Mazdaspeed meets EFR, ARTech, MS2E
60 Attachment(s)
I decided to come out of hiding and start a build thread. I have been looking off and on for a Miata to build since about 2009 and in May 2012 I finally found the right one and purchased my 2004 Titanium Grey Mazdaspeed Miata with 86,000 miles on it. My ultimate goal is to start road racing with the car but while still keeping it streetable.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 When I bought the car it came with a brand new Robbins Back cloth top, an OEM Hardtop without a rear defroster or headliner as well as a Hard Dog Hard Core Hardtop Roll Bar. But other than that it was stock. The same day I signed the paperwork for the Miata I had put in and order with Flyin’ Miata for the MSM intake kit w/ the O2 Mod. I also purchased the 80mm Catback exhaust from Corksport. Now I knew it was going to be overkill for what was currently done but I was thinking ahead and had always had plans of replacing the factory turbo setup with bigger and better things after my upcoming deployment in August 2012. In the mean time I bought a 2.5” Cat less EBay downpipe with the Elbow that mates to the turbine housing itself. And while I was on EBay I bought a 28”x8”x2.75” Bar and Plate intercooler since I couldn’t justify the price of the Flyin’ Miata’s Intercooler upgrade. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 I then ordered a A-pillar gauge pod for two gauges from Speedhut for an NB2 but I believe I received a pod for an NB1 I called them and explained the situation to them (this was a year ago and don’t really remember the details of the conversation) I think they said it should have been the correct part but you might need to modify it to make it fit I’m not really sure but I know I was anxious to get my new parts installed so I just used my wife’s Blow dryer as a makeshift heatgun since I didn’t own one and tried my hardest to be patient with the plastic to keep it from bubbling up . I bought an AEM UEGO wideband A/F gauge and an AEM TRU-BOOST EBC/gauge to fit the pod. I turned up the boost to about 9psi and really enjoyed driving the car for the few months I had before leaving. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 While I was gone a friend of mine who does auto body repair got a set of Factory HID’s out of I think a Nissan and installed them for me as a little gift I guess. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 Needless to say I had one project back home that kept robbing my bank account while I was deployed. I steadily bought parts throughout deployment in hopes of coming home to the parts waiting for me in the garage with the Miata. It’ll be easier to just list out what I purchased so... Both my wife and car were residing in Tampa, FL during deployment so the meet worked out to be perfect timing before we all went back to Gulfport, MS where I’m currently stationed when not deployed. I wanted to get as much done on the car as I could before the meet. I started with the short shifter kit. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 When I went to uninstall the factory shifter I noticed that the 4 bolts on the transmission right below the shifter were all terribly loose allowing the whole assembly to move around as well as allow fliud to leak out of the transmission. The install went smooth and I retorqued the loose bolts and the difference in feel was amazing (how much difference being due to a properly torqued shifter assembly vs. the kit itself I don’t know but I’m happy with it) The seat belts retracted like crap with the roll bar in and I was hoping these would help out a bit but they really didn’t do that much of anything with the exception of looking better than the factory ones. I found that the visors were useless and just seemed to get in my way so I installed some of these. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 Next was the suspension so I started working on that and knocked it out in a few hours put the 6UL’s on so I could adjust the ride height(ended up with 4.25” pinch welds all around but currently adjusted up to 4.5” all around). I also have the xida’s adjusted 2 clicks from soft. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 Unfortunately I had to wait till the following morning to get an alignment done on the car I gave the shop the specs I was looking for from 949racing under the dual purpose alignment and ended up with: FRONT LEFT CAMBER -1.8° CASTER 6.4° TOE 0.01° FRONT RIGHT CAMBER -1.8° CASTER 6.0° TOE 0.01° REAR LEFT CAMBER -1.8° TOE 0.04° REAR RIGHT CAMBER -1.9° TOE 0.03° After the alignment I took my new exhaust bits to a shop in Tampa that does ceramic coating and dropped them off while I was in town. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 When my friend home from work we started working on deleting the power steering and gutting the rack. I opted to use FM’s method and just cut out the seal and not removed the seals on the shorter piece where I’ve seen others weld the two pieces together. (Worst case scenario I take it back apart remove the seals and it weld up) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 Here is the belt number that worked for me (DAYCO 5040335) in case somebody else is looking to the same delete. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 I called all over the area to try and find a shop willing to do my R&P swap but have had no luck. Also since I was only visiting the area on leave I was a little afraid of taking it to a shop and them needing new bearings for it or something and having the car get stuck down in FL. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 Well the friend of mine that was helping me work on the Miata did a pretty good job paint matching the side skirts to the car and we installed those the next night. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 The Miatapalooza 2013 meet https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 RyanG's 2005 MSM https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 Myself https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 My gorgeous girls(my wife and my car) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 I had a good time, had a chance to meet some of the Miataturbo guys in person, see a lot of different style Miata's but enough of the rambling and back to the project. At the end of the meet there was a raffle and I won a $50.00 gift certificate to Redline Autosports in Kissimmee, FL Where I was able to pick up another factory A-pllar(regret the pod but not sure what else I want to do) Gauge hood(in case I move the gauges to here and then don’t like that either) Black radio trim(I don’t like the MSM’s fake carbon fiber trim piece that doesn’t match anything else in the car) The Ceramic coating shop called and my parts were done so I went to pick them up and can’t wait to install them once my Megasquirt 2 Enhanced arrives from Reverent. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367006936 I look forward to hearing the comments and criticism. I'll have more once the Megasquirt comes in! |
awesome build
just don't blow up your fucking motor |
Wow, BEAUTIFUL build. I love seeing all these top notch parts coming together on that excellent car. Subscribed sir.

Finally a thread to document the win!
As soviet said, don't punch a whole in your block. |

Standard wastegate is like 12psi, depending on preload. You need to separetly buy a low-boost wastegate.

Balling this hard isn't easy.
But you sir are pulling it off well. Very nice set of parts and car. Now build that motor because the EFR will make a blow hole in the side of your block |
Ryan brought Frank by and we went together to Miatapalooza. I've known Ryan for awhile but it was my first time meeting Frank. He seems like a helluva nice guy. I know he didn't divulge what he does for a living, but let me say he has his act together. I guess that is obvious from the quality of his build.
Good job on the car. I am looking forward to seeing how it does with a built motor. Good luck, sir. |
Nice build! Good to see another EFR/ARTech setup! Build the motor unless you want to repeat what happened to me. :bang:
BTW, you have a PM. |
Great build up! I'm going EFR too.
I'm stationed here at Macdill AFB and don't think I've need you drive it around base yet. Maybe when my engine gets back together we can go do some real driving. What branch are you? |

A little update on the car, I talked to Reverent and I am told that my MegaSquirt has been shipped so I'm one step closer with that
I also called Full-Race last week and ordered the low boost wastegate for the EFR along with a T25 inlet gasket but I'm not sure wheather to use the gasket... Seems like everyone runs without them. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367970399 I installed my new steering wheel last week too. However I wasn't able to get the hub to work with the clock spring installed.. :( Unfortunately I wasn't able to find this out until after I had destroyed it. And by that I mean cutting the connectors for the air bag and horn and then bending down the end for the horn. So other then not having a horn at the moment. I like the feel of the 330mm much better then the factory wheel and even with deleted power steering I really don't feel a difference in steering effort between the two. The quick release also makes for an easy swap to the Sparco 383 I plan on getting when it's ready for the track. I do however have quite a few things needing to be done in pretty much every part of the car before that will happen though. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367970399 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367970399 |
very nice!

Subscribing to your build to see the action unfold. Seems to be a culmination of the great things this forum has discovered.
You are doing it right! |
Looking good, Frank! Love that steering wheel.
I ended up getting the Forge actuator from Full Race so I can swap springs and not have to worry about cooked actuator diaphragms. |
Frank, I am in Long Beach. Let me get a ride.

You may want to look into some shops in Mobile, AL. I am from Mobile and there are some good engine builders and performance shops, there as well. F and D autocare specializes in Nissan Z's but they have done a ton of work on a local turbo Miata. Also TDC performance performs engine builds and has a really good tuner named Mike. If you are looking for just an engine builder I have a lot of friends in Mobile that have had motors built and could give u some really reputable builders to look into.
Great start on an awesome looking car. I'm looking forward to the results. |
Excellent build sir.
Will be working on my MSM soon. Subed. |
Very nice build!

Frank you should honestly just order a built motor from TSE and be done with it.

Update:
So I went home for lunch today after looking at the DHL tracking on my MegaSquirt. The tracking said it was still on hold in Jacksonville, FL but no more then 10 minutes later there was a DHL truck in front of my house! So needless to said today is a good day. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368467054 It was very securely packed and this thing looks great! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368467054 Then I made a quick trip to Radio Shack for a DB9 to USB cable. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368467054 Now I just need some time to install everything! |
Crazy build sir. Almost makes me sad to see such a nice DD turned into a track car but you're sure building everything right!!
|
Be prepared for lots of problems with that cable. You will probably have a ton of connection issues with the MS. IE you'll probably lose connection every time you go over a few thousand RPMs.

Obviously go ahead and try the one you've got, if you don't have problems awesome. But if you do, at least you know the problem. The generic USB/DB9 cables from wherever for whatever reason have a lot of issues with interference. Either they're not shielded enough or just suck.
I went through 3 different cables before I found something that worked better. Ultimetely I used a long ass DB9 cable from MS to computer and used the USB/DB9 converter that DIYAutotune offers to connect that cable to the laptop. I now don't really have much connictivity issues, but the big ass adapter coming out of the side of the laptop is kind of a stupid setup. I'd like to hear what others are using. |

I hated the adaptor from DIYautotune because it was awkward and unsupported just sticking out of the side of my laptop. It eventually broke from the weight of the adaptor just hanging off of the usb port. I got this one from radioshack:
Cables To Go Port Authority 13 USB to DB9 Serial Adapter : Adapters | RadioShack.com Works great and just acts like an extension from the cable that I got from DIYautotune. |
Wow epic build. Nice work so far. Sub'd and inspired for my MSM.
Hace you figured out the seat belt retraction issues yet? |
Looks great! I just dropped my bp to my engine builder Hux Racing... not local to you unfortunately, 5hrs drive for you. BUT - when yours is done, will I see you tracking it at Barbers or NOLA? I visit several customers down there every 6 months... Ocean Springs hospital, Biloxi Regional and GP medical center... we'll have to catch lunch some time

Mind me asking what you have in the manifold and DP? I'm thinking if mine doesn't sell soon I'm digging back into it to build up more. |

Subbed for this. What a great way to start out a build. Awesome job not skimping out on anything! props
Frank, how do you like the angled MR shifter? I am considering a stock height but curious on the angled version. |

Alright so I've had a chance to get a little work done on the car. So after I got my MS in I realized I needed a DB37 connector from DIY. I soldered in some accessories I thought I would end up using in the future if not right away. BTW white heat shrink tubing works nice for labeling wires. You just write on it before you heat it up.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370099927 I also ordered an aluminum IAT bung for my intercooler piping but I remembered that my factory intercooler piping was steel so until I'm ready to put the EFR on and redo the piping I made my own steel bung out of some bar stock I had. I drilled the hole for the sensor then cut the piece I wanted to use. Welded it to the piping and then tapped it for the sensor. Nothing fancy but it'll do until I install my new setup. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370099927 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370099927 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370099927 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370099927 I also got around to installing my Walbro 255 fuel pump. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370099927 I installed my Fuel Injector Clinic 775cc injectors but it was late last night and I didn't take any pictures because I was in a rush to get everything back together and the MS at least connected. I did get the MS connected but I haven't mounted it yet. I registered for tunerstudio and then followed Reverant's start up instructions and got the car idling last night. I'm going to try and start tuning toady hopefully. Side note: I'm contemplating selling my hardtop (no headliner no defrost) and getting one with the headliner and defrost. Mine just doesn't seem to fit right. Im not sure if there is a slight shape difference between the NA and NB tops but its annoying. I was also thinking of just taking my soft top out completely and bolting the hardtop down. The wife on the other hand is not in favor of said idea. |

I removed the FM intake kit and started my install of the Borg Warner set up. I finished fabricating the hot side intercooler piping along with all the oil and coolant lines. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1374200191 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1374200191 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1374200191 Not done yet though. I still need to install DP and fab up the intercooler pipe from the TB to the intercooler... Besides that I just need to swap the injectors and MS2 back in. I did start a little side project.. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1374200191 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1374200191 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1374200191 It's made out of 1/8" 5052 aluminum Works like a charm too! |

I received a PM asking me about how I ran my AN lines so I figured it would be good to post in here. I utilized all the factory MSM spots on the block (-6AN to 12mmx1.25 for the coolant and -4AN to 10xmm1.5 for the oil inlet) then I welded a -6AN male fitting on to the 1/4" coolant line that was also originally used for the turbo. For the oil pan I used the BEGi MSM turbo drain flange with a 3/8" NPT to -8AN fitting.

Update:
Well I finished my turbo install today and I started it up and I was about to recheck the ignition timing. The car idled for about a minute (not even a terrible idle at that) and then died. When I went to crank it back up I heard a POP and then the coolant bubbled then the motor stopped cranking. I pulled the plugs and cylinder 2 was full of oil. I've never heard of a headgasket blowing while cranking, I wonder of maybe I blew out the valve stem seals. All I know is its a lot of oil. Enough to stop the motor from turning over after cranking a few times. I was so close... :( https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1374969404 |

LOL... That is... Awesome. So much awesome the motor was like "Fuck this shit I'm out!"

Wow, I guess you can blow a motor just cranking with an EFR. LOL, jk. That really sucks though, at least you were going to build the motor anyways.

Wow, I guess you can blow a motor just cranking with an EFR. LOL, jk. That really sucks though, at least you were going to build the motor anyways.

I don't even understand.

It think it might be bad seals too. At least it's only the valve cover you gotta remove to find out.

To avoid double posting the recent events here is a link to the thread I started on my situation.
https://www.miataturbo.net/engine-pe...ranking-74142/ long story short. I'm looking at getting the motor built. |

UPDATE:
Well the motor is out and has been taken apart and I have a bent connecting rod. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1376187205 Unfortunately that was only the effect of the oil and not the cause, which at this time is still unknown. The head is being sent out to the machine shop on Monday to be checked for and cracks or other issues. The intake manifold was filled with oil when it was taken off the head but the throttle body and intercooler piping were dry so the oil had to have been sucked into the intake after the throttle body at some point I'm thinking. However the motor is in pieces and I'm still stumped! The motor will be getting a few upgrades once this all get figured out though. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1376187507 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1376187507 http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ep/null-21.jpg I noticed that the turbo manifold was a bit too close for my liking to my lower radiator hose connection on the block. I took the liberty of fixing said issue by notching the coolant outlet and changing the angle the hose connects to for a little added piece of mind. Attachment 185219 Attachment 185220 |

So my motor still isn't done yet but I'm working on designing a new oil catch can that will go on the drivers side between the clutch master cylinder and the strut tower. It will have two -10AN inlets from the valve cover, one -10AN outlet to the intake, a manual drain and a sight to check the oil level. Still waiting on the weld on bungs to come in so not done yet but I have everything tacked together and will triple check the fitment tomorrow before welding it up. Here's some pics for now.
This first picture shows the inside of the catch can. I actually ended up shortening this part by by rows of holes but I forgot to take a picture after changing it. I will also be putting course steel wool in the big side of the catch can. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380248541 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380248541 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380248541 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380248541 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380248541 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380248541 |
