Is it stainless?

leboeuf 12-17-2015 11:42 AM

Yes, the downpipe to the tail pipe will all be stainless.
I'm also giving solar flux a shot for the first time and will get some pics of what it does for backside sugaring. I don't have the provisions to back purge so hopefully it lives up to the hype.

aidandj 12-17-2015 11:44 AM

Interested. I specifically picked up a little 3 foot bottle and an ebay reg so I could backpurge. It ended up being cheap. You can also just split a hose.

leboeuf 12-21-2015 10:52 AM

Downpipe is tacked!
I spent the last 2 months reflooring my house... this metal fab is way more fun.
Those baller technicolor rainbow welds have eluded me

Now I just need to get that giant magnaflow figured out hah.

aidandj 12-21-2015 11:02 AM

Rainbow welds: more gas, more post flow. They grey means its oxidizing.

leboeuf 12-21-2015 11:14 AM

Ehh yeah I'm not too concerned.
I think a lot of it has to do with the flux stuff. It does seem to prevent the backside sugaring but it also makes the puddle harder to read. It makes a hard film over the (backside of the) weld a lot like flux core wire.
I was talking to a buddy who welds sanitary equipment and he was saying the only practical way is to back purge the entire tank. That way the argon is leaking everywhere and shielding constantly. He said they do 15 seconds of post flow and tape all joints to save on argon. He mentioned lenses and yada yada, its an exhaust pipe not a fermenting tank haha

leboeuf 12-21-2015 11:51 AM

Pics should be fixed. I really need to stop using google to host images...

aidandj 12-21-2015 01:51 PM

Try doing a short weld with like 5+ seconds of post flow, and keep the puddle in the weld until you see it snap off (it will suddenly darken when the argon turns off). If that doesn't get you a rainbow then blame it on the flux.

I tinkered around with the stainless some more. My issues were all technique...
Apparently you can't weld 16g stainless like schedule 40 mild steel? Hah way too much heat and way too much filler.
I need to get a shot of the backside but it looks like the solar flux works pretty good. It does burn red while you're welding though and can make it hard to see the puddle.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1450798852

I rigged up some lines and got that mammoth muffler placed. I'll be using the standard mt.net routes to the muffler. Old fisherman skills ftw.

leboeuf 12-30-2015 01:35 PM

Haha maybe? The fusion/minimal filler welds actually lay down pretty quick. Most of my time was spent laying under the car and test fitting.
I did say I was planning on using this exhaust to practice welding. :D

Sirnixalot 12-30-2015 01:42 PM

great work so far man

I'll have to give that solar flux a try. Even with all the post flow in the world I can't get rainbows. I think its because I'm using shitty chinese diffusers. Everyone knows you need toxicup's for rainbows

90civichhb 12-30-2015 03:08 PM

Whenever you build tight radius turns like that do you come at it from both sides or do you work from one end only? I found with my intercooler piping that I had to go from both ends to get the radius right, but that could be bad technique.

I think your exhaust looks great. It would be awesome to see something like that in the engine bay. I feel like much of your hard work is going to go unnoticed. :(

Yeah on that exhaust I built the 160 degree section separately, got the muffler hung, routed the pipe around the diff, then tacked everything together under the car.

I've been mostly skiing every day away from work but I've made some progress getting the intercooler mounted. I decided to build a shelf using the existing tow hook assemblies. The plan is to add a gazillion mounting points and subframe under the bumper to make ducting and maybe a future splitter an easier task.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e...10_232243.jpg?

Also picked up one of these ra(i)cy things to serve as a danger to intercooler warning.

My driveway still looks like this so no miata driving for a month or so....
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...28_110808.jpg?

leboeuf 01-17-2016 01:09 AM

I fell to a little "while I was in there" action. My car was crunched on the driver side corner some time before my ownership and things never quite lined up. My upper radiator mount was never connected and my hood never lined up because the bumper mount point was pushed down an inch or so.
I decided to cut some wood blocks to serve as a brace for my crow bar and got things back into place. After lining things up I shot some paint on my crunched up radiator support; now I'm ready for the car shows :fael:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X...16_150009.jpg?

I also got the cold side piping fabbed up. The upper section does a little jog to clear the radiator hose and the alternator. The 1" tube is for my baller oem bosch (kayser) bpv. The bottom section is a Flyin Miata hose.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_...16_194906.jpg?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8...16_195143.jpg?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X...16_195249.jpg?

This thing gave me trouble. It seemed simple enough to cut the flange, rotate the bend and add some tube, but man did that flange give me trouble. There was something in the casting that would explode and catch fire at random while welding it.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-l...16_224226.jpg?

This looked cooler than I thought it would without the bumper. I think one of my tow hooks got abused once or twice.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-R...16_224201.jpg?

leboeuf 01-18-2016 12:42 AM

Hot side piping is done!
Now just some tube beading, bungs to weld, ducting, and a minor tubular front bumper mount.
Maybe I'll be ready to drive once the snow melts!

I modified an sr20 outlet to be more of a 45 degree bend. Note the comical spluge of aluminum to build the bolt hole spot back up.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-h...17_161727.jpg?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-s...17_162331.jpg?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...17_162611.jpg?

I had to trim the Flyin Miata hose by cutting it in half and shortening the 45 degree (from horizontal) section... Bummer... but it fits great.

aidandj 01-18-2016 02:36 AM

Aluminum welding is looking awesome man! :bigtu:

leboeuf 01-28-2016 10:25 AM

This bumper subframe thing is almost done. I'm not ecstatic about how all of the mounts worked out but everything is pretty functional and it will serve as a solid mount for whatever ends up on the nose. I still need to mount the lip and drill everything in place.

Everything on this was tacked in place under the car...
Looks like something from star trek or teenage mutant ninja turtles:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-O...24_230624.jpg?

This corner is getting busy; the bars will also serve to hold a splash guard.

I think I'm actually done fabricating stuff.
I may actually be driving this thing next weekend.

Here's the front subframe thing off the car:

And here's the intercooler on it. It is kind of a pita but the whole unit does drop in without too much fuss:

I also finished the front ducting stuff. It's a pretty simple thing held together with rivet nuts. The oem plastic undertray integrates into everything pretty well.

Well I officially have a turbo miata!
My overall thanks to the miataturbo community. This really would not have happened without this site.
I've never owned anything fast so I don't really have much to compare this thing to. To me it feels and sounds like a rocketship. It's on a 7psi wastegate with no boost control...
There are still some projects to get some heat shielding and my airbox back in there; but at least I got the thing off the jack stands.
It will certainly be interesting on the track.

I lied about not fabricating anything else. I needed a wastegate mount.

Got a chance to take a look at the log. 145kpa with a base pressure of 80kpa is a real amount of positive pressure. I believe the section shown is in 3rd gear.
I need to look around and see if 18.5 degrees of advance is acceptable at 145kpa on a stock piston vvt motor. Otherwise looks pretty rich and safe. Also it looks as though there's a lot to be gained with some EBC.

Hey man, that subframe intercooler support is pretty clever!

Nice job.

Is the naca duct connected to a shroud for the oil cooler?

leboeuf 02-23-2016 11:16 AM

The duct is not completely shrouded and its not shrouded at all in the sense of that one dude with the crazy 3d printed setup.

It does seal off on the body on 3 sides. I will likely make something to close off the bottom when I make the splash guard.

There are some trains of thought here. I'm not that kind of engineer, but as I understand the wheel well isn't the lowest pressure exit point for the thing, so all of the air flow comes from the naca duct forcing the air through the exchanger (basically just blasts the thing). In that sweet 3d printed setup, he's exiting out the side of the bumper and relying on that suction to draw the air through the exchanger, so he needs it to be air tight.

Aaand its rather effective as is so that project has been moved down in priority...

Yea that setup was insane, but just wondering if there's space for this kind of commonly available thing

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456244645

I really need to search for a cooling setup. My oil is HOT.

leboeuf 02-23-2016 12:08 PM

Yeah there's no way something off the shelf like that would fit without modification.
The inner lip of the naca duct is 5mm or so from the oil cooler. You could absolutely fabricate your own, it would just have to enter at a steep angle.

ANY oil cooler is better than no oil cooler. I wouldn't track or turbo without one. I saw a 20 psi increase in oil pressure at the track once I put that one on.

Yea my oil gets hot just driving on the highway with a 6spd/4.10.

Im wondering if I should stick it behind the bumper like you or remove the fan by the a/C compressor and mount it behind the radiator. Whenever the fans kick on in the supermarket cross flow, the driver side always blows cold anyway.

Still, clever setup here.

I had my first track event with the turbo car annnnnnd my day ended up in a loose stacked tire wall. I get some catastrophic oversteer when getting on the gas on sweepers... Anyway I have my theories and really I'm only out $50 for another ricer lip. I've hammered out that fender before...
I think the kaaz 1.5 way that I have in there is partially to blame, I have no idea what kind of clutches are in it and need to read about setting the thing up correctly.

Also finished a heat shield that's working rather well:

Been there done that. Any pics of the wall?

leboeuf 03-07-2016 12:36 PM

Yeah unfortunately its not the first time I've touched a tire wall either...
No pics of the event, was trying to get my crap picked up and off the track to not delay too much. No real damage either, I could have kept racing if I wanted to.
I generally only push things in low consequence sections of our track (which there are few), so I hit a loose stacked wall in the middle of the desert. So it looks like I pitched tires 20 yards or so into the dirt.
My buddy said it looked pretty wild with tires flying everywhere.
And people keep asking me when I'm going to paint the car :P
I'm going to rehab the kaaz this week and set the clutches for much less engagement. I have a torsen as well that I might try out for the next event.

aidandj 03-07-2016 01:53 PM

Just saw your oil line danger pics. Good warning. My oil pickup may have a small mark in it from the drillbit....

The car is back on the road.
I got some pretty solid advice in this thread https://www.miataturbo.net/race-prep...ersteer-88071/
And decided to apply the recommendations.
The end result certainly feels much nicer on the road. I'm no longer getting kidney punched when I hit potholes.
I also pulled my diff and did the axle seals and reset the backlash. It was at 24 thousandths! Spec is 3.4-4.8 or so... Magically the rear end is much quieter now

With my new found rear travel I decided to extend my rear tophats by 1"
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1459021760

Hmmm 300 in/lbs vs 450 in/lbs...

This is really close... not sure if that scratch happened during installation...
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1459021760

I decided to just throw down the money and just buy nice install-able parts. It was kind of nice to not fabricate anything here

Also decided to paint the car.... sometime soon hah

You have to be careful extending those rear top hats. Your upper a arm could hit the frame before the shocks hit the bumpstops. We made similar mounts for the rear of my car and we couldn't extend them past certain lenght because of the a arm hitting the chassis.

I ran the measurements through a simple calculation and it came back ~450 in/lbs. If I understand it correctly, more turns makes for a longer straightened out torsion bar and drops the spring rate.

My metal supplier had some 2.5" .120" wall DOM tubing. So its actually the nicest stuff you can get for this purpose. I actually asked for just basic hot rolled crap and he hooked it up.

Indeed it does seem to be a problem with some setups. The extension is 1" and I have 80% of a bumpstop in there. I rested the car on the bumpstops without springs to take a look. There was a good amount of clearance even with me jumping on the back... (precision measurements)

Edit: I meant to ask how much you were able to extend with what length bump stop?

Chilicharger665 03-27-2016 02:50 AM

Did you not make it the event at ASR?

I checked my schedule and the only Super Lap I can make this year is June 26th.

I've been tinkering with the car and have wrapped up some small jobs:
--Oil temp sensor is in the pan and now being read by the MS
--Added the knocksense module to the ms3 board (pricey but real nice integration into TS)
--Air box
--Boost solenoid (PID loop software is... interesting...)
--pcv system catch can (sears air/oil separator)
--breather catch can (custom 2 way)

Most of these things are working well. I'm afraid to push the timing to see if I can log a knock event, but its nice to see things look quiet.
I haven't had much time with the boost solenoid. The overboost protection works. The "setup mode" works. The pid loop may have been programmed by someone without a controls background.
Why on earth is there a slider thing and who programmed the P coefficient backwards? Anyway it still overshoots with PID at 100,0,0.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1461304011

Catch can details. We'll see how this works. The idea is that it will catch oil while venting boost blowby and not suck it in while drawing in fresh air while in vacuum.
I should start by pointing out that my fluid dynamics knowledge comes from boating.
The theory is that the first plate will push the oily air onto the sidewall; the sidewall will collect oil. The second plate just makes the sidewall contact bigger. Whatever is left then gets mixed into the stainless scrubbie material
Really I had this aluminum laying around and needed to finish off an argon tank :D

Some miata updates!
My daughter was born in early June and all things car related slowed down.
I decided that now that I'm a Dad, I need to be able to build a shelter. I've always planned on building a large shop at my property, but I decided to start small and build a shed for now.

In the mountains if you want to build something, first you dig (its a touch rocky)

Just need to make doors and add trim. I only fell off the roof once while doing the shingles!
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...78bc8bc45a.jpg

Onto miata!
With the heat of the summer the car started losing an injector intermittently and the ignition wouldn't push past about 150kpa.
The injector issue was stupid... I mixed up my auto spec heat shrink tubing with my home electronics crap... So when the engine bay would get really hot, the wire wrap would turn to goo and my #4 injector would short out.
The ignition was just old. It was the original na6 setup with 230kmiles.

Anyway took a weekend away from the shed and got my snazzy new supermiata radiator installed along with a stock nb2 ignition setup that I got a good deal on from that head 18psi parted out. And most importantly I got the ac clutch replaced. hah

Somewhere along the line a hardtop appeared. I had to grind out the inside a bit to get it to fit with my roll bar...

I finally got out to the track yesterday. Going to try and figure out this youtube thing. Video on the way.

I'll just start at the fun part hah! Cold tires.. haven't been to the track since April... I just didn't stop the way I remembered.
This was my first try at getting video, its kind of washed out, but hey its a $35 camera. Also the rearview mirror is in the way; going to try a lower mount next time.

I'm still only a second faster than my best lap without the turbo... I am on bald tires so we'll see how it does next month with a new set.
There was a pro in a c6 zo6 that ran a 1:27 lap. First person I've seen get below 1:30. He said the track record is around a 1:24 in some random open wheel high hp thing.
I'm at 1:36 flat more or less.

Does anyone else host pictures through google? I used to just use the picasaweb crap but it's now gone... I hosted those last couple of posts with picasaweb's replacement and it worked at first but after a couple of days something happened with the links?
Anyway I used the new site image uploader and it appears to work. Not sure how to resize the pictures but at least they're there.

^^^^ Those tophats are rad! Maybe I'll tinker with something like that once I get my machine shop put together.
Progress has been a little slow on the car but I'm still fiddling around.

I did finish my shed :D Miata parts storage to the max.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6af454aef1.jpg

And I found what was causing the bad smell in my wife's car. :(
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d41c22c3a0.jpg

On the miata I've been tinkering with getting it painted mostly one color and adding some minor aero for track days.
I took in some advice this weekend and tried moving my seat closer and keeping my hands fixed on the wheel.
I ended up dropping over a second and ran a 1:34.8. I'm really getting thrown around in the car though, so I'll be on the hunt for seats/harnesses over the winter.

Aero! This stupid thing netted me an extra 8mph in our back straight! This was my first foray into any form of body work... bondo smells bad and 24ga metal is hard to weld onto miata mystery meat metal.

Nice!

Hopefully I can make it up to an event up there next year, if my work schedule ever works out...

I'd love to run into some forum members at the track! Are you subscribed to the sandia raceway mailing list?
The day was $50 and there were 4 total cars there. Not a bad way to spend half a Sunday!
I'll have some video up in the next few days.

Did some car things recently. Had a blast at our local track back in Feb.
This new steering wheel thing is awesome. So much more space for my knees.

This is on the wastegate (7psi)
Ran consistent low 1:34's. That's close to a 1.5s drop from my last outing... Only changed my steering wheel and lowered the boost. Still need to work on the driver.

After some ups shenanigans and my package being delivered a few miles from my house, I received my new seat! I think its going to fit...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ee...=w616-h1094-no

I'm going to use the stock sliders with heavy modification... The goal is for the seat to be on the floorpan when adjusted all the way back.
My take on this was to remove the rear hump, hammer the floorpan down and weld in a 16g steel sheet. I'm not quite done yet, but it does seem to be pretty solid.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DK...w1920-h1080-no

I reused the captive nuts from the old seat mounts.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Gz...=w616-h1094-no

The front area took a beating so I also reinforced it, this time with 20g steel.

Also some time ago I finished my rattle can job.

Hey look that's nice

I should be able to make the June 3-4 SWMS track day up there. I would love to check out your Cobra seat! That is the exact brand I have been looking at. I also want to experience a mild turbo car on track, if you will take me as a passenger. The only other turbo car I have been in is 99mx5's 300+ whp EFR powered beast, but I can't afford to do anything like that anytime soon.

I watched the most recent vid. To me, you are turning in too early on nearly every turn. You need to be trying to "clip" every corner. You seem to be trying to hug the inside curve and follow it, rather than angling it off and going straight across. Try a bit later entry than you are used to and see if that picks you up any time.

Indeed, I'll try a later apex and see how it goes.

I've finished the seat installation! As planned, the seat just barely contacts the floor when adjusted all the way back.
Now I just need to conjure up a harness bar.

The bracket ended up being a little on the complicated side. Pictures are... meh

I decided to install the metal sleeve bushings that SadFab graciously sold once upon a time for pennies.
I mean there are machined washers in the kit that I think someone (sean?) actually turned; Crazy...
Anyway that went well as their kit is awesome, but then I needed to get the car aligned... it was Friday and I was watching my kiddo, and I had planned on a track day Sunday.
So one thing led to another and I ended up here... It actually worked out great, but I discovered that on my driver side rear I cant get less than 2 degrees of camber and on my passenger front I can't get more than 2.2...
There are various plumb bobs attached to hard points on the subframe to mark the centerline of the car; these get used to build the reference string lines.
I spaced setting the ride height and can probably get to 2.5/2 f/r camber if I tinker with that.

I run -2.5 front, -2 rear camber as a dual-duty alignment. Is this mostly a track car, or do you drive it on the street a lot too?

Drilled, parted and hand chamfered 440c SS round stock. But yea its hard to get those below $250 and still make it worth our time. And actually tommy did that group buy set.

Glad you liked!
