Say "shock pocket" ten times fast.
|
Say "shock pocket" with the "Hoooot Pocket!" jingle.
And then try not hearing it the next time you read "shock pocket." |
This project is too simple, you need to go AWD.

Final fitting of rear subframe holder has been completed. Pads for subframe mounting points are flat and parallel within a 1/16" of the planned dimension. It's ready to weld in place.

Got the parts cut and formed for the rest of the transmission tunnel.
Drilled and used cleco clamps to hold the formed tunnel piece to the floor. Clecos are wonderful temporary fixtures to hold parts while drilling. You drill a hole and then use a pair of plier-like things to depress a spring which retracts the jaws, stick the cleco into the hole, release the pliers and the spring forces out the jaws so the draw the two pieces together tightly and align them. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1334893178 After that I cut away the part of the floor in the tunnel. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1334893178 Finally I cut two pieces to fill in the space between the new tunnel and the original Miata subframe section. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1334893178 I need to remove the paint from the weld areas and can weld the parts in place. Boring I know, but it's what I did today. |
This is making me happy! cant wait to see more.

So love this build.

Started installing new frame rails today. I had to cut the old ones out when I cut the Miata pan to fit into the SAAB.
Both ends look like this. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1350101644 New frame rails constructed from 2" square tubing with 1" angle iron flanges welded onto it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1350101644 Frame rails will be bolted into place first, then welded in once everything is drawn up tight into position. Need to make a hardware run tomorrow for proper bolts and fender washers but everything is pulling into place nicely. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1350101644 |
I had totally forgotten about this project.
And now you've re-whetted my appetite! |

Totally awesome build. My dad used to road-rally in the 70s. Came up against a few of the old Saabs. He always talked about them. Maybe I can find one of his old Super8 films with a 96 in it.
They were not known for handling, but they were supposedly near indestructible. Many a small tree in northern Europe found its' live ended by Saab 96 bumpers and fenders. |
Hooray! This thread lives again!

Picked up a sweet pan/box brake this week in Branson, MO. Not sure what brand it is (it's not marked) but it's very high quality and appears be domestic production. All surface ground fingers, high quality castings. It's at least 400 lbs. Heck, the eccentric shaft is 2" in diameter. Anyway, it appears to be new/old stock. A bit of surface rust but doesn't appear to have ever been used. Got it for $500 but it looks like at least a $1500 unit. Going to be really nice for all of the little panels that I need to bend up to finish boxing in the welded-in sections of Miata unibody.

First update in a while as I've been working on rust repair for the last few weeks. Even though I spent 100 hours or so on it, it wasn't comment or photo-worthy. I got to work on some fun stuff finally. Got the roll bar in. I had to wait on adding the harness bar to the hoop/diagonal until the seats were in so that I knew how high to place it. That will go in tomorrow.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1357535894 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1357535894 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1357535894 Got the seats in. I had to raise the seats from stock Miata height by 6" so I spent a lot of time figuring out that one. That and I had to move them inboard from the stock locations to clear the B pillar. Someone who owns a SAAB 96 said that he didn't know how they would fit with the tunnel in there. Well, they do and he didn't anticipate the power of someone who is building something essentially from scratch. Each was moved 3" inboard but because the bottom of the seat is flush with the top of the tunnel it worked. Sounds like the shifter location would be funky but your hand falls to the shifter even better than the stock location. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1357535894 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1357535894 |
Progress will be slowing a bit. Decided to work on my welding skilz a bit so I'm taking a night class for TIG and MIG at the local community college a couple nights a week so I lose those shop nights. It just timed out that it started Monday, it's winter so I'm not losing "outdoor" time and I have always meant to do it.
I'm just self-taught and have been globbing metal together for over 20 years and decided that it's time to unlearn some bad habits and perfect my technique. I am pretty much done with mods to the tub. I'm going to install the engine, trans, diff, controls, column, MC/ clutch and pedals just to make sure everything fits this weekend. Then I need to cut up three PPFs to stretch one and measure for a new longer driveshaft. |

Two guys stopped out today so we installed the drivetrain.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1358037592 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1358037592 Plenty of room to V-mount the radiator and intercooler. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1358037592 We threw some old wheels on and set it down on the ground for the first time in a year. The fenders were zip-tied on just to see how much work they will need. The fronts won't be bad at all. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1358037592 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1358037592 The rears will need some pretty good flares. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1358037592 Still lots of work to do. |
Damn I'm liking this. Can't wait to see more.

I'm expecting an evil laugh befitting a super-villain to come from you when you finish this.

this is one of the coolest build i have seen! In for more progress!

Getting the pedals and steering column mounted up and the heater/blower motor. Had to make all new brackets and position the steering wheel quite a bit higher than stock. Everything still turns smooth.

Now that I have the seat mounted - thigh portion of the Sprints is a full 12" off the floor - and the wheel in, it's like sitting in a Ranger or S-10 pickup. Strangely enough, the shifter location feels better dropping a hand down to it now than conventional Miata placement.

Modified one of my extra PPF's to accommodate the 10" longer wheelbase. As it's aluminum so I got to try out my new skilz from welding class. I cut up a spare to graft in a section and then cut four flanges to gusset the top and bottom.

Got a bit more done. Finished the radiator install and welded in sheet metal to seal off the lower radiator. I forgot how thick the automatic radiators are compared to the stock 5 speed radiators. At least twice as thick. I thought it was more but not that much. I'm going to try it first and if I need more cooling I'll change it.
Intercooler, turbo and flanges to fabricate new turbo manifold are ordered. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359607809 Started on the dash fabrication. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359607809 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359607809 |

Got my manifold, turbo and downpipe flanges ordered from Wiertech. Also got my stainless weld-els there as well. They are only $4.15 each. They are Schedule 10 instead of 40 but will be plenty thick and easier to form and cut.
Going to do the bottom mount modified log this go-around. |

Built shroud to completely seal radiator and intercooler. It's sealed up tight. I still need to get some panel nuts to screw the top down. That way I can get at everything by just unbolting the top plate.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359871291 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359871291 Intercooler installed. I wanted to V-mount it but it didn't work out. Even so, as tight as this shroud is to the grille I don't see any cooling problems and the over the radiator routing of charge pipes is a clear shot to turbo and throttle body. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359871291 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359871291 |
you're not done with the entire car? lets put a little effort into this...

Spent 10 hours in the shop today but it doesn't look like it. Lots of tedious things done. Finished making brackets that run the length of the front of the dash and welded them to the dash, drilled and tapped holes in the SAAB so the dash is mounted with eight bolts. I can pull the dash in two minutes. Not in pics but welded up endcaps to finish off the ends of the dash. Still need to do two side panels that go down by your legs to hide the heater box. Also installed factory gauge cluster.

 Just kidding. I understand and it's really the position I should also take. But I won't. :burncash:  |
While this is an extensive project, labor-wise, the intent was to be a budget swap. It has crept up but I'm trying to keep it to a minimum.
What I don't want to happen is what happened with the V8 Miata. It was going to be a track car but it got too many niceties, perfect paint, etc and got too expensive to risk. This will be cheap enough that if it gets damaged I'll be sad but not devastated. |

Spent the day on the SAAB. Pulled motor/trans, pressed out old bushings, installed Energy Suspension polyurethanes and started on flaring the fenders.
I have no idea why the photos turned out so dark. Anyway... Stock front fender https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1362973481 Sectioned, flared and re-welded. There is a ton of work yet to do but it's roughed out. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1362973481 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1362973481 |

It's dark because your camera was adjusting to the light shine spots and compensating. try doing your pre-photo-snap auto-focus/light-meter half-button-press (and other hyphenated fun) on the darker areas instead of on the fender. it should meter you a brighter exposure.
Remember, digital cameras are limited to a finite number of grays and unless you override defaults, they will strive to keep everything within that limited dynamic range. A good rule of thumb that your camera obviously knows is "it's better to lighten a dark photo than to darken a light one" and its corollary of "overexposure of white areas is lost information". if your camera doesn't adjust by itself, you can use the exposure compensation and tweak the epoxure. it usually looks like a +/- or eV or something. examples: photo taken of bright screen. my phone meters on the center of the image, not the focus area. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1363010377 photo taken of mostly keyboard. note that the screen is blown out and super bright, but the keyboard is more visible: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1363010377 You can sometimes change the weighting of the exposure but not always. it's usually easier to obtain focus/exposure lock on the specific area you want and then hold the shutter half way to hold those values and move the camera to point at the whole area you are photographing. TMI, baby. |
