i decided i'd start a build thread while gathering pictures the other day
please dont reload you flame gun too soon,i'm from Montreal,Quebec so i cant be perfect translating everything i bought that little red 90 NA,160 000 km,woughly 100k miles.Tottal virgin,never been mod in any way. has been previously winter driven so it does have some little rust spot, but it's properly maintained for it's 21 years car is dirty as hell, i know Attachment 192951 Attachment 192952 Attachment 192953 Attachment 192954 sold my previous street race mx-3 to start this mx-5 project,so i started gathering parts even before actually buying the car bought a complete artech stuff, the whole setup was just too tempting,so i removed the whole oem exaust asap:P Attachment 192955 Attachment 192956 Attachment 192957 got the manifold on just to test-fit it with a 2871r i had lying around Attachment 192958 Attachment 192959 http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/102_1376.jpg allready got the MSPNP,460,turbokit is complete, i'm still waiting for my intercooler setup that stuck at the custom for god-knows-why. i'm making a plate to instal the COP and i'm starting to strip the interrior to put dynamat evrywhere and install the walbro. dumping the daisies for some xxr in the next month,god i hate daisies I intent of running this 1.6 engine while building another one in the garage spare time, hoping for the crank to hold on. but i just dont know what to do for now with the turbo, the 2871 has the .86 ar housing and is just plain too big for a street-non-build-250ish whp setup.so i'm actually trying to tradi it for a gt52560rs or a potato with smaller houssing, that would be more suitable for let say,next 2 years. i bought a FM2 clutch kit and i'm going to get my 6speed+torsen out of a 2002 next week. while the drivetrain will be more suitable for everyday beatting vs the old 1.6 open shit,I'm still in a lot of confusing tought about the suspention I dont want to pay a 2000$ suspention setup since i mainly drive it on the street,ocasionally gonna try the track(even if i'm used to 350whp dosent prepare me for the rwd-quicker boosting setup)wich i wait for a used setup to get on sale this winter, wich i buy something based on forum speculation i dont want a super harsh race setup, and i dont want a super-drop-slammed either. a 1inch drop is way enough for what i'm looking for. so if you have any sugestion, feel free p.s: please dont mind the typos and failed basic ponctuation. |

founded a full intercooler piping kit,including all the bungs,coupler+clamp+cooler. i'm still raping the for sale section,setup is not complete and winter is just starting(having a 6-month dead season is usually worst for the wallet) |

found one on an usa-imported 2002 that was in a front end accident. south shore of mtl,not that far, and i'm skipping the 500$ shipping+custom+taxes
quite lucky, I'm gonna make a deposit on it,dont want it gone the time i gather the money(1300$:facepalm: ) for now i'm just gonna drive it for fun, for a couple of reason did 5 years of 100+drag pass @ napierville dragway been drag racing for 5 years,never tried laping,autox,drift,etc Been building a bp-powered mx-3,got to learn a shitload of things while test-fitting new setup every winter.got from low 16 to low 12,on stock internal,stock tires/drivetrain:P never been on a track exept for 1/4 miles,and i just got tired of exploding a transmition a week(mazda oem fwd drivetrain sucks pass 250whp,and simply shread every run pass 300whp) so i moved on, was missing my ''stock but still fun'' 2 seater targa delsol,got to love the targa/convertible. and i was just sick of swapping transmition. One of my buddy (ABSRTP)got himself a mx-5 and was bragging about how cheap it was to mod VS our mx-3, had to check it out.got a ride in a NA 90 and just felt in love. parted out the mx-3, got 9k and started my little mx-5 project. to be brutally honest, it's my first rwd car, so i dont want to simply loose it since i feel like starting from scratch, i have to''re-learn'' to drive since i lost traction sooo often due to a fwd mad-boosting understeer. now i gotta learn to stay in line with oversteer. i'm reading each and every post i can find to learn as much/as quickly as i can on those platform so that ''gulp'' ..maybe..''sweat'' ...start to post on the forum without getting ban/flamed if i see a meet in ONT next summer, be sure to see me drive a 9h ride to see you all |
i frequently make the 3h journey to St. Eustache for their "drift thing nights" where they do time attack and drifting on sunday nights.

i ran a stock BP with over 22psi of boost on a t3t4E in my mx-3 for a couple of years,not affraid for now:P

Attachment 188742 first ride was cool, i was dying to take a ride since i first store it. but i noticed an exaust leak,so i went back in the garage,because it was causing some boost issue. how to feel retard in 2 easy step first drive test the car and notice a leak,look around to find a missplaced coolant bracket. must have been in a hurry not to have spotted this before. manifold with turbine bolted on is quite a tight fit to assemble to the artech downpipe, i mean REALLY tight fit. once it was bolting time i never re-taught of that.:loser: it's raining pretty bad/all the time around here, as soon as we have a day or 2 i'll up the boost to 10-12 psi |

been through a lot lately, haven't even taught about updating this page
had a couple of problems after blowing a first head gasket. changed it ,re-used the same bolts, and they stretched at 14 psi blowing YET ANOTHER head gasket in the same month. i even took my cylinder head to the machinist to make sure it was still flat, wich was...installed a cometic head gasket,new head bolts, and STILL had some coolant problem(overflow tank spilling everything only under hard runs, overheated sporadictly ,on only one of 2 gauges,fucked-up symptoms) car was simply un-safe for long trip.compression test got worst after 2 weeks, and a leak test revealed a cracked head.(fuck my life) head gasket damage after using a composite shit with used bolts. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1312408635 cracked cylinder head https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1312408635 got the old engine out and tried to find a new one. was about to get in a BP swap,when i felt uppon an add of a guy selling a turbo 1.6 miata engine with everything to go with it.previous owner smashed the miata while drifting, about 2 months after the build.his lost is my gain i suposed. i bougth the rebuilded 1.6 with all receipe of the build. only thing that haven't been changed, is the crank, cams and rods. every bearring,seal,gasket,oring,lifter,spring,EVERYTHIN G was replaced.even pistons, wich are from a canadian familia b6t for way lower compression. bought the engine 700$ and installed it on the same day:P perfect compression all across, a1 leak test.even the intake runners never saw oil vapor i think https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1312408635 took the time to install my 2 way alarm and the 255walbro https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1312408635 engine started on the first crank, ran like a charm, not even some lifter noise, i was TRILLED about going for a ride. engine revs faster than the old b6(sludge?)is a lot quieter(with the top on on a light, the whining of the walbro is louder than the iddle on a complete 3'') and the car pulls way harder and i'm at 9psi for now(was at 14 with the old engine) i also ditched the pile of shit of a suspention i was running. got a luck over a buddy going for teins. i bought back his kyb agx+groundcontrol coilover with eibach spring for 250$.lmfao pics to come just finished washing and waxing it, not to bad for a 1990 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1312408635 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1312408635 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1312408635 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1312408635 |

i'm taking the boost source from the FPR vaccum line, and i got it to hold on the coolant valve or what not(that i block anyway)

got my MS street tuned and upped the boost to 16 psi
i suck bad at tuning, and my spark map was plain dangerous,super happy that i got that solved.a buddy of mine knows MS tuning a bunch more than me i he helped me out on this one. also got my tach signal back online with the resistance trick founded here on mt.net,plus ABSrtp solved my bmw tps wiring problem:P only problem is that i broke off my speedo cable :( got a short clip 1.6 rebuilded short nose familia 8.5:1 pistons b6t rods garrett gt2560@16psi artech ram manifold+3'' exaust/muffler stock drivetrain on 205 50 15 marshall powerracer(cheap) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1314290763 conservative tune, 10.5-11 afr at wot. but with lower compression ratio, i could use more timing right? fack,i really need a dyno i guess |

my ubber cheap internal wastegate is setted to 3 psi(bought it that way) i tried to get it to 20 with the mbc, but it failed completely and showed peak only.
i need a better/external wastegate, and THEN a dyno. sorry mate, i dont have any pics of the pistons. |

yes i did, i allways wondered why the bars were going alongs the side of the seat, but i tought i couldn't tilt/move the seat back to the max with those.
figured out why after we made/installed it. bar can be a good 1''1/2 hight if made 4 inches foward. now my head barely clear's it , but with a helmet on, it's plain impossible to clear it, even with my 3'' foamectomy on the driver seat. thanks for the reply, i'll try to make my choice asap.i rented the paintbooth for the first of may |

i just re-checked the video too, i had major leaks next-to-everywhere.
artech manifold cracked on 3 spots because it wasen't even decked properly, and,predictably(?),my turbo-to-manifold bolts stretched and destroyed my gasket. i decked everything and now i can hold boost way more efficiently,i had pretty hard time been steady last summer. now the car feels way quicker at 13 psi than 18 last summer. cant wait to have a real tune. i really need a set of wheels and a quick tune. i'm so relef that my car is finally painted that i dont even think i'll buff it this summer.i just want to drive it hard, get sunburns, park it , and take pics,that's it!! please forgive the typos, i don't use english too often these days |
Why paint it if you arent going to buff it? I understand the whole driving it and not caring about how it looks (Look at my car, for reference LOL). But you could be damn certain if i took the time and money and painted my car that I'd buff it asap.

i'll buff it to remove dust/imperfection for sure, but i'm talking about the all-out wetsanding and buffing etc etc.i'll do, but probably not for now.
i spent about 6 month on the car working on it part time(remember, i have a part time job plus going to school) so i spent about 10h a week on it max now that i spent more time building/restoring it, i'm on the edge of hating the car with all the problems i encountered dusing that period,mainly because i didin't drive it enough to appreciate all the stuff i did. now i just hope the paint job i did is decent and i'll simply buff it a bit and then drive it all summer hoping not to open the hood once before long. more pics tomorow,as the car will be back home. |
Good deal man, I'm sure a good portion of this forum knows the whole "hating the car because of working on it too much" thing. I felt that way when i had the motor out of the car working on it, then the hardtop took a crash onto the floor cracking it in a few places really good. I'm over it now with the motor back in the car, and almost ready to drive. As long as the motor lasts a little while I'll be happy ;).

i'm kinda scared to post pics, i'm far from a track ready monster like 90% of the ppl here.
i'm still rocking some oem mx-3 wheels since i over blown my budget with the bodyworks.un-matched tires, and oem brakes makes me a laughable matter here. the car is a daily that i promptly beat each day, i'm not track oriented so my choices are way different.as i said, after fubar-ing my engine last summer, i didin't drive or almost last season. this year, all i want is boost/park/pics. next day or 2 is the re-assembling of the car, i removed almost all plastic/trim/weatherstrips/seal on the car, and half of them cracked mainly due to their 20+years old deterioration. |

Did you get the Spraymax color cans custom mixed? I've used their clear and it's amazing, but hadn't researched the color options. |
yup, using waterbase for the car, i really wanted to use the exact same stuff on my ''interrior''(no idea how to say it in english)
a can hold only 4 onz of paint, at 23-24 $ a can, better be doing something important. based on the brand you use, i like dupont best, it covers SO much, it's just crazy,i heard it's harder to color-match dupont product, but i'm not doing this as a living, it's my first attemp painting something since i finish school last march. i looked long for a blue that wasen't ''purple-ish''or a greenish one. this one is clearely royal blue pearl,i like it a lot, and it's beautifull as is, not too much metalic, enough ''in your face'' under sun/high lights. plus since i painted the rollbar bright silver, i'M really eager to see this thing under sun! i cant afford some nice wheels, but it's the next thing on my student-poor list. |

A blue car with black wheels is just the sexiest thing i'v ever seen. I am a huge fan of that paint scheme, your car looks great kaboshe! I hope you get black wheels! Will look sick
