Mazduh's MSM second coming...

23 Attachment(s)
I've always wanted to do a build thread but was always too lazy or didn't think I had enough shit going on to have frequent posts.

Well here it is!

As some of you guy's might know, my MSM a few months ago was hit by a deer on the passenger side and pretty much fuxored the whole side and windshield.

Got to work soon after cleaning and removing the windshield.

Insurance didn't total the car, but sent me a check for $4300 to get it fixed. With the rust on the lower rockers and pinch welds as well as other miscellaneous body damage areas etc I decided to source a clean shell to swap all the nice MSM parts over too.

Fast forward to last weekend, I sourced a mint 99 nb base for $2950 off ebay! 116k on the odo and this thing was clean! Had a local friend take a peak at it for me before I planned my 2000miles trip to pick it up. He gave it the thumbs up so I threw down a deposit and bought some plane tickets.

Flew to Vegas on Friday to pick up the new car. Seriously impressed with it. Totally worth it, I really got a deal! Drove it back across Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois with no issues what so ever. It even made it all the way up Pike's Peak and back down with no issues other than the fact at 8,000ft-15,000ft elevation it makes all of 30-50hp.

So the only things wrong with it are as follows:

Needs a new softtop.

Window motors in both doors are iffy at best, need to replace more then likely.

Paint blemish on the driver's side rear quarter... Basically it probably need a paint job. There's no dings or scratches but just wear and tear from a 16 year old car.

One tire has a slow leak.

Alignment is slightly off.

Trunk lights either don't work or just bulbs need replacing.

Ebrake needs adjustment.

When I first picked up the car it was missing the rubber bushings on the radiator brackets but I already knew this and swapped them with my MSM ones before the trip.

Otherwise the car is pristine. Seriously had not one issue with it the entire 2000 miles. I was worried for a bit it might have low compression but as soon as I got into Nebraska quickly realized the car was just down on power from either extreme heat in Nevada or elevation in Utah/Colorado. Seriously don't know how people own cars in those areas cars make no horsepower there! All the way up Pike's Peak had to keep it in 1st-2nd and really ring it our to get going. But I think we had a much easier time then the big 4000lb suv's crowding the roads to the top. Once we got back to normal-ish elevation in Nebraska suddenly the car felt like it had power. Now driving it here in Chicago it feels quite peppy and decently fast. At one point somewhere in Colorado there was a 6 1/2% decline that went on for 7 miles! We got to just put the car in neutral and coast the entire time. Reached speed of almost 95mph by just coasting.

Overall I would rate the trip 10/10 would do again. All though if we could just omit all of the state of Nebraska I'd be ok. What a boring drive.

In no real order:

Gave Project 99MSM a much needed bath today. Spent a good amount of time cleaning. Some weird funk coming off the cloth seats I had to basically use one of those carpet cleaners on. Also pretty sure the rain rails haven't been cleaned in forever. I found more gunk in there. I only noticed cause it rained and water was pooled in the back. I'm sure this car has barely seen rain in it's life.

Came out to my car this morning for work and got down my driveway before noticing the tire that was a slow leak the entire trip became a big leak and wouldn't hold any air. So I figured this was good enough time to swap my FFD 15x8's. Car sure looks goofy on stock suspension. Woulda snapped more photos with the HT on but it started downpouring.

Over this last weekend I've been fixing little odds and ends with the car. Since the MSM had a recent shifter rebuild I swapped that over to the 99 cause the boot and stuff definitively needed it.

While I was at it, I swapped the center console from the 99 one to the 05 which now means I have 2 cup holders! Yay! Also swapped the MSM radio bezel to match the cc. I also swapped the sun visors from the MSM over to the 99 because the MSM has a mirror on the driver's side which means I can do my makeup in the car.

I moved over the hardtop finally too.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440382811

Fab9 sent me a free windshield banner. Not sure if I like it yet. Love thier stuff, but their logo is meh.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440382811

Swapped over the enthuza muffler from the MSM. I was half expecting it to sound terrible. But it actually gave the car a nice growl. Very pleased with the sound.

Here we have a 2005 MSM with 105k on it. Spent it's entire life above the salt belt.

I didn't notice till the other day, but the tail lights on the 99 are different... Not sure if that means one was replaced at some point. I can't see any visible damage or fixed damage signs.

Probably will end up swapping the MSM tails over since I think they look better anyways.

I'm probably not swapping the turbo bits for some time. Year or 2 plus. I'm likely going to pull the MSM motor out and sit on it, maybe build it over time. Unless I get super antsy. But I'm really enjoying it being N/A right now. I plan to swap the Suspension bits from the MSM over the coming weekends. Stance coilovers, FM swaybars, 949 links, strut tower brace, and the MSM butter fly brace. After that the next thing will likely be installing the rollbar and an oil cooler with some gauges. I'll probably leave it in that configuration as a nice track setup for a while. Probably over the winter I'll swap the MSM rear-end since not having a LSD is lame. Oh yeah I also have a pretty much barely broken in FM happy meal with the light flywheel in the 5spd on the MSM. I'll be wanting to swap that over too.

This is so much fun because none of these parts or mods cost me any money. Just time to remove and install. It's like Christmas every weekend!

Is it worth my time at all to look into doing a header? I was also thinking about getting the 5xracing adjustable timing wheel. I realize these things will probably net me all of 10hp if that. But I think I can find a rb header or something used on the cheap. The timing wheel I hear will help a little with pickup and acceleration. I just want quick N/A response feel.

Stay tuned for updates!

newold_m 08-23-2015 11:47 PM

Nice find! A far as I know the later NB sport (incl. MSM) butterfly brace is not a direct fit on the early NB as the studs are not there for attachment.
NB2 subframe brace fits fine, less two bolts, and is an improvement over the NB1 one.

Took this shortly after putting the exhaust on. Sounds good.

Need help with this window issue. Pulled off the driver's side door panel and can't for the life of me figure out why the window won't go all the way down. It's like the motor runs out of juice. I cleaned and regreased the windows guides to no avail. I don't think it's a broken cable or anything. What do you guy's think?

stoves 08-25-2015 08:54 AM

I had a similar problem with mine. One of the cables inside the door might be stopping the window. Make sure it has a clear path and tie the loose cables out of the way.

Mazduh 08-26-2015 11:39 PM

Well I managed to fix the driver's side window. You were right in that the cables were binding the window. Some zip ties and it's fixed!

The other window on the other hand...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440646796

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440646796

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440646796

The passenger window would go down but stop. Then after playing with it, it went all the way down and didn't come back up and made some nice clicking noises. Further inspection I noticed practically all the window guides had deteriorated and then I ended up removing the window motor to notice both places where the cables go were cracked and bent.

So looks like I'm pulling the window and motor from the MSM this weekend.

Not much to update... haven't really had time to get anything done. Hoping this Saturday to attack a few things like some general maintenance and finish swapping the window assemblies etc.

I also picked this up:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441220363

I know it's purple... Gonna paint it. Maybe like a gunmetal or something. It's a bossfrog double diagonal with the bolt-in harness bar. I chose to get one of these over moving my Harddog ACE bar from the msm. The ace bar is nice, but not as aggressive as I'd like for a track car and kinda cramped when using harness's and kirkey seat back bracing. Just where the diagonals met the bar is the same spot as the welded on harness bar. So to fit 2 harness straps then the bracketing was a pita. Ontop of all that the ace bar doesn't come as far over as I'd like. The headrest of the seat isn't quite fully covered by the bar.

I'm hoping to have some more updates after this weekend.

concealer404 09-02-2015 03:23 PM

Heh i think i took damn near that same exact route home with the MSM when i bought it.

RB header or bust.

Beware, 2 years is a lot of time to make an NB1 stupid fun to the point that you might not even bother throwing the MSM motor in. :giggle: I don't miss turbo at all.

Haha... Yeah starting to feel that way already. This 99 motor is rock solid. I bought a 5xracing timing wheel for some cheap hp.

I got some time yesterday and managed to completely swap the MSM passenger door motor and guides to the 99. The new-ish bushings and guides work great!

Just for future record if anyone is curious, I've noticed a slight difference between the msm door card and the 99. Instead of having to pull up the little carpet on the inside of the handle to access the screw when removing the door card, the MSM door card has a second hole just below the handle.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441289549

The difference being the little plastic piece that the screw, screws into.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441289549

One is more angled and has the screw go directly to it. On the 99 the plastic piece sits flat and has a bracket that bolts to it, which then in-tern the screw that holds the door on, then screws into.

I meant to swap the MSM door card over to the 99 but for some reason just couldn't get it to sit perfectly flush. It was getting late and I was tired of messing with it so I just put the 99 doorcard back on and called it a night. But both windows work perfectly now. I might go back to the driver's side door on the 99 and swap the MSM window and bushings/guides over when I get some extra time.

concealer404 09-03-2015 10:19 AM

NB2 door panels are not a direct swap to NB1. Door handle sits in a different spot. The easy option since you have an MSM to cannibalize would be to move the rods from the MSM over to the NB1.

Glad you found a nice shell. I saw your posts in the facebook group IIRC. Sad to see that you decided to kill the MSM shell. But, I understand why.

Following your progress. Good luck Maduh.

curly 09-05-2015 01:46 PM

I've had three MSMs in my garage, all kill the batteries with the trunk left open. 2 01 NB2s have not done this. I think in the 03+ upgrade they changed the license plate lights to turn on when the trunk opens, I don't think 99-02 do this, so your trunk lights might not be a problem.

Also, swap your MSM cam over to the 99, that's the setup I have in my '93 right now, and it gives it a great burble on decel.

I noticed the car at idle was getting a little hott at idle and couldn't hear the fans kicking on. So I did some digging and discovered this:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441669490

Nothing some JB weld couldn't fix temporarily. I have my radiator and SPAL fan setup still on the MSM. I haven't felt like getting around to swapping that over yet. I haven't quite got to pulling parts off the MSM that would keep it from running. I still need to move it to storage at some point before winter.

I also managed to pull the HD ACE bar out of the MSM. Waiting on this guy to pick it up, but keeps flaking on me. It's for sale, asking $500 obo if you're local to Chicago and want it.

http://s30.postimg.org/gkqkds2o1/IMG...905_161803.jpg

Also, I have way to many shift knobs.

Nice find Phil.
I believe the MSM has the better brakes than the 99. I'm sure you'll be swapping them too. I don't know if the boosters and masters are the same, but it will be interesting to see what you think.

concealer404 09-08-2015 09:01 AM

Booster and master are different. Don't swap the whole setup over. Use the brackets in back for the bigger rotors, retain your 1.8 brakes. Add Wilwoods up front and a 1" master (929 or Wilwood) and win at life.

Mazduh 09-08-2015 09:33 AM

This is pretty much the plan. :giggle: I'll get around to it at some point.

I also randomly discovered the car came with an FM clutch switch. I was sitting in the car and absent-minded-ly went to start the car and forgot to depress the clutch. But the car still started. LOL Sitting there dumbfounded I pulled out my flashlight and looked below and yeah turns out the little C-clip is there. I have one on the MSM I was eventually going to swap over at some point.

So there's that... My guess is the lady's name on the title before me must have installed it for the convenience. It does seem like to me this car was well taken care of and may or may have not been sort of modded. The suspension etc for sure has never been touched. but things like the radio and sun visors etc were sort of janky, must have just been reinstalled quickly before being traded in etc. There's a few things around the engine bay that look like should have a vacuum line there but are capped. Not sure if that has to do with this being a base model and things that would be there for like cruise etc aren't or there were things there, but have been removed, then just capped off to make it passable. Car doesn't throw any codes or anything though.

So I dunno... Met up with a few other local miata guys and they all said the car sounds extremely good with the Enthuza Catback.

concealer404 09-08-2015 09:34 AM

Drop that clutch switch in the mail to me, will ya?

I've been looking into this a little more. I'm just now learning all the little tricks that can be done to squeeze a little more out of these cars. It never really was an issue to concern myself with starting out with the MSM and moving to a standalone right away.

But anyways, just to double check. If I do swap the MSM intake cam over to the 99 motor, as well as do the 5xracing timing wheel. I should still be relatively safe on the stock ecu right? I guess I could swap the AFR gauge over to the 99 just to be sure but without having a header I'd have to weld a bung on the stock header etc and I'm entirely too lazy to do all that lol.

No huge updates. But I just want to say that I spent maybe 2 hours jerking off all the weather stripping and rubber seals on the 99 with lube and am very pleased with the results.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441977885

This stuff is simply amazeballs. My hardtop seals were on their last leg and would leak at both the passenger and driver's side window. I'd always have to run out and cover the car before it rained. Super annoying especially when a hardtop is supposed to seal better. I picked up this stuff based on recommendations from here and s2000 people and holy crap did it work. I went through practically every seal and weatherstrip on the car and it gave it a nice shine and made it look like new. Most everything on the car was sun-bathed and dried out. It did the best work on the windshield rubber seal. I must have fingered and rubbed that guy for atleast 30 minutes. Looks practically new now. I wish I would have had the thought to do a before and after photo but I'm not that intelligent. You'll have to take my word for it that it's awesome.

After I was done lubing my car I put the HT back on and took it to the carwash to clean off all the excess lube that got on paint and windows. I must say this is the first time I've ever washed a miata where I didn't get atleast some water leaking through the seals. Again, seriously impressed.

Obligatory sexy shot:

That last post was pretty perverted... LOL

Anyways no real updates today, just replaced a valve cover gasket and cleaned the 99 vc. Checked the spark plugs and regapped them accordingly. Replaced some of the solid hard rubber vacuum lines and pcv gasket on the car with new ones and swapped over the MSM's 323gtx pcv valve.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442341058

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442341025

I played around with swapping the MSM vc over to the 99 but decided against it since the brackets for the coil packs on the msm don't exist on the 99 vc and I need the MSM to still kinda run for moving around to storage.

Here's some quick comparison shots, pretty similar but some differences.

Just an FYI, if you get a catalyst code on the 99, it's generally failed coils clogging your cat with fuel, and you'll need to spend ~$600 just in parts (coils and cat) to truly fix it. But, the 99 coils fail because they're miserable. A better idea would be to replace the coils with something else (COPS, GM, etc). Or even wire up the 01+ coils from the MSM, then you could use the spiffy MSM valve cover.

I've been thinking about going the fab9 route but I'm on the edge since I've been hearing the controller modules don't hold up to heat on track days.

But thanks for the heads up!

Is it worthwhile if I come up on a super cheap 01+ header to use it? Or is that just some miata.net bs I read?

Nope that's legit. Good gains over a 99. Dunno if te stock computer will give you anything though.

Totally forgot to take photos. But I finally got around to replacing the oem radiator. Swapped the mishimoto rad in from the MSM with the 13" SPAL and shroud setup I made for that car.

The NB barely gets up to 190*F now just driving around town. Before on the stock unit with one fan broken I'd see easy 200*F+.

I was slightly concerned the SPAL might suck too much power and cause some weird issues or stall the car since it took some tweaking on the MSM and ms2e to get it working right. On the 99 though it comes on fine with barely a noticeable idle droop.

I need to replace the radiator hoses, I learned the stock MSM radiator hose I recently replaced on the MSM is not identical to the one on normal NB's. I thought I could get away with just using the one off the MSM. But the NB one hangs lower and doesn't interfere with the NB intake. So woe is me...

Did a few things today. Car is starting to look like her old self again... :bigtu:

Swapped the MSM tail lights to the NB and MSM trunk.

Does anyone know if I can take the MSM's window switch that has the quickpress button that lowers the driver's side windows all the way without holding it. Put it in the 99, and have the same feature? The 99 does not have this.

I also discovered/realized the 99 doesn't come with a gaslight. Mileage is almost the same on the clusters, do you guy's think if I swap the MSM cluster into the 99 the gas light will function? Or is there more too it than that?

Yes but it's pinned backwards. Repin the connector.

That rollbar I picked up a while ago that was powdercoated an ugly purple. I roughed it up a little bit and painted it silver.

Picked up GM Silver, the photo doesn't do it justice. Also painted the harness bar.

I wanna give a member on the m-s.com forums, Hox, a big thank you for hooking me up with a free used pair of Garagestar door bushings. Installed them 5 minutes after opening the mail. The doors are definitely harder to close now, it took some adjusting to get them to sit perfect. But it's actually not bad that I need to slam the door now, it's not like my gf will mind since she's always slamming the door on the miata anyways. ;D

Initial impressions are positive. Like I mentioned, the doors are definitely harder to close now. I have to close the door pretty hard, but I haven't noticed what other's have said about it causing the door to misalign a little with the car. Looks and seals fine. When the car goes over bumps now, it might be placebo, but it feels more solid. Not really sure how to describe it, just has a more solid feel to the car. I wouldn't say it's as dramatic as when I installed FM rails on the MSM. But these definitely are helping something on the 99. The doors don't have any play anymore when closed. Not that I think they did before, but with the door closed it just feels strong. I dunno, take that for what it's worth lol.

I'll take, what is the quickest way to ruin a C7 Corvette for $500 Trebek.

Made some progress over the long weekend. Got the suspension pulled off the MSM and swapped over to the 99. Process went extremely well and I got most of it done in 3-4 hours. The plan is to put the stock nb suspension back on the MSM chassis so I can still move it around when needed. But I'll get to that another weekend.

Seriously impressed with this car every time I work on it. The stock suspension came off the 99 so easily, i barely had to use my impact gun. I only had trouble with one of the upper strut nuts in the truck, I almost managed to round off the edges but managed to get the bolt loose before having real trouble. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't succeed, that's quite a difficult place to get any tools to do anything.

Not sure if this is normal or not, but I never adjusted or touched the height adjustment of the coilovers when they were on the MSM. I just moved them over. But when everything was said and done and i lowered the 99 off the jackstands. It sat practically 4x4 compared to the MSM. I had to lower the coilovers a whole inch to get the car to sit at the height that I wanted. I didn't think there would be that drastic of a difference but I guess I was wrong.

Right now the front is about a quarter in too low for my taste and the rear is about a quarter inch too high. I'll adjust accordingly when I get some time. I usually run a 12" height in front from wheel center to fender and a 12.25" height in rear.

Went to Kalamazoo MI to visit some friends this weekend.

Bossfrog sent me a care package for my rollbar. Since the previous hardware that came with the bar was all rusted and corroded to shit I decided new coat of paint and new hardware was in order.

I'm trying to decide if I want to try and install the bar before the car goes in storage next month or wait till spring.

When swapping shocks, you really need to let them "settle" a few days. I've swapped 5 MX5 shocks now and they all got progressively lower over the next few days. Now I wouldn't spend too much time "dicking around" with ride height after the installation, I'd wait a couple of days after driving the car a bit and set the ride height then.

Mazduh 10-14-2015 09:09 AM

Even when they're used shocks? I thought that really only applied when they were new.

Chiburbian 10-14-2015 12:08 PM

When you put them in did you torque down your a-arms when they had a load on them? Otherwise, your bushings are acting as springs themselves.

Mazduh 10-14-2015 12:57 PM

Well yeah. I used a jack to load up the lower control arm and then tightened things up. But even then so, that shouldn't effect the actual height of the car if you're measuring from the wheel hub to the fender edge.

Meh, regardless, I just readjusted the coilovers and it's fine now. I honestly believe something on the chassis might have been tweaked or bent on the MSM since I always had trouble having the same height on each side of the car. Even on completely flat ground I always had to balance the passenger side about a quarter inch difference from the driver's side to sit at an equal measurement without me in the car.

Mazduh 10-16-2015 09:39 AM

So I've decided to sell off the turbo setup from the MSM. I just sold my ms2e in 6 hours of posting it on facebook to another MSM owner. The turbo setup I have a local buddy interested so he'll likely be picking it up off me.

That funds me $2100 to source a new turbo setup for the 99. I'm keeping the MSM motor to sit on a stand in my garage for a while and slowly build it over time. So that goes on the backburner for now.

I can probably throw another couple hundred dollars out of pocket into the money pool so let's say I have a $2500 budget to source a manifold, turbo, downpipe for the 99. I can build the oil/water lines myself and figure out an intake and intercooler pipe setup later. I already have a mismatch of ic piping and intake piping from other projects laying around, or I might just have my buddy make me something down the road. But for right now, the priority will be sourcing a nice turbo/mani/dp over the winter.

What do you guy's recommend? I realize a $2500 budget isn't enough for an efr setup, plus I think that's sort of overkill. My goal is to build a reliable 220-230hp setup on the stock motor for now that later on I could crank up to 250-260hp on a built motor. I'm not looking to make 300+ hp. It will be a street driven car with probably around 6-7 track days a season and some autox weekend toy.

The FMII setup looks to be the most reliable and tried and true setup, but I'm willing to look at other options or sit around and find something used for a deal. I'm thinking a Garret 2560r will be more than enough for my needs.

I've got my eye on the MKturbo stuff, but I'm not sure about how to buy since I believe it's just a group buy atm. I'd prefer to be able to put in an order and have stuff ship soon. I shot a pm over to shuiend with some questions.

Thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

shuiend 10-16-2015 10:26 AM

I sent you a response. I honestly think going with a TSE setup will be the best long term for you since you want to track the car.

2manyhobyz 10-16-2015 10:50 AM

Phil, tell us about the 16G that was on there. Pros/cons. I thought spool up was supposed to be pretty good. I was thinking about turbos off Volvos, Saabs, something that is known for fast spool but has a larger displacement motor to offset the fact it will need to spool around 18-20 psi max. Maybe the Ecoboost turbo from a 2.3ltr mustang. We have an opportunity to think a little outside the box for quick spool and mid-range torque.

Mazduh 10-16-2015 11:01 AM

I could post more information on it if the BNR website wasn't under construction atm and I don't have any info on hand. I don't really have any spool data or anything on hand. I really have no idea how well this turbo works since I only had it on the MSM for 2 weeks before the crash. I never got a chance to run more then wastegate pressure or even get to a dyno. From what I understand it's kind of a unicorn turbo because I've not seen anyone else run it yet, besides the bigger evoIII 16g BNR offers.

I've decided to sell it since I figure I can find a better flowing manifold and downpipe setup. Those both would be the choke points of this setup. Though I do believe I could easily reach my goals with this setup, I just want to opt for a cleaner configuration then sticking with the OEM MSM stuff.

I have had the idea to get a custom manifold and downpipe made for this turbo that matches the stock MSM IHI flange, but then I'd be paying out of pocket vs. recycling this setup to afford something else.

Mazduh 10-19-2015 10:01 AM

I totally forgot last time the MSM was running I had all water in the radiator with zero coolant. It's getting colder here and dipping down to almost zero at night. So I slapped a few things together to get it to idle so I can add a bottle of coolant to the radiator and circulate it through the motor before the freeze.

While I did so I played around with the slowmo feature on my new phone. I dunno thought it would be cooler then it really is.

Sadly this will probably be the last time this motor runs before coming out of the car and sitting in the back corner of my garage for some time.

Mazduh 10-22-2015 12:16 PM

I'm not posting it here since I'd rather sell local then ship everything. But the complete turbo setup off my MSM from the manifold/turbo/downpipe to intake etc is for sale Asking $1500 firm. Just PM me for more info, I'm mostly just posting it around facebook.
