so, cheesy title, I get it.

Anyway, heres the documentation for my build thread as it slowly comes together. It came together quickly but the installation will probably be over the next months time in an attempt to get the car together for August 28th (local event with about $10K in prize money).

Everyone laughs when I tell them what size my turbo is however I bought it for $50 and then I mostly get nods of "fuck it, why not?" Which is why I bought this setup, I was looking for a moderate boost in power from my weakazz m45 setup and when the turbo came up for sale I figured now was the time to pull the trigger. The only thing cheap (read knockoff) about the build is the turbo, Everything else is pretty quality as I only like doing it right once.

Anyway, enough backstory here's what's happened so far.

This is being replaced:

Attachment 196352

Bought:

T04E ( .57 trim .48 compressor/.64 turbine a/r)

Attachment 196353

BEGI 3"downpipe

Attachment 196354

Tial 38mm wastegate

Attachment 196355

1.6L M-tuned shorty manifold w/external gate

Attachment 196356

quickslvr's megasquirt with boost controller/IAT sensor (to run map)/ and a ford tps

Attachment 196357

LC-1 wideband controller+305cc injectors

Attachment 196358

boring boost gauge

WHATS COMING:

460cc injectors as 305's wont be enough

HKS BOV

AFR gauge

full 3" exhaust (vband?) driver side exit with a special sumthin sumthin.
I plan to patch the hole on the pax side to make the drivers exit look oem just for something different instead of just cutting the bumper up.

I think thats it I plan to have it tuned at the shop by our dyno guy for cheap/free and then I'll be the snot out of it. I have a spare motor, which I'm cleaning up the head currently to swap on, then I'll do a full build on that after the car is all sorted and such.

damn, looks like your prepared. you got band-aids for all the cuts your gonna get, two decks of cars to play with when you get pissed cause you can get yo shit together, DO for yo BO for when your sweating your balls off and a tooth brush to fine clean shit.

just tell me your not gonna use the duck tape and band aids as a means to hold your car together......

your text and your image do not agree.

housing clearly says .50 a/r....not that it really matters, and fwiw i bet the turbine says .63 not .64. HAAAAA :noob:

I wouldn't laugh at the turbo you happen to get your hands on. Got a tad larger one on my 1.6L Miata.

theshdwconspracy 09-15-2010 04:17 PM

I'm getting this shit going again finally

I ran out of money and went into debt so i had to work work work to get some dollars back.

I just cleaned/flowed/rebuilt my Rx-7 injectors. I bought the 460cc injectors but they flowed 500/510cc's Is that normal???

I also picked up an HKS BOV and I'm ordering exhaust this week. So finally, I will have all my turbo parts and Next check will hopefully cover my tune and any final bits i need. Then I'll wait a little bit so that i can afford to fix whatever i break.

Pics to come later

Braineack 09-15-2010 04:21 PM

who's going to rework that DP to work with your manifold/EWG?

theshdwconspracy 09-16-2010 02:07 AM

5 Attachment(s)
What needs reworking? It fits alright, and i decided to route the Wastegate dump back into the DP, and I'll be doing that.

The injectors were tested at 43.5psi so that could be why they flowed that high. They were within 3% of one another which seems acceptable to me.

I guess you're lucky to score a SS DP made by BEGi for a T3 outlet on a ETD shorty manifold.

So confused. Just tell me what isn't going to work, I don't get what my DP has to do with the manifold and whether or not I have an EWG. The turbo is 5 bolt and so is the DP. Its not the separated gasses DP. It's a 3" which is going to take a lot of massaging to get to fit in the engine bay but I was aware of that. Something else I should be aware of???

It was a poly-lip but had been shattered before. I'll just order a new one when I'm done.

have you ever tried to put a square peg into a round hole?

theshdwconspracy 09-16-2010 02:47 PM

Mhmm, Is it just firewall clearance? or is there something even shittier I'm in for?

shlammed 09-16-2010 03:43 PM

is it made for that manifold?

the only thing that would be off would be the routing of the pipe if it bolts to the turbo.

it appears that it is made for ewg being that there is no bellmouth on it.
try it in your car... it might just be routed differently by a little and will need a few mods.

Just because the DP was made for a miata doesn't mean it was made for YOUR turbo and YOUR manifold. that's what I'm getting at...

Trent 09-16-2010 04:39 PM

You have to figure that the turbo can sit in any number of places next to the engine, depending on where the manifold places it, e.g. top mount, bottom mount, toward the front of the manifold, toward the rear of the manifold, etc. An inch off in any direction from the jig used to weld up the downpipe will mean that your downpipe won't fit.

You might get lucky though.

So i ordered all my Oil feed stuff from Earl's this morning. I got the 10mmx1.5 to -3AN adapter, 36" of -3AN line and a -3 to 10x1.25 for the turbo feed.

Does that sound right? I followed the wiki just wanted to make sure people run -3 with success.

Exhaust is on order now and I can't wait to get this shit DONE. It's been too long in the making.

Also, thanks for the heads up on the DP, Reworking it won't be a huge deal because I have full access to a shop and that's where i'll be doing all my work, but at least now I know what I'm in for.

leatherface24 09-17-2010 04:13 PM

-3 is what i have and it works fine for my .50/.58

theshdwconspracy 09-23-2010 12:49 AM

Alright, Everything is here! Wednesday it all gets put together and Thursday it will be tuned and ready to rip. Hopefully the clutch holds up! I will keep you all posted on the build progress and Dyno numbers/sheet

Also, pulled the pan from the spare motor to have a drain valve drilled and welded into the pan. Any advice for pulling the pan with the motor in car?

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-25-2010 03:17 AM

Thats not a T04E, thats an ebay t3/t4 50 trim. BIIIG difference.

theshdwconspracy 09-30-2010 11:39 PM

Two full days and barely progress.

Had to drop my subframe for the spare oil pan which was tapped for the oil return.

That ate up a lot of time. ALSO, M-tuned manifolds are DICK. I had cut the bottom bolt holes so that i could slide them over the BOLTS i have to use because studs wont fit since the runners are practically touching the exhaust manifold. That ate up a lot of time.

Cut the excess sheet metal to fit the turbo in the car.

Have to modify the FUCK out of Jefe's old down pipe to get it to fit remotely close.

Now I just need to put the oil return hose on, Fit up the intercooler (90% Done), and setup the ECU (nightmare)

More progress tomorrow, hopefully...

leatherface24 10-01-2010 09:41 AM

Wow first i hear of issues like that with the M-Tuned rods. Get what you pay for?

He's talking about the manifold, not the rods.

But still, I don't think i've ever heard of problems with the manifold, maybe just the waste gate flange placement.

OP, any chance you could give us some pics to show us the problem?

ALRIGHT! Progress made though, not a ton of it. Got everything bolted up to the car and got all my sensors wired into the ECU and in their right place.

Car wouldn't start tonight though, I think...(hope) its because i need to jump the F/P-GND pins in my diag box. I have the ST SIGN fuse pulled but everything else seems to be in order. I checked for spark and it was confirmed so tomorrow morning i'll try again. Any other advice would be rad.

Took some iphone pics during my minimal downtime to be something to look at. I'm really bad at documenting builds cause i just want to get things done and don't have time for pics.

ANYWAY

Manifold fitment:

This is off of cylinder 1 The others aren't AS extreme but still there isn't much room for anything. I ended up having to modify an open ended wrench by grinding the sides down in order to have enough room to get around the bolt enough to turn it.

Attachment 193758

pics of the engine bay:

I have the pipe off the turbo built and on there although my I/C piping isn't ideal, it works, for now. I need this thing running first and foremost and then i can upgrade stuff as i go. Clutch and diff rebuild are up first then the detail work will come next. Priority 1 is get it running because i daily the thing and I have to work everyday.

Attachment 193759

Attachment 193760

(edit) look at the manifold in this pic, you can see how tight all those bolts/studs fit. MAJOR pain in my ass

Full_Tilt_Boogie 10-06-2010 12:32 AM

Most manifold are like that. With my BEGi cast manifold I had to grind down the sides of a box end to get in there. Maybe doing the same would help you?

theshdwconspracy 10-06-2010 01:21 PM

Yeah we ground down a box end to get it to fit.

ps. IT RUNS!!!!!!

Its missing right now, but we're going to look at timing first.

I jumped the f/p-GND pins for fuel. Can i leave it like that or do i need to remove it?

shlammed 10-06-2010 07:00 PM

i removed my maf wiring and soildered it together for cleanliness.

you can do that, but if it comes loose in there, i wouldnt want to have to figure it out.

theshdwconspracy 10-06-2010 07:26 PM

car runs acceptably for now lol. Will have it on the dyno friday maybe monday

Some work got done today!

Timing belt and water pump were replaced because the pump took a shiiiit.

Got it done after 5 or so hours of work which isn't bad cause I'm slow.

What this means, Finally most of the bullshit stuff is out of the way so i can move onto cool/fun parts.

Exhaust might get done on monday which is going to be WILD.

ACT 6puck and lightweight flywheel are now on their way.

Diff needs a rebuild still and I'm working on that

Tune By the end of the week (i know I've said this a million times already but he's been really busy)

The car runs pretty solid now and I only had one small issue after first startup which was i didn't tighten a cam gear all the way so i made the worst knocking noise on the planet.

Oh, btw I finally painted my valve cover to something cleaner looking:

Car is running pretty solid, but i came across a small issue.

The car is only boosting 8psi and its set for 10+psi It seems like the car is only running off wastegate pressure, but my solenoid is <2months old.

The weird part is it is intermittent. Once and a while it will boost full pressure but most of the time it's only 8psi.

Any ideas on where to start looking. My first thought is checking all the couplers but i didnt know if any of you guys have had a similar problem. I'm runing a brain built ms

theshdwconspracy 03-15-2011 01:47 PM

So things are starting to get stale and I've decided to do more frustrating/expensive things to the car.

Goal is to be able to do one or two XDC events in 2012 lol. They are always fun events and there are good dudes driving so I want to join in on the fun.

Anyways, heres whats up with the car:

Has been running super solid at 10psi but i've been told it can handle a lot more pressure than that so 15psi is a conservative number that i've been told i can run with my motor. That should net me 250whp which is wayyyyy more than i ever planned to have, but I want to be able to keep up with SR's.

Thats only the small portion of what is in the works.

I am planning on doing a full RX-7 driveline. Meaning trans, diff, axles and including T-II front calipers/custom rotors, rx-7 rear calipers and rotors, as well as rx-7 hubs converted to 4x114.

The goal here is to have a strong driveline to handle all the abuse of drifting+"power" as well as have a functional e-brake. Some local driver (mike burns) made fun of my car for having no ebrake and consequently caused this bunch of non-sense. rx-7 calipers have a little more contact area and a better selection of pads (read Project Mu). Hopefully with this the car will be super reliable and a very solid drift car. My goal is to make it be able to function as well as an S-chassis while being something different.

Here are some of the parts i've acquired for the next part of the build:

RX-7 T-II front calipers

Attachment 190374

Defi Tach, boost, and water temp gauges

Attachment 190375

Aerocatch Hoodpins

Attachment 190376

I have a diff already at the house. still need to source a trans, axles and get a custom driveshaft. The guy doing my machine work has rear calipers already.

Distant plans include new cage, safety bullshit and mysterious wheels that I'm super pumped on getting (ps they're sitting in NC waiting to get shipped)
