Got all the boot carets in. I have never had any in this car and got them with the interior carpet

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442741180

Its a bit dusty now but vacuums up mint

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442741180

Pulled my boost gauge apart. Wouldn't recommend it unless you are very patient, Im not. This is primer

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442741180

Put back together. It looks ok but not 100% happpy with it. Mounted the sterio and hooked up the lc-1 and boost controller. There is a serious amount of wiring behind here

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442741180

Vinyl wrapped the speaker panels. (The line came out with the heat gun)

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442741180

Wrapped the top bolster on the right. Left is factory.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442741180

Made a panel for the gauges in MDF and vinyl on top.

I have given myself next weekend to work on the car and progress will be slow for the next month or so. I need to save up for some more parts and have work to do on my house. Still aiming to have the car ready for summer

Update

Well I'm back with some more updates :)

Has been another crazy busy month with work and life

Went to a Tedx conference which was pretty cool and met some cool people.

Actually met a guy with an electric mx5

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1445646895

It was really well built. Needed more turbo

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1445646895

And the petrol car you could build for that price....

Have gotten a lot of little jobs out of the way. Mainly tidying up the interior

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1445646895

Gauges and control panel all mounted for the last time....needs more stainless things IMO will get the car going first

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1445646895

Autoclutch Custom built this clutch setup for my car very happy with their business so far hoping it will hold up well. Its a carbon kevlar faced clutch plate with a modified cover plate for more clamping force

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1445646895

Installed in the car note my random green clutch line

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1445646895

Got a tidy new gearbox from my parts guy will get that in this weekend too hopefully.

After reading all of the fail with debris getting in peoples oil, I'm quite nervous for starting my car up. Will be changing the oil after 20kms 500kms and 1000kms.

Will have more updates soon hopefully tires, porting my wastegate and downpipe

car is looking great. makes me want to build a clean street car, instead of a race car that is currently dirty as hell.

Thanks I appreciate it :) :likecat:The panel work is really average though will have to sort this out next year at some stage. The more I spend on this car the more I wish I had got a nice tidy unregistered car and made a dedicated race car. I am still young though... and it seems you can't just have one miata

My next project will be this

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446008443

1980 Mazda B1600 with a BP coversion and front and rear suspension :) its a miata ute basically

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446008443

Have since sold the flat deck and got a proper tray

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446008443

I crashed my first mx5 when I was 16 and wrote it off. I parted it out and sold the suspension to the guy that was building this ute. It has all of my original cars brakes suspension and subframes. More photos will follow at some stage. It is seriously clean under the cab. Fully powdercoated everything and most new bits through out. I got it for a steal really, as the guy moved to Australia and needed to sell it. Its going to be a while before this gets done. Need to finish my house, think about getting married etc other more important things. My girlfriend has been surprisingly patient with the mx5 though. Anyway enough rambling I need to order some more bits :P

Downpipe under way.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446628244

Needed a little bit more clearance from the rail.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446628244

Package turned up from carbon miata

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446628244

Stoked with the speaker panels :)

Hopefully the downpipe will be close to finished tonight. My brothers friend has gone way beyond the call of duty. He is doing crazy hours at work and still has time to fit my stuff in. Really pleased with his fab skills. I didn't have the time/patience to have a go at the DP even though I was planning to. Should have some more photos this weekend

Found this and had a good laugh

Thinking about getting a skunk 2 TB because not really interested in inhaling a TB screw,
Anyone running one and think they are awesome? They are bigger than my factory one right? Will look into a manifold at some stage too as I'm sure mine will flow like crap, just like my head.

Thanks haha. My brothers mate is a legend. I have met him twice and its almost like we just became best friends. They are heavy fab hence the durability of the dp.

Mobius 11-17-2015 02:31 AM

That is good steampunk.

I like my skunk2. It is a bit larger than stock. It has no provisions for coolant, so expect to give that up.

Haha thanks guyths :likecat:

Thats interesting about the coolant. What intake are you running? Is there any data on gains from the bigger TB? I can't imagine it can hurt though (not that I'm a scientist or anything)

Did you end up coming to NZ Mobius?

Need to sort out a few things to start it up.

Half filled with coolant and noticed a leak on the o ring up the front by the waterpump

need to finish the exhaust and mount the O2 sensor then fingers crossed it will go..

Still to buy/finish
Exhaust
Mount the bumper/front guards
Rough tune check timing etc
Waste gate actuator
Tires
Alignment
Warrant of fitness
Registration
Start road tuning
Final check of bolts over the car
Tidy tune up some more
Hopefully enjoy the car and drive the crap out of it :)

Still going to change coils and throttle body at some stage soon for peace of mind

jimmyneutron 12-19-2015 11:27 PM

Update

Fixed the coolant leak only to find another one :vash: Sorted the next one out. it was easy i overlooked tightening one of the An fittings.

Go to prime the oil pump... Battery is dead have to wait overnight to charge that. Pulled out fuel injection fuse and spark plugs. Wind it over and over....
Finally oil pressure builds and comes out of the turbo feed which was left off to check for pressure. Tighten that down. Install the plugs again and put the fuse back in. Hoping for a miracle here, Notice a fuel smell after a few cranks look at the injectors, #2 is soaked in fuel. Decide to call it a night I worked 70+ hours and can't do life before some sleep.

Feeling refreshed after a good nights sleep I pulled off the fuel rail and check #2 injector. A torn O ring. Don't know how I managed to do this twice? I have never had this problem before. Re Install with a new O Ring. Wind it over.... really nervous at this stage. It fire right up and build oil pressure idling a bit high at about 2000rpms will need to finish the exhaust and check spark timing etc. Gave it a tiny blip to about 3500rpms its so much more responsive! I'm Excited to go for a drive now!

The luge in Rotorua is good fun. Much better than the luge in Queenstown.

You asked earlier about my intake, which I only just now saw. It's a flat-top ported to the skunk2 TB. Best for power up high; the vics manifold is best for power overall.

Agreed Its great fun! Queenstown Is a cool place but yeah the luge isn't nearly as good.

Thanks will have to keep a look out for one of them. I'm sure there will be easy gains over the normal manifold

Update

Have been too busy with friends weddings for any updates. The car is going and legal :). I have done almost 400kms of running in so far and have just hooked up the wastegate and is making about 5-6psi I might have to port my wastegate I fear this is boost creep. Really looking forward to winding up the boost and hopefully have someone lined up to dyno the car in the near future. I still want to replace my throttle body before I turn up the boost so I will order a skunk2 one from fab9 soon. The car feels so much more responsive and handles sooooo much better than it did with the old bushes and heavy wheels.

Have sorted the Intercooler pipe, haven't polished it nicely yet though just in case it blows off again

jtsoldier 03-16-2016 05:14 AM

that was awful silly of you then... dammit. I'm still waiting for my turbo to show up. Was intending to start on my car in a couple of weeks.

You get it recerted then? Back to Don?

And how is your EBC solenoid mounted? It looks like it is just sitting there...

Yeah I felt pretty stupid when it came off it was like a 1/3 tightened down so as soon as I built real boost it came off.

I haven't yet just got a warrant and they didn't pick up on the wheels not matching my cert plate. I still have my 17s though so I can swap back at some stage.... for legalities sake

The EBC is bolted down but in that photo the I/C pipe must have hit it because the bracket was bent. First time I have one blow off. I thought something worse had happened because of the metal scraping noise on the road (was freaking out that the motor went pop) :eggplant::rofl::party:

jimmyneutron 04-17-2016 04:38 AM

Update

Have put 1500kms on the motor over the past few weeks, and have been DD It for the past week or so.

I upgraded to the skunk2 throttle body from the standard 1.6 and fm spacer... I'm sure this was a huge restriction. Still need to port match the manifold to the TB at some stage.

The Good

Tire and wheels package

The body stiffening and poly bushings.

The interior is a much nicer place to be! I need a roll bar and a bucket seat

Throttle response and spool time are much improved.

The fun this car has been around the hills
I have been out most nights just driving with no purpose, I can't remember doing this for a few years

The bad

No Rev counter is starting to get annoying I'm sure one of the COPs is dying

My Fan has decided to stop working occasionally and Is being a troublesome thing to fix.

My cold starts are horrendous I need to get this sorted. Im sure the COPs are partly to blame because I had no issues when using the standard coil packs. Debating fab9s cop setup

My ride height is too low for Christchurch roads I scrape my front lip daily on my driveway.

A slight oil leak and exhaust leak which don't bother me too much because of how minor they are but I would still like to get them sorted out at some stage.

I am planning to keep DD through the winter, I love having the power to pass other traffic. Driving a non turbo diesel ute does take its toll on you after a while. Am going to build some detcans and get my tune more sorted then will turn the boost up some more. Its set to around 10psi and is an absolute blast. First and second are fairly useless now.

My goal power wise is around 300whp I'm not too fussed as long as I can run into the 12s my PB is a 13.3 with my old setup so I dont think I will be far off.

I want to tidy up my body work the guards and front bumper are the worst panels.

Just want to thank everyone on MT for your knowledge shared It makes it much easier to build a car when almost everything has been discussed before

Will keep updates coming

Jimmy

jtsoldier 09-01-2016 07:05 AM

Any updates, Jimmy?

I just got mine back, but she's boost creeping like a bitch so gonna try sort that out before pushing any further.

Was 222rwhp at 7/8/8/9/9/10/10/11/10psi (as I say, creeping...).

Haven't actually done too much to the car, have been dailying it so just enjoying it really. Have done around 5000ks with this set up. Only issue reliability wise was one of the frost plugs went bad and dumped all of my coolant typical as I never changed them when the engine was apart.

Have been working on a cold air box with my friend and hoping he will help me out with a catch can set up at some stage.

Also wired in launch and flat shift which I don't think my gearbox will enjoy but will be great for the dragstrip, which I hopefully have two events coming up in the next month or so.

Really need a roll bar so I can do some track work.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3463f0333c.jpgThe cold air feed which i would like to change as I'm not a fan of the meshing.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5bc57fdc48.jpgIdeally need a slightly bigger filter will probably need some extra clearance though. Going to do a bonnet stay mod this is why the box has no gap for the bonnet stick.

Need to move the ebc solenoid as its not the best place for it.

My younger brother just brought his wife a bone stock 89 NA its hilarious how much different our cars are and man I cant believe how slow it was hopefully I can talk him into boosting it.

Will have more soon

Jimmy

Bumping for updates maybe?
Did you balance the ebay rods? I'm considering a set soon
Also how are the cops doing on ms1? any wiring changes?

Hi,
Sorry didn't see your reply

I didn't balance the rods just weighed what was closest to the pistons and paired them up.
One thing that would be better and make less vibration for sure but It was a garage rebuild and i did it myself and didn't really want to pay for a machine shop

I have swapped back to the standard coils for the moment because the factory ones have been easier for cold starts probably going to do a ls coil swap at some stage although pretty sure I will need an ms3 for that ideally. The toyota cops have been great really but only had a hard time getting the tach to work all the time. They definitely gave a stronger spark and weren't miss firing at around 19 psi on my old set up.

Have some more small updates https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...eae26ec689.jpgStarted making a boost leak tester

Been a while since I've been on here,

Getting married and having kids does that I guess,

I've been trying to sort out EBC lately on my MS3x and aren't having much luck, I'm getting huge gains of boost with minimal changes to duty, I set at 18% duty and hit 20psi 15% is wastegate pressure or 10 psi, all open loop settings, (I will attach some logs and the tune when I have my laptop with me)

Has anyone had a similar issue?

Cheers Jimmy
