Hi guys long time lurker here

Thought it was about time I made my own build thread

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1434271295

This is my car after owning it for a year I repainted it with my dad.Sadly got very few photos of this and all the work it entailed

Fast forward until 2013 when I found mt.net and a cheap turbo set up, super laggy t3/t4 knock off turbo complete with a gtx motor and "bolt in and go"
some joke that turned out to be.

I had all the pieces "ready to go"

so the assembly began

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1434271295

The old 1.6 engine had to come out so a good mate of mine helped me swap everything over and put the new motor in.

Then came to bolt the manifold on

It was quite warped but I didn't notice and bolted it on anyway

(The manifold was made of decent material just wasn't made very well)

got everything bolted up turbo oil lines etc.

The IC pipes were made of steel and were very rusty inside and didn't line up at all. So I decided to trailer the car to have the new aluminum pipes made up
from a local fabricator.

He mentioned that i had an oil leak (I didn't think much of it at this stage as the car was still in pieces)

The car was almost ready at this stage just needed the engine management sorted

This was also when I discovered megasquirt from you guys.

A local guy from up in the north island (I live in the south island) was building megasquirts, I picked one up from him. Its a ms1 extra which is very basic
and I soon had that running.

I couldn't get it to run properly. The problem was very simple in the end but i tried everything else first coil packs, leads ,plugs nothing made a difference
Until one of my mates came over and wondered if i had put the fuel lines round the wrong way. When I had swapped the motors (was 1.6, gtx motor was 1.8) Instantly started right up and ran decently.

After feeling like the biggest idiot the car was ready to drive

The ecu had a base map for a gtx motor so it was reasonably close and ran smoothly

I got an innovate lc-1 and got that wired in and the car was ready for veal
tuning.
I had been waiting about 6-9 months to drive the car at this stage

I Grinned like a kid with an ice cream the first time I hit positive pressure 5psi
wastegate spring was all I ran to start with. The car was transformed it was much faster and I was hooked on boost

The next thing I added was a greddy mbc which did work ok and I hooked it up wrong the first time and hit the boost cut (250 kpa) talk about jerky :jerkit: I thought I had broken something. After doing some research I figured out the vacuum lines were the wrong way around.

I slowly increased the boost 1-2 psi until 12 Psi man the car was fast now.

At the time I was living at my parents house and they have a sign from the petrol station intersection and the open road sign (100 Kph) its literally 400m or a 1/4 mile. This is how I used to test my modifications. The standard mx5 did 140kph by the sign but now it was doing 175-180kph depending how many gears I did.

The car stayed like this for about 6 months I had to get certification for the turbo and the bigger engine. Its around $500 and if you change anything you have to get another certification, its a frustrating system.

To save myself from having to go back for a recert a friend of mine talked me into swapping the suspension to coilovers.

I found a tidy set of tein super streets from the local mazda wrecker (who is also very into Mx5s)

Once I had them done it was ready to be road legal again,
I daily drove the car for six months and the car turned heads and I had lots of people try to race me down our motorways (The best fun beating V8s wrxs etc)

A drag meet came up in Oamaru which is 300km south of where I live in Christchurch, so a few of my friends and brothers came down with me.

I knew theoretically my car could run 13s (according to my sign test)

My uncle races an old Ford Fairlane which is fairly serious 600whp+ He thought I would be doing 14s as his best was 12.7and it wasn't a prepped track.

I even raced him a few times for fun

My best was a 13.3 and I was surprised a little mx5 with a turbo could be so fast. I beat a few skylines an rx7 and some other v8s all who were shocked

Then came the drive home. I decided to check the fluids etc and i had used almost a liter of oil. Wasn't sure whether to be concerned or not. Drove back home to Christchurch

I drove the car for another three months my oil consumption continued to increase.
Eventually it got as bad as a liter a week of oil and a fairly big blue smoke cloud following me around. I decided to pull the motor and inspect it. This is what i found

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1434273752

A fairly big chuck of the piston clearly from either bad tuning or the motor being worn to start with.

I found a cheap low mileage motor on Trademe (like craigslist) for $500 I picked it up and and installed it.

This motor was so much quiter than the old gtx engine.
Much less lifter tick and it ran stronger too being 9.1cr compared to 8.1 would have helped though.

Drove the car for 6 months no issues and enjoyed it.

Broke the standard 1.6 vsld replaced it with a later model torsen

Drove it some more smashed something in the gearbox still drove in all gears but was getting worse with each drive replaced it with a 6 speed that was in very good condition.

At this stage the Mazda parts wrecker and I were on a first name basis.

decided to go back for the drags in Oamaru a year later

Did plenty of runs. Struggled to come to grips (pun intended) with the new gearbox/diff ratios

Best run 13.6 at 108mph spinning most of the way through first and second

The big turbo seemed to suit the 5 speed better and was easier to drive

Last run I did I am sure would have been in the 12s I launched hard in 2nd and it hardly spun and i was beating the car who I knew was doing 13.0s.
At the 300m or so mark my gearbox decided it had had enough and would not go into 5th gear and i had to cruise through in 6th.

I limped the car back to the pit area and went and watched a few other races

I came back to the car and thought I would be able to select some of the lower gears. Managed to get it stuck in 3rd gear and drove back to my uncles house where he said i could leave it. Driving back at 5-6000 revs was not a fun drive and it took ages.

Put the gear shifter back together and was about to leave when I thought I would move it to a better place. Tried the gearbox and could get into 2nd and 3rd 4th and 6th decided we might be able to drive back after all.

Got the car back at about 2am it was a slow drive back.My girlfri
end had to drive back from Ashburton an hour from Christchurch as i was too tired from the days efforts.

A couple of weeks later I pulled the box to see what was wrong with it

Found a workshop manual on here with instructions

Found this

That is the 1st and 5th gear selector and it was wedging it out of 1st i could still occasionally get 5th gear.

Managed to get an rx8 one for $50 and put it back together (what an absolute mission! those little detent balls)

Got everything assembled that was January this year and drove it until march.

Was running well everything running nicely and I had a vacuum line come off my wastegate had a boost spike to ~20psi was scary fast but i knew it shouldn't have done that. Drove it quietly home got a couple of streets away and this odd noise was coming from the engine thought it was a loose belt or something. All the belts were present and accounted for.

Thats when I pulled the engine and found this

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1434275345

which was bent both ways fairly badly so naturally I bought some fresh rods (ebay special)

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1434275345

and fresh acl bearings, rings bore looked ok and bearings in much better condition than the gtx engine did.

So the car is in bits now and I had gone a little overboard and the sub-frames are away getting powder coated, Frame rails installed

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1434275345

that brings us to where we are now

waiting on poly bushes from fab9 tuning and powder coaters

lots to buy still

Wheels
Tires
Head gasket
Oil Pump
Head studs
Seals
Carpet
Clutch
New 6 speed (not 100% happy with the fix still too notchy)

Thanks for reading

James

Update

Stripped out the engine bay ready for painting. I had a brake master cylinder leak which ruined one side, shouldn't be too bad a job to tidy up.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1434366928

I bought a new manifold and turbo set up should be much better

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1434366928

removed dash and old carpet heater boxes didn't get a photo sadly

wont get a chance to work on the car until the weekend now more updates then :)

18psi 06-15-2015 04:46 PM

manifold looks decent, way better than that hack job it's replacing. who's it made by? (trying to make out that emblem)

timk 06-15-2015 05:41 PM

Welcome from across the pond!

I have done the reversed fuel line thing too! :vash:

Did you mention an RX-8 gearbox or did I not read things right? Does the box bolt straight in?

jimmyneutron 06-15-2015 06:07 PM

The manifold is made here in nz a company called sinco customs very nice work. Sorry for the crappy pics.

The selector fork that I replaced was from an rx8 box.

The other manifold was the biggest pos :)

still planning on running MS? unfortunately doesn't seem the most well supported of EMS in town...

Yeah definitely what would I swap it to?

Megasquirts and mx5s go together like candy canes and christmas.

Although an upgrade to ms3 is likely

jtsoldier 06-16-2015 03:32 AM

I don't know, but New Zealand as a whole seems to be pretty anti-MS.

But agreed, the majority of the MX5 crowd, even in NZ, are very heavy users. Just difficult to find a tuner outside of the north island who'd touch it, so left doing my own tuning on the road, where I can only touch about 30% of the cells. :/

I'm sure you understand the feeling...

jimmyneutron 06-16-2015 04:03 AM

Yeah man sure I know what you mean. Thats why I come to this forum and not others.
Ive heard Gary from PAD tuning will do megasquirts not sure if this is true. I have been very happy with my tune even though Ive cooked two motors, Still cheaper than buying a link and getting reamed $2000 for a tune. Where are you in Christchurch? Would I have seen you around?

jtsoldier 06-16-2015 04:29 AM

Oh yeah, agreed on the Link alternative. I hit up NZEFI (not knowing any better) for a price and that alone convinced me that even going to MS NZ in Tauranga would be cheaper. And to be honest, the Link sounds like the cheapest well supported alternative locally.

I doubt you would've seen me around - I actually live in Rolleston. Location is set to Christchurch on international forums so it's easier for them to find (quote shipping etc.) than anything. It's rare I see another New Zealander. Rarer that they're from the same city!

If you have seen it - it's a black 2001 - NB8C, relatively stock looking, excluding a rollbar and black with red lipped wheels.

EDIT: Sorry, a couple of other questions, since you're local:
1/ You did a 3" exhaust in your sig?, did you weld it up yourself, or can you recommend a fabricator?
2/ Who are you looking at to do your cert? I've read all sorts of nasty things about Don being a bit of a knob.

I'm accumulating parts now, looking to do it all over the summer.

jimmyneutron 06-16-2015 05:01 AM

What did they quote? It annoys me how much they charge people!

Yeah my mate helped with the exhaust he has a mig. Mark at Pitstop Hornby is good but i'd still expect it to be expensive.

Don did my cert and was fine to deal with honestly. You just have to do exactly what he wants which can be a pain.... Driveshaft loops are mandatory too.

Im in hornby It cracks me up your name is James and you live in Chch too so weird

timk 06-16-2015 07:21 AM

Haha, that wastegate dump looks like a tree root.

18psi 06-16-2015 09:08 AM

Yep, should be a really big improvement

jtsoldier 06-16-2015 02:45 PM

Can't remember price in total, or with much actual precision, but it was around $2300 for ECU and wiring (since there is no Link PNP for 01).
Plus dyno time on top.

Did you keep any MS logs from the old setup? Be interesting to see how much difference a best-to-worst scenario gives you on the manifold. You must've paid out the ass for anything from SINCO anyway.

Most of my mates had exhausts from Uniweld, so tempted to go there on their recommendations alone. Doing my best to do everything I can't myself on a "I'll provide, you manufacture" basis so will source my own muffler and cat and beg someone to link it all up. Like you, it'll probably be done on the advice of this forum.

If you live in Hornby, chances are you've seen me parked up at Repco what seems like at least once a week for the past three months. You can never have enough tools. Hahahaha.

The manifold was $700 I think its pretty good considering it has a 5 year crack warranty, also was a one week turn around

I have had work done at Uni Weld. I cant remember his name. He always fits you in and does a nice job.

I did run into an issue though

Two of my inserts were too long and had far too much clearance for my bolts.

I have emailed Fab 9 will see what he says. I might have too just go to our local mount shop and get some to suit.

Pics of said issues

This one not so much

jtsoldier 06-20-2015 09:31 PM

$700? Only?

That's really not too bad at all for what you're getting. Maybe when I go mad and build the engine... hmmm!

jimmyneutron 06-20-2015 09:54 PM

Just not worth having a crappy one in my experience. Too much hassle having it crack all the time. That and if it takes out your motor or turbo. Do it!

Midtenn 06-20-2015 10:55 PM

Are you sure you have the sleeves in all the correct position? There are some bushings with with the same outer diameters and similar lenfth in the kits. You might have the bushings/sleeves for the rear-lower-outer bushings in the inside position. Also the front-upper-inners also have a lager through bolt.

If you haven't already, check further down the frame/tunnel under the master cylinders. I had the same issue and the brake fluid made it's way all the way down.

Just waiting on some new foam tape and the sound deadening then I can re install.

Thoughts on dash keep the na one or do the nb swap?

I have two nb dashes in reasonable condition and the na one I removed had a good crack in it. Can get a new one through my parts guy in mint condition. I do fear that if I do get a new na one it might crack anyway because of brittle plastic. The nb dashes are a lot more forgiving.

My Girlfriend is going to make me some of these not sure they would go too well with the nb dash though although I haven't seen them paired up.

My certification plate for modifications. Sorry for crappy pic. In New Zealand you have to get your car certified for changing almost anything on your car. Adjustable suspension wheels even... its not the best system. About 10-15 years ago you could do almost anything to your car as long as it passed its warrant of fitness (WOF) now you can't change your car if it doesnt match the cert plate. Even reverting it back to stock.

Still waiting on oil pump etc and ball joints.

My Wheels (15x8 Advantis) should be here this week or early next week!

That answers one question quite nicely though.

So when I take mine in, some time next year, to get certed, I have to include the hardtop attached for certifying? And that is then noted as detachable on the plate/paperwork?

Looks like you're making heaps of progress to me. I'm still trying to find a gap in the weather to bloody clean it! :(

Yeah basically how you are going to drive it. The laws have gotten much stricter over the last 10 or so years. I hardly doubt they would pull you up on a hardtop as they come factory, you can choose what to get certified too wof shops don't always pick up on everything. I don't want to give insurance an opportunity to void my cover though.

Its really hard to be motivated when its this cold.

Aiming to have the car drivable by November

Engine management? fwiw- You Kiwis are home for FreeEMS if you are up for an adventure. ;) I know there are more than a few cars in NZ running it.

Currently ms1 although I am planning to swap to a ms3 at some stage. Link and haltec are the most common here.

m2cupcar 07-24-2015 08:02 AM

Yep- Christchurch is Link's home. I worked with those guys to do their first NB Miata install on my race car. They were great.

Nice :) what generation link was that? I'm sad that Megasquirt doesn't have a big following here. No one wants to tune them and some of the guys that sell them give them a bad name. It is a plus that link does a pnp for mx5 though even though it's like twice the price of an ms3. Was that through nz efi?

m2cupcar 07-26-2015 03:16 PM

That was in 1999- it was whatever Link had for a wire-in ecu at the time. I got it through a U.S. Link rep who put me in touch with Link HQ in NZ.

Forgot to mention that I put the oil pan back on. Used Three bond which is the best sealant I have come across and hasn't leaked in my experience. Would recommend it if anyone is looking for sealants :)

Finally got the head installed and the timing belt done

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

The quality of these studs is great and the lube it comes with is amazing too.

Head Torqued to 60 ft lbs will check again after first drive

Seems a real shame to cover the new timing belt

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

New rocker gasket and started bolting the manifold on...

It was at this stage that I realized that two of the holes in the manifold didn't have much clearance for the nuts

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

I thought about grinding the clearance it really isn't actually that much.

Will talk to Mike from Sinco and see what he says. I don't want to void my warranty

Started putting the front end back together.

Steering rack cleaned up

Ground out all the old underseal and coated the front wheel wells very happy with the result

Next on the shopping list is a clutch, flywheel and gearbox. Flywheel because mine is a 1.6 and The 1.8 one is better right?

Update

Slowly chipping away getting things done. Mainly wiring and making everything tidier. Ordered a new radiator hose set from Carbon Miata as my heater hoses were rotten from 25+ years of abuse.

Been figuring out what to do with my oil and water lines but aren't going to proceed until the clutch/gearbox and exhaust are sorted out.

Anyway less talk more photos

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440587690

More undersealing to do this weekend will carry on under the car.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440587690

Passenger side wiring is done. Have decided not to run the o2 sensor so close to the turbo this time. Not that I had any issues with it 150mm from the turbine on the old setup

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440587690

Have actually sorted most of the wiring on this side too not that it looks like it. Lights are back in

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440587690

got the bonnet catch cleaned up a bit and lubed the release cable. Intercooler cleaned and reinstalled. This intercooler seems to work well its some knock off brand but is reasonable quality,

Hopefully more updates soon. Will talk to the clutch shop this week. Got a flywheel from an nb should be better than the old one.

Update

Have been mucking around with some interior pieces and wiring (not really my favorite)
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Got my speakers installed and the window tracks greased, they work soooo much smoother now.

Fixed the passenger side door handle. The end had been snapped off. Put some sound deadening in the doors. Speakers are 6 1/2 inch kickers they go well. Probably would go better with an amp.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Replaced the moulding that goes around the inside of the window. It had two cracks in two different pieces. They bothered me for a long time. Is good to get some of these little ocd things fixed finally.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Moved the LC-1 hoping I can run the sensor down the hole of the gear stick. Anyone else done this?

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Need to mount this somehow at least most of the wiring is how it will stay now. Just have the boost controller to mount now.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Under sealed the tranny tunnel. Even though it will get filthy as soon as I start driving it.

Didn't get time to talk to the clutch shop yet, mainly because had a few un expected dentist bills and my clutch money is gone now. :(

Update 2

Forgot about the other things I have done lately. Life has been extra busy this year and am looking forward to things winding down soon.

Ordered some fittings for the turbo. Inlet/outlet they should get here this week. Also my radiator hoses should be here soon too.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Got some matching lights. The old ones were completely different to each other and were sealed units. Fixed the linkage on the drivers side. It has been loose and rattly for the last 5 years

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Alternator got cleaned/tested and came back good. wiring almost sorted on this side. Have decide to take my oil feed from the oil pressure sender. Not 100% on taking it off the head. The easy things never seem to pay off.<br/>

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Am going to make some panels to cover the wiring once the car is done. should look tidy imo.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Got the steering wheel in for good. Got it from Japan last year when I was over there. As far as I know its genuine

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Steering dust covers came for a couple of my joints that didn't get replaced. Front suspension is ready to go now. Aside from an alignment that is.

Got a deal on another 6 speed box. Will get my other one fixed so I have a spare.

Hopefully won't be so long in between updates :)

Got the oil feed sorted

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Used the OPG route because no feed on turbo side :( pretty happy really came out tidy enough. I really hope nothing will leak

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Intake manifold back on, radiator in. Injectors in. Need to do some work to the injector harness its pretty rough.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Seats cleaned up and back in. (On the look out for some track seats) not that I have the money at the moment.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Going to mount this under the stereo this time. Mainly because don't actually look at gauges all that much and vents have more priority. I will polish the scratches out before it goes back in.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Have pulled off the aluminum edge and am going to paint it black to suit the edge on the afr gauge.

Going to talk to clutch shop tomorrow hopefully as its really starting to halt progress and summer is coming and the car needs to be going.

m2cupcar 09-16-2015 12:10 PM

fwiw- Your oil feed/sensor arrangement will fail. Too much cantilevered load makes it a tuning fork. Hard mount the T, sensor and feed line to the body/chassis with a line run from the block to the T.

I will be surprised if this fails. Will give you credit if it does though. I was worried on the number of fittings but the guy who I got them from said they would be sweet and they are a race shop. Thanks for the input though :)

m2cupcar 09-17-2015 07:55 AM

I only mentioned it because it's been documented here. Doesn't seem to be a question of IF but WHEN.

Ok After some research I can see where you are coming from. I really don't want to take the IM off again :(. I will look into it. From what I can see its the brass that fails more than aluminum or steel. I honestly didn't even think about the vibrations from the engine. I will have to swap a few of the fittings out but not really a huge deal. Thanks though I need less Fael in my car life :)

Got a few other small things done

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442556753

Finally tidied the injector loom. I'm glad I did as two of the water temp sender wires were half broken. Im hoping this will explain why the gauge went berserk sometimes.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442556753

Talked to the clutch shop. Freshly skimmed flywheel. The clutch I am getting is a modified pressure plate and a full faced kevlar clutch disk. Apparently I will never need to do a clutch again for this vehicle. I will be happy if its true

Going to look at my gauges this weekend and hopefully finish the door cards with my girlfriend
