Our local time attack had it's final event of the season yesterday (11/17/12) and it was the first one I've been able to actually compete in all year. I've either been plagued with stupid issues that I myself caused (popped my motor with the nitrous, killed my tranny because I didn't fill it up after the new motor went in :claugh: ) or have been out of town.

So my story is that I haven't driven this thing in 6+ months, I've never driven it with the 6-speed before yesterday and I'm recovering from a fractured right foot with some goofy ligament damage and a sprained right hand.... Needless to say it was a fun day. Getting back in the driving groove, learning new shift points without the help of my tach/speedo (only functioning gauge was my Prosport water temp, which came in handy when my alternator belt flew off and I cruised into the pits at ~250* :() and trying not to hurt myself anymore than I currently am... So I spent my morning just re-acclimating myself to the car as a whole and mapping my shift points visually with track landmarks since my car is stupid loud and I didn't want to rely on engine note.

Got comfortable, morning went well (aside from the alternator belt thing...)

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406560044

I had been gone long enough to completely forget what psi I liked in the 888's so I spent my morning at ~40lbs and decided to just hang out there all day since I forgot my log book and bending down to check them after every session was kinda tedious for me.

Decent turnout for the Holiday season... All lined up for the afternoon's timed event.

My hot laps and resulting dick-headed celebratory drift-tard move. 1:22.8 first lap, 1:21.7 second. Please notice my mental preparation pep-talk before grabbing 5th on my seconds hot lap, it's HILARIOUS. I had noticed the shifter get notchy on me a few times during the morning but it was pretty sporadic so I paid it no mind. I don't know if this is all 6-speeds but mine seems to have a tiny area to the right of 5th (like you're headed for reverse) that you can "tap" if you try to shit hard from 4th to 5th, this happened to me on my first hot lap and I knew it was a throw-away once I saw my time and I did not want to trash my second one because I NEEDED 1st place so I was just repeating "It's fucking 5th gear man, just shift to 5th gear. No tricks, just shift." :blaugh:

It worked. Got into 4th a little earlier coming through the kink, stayed in it and was pumped to see my winning time. True Form walked away with it's first sweep of the season since our Class B car (STi) has been absent and I've been doing whatever I've been doing. We have another Class A Miata but he's a couple seconds slower than me on average and even when he's won, we've had no one in Class B. Feels good to finally knock that out man. :phillyb:

Excellent.

I had a blast, it was damn good to get back on track and I can't wait until next season. My plans are just to tidy this thing up some more, try to find another 100 lbs in it (and me?) and just drive it. I feel like there's another second or more in both the car and myself by just dialing it in and getting comfortable again, can't wait!!!!!!

Not a lot going on with this thing, been in-between work for a while so I've just been trying to:

1. Keep it.
2. Drive it.

Things are going a lot better so I'm able to have a little bit of fun with the Miata again.

So, some new things are that a buddy gave me his old AEM UEGO so we got that installed and I'm that much closer to geting the MS in the car, still hoping it's in the car in a month or so...

We finally mounted the wing from page 2. The mounts are crap and the end plates are terrible so it's really only on the car to be on the car. I'll probably run the next event with it but I'm sure I'll end up pulling it off until we can "finalize" it a bit better... :haiguyths:

Worked on this a little bit in preparation for the event this past Saturday night but didn't get as much done as I'd have liked. I really need to get my shit together and learn about wiring and relays and stuff so I can clean up and organize my harness and subsequently my interior.

True Form swept the time attack. I won class A, our buddy Cuz took class B in his new EVO X and Tim (Girth Brooks) took class C in his EVO IX, as usual. Driving at night sucks, I might need another set of Hellas for the next night event this year, thankfully I can swap them over to my 4Runner when I don't need them on the Miata so it's a bit easier to justfy their price.

I'll need to swap my new set of R888's on to the 6ULs, the current ones are toast, couldn't really find any grip despite trying a few tire pressure setups that had worked well for me in the past. I'm hoping to finally get teh MS in the car this week or next and start tuning a bit, past that I really, really want to start on more aero. Alumalite splitter, canards, tire spats and new wing mounts so that I can adjust more AOA. We'll see..

Ended up driving the Miata around for a couple of days since I was too lazy to go pick up the Runner.

Took it to grab some grub.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406560357

Then some groceries.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406560357

Got new wheels, Tim (Girth Brooks) ditched these TRMs for Rotas so it just worked out.

Un-plastidipping them was a pain in my ass though, especially because I waited until arter mounting my fresh 888s on them.

We're (he's) looking into dwell settings and internal wiring, hopefully it's figured out soon, I'm excited to start trying to maximize my setup.

Drove it. The MS is on a base map from a buddy of mine's 99. Runs good. Rich, but good. The cam really woke up the midrange (leaned it out thanks to the added flow.) I dig it.

FINALLY addressed the cockpit wiring a little. Pulled the ABS computer completely along with a few other odds and ends. Mounted the MS on the tunnel, got the wiring all mounted to teh dash par, things are looking up.

Small updates to come, Not racing this season so I'll be focusing on making this thing a little bit more liveable. We sold my GF's Saturn so I've given up the 4Runner I just "finished" so that her and my son are in something safer so I'll be DD'ing the Miata until I find another LS400 sometime this year. Luckily I live close to work.

Now, the cluster in the Miata hasn't worked in almost 2 years. That hasn't really bothered me with it being a "track car" but now that I'll be streeting it a little more often I'm wanted to address it. First things first, bought a sweet JDM tach.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406561006

Next order of business, I had to quiet it down... It's amazingly obnoxious, which never mattered at the track but at 7AM leaving my neighborhood for work, it does.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406561006

I went with a twin-loop hoping that it, along with the existing Magnaflow, will legitimately muffle this car. I hope it was a good call... Don't worry, it will be hidden as high up as possible, gonna try and dump it out the side of the bumper or something.

Went over to Tim's (Girth Brooks) on Sunday to attack some wiring that's been bugging me for years. Basically just sorted everything a little better. Gauges and hot lap now have dedicated 12v, switched 12v and grounding leads instead of the random BS that was going on before.

Also, since my gauge cluster hasn't worked in forever, I kissed that motherfucker goodbye. Ordered an overpriced blanking plate and I'm going to piece my own together.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406561110

I have Prosport Premier water temp and oil press in the car currently but I'm not in love with them, especially with the addition of the Pivot tach. They don't "fit" anymore so I'll probably unload them. I ended up getting back the Defi D's that I had in my EVO, or at least the ones I requested; Water temp, oil temp and oil press. I need some sensors and a harness to have the setup 100% functional but even then, their illumination type and color won't match the tach, so I might unload those as well and just scour YAJ for some Pivot temp press gauges.

So a while back I ordered a tombstone and a gauge cluster hood from some dude with the intention of "completing" dash and further trying to beautify my interior. Package shows up, open it up and found a tombstone and a gauge cluster....

I tossed that shit in the closet and forgot about it. A couple of weeks go by and I get a wild hair up my ass so get the cluster out of the closet and install it, to my surprise everything works! Well, the water temp and oil pressure gauges are pegged because those sensors no longer exist in the bay, the speedometer doesn't work because my cable didn't plug into the 6 speed and the tach only worked under 75% throttle, otherwise it "died" and drops to 0 but hey, the fuel gauge seemed to work!

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406561110

So here we are, I'm going to try to keep the fuel gauge as part of my custom cluster by either clearing this one out or attaching the gauge itself to the ABS sheet.

Fuel gauge seems to work, kind of a sloppy cut but Ideally I'd like to remake this out of cf later on. New hood should arrive this week, dash will finally look completed.

Threw a set of 5mm spacers on the rear and I think it looks GREAT. I'll get another pair for the fronts next week. It's a little low in the rear after driving it home so I'll probably raise it up a tad when I do the front hats.

It rode AMAZING. I went over RR tracks that usually jolt me out of my seat and the car just glided over them like an actual street car would have done.

Hit the dyno yesterday!

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406561498

Showed up, unloaded and waited for them to move some cars around so we could get on the dyno and strapped down.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406561498

The first pull:

First off, here's my current mod list:

SM 1.8 block (presumed balanced)
99 head
99 intake manifold
Ex-Intake mod
Shaving Seconds custom-built header with matched primaries
Shaving Seconds custom-built 2.5" exhaust to twinloop eBay muffler
AriBuilt intake and cold air box (filter behind driver's headlight)
Toyota COP conversion

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406561498

I made 110/102, which isn't really not really what I was expecting based off of the "Super Miata 140whp mod path"...

99-05 cylinder head or complete engine. 100% stock (Mine has a "better" intake cam)
Generic exhaust header. Racing Beat is recommended (check)
Generic high flow exhaust and cat delete. Racing Beat, Borla XR-1 and Flowmaster are good options (check)
DIY or aftermarket intake pipe and cone filter (check)
Programmable engine management computer (ECU) and a good tune (check)
91 octane pump gas (check)

Here's an example Super Miata Dynojet with the above mods:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406561498

Obviously there's a lot of variables in dyinoing vehicles and I get that but I don't think I'm crazy when I say that should be better equipped than your basic Super Miata car, if only by a little bit. I do feel that this dyno may be off ~10whp but even if that were confirmed, I'd still be low. Ari logged both pulls and my AFRs were on point but I do think there's more exploring to me done with my current setup.

Made some changes, I'm sure none of you care.

Decided to run with NASA AZ the past weekend at Inde Motorsports Ranch in Wilcox, AZ. Great track, my second trip in 3 years and hoping to make in a bi-annual thing.

In an effort to ensure that the car would stay cool on track I finally did what so many of you kept urging me to do and got off my ass and knocked out a coolant reroute. While I was in there (the engine bay) I did the t-belt, water pump, virtually all seals, etc...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413389387

Back together:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413389387

I also stole a page from sixshooter's book and went with some STi vents for extraction duties.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413389387

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413389387

Loaded up and rolled out last Friday.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413389387

It was my second time running with NASA AZ so I registered DE3 and got bumped to DE4 on Sunday, finally. I also ran the UMS Time Attack on Sunday, placed 3rd with a 1:55.21 against a pretty well prepped TTE Miata (1:53.09) and a TTD turbo first gen Fit (1:54.59), both on NT01s to my Rivals.

So here i sit after a great NASA weekend having made it to DE4 and pondering what to do. NASA AZ runs twice a year at Inde, both are two-day events.

After chatting with some of my Miata life NASA bros all weekend I kinda feel like TTE might be something worth trying out. I'm set up for it currently except for by bitch-boy tires and 6-speed... Probably gonna sell the 6-speed and get a 5 back in the car, order a set of RC1 (unofficial NASA AZ TTE spec tire) and see if I can turn those two weekend a year events into possibly walking away with a few free tires?

All my BS aero plans go out the window in this scenario so I'd just have to have a local track setup (splitter, wing, etc) and a NASA setup but we'll see what happens.

Stock 10-15-2014 12:17 PM

Here's my Time Attack runs from Sunday. I got a little loose on my first lap coming on to the front straight and fucking grabbed 5th on both laps at different times. Feel like I could have gotten second but whatever.

I forgot to even mention temps!

As most of you know, NASA DE run groups are usually 20 minute sessions. I've been running at my home track since '07 so I rarely do 20 minute sessions anymore... I'd get 10 or so minutes in (on a 1:21 track) and start seeing around 210* and I knew that wasn't going to fly at Inde (1:55 track) so that's what sparked the reroute and vents.

So I did 4 20 minute sessions per day at Inde and saw 200* [i]once[/] and that was the session I was glued to the back of a Civic hatch (best 20 minutes of driving I had in years, shook his hand and thanked him after the session). Average temps for the weekend were rock-solid at 180* and that's without any sort of ducting or belly pan.
