I just recently finished a turbo setup on my 1990 track/autocross toy that has been a long time in the making. I trolled this forum for quite some time before I began purchasing parts and I learned a lot from everyone on here and just wanted to say thank you to all those who have helped me. Specifically Reverant, ARTech, TurboTim, and Savington.

I wouldn't have been able to complete this setup without the advice and knowledge on this forum.

I'll start with the basics of my setup.

That's most of what I can think of off the top of my head. Once again thanks to everyone who has helped me out I really appreciate it.

I had the car dyno tuned once it was completed and I reached my goal of 200hp at 10psi almost exactly. Final numbers were 200hp/175ft-lbs at 9.7psi. I'm very happy with the car it is a blast and now I just need to re-learn how to drive it since I have effectively doubled the hp and tq.

I will start migrating pics off of my phone and into this thread. Here are some pics during manifold fabrication.

Why did you decide to go with the oddball GT2854 and not, say, a proven GT2554?

I can't find anything wrong with the build.

Reverant 09-04-2012 02:58 AM

Nice to know everything went well!

Funny story actually, well not really. I had a GT2554r at one point and sold it, because I wanted to run a Tial V-Band housing. So I special ordered this turbo with a Tial V-Band housing from a distributor. If I had done my homework I would have realized that this has a different trim turbine wheel than the 2860etc. so the v-band housing isn't compatible. I wasn't able to return the items so I just decided to stick with this turbo. I was afraid it might spool too slowly, but I'm happy with it.

I also converted to sequential fuel and spark. Here are some photos showing some more fab work.

Nice setup, looks like you are one of the few that appreciates (and can afford) quality parts.

Seems kinda overdone for such low power, but that's not a bad thing. You can always freshen up the motor with some forged parts and turn it up later anyways.

Thank you and yes I have a spare motor in my garage, which I will most likely rebuild this winter. For now I'm happy with 200hp, but as most people suggest that probably won't last long.

Here's some photos when I pulled the motor to install the new clutch and flywheel. Also took this time to drill the oil pan for the return and added some heat shielding so my feet wouldn't burn up on track. I noticed my feet getting hot sometimes under na power.

I certainly thought about it, the only thing that stopped me was that I actually have two spare 1.6L engines. My thought was if I blow one up, I can just plug in the next one and keep going. We will see what the future holds, I could always pick up a 1.8L, buy an absurdflow manifold and redo the downpipe. Anything is possible.

Do it once twice, do it right!

Funny, but it seems to be a good plan. I still haven't decided if I want to turbo my stock motor or wait until I build a motor.

That's why it was an attempt at do it one do it right. I tried to take my time and plan everything out, but even then there are still things I wish I would have done differently. If I were to redo it again today, I would have a Borg Warner EFR turbo.

thenuge26 09-04-2012 09:18 AM

Hey, sweet, I didn't even notice you are from Indy. I plan on going with the "home town turbo" (EFR 6758) but first I need a garage to build the motor in.

been there, done that a few times.

the 1.6L just plain sucks. Even if you build it, it'll always suck.

Scrappy Jack 09-04-2012 09:36 AM

Very nice attempt to synthesize everything from this board. Your parts list looks like a lot of people's wish lists, I'm sure.

Please swap in a 1.8L with comparable turbo parts, then decide to start a new project and sell me this car for $0.50 on the dollar. :)

I would have to agree.

3rdCarMX5 09-06-2012 12:17 AM

What was the result of all the heat shielding? Any change?
