Engine management? fwiw- You Kiwis are home for FreeEMS if you are up for an adventure. ;) I know there are more than a few cars in NZ running it.

Currently ms1 although I am planning to swap to a ms3 at some stage. Link and haltec are the most common here.

m2cupcar 07-24-2015 08:02 AM

Yep- Christchurch is Link's home. I worked with those guys to do their first NB Miata install on my race car. They were great.

Nice :) what generation link was that? I'm sad that Megasquirt doesn't have a big following here. No one wants to tune them and some of the guys that sell them give them a bad name. It is a plus that link does a pnp for mx5 though even though it's like twice the price of an ms3. Was that through nz efi?

m2cupcar 07-26-2015 03:16 PM

That was in 1999- it was whatever Link had for a wire-in ecu at the time. I got it through a U.S. Link rep who put me in touch with Link HQ in NZ.

Forgot to mention that I put the oil pan back on. Used Three bond which is the best sealant I have come across and hasn't leaked in my experience. Would recommend it if anyone is looking for sealants :)

Update

Finally got the head installed and the timing belt done

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

The quality of these studs is great and the lube it comes with is amazing too.

Head Torqued to 60 ft lbs will check again after first drive

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

Seems a real shame to cover the new timing belt

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

New rocker gasket and started bolting the manifold on...

It was at this stage that I realized that two of the holes in the manifold didn't have much clearance for the nuts
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

I thought about grinding the clearance it really isn't actually that much.

Will talk to Mike from Sinco and see what he says. I don't want to void my warranty

Started putting the front end back together.

Steering rack cleaned up

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1439459894

Ground out all the old underseal and coated the front wheel wells very happy with the result

Next on the shopping list is a clutch, flywheel and gearbox. Flywheel because mine is a 1.6 and The 1.8 one is better right?

Update

Slowly chipping away getting things done. Mainly wiring and making everything tidier. Ordered a new radiator hose set from Carbon Miata as my heater hoses were rotten from 25+ years of abuse.

Been figuring out what to do with my oil and water lines but aren't going to proceed until the clutch/gearbox and exhaust are sorted out.

Anyway less talk more photos

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440587690

More undersealing to do this weekend will carry on under the car.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440587690

Passenger side wiring is done. Have decided not to run the o2 sensor so close to the turbo this time. Not that I had any issues with it 150mm from the turbine on the old setup

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440587690

Have actually sorted most of the wiring on this side too not that it looks like it. Lights are back in

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440587690

got the bonnet catch cleaned up a bit and lubed the release cable. Intercooler cleaned and reinstalled. This intercooler seems to work well its some knock off brand but is reasonable quality,

Hopefully more updates soon. Will talk to the clutch shop this week. Got a flywheel from an nb should be better than the old one.

Update

Have been mucking around with some interior pieces and wiring (not really my favorite)
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Got my speakers installed and the window tracks greased, they work soooo much smoother now.

Fixed the passenger side door handle. The end had been snapped off. Put some sound deadening in the doors. Speakers are 6 1/2 inch kickers they go well. Probably would go better with an amp.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Replaced the moulding that goes around the inside of the window. It had two cracks in two different pieces. They bothered me for a long time. Is good to get some of these little ocd things fixed finally.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Moved the LC-1 hoping I can run the sensor down the hole of the gear stick. Anyone else done this?

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Need to mount this somehow at least most of the wiring is how it will stay now. Just have the boost controller to mount now.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441422894

Under sealed the tranny tunnel. Even though it will get filthy as soon as I start driving it.

Didn't get time to talk to the clutch shop yet, mainly because had a few un expected dentist bills and my clutch money is gone now. :(

Update 2

Forgot about the other things I have done lately. Life has been extra busy this year and am looking forward to things winding down soon.

Ordered some fittings for the turbo. Inlet/outlet they should get here this week. Also my radiator hoses should be here soon too.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Got some matching lights. The old ones were completely different to each other and were sealed units. Fixed the linkage on the drivers side. It has been loose and rattly for the last 5 years

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Alternator got cleaned/tested and came back good. wiring almost sorted on this side. Have decide to take my oil feed from the oil pressure sender. Not 100% on taking it off the head. The easy things never seem to pay off.<br/>

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Am going to make some panels to cover the wiring once the car is done. should look tidy imo.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Got the steering wheel in for good. Got it from Japan last year when I was over there. As far as I know its genuine

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441423868

Steering dust covers came for a couple of my joints that didn't get replaced. Front suspension is ready to go now. Aside from an alignment that is.

Got a deal on another 6 speed box. Will get my other one fixed so I have a spare.

Hopefully won't be so long in between updates :)

Got the oil feed sorted

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Used the OPG route because no feed on turbo side :( pretty happy really came out tidy enough. I really hope nothing will leak

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Intake manifold back on, radiator in. Injectors in. Need to do some work to the injector harness its pretty rough.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Seats cleaned up and back in. (On the look out for some track seats) not that I have the money at the moment.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Going to mount this under the stereo this time. Mainly because don't actually look at gauges all that much and vents have more priority. I will polish the scratches out before it goes back in.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442137938

Have pulled off the aluminum edge and am going to paint it black to suit the edge on the afr gauge.

Going to talk to clutch shop tomorrow hopefully as its really starting to halt progress and summer is coming and the car needs to be going.

m2cupcar 09-16-2015 12:10 PM

fwiw- Your oil feed/sensor arrangement will fail. Too much cantilevered load makes it a tuning fork. Hard mount the T, sensor and feed line to the body/chassis with a line run from the block to the T.

I will be surprised if this fails. Will give you credit if it does though. I was worried on the number of fittings but the guy who I got them from said they would be sweet and they are a race shop. Thanks for the input though :)

m2cupcar 09-17-2015 07:55 AM

I only mentioned it because it's been documented here. Doesn't seem to be a question of IF but WHEN.

Ok After some research I can see where you are coming from. I really don't want to take the IM off again :(. I will look into it. From what I can see its the brass that fails more than aluminum or steel. I honestly didn't even think about the vibrations from the engine. I will have to swap a few of the fittings out but not really a huge deal. Thanks though I need less Fael in my car life :)

Got a few other small things done

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442556753

Finally tidied the injector loom. I'm glad I did as two of the water temp sender wires were half broken. Im hoping this will explain why the gauge went berserk sometimes.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442556753

Talked to the clutch shop. Freshly skimmed flywheel. The clutch I am getting is a modified pressure plate and a full faced kevlar clutch disk. Apparently I will never need to do a clutch again for this vehicle. I will be happy if its true

Going to look at my gauges this weekend and hopefully finish the door cards with my girlfriend
