One of the last NB's getting boosted

Greetings from Israel
I own a late 2004-built nb which came with the crappy H7 headlight design.
The car is with me for 4.5 years now and for the last year I run a megasquirt 3 basic from Rev with some n/a bolt ons.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460317983

A friend's FM2 build blew my mind and you can't go back sitting in your car afterwards without thinking about boosting it.
So a year later after that initial ride and here I am.
After much thinking I decided to go with the sr20 T25 that a lot of you guys here are using.
I'm more for mid range torque and usable power than top end.
The T25 flange will give room for a future upgrade to a 2560 if the power bug hits :)
Parts list of what I already have:
sr20 T25
FM piping kit
cxracing intercooler
FlowForce EV14 610cc injectors

Didn't want to spend 350$ on the fm intercooler, as good as it must be.
I measured my friend's fm2 cooler and came about the cxracing miata 19.5" intercooler to match the piping.

Few more bits and pieces like nxs boost controller and Abe's water lines

Checked for fitment but my ghetto begi reroute must go, rear thermostat reroute is in my plans

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460317983

Still to buy:
FM stage 1 clutch
FM's NB diy turbo kit (mani/elbow/dp)
sadly won't be many diy in this thread as I'm the kind of guy who pays money for getting work done on his car :bang:
Updates to come.

Bought the FM clutch.
Still to buy is the diy turbo kit, gotta wait for the next paycheck.

eBay turbo flanges arrived

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460983001

As well as cx intercooler, oem rad hose, EGR block-off from TSE, aluminum adapter for the intake and the bosch bypass valve

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460983001

Also ordered 1.375" joiner and a 1.375">1" reducer from silicone intakes for the bov in order for it to fit the FM intake pipe.

I am going into more details in my blog if you would like to check it out -

Good stuff. Looks like you've done some nice research and are making some wise decisions. It's amazing how a little power really transforms these cars.

Thanks! :)

I was able to score a once in a lifetime deal on an nb diy turbo kit from FM and stage 8 locking nuts with FM inconel studs for just 640$ shipped!
Sometimes the 8-hour time difference between us works in my favor.
The ad was posted mid day and I pm'd and got the sale in 30 minutes time :noes:
Thanks Reed!

I also bought the MAC boost solenoid after realizing the nxs boost controller is not what I want in my build.
Anyone interested in a brand new nxs controller for cheap? :)
Also ordered Centric premium rear rotors and Stoptech rear street pads
I now ordered anything I need for the project, and waiting for some parts to arrive including the fm clutch.

Sporting a Mazdaspeed spoiler off of turbofan's part out
And I need to do something about that ugly exhaust. Anyone with a spare speed laying around?

I checked out the blog, I'm super curious to see more on that custom IC piping...

its not custom. its flyin miata

This.
It should be pretty straightforward.
Today I got 99% of the parts I need :)

My silicone intakes adapters are a win. I hope the bosch bypass will be durable enough to hold 12-14 psi.

Yup, and the locking hardware.
It was exactly what I wanted and I was there to grab it quick. Rarely this happens I admit.

Car will be going in the shop after coming back from the Hungarian Grand Prix :)

Kinda wanted to put the car in the shop while I'm at vacation, but the guy is also on a holiday at the exact dates so a litte delay.

The hungaroring is beautiful but the race itself was just so-so. Still the event was great all around. Some nice moments in gp2 and porsche super cup.
And finally the car will get in the shop Tuesday next week!

Excuse my girly moment

yossi126 08-02-2016 10:45 AM

Sadly there was a miscommunication with my mechanic.
Turns out he is on vacation this week.
So I had a free day today and got fm's pinky in and had the flywheel renewed at another guy's shop.
I hope finally to get the car in next week.
I already got me some electric bike for dirt cheap for the time the car is in the shop :)

Wow, It feels like I gained 10 hp back. The car responds just as a miata should. The transition between the gears is lightning fast.
Moral of the story is Exedy clutches suck! :)

Did you cut out circles in your headlight cover?

99mx5 08-16-2016 01:20 AM

Ditch those water line fittings and get proper AN barb fittings. Those will break and leave you stranded. The outside one is already bent at the collar.

Not sure what you mean. It's a european car, maybe that's why something looks different?

It's an Artech piece, should be proven good I guess.

yossi126 08-19-2016 12:36 PM

It's alive!
Been a hell of a day yesterday.
We did some misc stuff like finishing up the oil lines, wiring for the boost controller and wideband.
After all said and done I went out feeling stoked and bewsted.
Problem is my engine bay sounded too quiet and the car overheated faster than the turbo's spool up.
Found out my main fan connector pins got broken sometime during the installation and silly me forgot to let the car operate at idle to check for thermostat and fans operation.

So, obviously I found myself stuck in the biggest traffic jam in the country (no, really) during rush hour creeping up to 228f.
At this point my laptop's battery died and I had no monitoring.
I was able to exit in the first opportunity I had, let the car cool down for a while and actually found a nicer way home without too much traffic.
Using Rev's base map, the car is super lean for now and I'm trying to stay out of boost.
Gonna try autotune later on in a couple of hours.
Main fan ordered from Autolink mx5.
Reroute and timing parts in the mail.
Revent muffler in a couple of weeks time.
Will clean up the engine bay after all said and done.
Exciting times! :)

Tried Scott's base map. Feels way better.

Currently 5-6ish psi but soo much fun! wot stabilised at around 10.5-11.5 afr.
My first turbo victim was a BRZ :)

yossi126 10-08-2016 03:30 PM

muffler from REVENT/sturovo is ready after three months or so. Still waiting for it to get shipped.
Turns out the Bosch diverter valve I ordered is a fake chinese 25$ unit, and it failed on me in just two months.
What you guys think? Should I go for an oem one? Amazon has a dealer which states oem for 49.11$
I fell in love with its sound and the fact that it is actually a valve and it opens up according to pressure and not full blown jdm yo in ya face style all the time.

https://www.amazon.com/OE-Supplier-0...rds=06A145710P

Or just get a Turbosmart Kompact for 120$ and it will bolt on to my FM piping..

Advice appreciated.

yossi126 10-25-2016 01:41 PM

I managed to score a used oem bosch from my mechanic for cheap so that sorted that point out.
Unnoticed a speed bump the other day and flew over it pulling in 2nd gear. Felt it VERY good, broke my pipe before the muffler.
I am straight piped for now and kinda like it to be honest :)

Bad news is Revent's post office rejected the package for some reason and he wanted to use express which is twice the price, at which point I sadly asked him to cancel the order.
I'm waiting for an exhaust for too long now...
I was able to score a used 22" box from Amazon for half the price, and I'll let my mechanic do the piping and brackets. So hoping for good this time.

Savington 10-25-2016 02:16 PM

Those aluminum water fittings are going to crack and leave you stranded. Replace them ASAP. ARtech or not, that's the wrong way to do water lines.

yossi126 11-08-2016 10:26 AM

This happened yesterday, finally!
12576 magnaflow for 70$ used off Amazon, such a deal.
Very happy with the outcome. It's quiet and throaty when stepping on it. No highway drone. I owe it to this community for the recommendation.
Now I can play with boost control and see what this little t25 can do.

yossi126 11-20-2016 06:38 AM

Did a three hour session with a buddy of mine with his det cans setup. We were mostly pulling timing everywhere lol.
I managed 14 psi @ 3300 rpm with open loop boost control for now. We didn't have much time at that point so we only did a few pulls. Still needs to smooth it out and then try my luck with CL. The car feels strong and pulls hard in the midrange.
I think dyno now will happen just to see what the car makes.
Certainly looking forward to it.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e98e95065e.jpg

yossi126 11-27-2016 02:59 PM

Don't know why I thought virtual dyno costs money.. Anyways.. This is a 4th gear pull on a 4.1 6-speed.
Pretty inline with what the car feels like. I have no idea why it shows 414 lb ft, but when holding the cursor on the torque graph it shows 234. And by now VEAL fixed the afr. This was early boost control run.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ee9cede826.jpg

And this is the ignition I came up with. Obviously there is some finishing touches, as in seeing if I need high midrange at the 200 kpa. at least I know for sure it doesn't ping/knock there.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...9ad6896fa4.jpg

And some night time shots with my Nexus 5X. I am still amazed with this phone's camera.

yossi126 12-19-2016 08:44 AM

Did my first autocross event in 2.5 years, missed that a lot.
Being that Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth, as I was getting down hill the boost started overshooting like crazy. Good thing I had my laptop with me.
Reduced the boost by 1-2 psi and I was good to go.
Lots of BMW's and VW variants (Seat Cupra, GTIs, Audi's)
There was the new Civic type R which got the quickest time of the day, killer car.
Most importantly the car never broke down, didn't have any issues apart from an obvious overheating at the last sessions, and I was able to do the 200 mile round trip without any issues at all. I seriously need some coilovers though, but that will happen later in 2017 once I recover from the turbo expenses.
Just a handful:

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c63249003c.jpg

And my last session of the day, was my best in terms of pace but I missed a turn:

yossi126 01-26-2017 05:40 PM

Finally dyno'ed it
Put on a brave heart and did it by myself from the get go. Feeling proud :)
Next plans for the car would be a set of coilovers as I'm with the sad, dying stock suspension. But it will only happen coming end of the year.
Copied over from dynos section:

stock 1.8 vvt unopened with 95k miles
Squaretop
sr20 T25 @ 14 psi peak
FM diy kit, piping kit
2.5" magnaflow
ff640 injectors
Basic MS3 by Rev
Made 235 ish hp @ the hubs, 217 lb-ft 5th gear 1:1

Overall Pretty happy with the results. Exactly what's expected from other dyno sheets I have seen with this turbo.
Kinda bummed I couldn't add more timing. Had a pull with 245 whp just to see what can be done but it knocked. We have a shitty fuel in our country.
What was very interesting to see is in the second plot with the boost graph, more boost did not translate to more power in the midrange.

Well that sucks... Bought a Mishimoto five years ago not knowing any better...
Gotta give a hats off to their customer service for their lifetime warranty, but shipping a new one and adding taxes on that made it not so tempting to get an ebay grade radiator for what is now a turbo car.
The Crossflow from 949 was on my drooling list for a while and the circumstances let me order it sooner than I thought, so that is what I did.
Will update after installation.

While on a 5-speed you would be correct, on the 6-speed 5th is the direct drive.

It's this one.
CXRacing Universal Front Mount Turbo Intercooler FMIC 19.5"x6"x2.5" For Miata

As for your questions, honestly it starts to worrying me. I was seeing today as high as 140° at a 90° day just doing errands in the city.
Non summer months it's usually in the 100 range and would climb to 130~ at redline non stop pulls.
I have two options I think about. One is a vibrant 12800 core. Pricey for me - shipping and taxes.
The other option is to attach a 5" spal to it. Any thoughts about that? Would it extract unnecessary heat to the radiator? Would it do anything above a certain speed?
I would get my thoughts on the cooling system thread if I can't get answers here.

yossi126 06-09-2017 07:45 AM

P.S I'll have a comparison with the 60$ 27" eBay IC when a buddy of mine installs his in the upcoming month.
Should be interesting.

Hats off to the 949 crew for a super fast and fair priced shipping overseas.
will update in a few days after installation.

This bad boy is so pretty, I need to wash my engine bay now. Friggin' middle east sand..

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...76361d0f76.jpg

Exciting times here as we have our very first proper track after 70 years.
And the honor of crashing first goes to:

Next update will probably be after the track day end of next month. I already bought oem shock bushings from FM in preparation for the coilovers I'll buy by the end of the year, haven't decided which yet. Also thinking about redoing the control arms' bushings. We'll see.

yossi126 07-30-2017 06:52 AM

Track day was fun. Went well without major issues apart from a slight overheating. We arrived there very early as this time of the year you can't drive there past 10:00 o'clock due to heat. They hooked us all Miata guys to the same group and it was great fun comparing to other guys' setups. One car that impressed me the most was a new black ND with well tuned Ohlins that gave me a run for my money in the slower parts of the track.
That thing was dancing on the track while I was holding for dear life for some hope of grip (Still on stock coilovers remind you).
I was hitting 224f at the last lap of the fourth session in what was a fairly hot day (85f ambient at that point).
For me this indicates that the 949 crossflow is an amazing piece of kit for a couple of reasons. One being I don't have any ducting at this point and no hood vents. Car is AC equipped and running stock fans.
2nd reason is my friend with a hyper-v koyo and FM-like spal setup was overheating to the same point one session earlier than me. Although he was running two more pounds of boost than me (10 vs 12), I know he doesn't push as hard as me.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...fe57fad3c2.jpg

All in time for a track day this Saturday.
Also bought a set of R_Theory hood vents from the group buy.

yossi126 12-05-2017 03:16 PM

Track day was just so-so. A friend with an fm2 blew his engine up and that made me anxious about mine and the fun went out with it. Turned the boost down to wg pressure after that.
Coliovers worked great but I need to get better tires as they overheated and I was all over the place. I am also a bit too much heavy on the gas pedal, needs more patience at the tighter sections.

Engine still overheated to 108c even though there was a peak of just 22c by the time I left. Let's see if the R_Theory vents will help.

That's a good question really, dunno to be honest.

Just got the R_Theory hood vents.
Can't decide between painting it black or leave it unpainted. Last thing I need is drawing attention because the black can stand out.

I'm thinking of painting mine silver, bronze, or the same color as the car.

Hankook RS-3's fitted (No RS-4's in this poor country) along with new front oem discs and pads. Wanted to try Porterfield but couldn't pass a deal a Mazda dealer had.
Not quite ready for track season yet as the engine overheats and I suspect my thermostat is stuck closed. Ordered the 180 stant everyone is using.
Still no balls to cut the hood.

Seems like a failed CSF rad cap. First one was bent in shipping, this one wouldn't seal well and allowed air in.
Burped the system with the Lisle funnel, swapped to a no name 1.1 cap I had laying around and all was well.

Finally had the balls to cut the hood, albeit without the center vent (Which is important I know). Now I can't stand the turbo whistles with the top down. Thinking about doing the center vent and just get another hood and hook up this one for trackdays.

Yesterday at the track had a few hiccups. After the first session my gas pedal stuck open. Turns out my throttle cable was jammed. Some 5w-30 and a lot of pumping it was loose and ok.
I was lucky this didn't happen on track. Missed a session or two.
After my second run my heater return hose let out in a dramatic fashion, oddly enough this happened again between sessions and while the engine wasn't running. 2nd time lucky.
Blocked off the heater core and used up everybody's drinking water

I will extend my turbo heat shield as far as I can, also ordered some begi heat sleeves which supposedly are rated for 2000f.
Overall I was pretty happy with how the car felt on track with the RS3's. Felt some overheating of the tires during my 3rd run.
Hit 221f on that run while 72f ambient.
I can see a slight improvement on temps but don't have a good indication as I missed some running.

Ordered amsoil mtg for the trans, energy bushings front and rear, motor mounts and some misc goodies

Melted throttle cable, melted speedometer cable, baked heater hoses, melted dipstick handle dripping molten plastic into the engine oil (causing oil pump relief to stick and destroy the engine), melted brake reservoir, cooked left front brake line, cooked CAS (NA8), etc. have all been seen here. Shield everything in direct line of sight of the manifold, turbine housing, and downpipe. Radiant heat works like sunlight, in straight lines from the source. Think of the difference between standing in the sun versus standing in the shade. Shade everything.

Thanks Steve, duly noted.

I finally made a dream come true when I ordered the Storm S1 in 16x8.
Stupid laws mean I cannot change wheel size without paying "that guy". And no big choice of tires in 15" means I am staying oem size.
Tire Rack is having a sale and I couldn't pass it up. Now the small challenge of making it through customs.

Wastegate is toast. Turbosmart 7 psi unit to be installed.

In other news... I have a trubo kitty.
I never would have thought this was possible. I had been around pitbulls my whole life. About a year ago I lost my 14 year old soulmate and was heartbroken since.
Couldn't have imagined myself adopting another dog let alone a cat.
All changed when these two little kittens showed up near the house and were begging for food. We were contemplating getting them inside the house because we both work full time and we never owned a cat let alone two.
Few days later and the black one was missing, we hope adopted, so we decided to bring in the other girl.
I still hope one day to rescue a pitbull, but most probably it would have to be a puppy so it can grow up with a cat.
