cut out for ya. I'll be pulling for you to get it done, though. Given your personal circumstances and tight time constraints, I don't think anyone can fault you for not going DIY.

Well I just made an impulse buy last night, saw a 88 RX-7 Clutch Type LSD off an Automatic for a good deal. Had to grab it, so now I have an LSD to put on!! Since it is the Automatic version it will have the 3.909 ratio, which was the selling point for me. This is the LAST part I will buy for this summers build...

200 Shipped, which I felt was fair considering it only had 60k on it. I was going to wait and try and get one in a junk yard around me, but really didn't want to take the chance of not finding one in time.

Very nice. We have pretty much the same exact car. Red 97 with a hard top and we are both going about things pretty similarly. If you need a extra hand at all to meet your time limit let me know. I'm 45 minutes out of chicago

I may take you up on that offer. My friend (the one taking the pics) is going to be helping me out, but he has a full time job, so I will be doing a lot of it by myself. :D |
Wow... that is alot of shit to bolt on. Mine took a little over 64hrs to complete :D

I took it out for lunch when I got back Tuesday, then about 12 hours later the engine was out (had to visit with the family before I disappear into the garage for 4 days hahah).
The engine is out, I spent pretty much all today prepping the engine and engine bay for the new stuff, should be all done Friday. I haven't been able to work on it as much as I would like, but I have relatives coming and going all the time cause of the fam. reunion this weekend, so I have to mingle. Thanks to murphy ('s law), the engine hoist I borrowed from a friend did not go up all the way... the engine did not clear the front bumper... had to drop the front end so much the rotors were like 2 in off the ground to get it out. Either way, putting it in I will have a working hoist. Tons of pics to follow. I think after lunch I will do the fuel filter and degrease the engine. After that it's all turbo baby w00t. |
Water/Oil Hard lines run.
Turbo bolted on New FM EGR tube on (had to modify because of the M-Tuned coolant reroute) Clutch/Flywheel mounted Transmission back on Because of the broken hoist, and my lack of any car, I decided to try to put it back in with the broken hoist (Broken as in will not go up very far). I removed the front bumper and I am going to lower the front end until the rotors are about 1" off the ground, This should help with getting the transmission back in nicely as well. I broke 2 wires on the transmission (maybe sensor for reverse?) so I need to solder them back and then I will start putting the engine/trans back in. Unfortunately I have my family reunion to attend which is 2 hours from my house, which means what ever I get done today, will be it until Sunday night. I am thinking Sunday I can get it running and Monday I will put on the brakes/suspension/roll bar. |

Downpipe mounted Started reinstalling misc connectors. Sucks, but that will be it until Sunday :/ Although I am excited to see the Family. |

I drove a turbo miata today, and it was mine!
After a few set backs (aka missing/incomplete/wrong parts) I finally took my car out for a spin. I am having a small problem which I will post in further detail in the appropriate section. Short story is the engine will sputter and die if I press in the clutch after a hard pull and keep the clutch in. I haven't had time to check everything, so I am sure it will be an easy fix. |

I drove from Chicago to Minneapolis last weekend. We took the long way home, so round trip totaled 800+ miles. There were no issues with the car, drove like a champ.

Very nice and complete build! I wish I could pull my engine and do everything at once, but the old way of changing things bit by bit seems to work ok.
MS and injectors does sound like a good plan, I hope to see a dyno soon! |

Alright, so part of me is upset with the fact that I haven't done much DIY stuff. That was mostly because of this deployment. I will be getting back in a few months and I am planning some good stuff for this winter.
1. Frog Arm Install <purchased> 2. Frame Rail Stiffeners <purchased> 3. MegaSquirt <purchased> 4. 600cc Injectors <Sept 1st> 5. Aluminum Radiator + Slim Fans <Oct 1st> 6. Pull the engine and harness. 7. Remove the EGR. 8. Reroute/clean up the harness, remove unneccesary wires. 9. Clean the engine bay, if it's bad, get it resprayed. 10. Body Work (I want to get my hard top, A-Pillars, and front lip painted black, and get the rest resprayed red). 11. Stainless Brake Lines. <purchased> <edit>12. Can't forget my RX7 Diff! Will def. be installing that this winter. Hoping to have everything finished by Spring time. w00t! |

Thanks to some good deals in the FS section I now have 550cc RX7 Injectors and a fuel pump. Wasn't really planning on the fuel pump, but why not. Also got some TSIs which I have been debating picking some up for a while now. Really just need a Radiator and some slim fans and I should be good. debating getting a EBC though :/

Round 2
Well I am gearing up for round 2 with my car. The install list isn't as large as back in June, but there is plenty of work to do.
I also have a bit more relaxed time line, an entire month instead of one week. I am on block leave (aka vacation) for my deployment I returned from in December. It's gonna be freezing. I will employ the friend that helped me last June. The Parts: Frog Arms F+R Sub Frame Brace (949) Harness Bar G-Force Harnesses Frame Rail Stiffeners Turn Signal Intakes (Need to be repainted + lens repaired first) Kaaz 1.5way LSD Polyurethane Differential Bushings Front Lip Rear Trunk w/ R Package Lid Red Valve Cover New Shift Boot MegaSquirt RX-7 Injectors Fuel Pump Things to do: Install parts listed above. Clean up wiring under steering wheel. Actually run and secure vacuum hoses correctly. Install FM Intake Heat Shield, finish bolting down the exhaust shield. Remove stock seat belts. Install new cover for the center console storage thing. Oil Change. Trans Fluid Change. Break in differential. Fix the upside down mazda emblem.
