MSM, ARTech, Reverant, MOAR BOOST!

so, this will pretty much be my first thread that i am starting. this is my second miata. its a 2004 mazdaspeed miata. my first one was a 99 that i planned on boosting but i ended up trading it in for my current miata.

but who cares about that shit.
i have some goals for this car. and i have the $ to make it happen now. so here it goes. my END goal is 350whp. granted i dont plan on making that kind of power any time soon. my goal by december is around 250.

I am going with an ARTech manifold, downpipe, and 3" exhaust. abe seems like he has his shit together.

I want to get a GT2871r but i cant find a used one for sale yet. i guess im either going to have to keep look or decide on something a little smaller. I want the GT2871r because i wont have to replace it once i build the motor. if i go with something smaller i will have to replace it once i build the motor to make the power i want.

I am going with a Reverant MS2 unit and i believe some FIC 650cc injectors, recommended my rev. so i figure if he loves them, and hes building the brain for them..........i should probably just listen to him. plus hes greek, and so am i.

i already have a big intercooler, cold air intake, and hks ssqv bov. the stock intercooler, obviously is just...well, dumb. its got aftermarket 15 in wheels which is awesome because the stock msm wheels are also dumb. it has an aftermarket adjustable suspension. im not sure on the brand yet but once i start exploring i plan on cleaning everything up and making notes of exactly whats on the car.

as far as i know, everything else on the car is stock.

i have only had this car about 3 months and its already got some bad luck tied to it. ive been hit by two drunk people and ive already gotten pulled over. so in the three months ive had the car, its probably been in the shop being repaired a solid 5 weeks of the 12 weeks ive had it. this is my DD and i will be updating this very often. I am a senior in college and for one of my classes i have to set a goal and achieve that goal by the end of the semester. my goal = my car. so i HAVE to finish it if i want to graduate. :)

for my class i have to take pictures to document, so this thread will have quite a few pics also. Im at work now but i get off in about an hour and when i get home i am going to update with pics.

viperormiata 09-24-2012 10:56 PM

greek

soviet 09-25-2012 12:26 AM

so.. the quesiton is, do greeks outside greece also make insane power on everything they touch?

wowmiata 09-25-2012 12:33 AM

that is the general idea.

in for 600whp dyno

wowmiata 10-09-2012 03:42 PM

ok so I have put my order in with Abe and also with Rev. Now the only three major things I need to deal with include injectors, clutch, and the actual turbo. I like the idea of the gt2871r but its proving to be a relatively hard turbo to find used. Ive checked zilvia and I have not found one yet. It needs to be a t2 flange and i want to make anywhere from 250 - 300 whp. Ive looked into a gt2556 but that seems even harder to find. But I am not sure where to look...

As for the clutch, im probably going FM stage 1. ive read a little bit about it and nobody has anything but great things to say about it. so i figure ill give it a try.

Ryan_G 10-09-2012 03:51 PM

When are you planning on building the engine? If your end goal is 350 rwhp you should get the FM stage 2 clutch so you do not have to replace it later. I daily that clutch on my MSM and it is fine.

viperormiata 10-09-2012 06:04 PM

A gt2560 would be perfect for a 250-300whp goal.

Once you decide on a turbo, make a WTB thread and I'm sure you'll find one.

Do not get impatient and lower yourself to a chinaturbo.

wowmiata 10-09-2012 06:17 PM

i dont have any real plans to actually build the engine, i just want it as an option if i get bored and have some extra cash. and i would still think that the stage 1 clutch would work for up to around 325ish.

wowmiata 10-10-2012 01:33 PM

Ask and you shall receive. 18psi is selling me his garrett gt2876r. So that’s the turbo ill be running with Abe’s manifold, downpipe, and exhaust and with Rev’s ms2 units, with FIC 650cc injectors. So it seems to be all coming together.

so i had an off day from work and school which is rare, so i took the opportunity and worked on my car a little.

i washed the car, then i cleaned and polished my headlights, cleaned and painted my intercooler piping, stripped and repainted my intercooler, (last time i was impatient and rushed the entire process, turned out badly. so took this chance to redo it), and some other little things. Also last week, i installed the aux mod so i have an aux port now with the stock radio. :) great addition for a DD!

here are a few pictures of the evening.

this shows my state of the art paint studio haha

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1349890386
this is after i painted the intercooler and piping.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1349890386
this is what i used to clean my headlights, and it worked pretty well actually. id always been skeptic about those foams balls that attach to drills, but it was on sale so i figured id give it a try.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1349890386
this is how it looks now with the black piping.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1349890386
and this is what it looked like the next morning. bumper-less

so now its pretty much just a waiting game. ive ordered all the parts and now its just a matter of time before they get here and i can start having some fun. i plan on getting this thing on a dyno sometime after i get this setup running, but 1 idk where the closest dyno is. i think its over an hour away and 2. what kind of numbers do you think i can expect? again Im running stock internals, so i have to do some more research on the limits of the stock internals. from what i have briefly read, they are good to around 240whp? does that sound about right?

anyways, once this setup is going...im going to need some new tires. i hate the tires that are on the car now. they are falkin ziex 512 205/50/15 and they kinda suck. their traction on dry, clean, debris free asphalt is decent but if there is any kind of moisture on the road, they have almost no grip at all. its almost dangerous how bad they are. ill probably end up trying to get som 6uls 15x8 and throw some 225's on the back. (and front).

i just keep telling myself, after this, the car will be done......

Ryan_G 10-10-2012 01:38 PM

The stock internals fail due to torque not hp. The general rule is 250lb/tq, however, this is not a magic number so they may take more or less depending on the particular motor.

Your setup is fully capable of reaching 350 whp so you will be very limited with the internals which is why I am not even going to bother upgrading my turbo and mani until I build my engine because I would rather not be tempted to turn up the boost and find the limits of the engine.

Car looks to be coming along nicely. keep it up!

wowmiata 10-10-2012 06:32 PM

ok so with that info, what kind of boost pressures do you think will be safe for me to run? i remember reading a thread of sav's that had a very similar build but he had a build motor. so with my motor being stock, this setup would be around 10psi, safely, on the stock motor?
and you think the 650cc injectors would be good all the way up to 350whp?? jw. i dont plan on buying new ones after these, so whatever is the weakest part of this setup will just be the limiting factor of my system. whether it be the motor (which will be the first limiting factor) or if it turns out to be the manifold not flowing enough once im running 325 to the wheels on a built motor.

Ryan_G 10-10-2012 06:55 PM

I could not place a psi number on it as every engine is different and doing so would be irresponsible. I would suggest starting to tune it 8psi limit and after a good street tune take it to a dyno and see where you are at that level. If you are below 250wtq then you can up the boost on the dyno to whatever limit you are comfortable with. I really do not think 650cc injectors will take you all the way to 350rwhp. I think they would probably max out at around 320rwhp.

wowmiata 10-10-2012 08:52 PM

i was thinking the same thing about the injectors. as for the psi level, i agree. ill probably start off with something modest like 6psi just to be extra safe because i cant afford to have something major break. like i said this is my DD. i need it in order to get to work and school etc.

so basically that is great advice. ill get a good street tune on 6 or 7 psi and then tune it more when i get it on a dyno.

wowmiata 10-16-2012 03:46 PM

well, as of today I have changed the plan for this set up to be EWG. I am getting a TiAl ewg from 18psi as well. And Abe is making my dump tube and making the manifold set up for it.

concealer404 10-16-2012 04:00 PM

Any particular reason why 650cc injectors won't take him to 350whp?

Ryan_G 10-16-2012 04:08 PM

Unless I am doing something wrong in the calculation you use to pick the right injector size you should need just about 700cc injectors to reach 380bhp or roughly 350whp

concealer404 10-16-2012 04:21 PM

That seems ridiculously conservative to me, but maybe i'm just too newb for this. I have seen quite a few Escort GTs over 300whp with RX7 460s, though. And my Miata did 245whp with 550s with an enormous amount of headroom.

However, i will say that i've never seen an enthusiast group before with so many cars running 1000cc injectors for 300whp or less.

wowmiata 10-18-2012 09:42 PM

turbo shipped today. ewg shipped today. not sure when the ecu is going to ship or when the manifold, dp, and exhaust will ship.
still need to order the injectors.

but, while i have this downtown, whats some stuff that i can do while i wait that will make the entire install go easier? im taking care of maintenance issues but ive pretty much done it all as of now. replaced all the old cracking vacuum lines. tranny fluid. rear diff fluid. turret fluid. coolant flush. oil change. etc...

what are some productive things i can do while i wait??

wowmiata 10-25-2012 03:30 PM

they must have been throwing it around while it was shipping. all the packing had kinda fallen apart. haha
as of now, everything is ordered. and now im looking into the fm clutch and new wheels and tires.

then on to the brakes.

this is my biggest concern to this point. i just noticed this on the turbo. does anyone thing its going to be an issue? i was so busy when it first came in i didnt even pay attention to it until i mocked up the build last night. you can see how that cylinder is kinda chipped off but the core looks like its mostly intact...any suggestions??

concealer404 12-28-2012 01:04 PM

I'm not seeing anything damaged, is there something we should be seeing?

18psi 12-28-2012 01:30 PM

That's how the balance it. Nothing wrong with it.

Those ARtech parts look NAIIICE:drool:

I wish Abe would come poop beautiful stainless logs in my living room. What size FICs did you end up with?

So much win in this thread :bigtu:

wowmiata 12-28-2012 02:53 PM

650cc for the fics.

and abe did amazing work. his welds are beautiful. i am so sad that nobody will really even see that once its on the car...i wanna show off his work.

and thank god on the turbo. it was late last night when i saw it and i overreacted. haha

as of now, the entire exhaust is stripped off the car. going to do the clutch today while the exhaust is out of the way so there will be a little more room.
get the clutch in today, start on the megasquirt tonight (only the install), then get injectors in hopefully tonight, and from there it should be all fun stuff.

any tips to make the clutch easier? other than using lots of extensions and joints...?

EO2K 12-28-2012 03:01 PM

An assistant, or a transmission jack. You can benchpress it into place but getting it lined up can sometimes be a pain. I also <3 my FM clutch.

Drain your trans before you remove it, ask me how I learned that one

Braineack 12-28-2012 03:10 PM

tranny jacks are awesome.

clutch jobs are easy with a tag team partner to perform the tranny press maneuver with.

EO2K 12-28-2012 03:32 PM

Yes Brainy, we all know how you and y8s like to tag team a tranny :giggle:

18psi 12-28-2012 03:32 PM

and the sawzall slam

Miater 12-28-2012 04:45 PM

There are tranny tail plugs that make pulling out a bit easier. Reach around and just plop it in. (tried to be dirty) Keeps the fluid from just squirting out and running down your arm or leg, depending on your position in the tranny tag team scenario. If you wanna dump that fluid for weight savings go ahead, no one is looking.

transmission is out. clutch is out. flywheel is out. but when i was taking the flywheel out, in the middle of the six bolt patter there was a bunch of what looked like bb's. i assume it was some bearing that is brokeen but 1, i didnt feel anything abnormal while driving...i didnt even know it was broken...and 2 idk what it is. ideas?

18psi 12-31-2012 12:21 AM

Pics?

wowmiata 12-31-2012 12:23 AM

they all fell out, and i continued taking out the flywheel after i noticed. didnt get a pic. ill go take a pic of what it looks like now.

18psi 12-31-2012 12:25 AM

sounds like the pilot bearing shattered. Normally that wouldn't really affect how the car drives/feels, but is very bad for the engine/trans because the input shaft could have wobbled around like crazy without the bearing. Just my thought

Is the little bearing inside the flywheel intact?

I guess pics will tell

the pilot bearing is missing. This reassures my previous post

wowmiata 12-31-2012 12:44 AM

also whats the easiest way to wire the innovate 02 sensor? is it easiest to come up through the hole for the shifter? or should i go around the top of the tranny and up behind the block or something. and can i just cut out the old 02 sensors?? since im replacing with the megasquirt, the wb02 is the only 02 sensor ill need??

18psi 12-31-2012 12:46 AM

Up to you. I'd choose the easiest route. Which is the 1st one you listed

wowmiata 12-31-2012 12:49 AM

ok i was thinking that would be the easiest route. and ive seen other people use that route as well.

wowmiata 12-31-2012 01:37 AM

ever since i got my car i have had a slight grind or so it feels going into 3rd gear. now it has gotten worse and it 'grinds' a bit going into 1st, 3rd, and 5th, but 3rd the worst and most often. it happens most in higher rpms. i have read that this is a common problem with the msm and it is most likely the syncro. i replaced the fuild in the transmission about 2 months ago and it was the same. its gotten worse actually.

i have read that the grind could be something in the shifter too. i read that someone replaced the bottom bushing on the shifter and that eliminated all 'grinding' is the bottom bushing on the shifter that bottom white(ish) plastic piece? (i dont think this would help my situation at all, because if the bottom bushing is what i think it is, mine isnt broken at all. but on my last miata this had to be replaced. it just made the shifter feel really loose when it was in gear)

also, being a noob and not knowing anything about transmissions really, are worn out syncros able to be repaired or is it easier to buy a new transmission. my car has a two year warranty on the transmission...would that be something i could finagle my way of being covered by the warranty and get a new transmission fo free?

curly 12-31-2012 03:52 AM

It should be covered by warrenty, but that warrenty probably only covers 100% stock cars. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to find any and every way to void the warrenty.

I'd look into rebuilding it. A used MSM 6 spd is about 6-800 dollars, and that's roughly what a rebuild might cost, so at that point you wouldn't have to search around and you'd have a rebuild unit instead of an unkown used unit.

EO2K 12-31-2012 12:30 PM

Doubtful it would be a "new" transmission. They would probably just buy a rebuilt one from somewhere IF you could get them to replace it. Curly is right though, they would probably LOL about honoring the warranty on a modified car.

But lets go back a bit further: what fluid are you using in this box?

wowmiata 12-31-2012 05:39 PM

royal purple is whats in it now. looking to use something else soon.

Braineack 12-31-2012 06:00 PM

Probably be fine now since you'll fix that bearing

wowmiata 12-31-2012 06:05 PM

oil and coolant lines/fittings

ok so im getting a little irritated. where can i get fittings for the oil feed from the block and coolant feed from the block? i love the idea of the banjo bolt but i obviously cant use the factory hard lines.

then what is an easy solution to the oil drain on the msm? the oil drain on the stock turbo was a two bolt flange. do i have to follow where that two bolt drain goes and eliminate it from there?

i have the coolant lines taken care of, as soon as i get the coolant feed fitting from the block. but i still dont have any oil fittings other than the ones in the turbo. i went into town today and 3 different shops told me they couldnt help me out. i figured an oil fitting would be pretty easy to find but i was wrong. and i couldnt get my lines made today because i didnt have the fitting :crx:

wowmiata 12-31-2012 06:17 PM

and to go back to the warranty thing, i bought the car used and got a 2 year warranty from the bank. they dont know whether the car was stock or not. o.O

Can you pick up a cheap NB sump? I'm using a normal NB sump with an MSM engine:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1357014521

This also eliminates the catch can drain thing on the other side which probably won't be used.

Mobius 01-01-2013 02:16 AM

Run the LC-1 cable up through the shifter hole. You can stuff the unit itself in the console, there's lots of room on the sides and behind the airbag switch.

Looks great.

wowmiata 01-03-2013 11:51 PM

transmission bracket??

2 Attachment(s)
resurfaced the flywheel and putting everything in place with the new clutch. bolted the transmission back in place. but there is a little piece of metal, a bracket looking thing, that i cannot figure out where it came from. any ideas??

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1357275103

this is it. i know it has to do with those two really long bolts but i cannot figure it out...took the transmission out three days ago, those were the last two bolts i undid and as soon as they came out the tranny did too, so i didnt pay much attention to how it was assembled.

slmhofy 01-03-2013 11:56 PM

It goes between the bolt heads of those two long bolts and that bottom edge of the PPF. The bolts at the front with the tranny.

wowmiata 01-04-2013 12:02 AM

what do you mean? does it go between the bolt head and the bracket that the bolt goes through?
