https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1387829266 I did spend several hours on bodywork last night. Will be hitting it hard over the next week in between holiday stuff. I have a couple days off that I had to burn by year end. Still plan on it going to paint by March. |

Put in several hours the last couple of days in between Christmas stuff. Got several parts through 80 grit and a very light coat of poof-can primer to close it up. Working on rear fenders now, then a bit of touch-up work needed on doors. They are both 80% done. Should be ready to prime and start dealing with the little imperfections in a week or two. Going to have to get some professional help then. I've gone as far as my non-existent skills have taken me. This is the first time I've ever done any sort of bodywork.

Um, looking like a EPIC first bodywork attempt.

Looks pretty damn good to me, experienced or not.

I was thinking the same thing.

ditto. Great job man. Keep it going

Got the rear fenders done. As they were the most hacked up they were the most work. Again, a very light coat of primer just to seal them up. They still need work. It becomes obvious with the primer guide coat. Just have the rear valence and passenger part behind the door and the two doors to finish. All are close. Should easily finish roughing them out by New Years day.

More done tonight.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388208181 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388208181 Started on the worst door. I've been told that blocking something that size is very difficult. I took that as a challenge. I wish I had a longer long board. Mine's only about 15". https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388208181 |
A couple of tips:
Let the sandpaper do the work. You shouldn't have to force it, or bear down on it. If you find yourself having to press down, either change the sandpaper or move to a coarser grit. Sandpaper is cheap compared to your time. If it's getting clogged up, you're going too fast or the primer isn't completely dry/cured. Chances are, you're pushing too hard. Once again, coarser grit. |
I have been using 80 grit 3M gold premium paper. What I have been doing was hit it to find the high spots, work those a bit with the DA with 80, then back to the board, rinse and repeat. I do change paper often and have never seen any clogging issues.
I have been having plenty time to cure. I would just rotate spots or parts, working around 5 areas or so in rotation. That's getting tougher to do because I'm actually running out of areas needing work! There is a light at the end of this tunnel and I can see it. |

Smoothed the firewall tonight.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388292876 Got one door done. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388292876 Only one door left and it's close to being done - maybe an hour or two left on it. Then I need to start doing some touch-up on all of the parts of the car. I will have everything done that I can do by 1/1/14. |

Bear in mind that I'm just putting a light coat of primer over the finished parts so it looks blotchy. At $20 a poof can for automotive self-etching primer I'm going to wait until I can spray it with a gun to get full coverage. It's too expensive to do it this way.

Santa and his Volvo obviously had the intended effect of getting this Saab back on track.
I'm pleased to see this, Mr. Stein. Not pleased enough - at this point - to overcome the disappointment of the loss of the truck. |
Nothing photo-worthy but I logged 5 hours yesterday and 12 today just filling pinholes and scratches, build priming and sanding to 320 grit. Got one door and three fenders completely done and put away. I have all day tomorrow in the shop so I should be done with major components. I don't have a firm date for paint yet. Waiting on the painter's schedule. Tentatively the last weekend of January.
|
Confirmed today that the car goes for paint on 1/24 so I have a hard deadline!
|
What color?

Looking awesome -- can't wait to see it finished!

Debating on doing the white stripe like the second one above. Even thought about the "lower door" skinny-wide-skinny stripe like on Mustangs etc. Probably hold off for now, if they do go on they will be in vinyl anyway.
And thanks for the last one. Reminded me that I have to dig out that little piece of nose trim for paint. Getting all of the small bits sanded, primed and packed up now so I don't forget anything. I wonder what he has for a motor in the last one. The hood pins caught me off guard as the hood tips forward but then saw the hood scoop. |
And no, I haven't been slacking. Put in a solid 40 hours in the last five days. Just nothing to take pictures of. Sanding, painting, filling, repeating.

Hood, trunk, one door, fabricated dash and two rear fenders are "done" done. Final sanding with 320, no scratches or pinholes. Will do remaining door and two fronts tomorrow.

Not much to report this weekend. Went to a farm sale and they had a pallet full of 25-30 quilted moving blankets which I purchased for $25. Will be nice for wrapping all of the parts for the four hour journey to the paint shop.
|
Loaded everything into my truck and enclosed trailer last night. Leaving for KC at noon today. Should have it prepped and sealed tonight and painted and cleared tomorrow.
Decided on going with matte finish black for the whole interior and the dash. Miata carpet and stock SAAB door panels and rear panels are going back in after spraying them with black vinyl and fabric paint. The car is still going to be Grabber Blue. On the exterior I am going to paint the grille, door handles, trunk handle and latches black as well as blacking out the rockers. I'm thinking of now doing a black stripe on the center of the hood and possibly a narrow/wide/narrow stripe on the lower section of the door. Might need to break up all of that blue. I'll wait on the stripes and put them on with vinyl later if needed. Should have lots of pics Sunday night. |
^ Exciting!

Oh sooo nice! Keep up the good work, I really enjoy this build thread! Props!

It just occurred to me and had to check. I got it painted a week shy of two years since I started. I estimate 600 hours into is thus far. I should be able to finish it in less than 200 hours.
I'll be out of town this week but first order of business is to get it back in the shop onto jackstands again, get the motor in and lay out the wiring harness on the floor so I can see where I need to start drilling holes for the harness to pass through the inner fenders to the motor. As the Miata inner fenders are outside of the SAAB inner fenders it will allow the harness to lay in its stock location but still be tucked. I'm installing the entire Miata harness in its entirety as it should drop right in and I'm not willing to invest the time to strip out the harness to remove airbag wiring, etc. I could probably strip out 15 lbs if I did, but I want the wiring to be as painless as possible as I hate doing it so the whole thing is being dropped in as removed. I'll have to do some actual wiring for the head/tail lights to interface with the SAAB parts but other than that it should be plug and play. I'm hoping that there is enough wiring in the harness that is in the back half of the car to the fuel pump, tail lights, etc to accommodate the wheelbase stretch without having to splice into it. Next is fabricating the turbo manifold for a WRX TD04 turbo and modifying a Flyin' Miata full 2.5" exhaust to fit. The front half and rear half will be retained as complete as possible and just join them in the middle as the wheelbase has been stretched. I'll have to rework the downpipe to fit the TD04. I have to do the same thing with the fuel/return/brake lines. All of the bends will fit as stock as the front and rear subframes and subframe mounting locations are intact. Just need to splice in about 10" underneath where there is a straight run along the frame rails. That's kind of it for the big stuff. Of course there are a bunch of little things that in and of themselves aren't big jobs but they add up. |
Looks great! lookin' forward to seeing the rest.
|
Awesome.

Awesome progress. Love the shade it appears in the inside pics. Can't wait to see this bad boy progress even more.

Stein for pres.

Interested in seeing this completed, need HD video of big smokey burnouts once its all broken in.

Starting to get it back together. Brakes and fuel back in. Harness is routed. All harness wires will be concealed behind the original SAAB inner fenders except for a couple of little places where it will have to poke through. Makes for a nice wire tuck.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391491670 Also built a coolant reroute spacer. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391491670 |

Working on wiring. I hate it. So I stopped.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391748430 Finished the coolant reroute. Tapped the oil pan for turbo drain. No reason to not reinstall it and start hooking things up. Passenger side is tight but enough room to fit everything. Plenty of room for the turbo on the driver's side. Going with a TD04 from a WRX. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391748430 |
God, I love this project! Props given.

These guys will be racing this car in the 100 Acre Wood in MO pretty soon. (If any of you remember forum member "modernbeat", that's his car).
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392041921 The Rally America event, Rally in the 100 Acre Wood is coming up in a few weeks. If you are anywhere St Louis you should come out and see rally stars and chumps competing in this event. Billed as "real cars, real roads" it is one of the best rallys in the US. |

Turbo manifold and downpipe fabricated. Well, the downpipe is just tacked. Ran out of argon for my TIG.
