Sounds like a good plan. But I have to ask, with such a strong engine you're building, why shoot for only 250?

redturbomiata 07-07-2013 10:16 PM

Nice, in before allofit

I'd like to keep breaking things to a minimum. 250 is well documented, and will be easy to get without much effort.

hornetball 07-07-2013 10:53 PM

Are you getting boost creep (or was Kotomile getting boost creep) with the BEGI downpipe and 3" exhaust on the Greddy? Considering the same downpipe but have seen that some have had issues with the SG downpipe when using an IWG.

FRT_Fun 07-07-2013 11:02 PM

You'd have to ask him. I can tell you once it gets here, but who knows. The ETA was July 2nd lol... so much for that.

Not sure if this is relevant but I'm using an Artech 2.5" SG downpipe on my Greddy set up with absolutely no boost creep with a 3" exhaust. Stock wastegate actuator, though it seems to be holding up significantly better than most Greddy wastegates I hear about. Holds 10 psi all the way to redline with the wastegate sourced post-IC. It did creep quite considerably though with just the Artech DP with no exhaust.

That's consistent with what I've read elsewhere. The ARTECH SG supposedly isn't as long as the BEGI SG. In one thread I saw someone claim that they fixed creep on a BEGI downpipe by shortening the SG section. Can't remember if that was a Greddy though.

Anyway, my take-away is that there are no issues with the ARTECH design (assuming you run an exhaust, LOL). Hopefully, FRT will get his car and answer for the BEGI design. I'll also PM Kotomile (assuming he's still on here now that he's a gentrified NSX driver).

I want to get either the ARTECH or BEGI, but prefer mild steel so leaning towards BEGI.

Sorry for the threadjack -- back to regularly scheduled programming . . . .

kotomile 07-08-2013 08:24 AM

No issue with the garage pic lol, it's messy and I know it.

No creep. Some spike initially, but not terrible. Adds character. It's running a Garrett (FM1) WGA instead of the party favor that comes with the Greddy.

It's actually not a bad thing that you're ditching the Greddy. It's a pain and a half to take on and off of the manifold, and the design of the return pipe almost guarantees that you have to replace the top section of the return hose every 6 months or so. I've worked out a lot of its kinks but it'll never be perfect with a Greddy. :)

FRT_Fun 07-08-2013 09:15 AM

I honestly thought about just getting a 1.8 mani fabbed up for the greddy and using it on the 1.8. But it's hard to justify that :/

I really haven't given much thought to what I'd replace the greddy with yet though. I'm not trying to run "all of it" but I'd like to have boost hit early and hard.

haha glad you don't mind me posting that :D I love that pic, look at it every morning for at least 5 minutes. I think that is the perfect representation of what a lot of miata garages look like.

MicaCeli 07-08-2013 09:44 AM

That is a nice looking car. Good luck with it.

hahah nice koto!

kotomile 07-08-2013 03:52 PM

I should mention, 250 is only 10 more hp than it's making now. Would probably have a lot more meat to the powerband with the larger displacement and lower CR though.

Yea that is the plan. I think that I can increase the power just about everywhere. 250 is just a goal, if I happen to make a lot more, I won't cry at night :D

hornetball 07-08-2013 04:43 PM

That garage looks perfect for a turbo Miata. Not so much for an NSX. Where's the shiny floor and Gray Poupon?

Braineack 07-08-2013 04:55 PM

 title change.

Grey Poupon, lol.

I'll do tiles in the next garage when I move in February back out Californee-way. Not worth it to lay down epoxy in temporary houses. :)

Fireindc 07-08-2013 05:57 PM

LOL, the title change cracked me up. Good one mods.

I'm subscribed for driving impressions of koto's car.

Also, koto how do you like your NSX vs the old miata? the miata @ 240whp HAD to be faster.. right?

Actually, love the NSX. Great video on YouTube with Senna wringing one out.

Maybe we should change the thread title again to "Koto's NSX."

Fireindc 07-08-2013 07:50 PM

Also, FRT: didn't you have a mr2 spyder for a while? I've always had a thing for those, I was wondering what you thought of it and why you got rid of it (if you did) for a miata.

did it ever get boooooosted?

Yes I did have one. I loved it. I think overall I liked it better than the miata, except for a few small things. First, there was literally NO trunk space. I didn't have the frunk plastic so besides the small area behind the seat there was no storage. Also there really isn't a good community for those cars. There are just too few of them. Also if you think a hard top for a maita is expensive try getting one for an MR2 (think $2800). I never turbo'd mine.

I still miss driving that car a lot. If I ever make a lot of money one day I will own about 10 cars under 10k instead of one 100k car.

FRT_Fun 07-09-2013 04:15 PM

Car is now "In Transit" so at least it's leaving NC.

hornetball 07-09-2013 05:05 PM

BTW, I've never had a car successfully transported without some rash. Make sure you really check it over when you get it. Personally, I would have flown out and driven it back. Would have been less time, probably less cost and damage, and you would have gotten a nice road trip with it!

Fireindc 07-09-2013 05:06 PM

My buddy had a car (miata) shipped from Chicago to Houston with no rash at all. The car ended up having a dying motor (different issue alltogether), but no "rash" or noticeable damage to the car.

YMMV. Good luck!

Unfortunately I'm going to school full time over the summer so driving wasn't an option. Although if I would have waited until between summer and fall session I would have had a window to do it. At this point that seems like the better option. But they told me ETA was the 2nd of july back in May so I figured eh why not it'll cost the same between gas and a plane ticket, plus I get it a month earlier. Plus it's what, like 2k miles from NC to AZ... that is a lot in Sprint Vs and a stiff suspension.

And trust me I will be going over the car pretty well. I should have had koto put a SUPER conservative tune on it prior haha.

Fireindc 07-09-2013 06:01 PM

Meh, your building a motor. Leave the tune that's on it and flog on that bitch.. assuming it doesn't knock or anything and has good afrs.

Those are some of the reasons I was okay with spending more money with a company that used an enclosed transporter and came recommended by some buddies. I think it took 4 days from Oregon to Florida and the car was as-promised.

Good luck on the new acquisition.

Well the company I went with I've heard from a few people that they were good. I think it's just luck of the draw unless you spend the big bucks to get guaranteed dates. But that was A LOT more. Way more than I was willing to spend. Didn't make sense to spend 50% of the cars value on shipping.

I'm not really to worried about damage, just don't like it sitting in some shipping yard for 4 weeks.

Much faster in a straight line, plus it had the turbo to shove you back into your seat in the mid range. NSX lacks that raw speed, but makes up for it in other areas, I really can't complain.

I haven't changed man, I just bought my dream car since I could finally afford to (bonus money).

And no stereo. :D

I actually drove that car from DLI to Florida and up to NC (with a several-month stop in Texas on the way). Then from Bragg to TX and back again for BNCOC... when the daily Civic I bought blew its engine. Ironic...

Well.. it was tuned on 93 by Jerry at DIY. He tuned the spark table to 247 and then took out 7hp worth of timing to arrive at 240. And then, after the dyno session I put the WI fuse back in. I think even with 91 you should be perfectly fine with some distilled water in the reservoir. Or you could pull some out of the spark table to be doubly sure.

My post-dyno .msq is floating around here somewhere, but beware loading my old .msqs.. they aren't all done with the COPs on, so double-check those dwell settings!

I was more joking that the shipping company probably figured out how much fun it is to drive and they are taking it to a few auto-x weekends before shipping it. lol.

kotomile 07-10-2013 11:45 AM

Ah. That's definitely one scenario, lol. Although with the heat they probably want to spend as little time in it as possible right now. :)

hornetball 07-10-2013 11:56 AM

Dude, what's your timing on the swap? If it's relatively soon, I'm interested in the downpipe, exhaust, etc. I've still got the friggin' Greddy downpipe!

Well it will either happen when the 1.6L blows it's load. Which I'm hoping it doesn't ever as I'd like the 1.6L to be alive when I pull it. And there seems to be some good buffer in the tune to keep it safe.

Or when I have ALL the parts to swap and the engine is built. Earliest I see this happening is Spring 2014.

krissetsfire 07-11-2013 12:59 AM

sorry i'm late to the party but from research and now my own experience can say that the begi sg downsy pipe suffers from not enough space from the internal wastegate to the wastegate gas dump. basically the wastegate arm/washer opens into the dump section and in turn blocks the wastegate dump. I fixed the creep issue by welding a second flange against theirs. the only real problem this generated from me is my inconel screws weren't long enough and I had to use studs not as good.

hope that's helpful. Since I added that spacer in i've had no creep.

From what I remember the 1st gens up to 94 or 95 had issues with them cracking or seperating the frame rails form the body. Its all aluminum. They fixed the issue with bracing and so on on the later models.

Braineack 07-11-2013 12:55 PM

Is this a trick question? Joe labeled everything excellently.

Braineack 07-11-2013 01:18 PM

okay. I just made myself a Wall of Parts and I deloused deboxed everything so I could tell what I actually have on a whim.

FRT_Fun 07-11-2013 01:24 PM

I keep that information in my head.

Braineack 07-11-2013 01:25 PM

I forget my own name at times, this is not an acceptable method for me.

FRT_Fun 07-11-2013 01:26 PM

Just send the parts to me and I'll tell you what you have.

MicaCeli 07-12-2013 10:04 AM

I find parts in my garage all the time. Just the other day I found a VLSD with 100k on it. It's like Xmas everytime I go out there.

FRT_Fun 07-12-2013 10:35 AM

I actually just found out I have a 99TB that was still in the package from when I bought it from someone on here. Also found a 1.8 intake manifold sitting in a tub yesterday while looking for my battery charger lol. It's always fun finding parts.

I already started off on the wrong foot by being an idiot. I tried to lower the GC sleeves with just one side of the car up. It literally took me an hour before I realized why nothing would budge. It's a bit rough on cold start but I took a spin around the townhouse area and it sounds amazing.

kotomile 07-13-2013 03:54 PM

Yeah, I never could get cold start quite right with the MS. It always starts, just sometimes needs to be goosed a little before it'll fire.

I lol'd a bit at the email chain that was waiting for me. :)

I can confirm this now. Almost too good actually. Like good enough where I don't know if I want to build and swap in a 1.8 anymore. My main goal for this car is for it to have close to zero down time. The last two turbo miatas I had they spent more time in the garage in parts than running.

Either way I'm going to drive it like it is until something major happens. Either maintenance related, or something lets loose.
