Cool build looks like it's coming along nicely!
Did you already swap in your new brakes? I'm curious why you decided to stick with a 7/8" MC over moving up to a 15/16" or 1". I swapped to a 1" and The pedal feel is much better than with the 7/8". |

Currently the car is waiting for me to reinstall my Hard Dog Rollbar. I took it off this weekend when I was installing my new harnesses. I figured since I had it out I would paint it. Put on a final coat last night, I hope to install it tonight. Then configure my harnesses. There was a noise in my transmission after we cracked it. Once the roads are clean here I would like to tackle the transmission noise before I touch the brakes. Once the tranny is finished I will move on the brakes and other goodies. |

Well, over the weekend I wrapped up the car. I would have taken more pics but my free time was here and there and most of it was pretty late at night. However, I did get some shots.
Here is the makeshift paint booth. It actually did a good job of keeping the overspray contained. Usually I would paint outside or near the garage door. However, I wasn't expecting to paint this weekend and it was in the 30's and 40's. So I had this setup and a garage heater going with the lights. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427683388 Keeping the car clean and using my longboards for the first time this year. LOL https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427683388 The mounting brackets cleaned up nice. I am really happy I toook the time to paint everything. I wish I would have taken a shot of my roll bar. I sort of got caught up in making the most of my free time and just started working. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427683388 I find the weirdest things working on Miatas. While preping the floor for my passenger harness I found a golf pencil under the carpet. WTF? https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427683388 Finished Product. 1. The car is alive and active. Transmission is fine, but I am going to put the car on the lift this week to hunt down my rattle/noise.
Wheel was off one tooth on my first drive. Also the horn didn't work. My battery was out of the car so I forgot to test it before my first drive. Straightened the wheel and fixed the horn last night. Test drive this morning to pick up diapers. I made sure the box of diapers was safe and harnessed them in. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428850834 |

Well I was able to drop the car off at my cousin's house so we could put her under the knife again. It is time to get boosted.
I forgot my G12, so iPhone pics for all.... Here is the 92'... I took her motor and turbo, but she will be a monster when he is done with her. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 Having a lift is awesome. Having a low car means you need to get creative when putting it on the lift. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 Once on the lift this is the max height I was allowed to use. I guess it is only fair to set these limits when someone of my mental.... limitations ?!?!? ..... is allowed to use power anything. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 Wheels off, time to remove the bumper and start taking off OEM badness to make way for boosted goodness. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 Bumper off so we can get the intercooler setup. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 This came down from storage over the winter. Everytime I look at the powercoating he did on this setup, I fall in love all over again. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 From this angle the car looks really dirty. I miss my freshly painted engine bay. I really need to work on cleaning my hood this summer. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 Intercooler mounted up. It actaully worked out pretty slick. I guess when swapping from a 92' to a 91' you will run into things that just mesh up very clean. We had to make one bracket. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101310 |

Something I learned from my Asian friends when we pulled the engine on my WRX. When you need a bit of height, use your wheel as a step stool. This allowed my cousin to work on the intercool and I could pull stuff from the engine bay.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101385 Airbox gone, time to remove this header. I have to say, this header has bugged me. Even though it isn't in bad shape for 24 years of use, I felt so dirty putting on this clean ass engine. So I was very happy to remove it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101385 My cousin wanted to clean up the dump tube for this setup before we put it on my car. Some grinding and welding on the flange. I took it home to paint it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101385 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101385 New header and EWG https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101385 New exhaust. I realize now that I forgot to take a pic of the OEM exhaust that replace my Jackson Racing exhaust for 3 whole drives. Oh well, it was worth the $30 to pick it up for those 3 drives. I am going to be putting both up for sale soon. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101385 This is where she sleeps until Thursday night https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101385 I just love this garage and the Miata porn https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429101385 |

Well I took home a few things to clean up and paint. I have to say I am a fan of this high temp paint I picked up.
Here is the EWG dump tube. My cousin did a quick repair on the flange. So I cleaned it up with a wire brush and got it ready for paint. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429208231 I love my license plate bracket. However, i noticed the base looked sort of abused. So I also took it home to clean up and paint. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429208231 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429208231 I went at it with a wire wheel. I really need to find a vice for my work bench. It would make cleaning this stuff up so much easier. It will go on my list once the dyno tuning is complete. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429208231 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429208231 I have to say I am really happy with this paint. It really looks great. I look forward to touching up things in the engine bay that still require the "Jeff" treatment. Not that my car will be on that level, but I will do my best to strive for his OCD greatness. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429208231 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429208231 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429208231 |
Nice work, attending to all the details.
With the front lip painted, have you thought about painting the rocker panels white as well? |
Yes, it is on the list. The front lip was dipped white. I think I will do the same with the rocket panels.... As a temporary fix. I would rather not paint the body myself. I have a buddy that paints. I would like to have him repaint the car down the road. My front bumper requires some love, and a few other minor spots. 91' white paint, need I say more.

Lots of garage time in the next two days. First project...
I moved my water temp gauge out of my circle vent. Hooked up power to the Defi Boost Gauge and my AEM UEGO Wideband. Put the UEGO and Water temp where the radio was. The radio will be going up for sale. Put the Defi gauge where the water temp used to be. I am going to make a very nice gauge plate with my buddy. However, we were not able to get to it before my turbo swap. So Home Depot and an attempt to spend under $10 on a band-aid solution. My $3 gauge pod (for the time being). Just the power is hooked up to the two new gauges. I need to run sensors now. |

I was able to accomplish a lot today. I didn't take as many photos as I would have liked but here is a good summary.
First job was to take out the stereo. Next I wanted to swap the location of my water temp gauge. I wanted to run my boost gauge higher up. Since my water temp and AEM UEGO Wideband can have similar faces I put them together. A good friend of mine is going to help me create a very clean tombstone. Similar to some of the stuff we did on my old WRX. So for now I wanted a cheap way to mount my gauges. We will see how it all buttons up tomorrow. So far I am happy with it as a band-aid solution. Here is where my water temp gauge was. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429595078 Behind my tombstone was pretty damn dirty. Something for the todo list. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429595078 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429595078 I got all the gauges wired up. I did a youtube video above of the startup. I never really took a good picture of it mocked up. Tomorrow I will. So the gauges were done. I also hooked up my GrimmSpeed Manual Boost Controller. I plumbed the Boost Gauge sender into the engine bay and setup the MBC for when engine work started. Next we drained the gas from the gas tank... which involved smelling like gas. Also, I didn't need to add that extra 4 gallons prior to driving to my cousin's house. The one cool part of the job was doing it with a lift and rolling table jack. Talk about tools for the job. Once it was empty I went to the fuel pump. Pulled back the carpet and muscled it around the roll bar. Then I got access to this. 24 Years of road dust. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429595078 Took the pump out, swapped in my DW300. I didn't grab a pic of the new pump... so enjoy this photo of a stock fuel pump. :) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429595078 Also, the screw on the bottom of the FP assembly was a PITA. Lucky for me my cousin has a bag of tricks for, what seems to be every car issue. Needless to say he made that screw his bitch. |

Got more done tonight. Again, I failed to take a ton of pics. I was more caught up in getting everything wrapped up. I believe that all we have left is to fill the car with E85 and we can turn the key.... well I say that but I already know that mostly everything is in working order. Fuel pump was tested for a quick prime. ECU is working. Gauges are working. The only other parts that I think we have to swap over to my car is the diff off of the 92'.
My cousin was able to capture me working on the ECU. I was pulling a boost line to the MS3. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429679232 Got everything hooked up. This is my temp USB solution. I have a 10' USB on order from Amazon. However, I wanted something tonight to connect the MS3 to my laptop. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429679232 I was able to connect my laptop to my MS3. First off, I forgot that Rev sent me install/boot up instructions. I blame that on my awesome memory. After some head scratching and failures at connecting the MS3... I went to google. I did some searching and realized that I needed a USB driver. Rev had sent me a link to the driver but in the time between his email and today the link had gone bad. I was able to find the website and driver he had linked me to, based on words in the hyperlink. Then some more google searches turned up a thread on M.net where Rev confirmed to someone else where to find the driver.... I was happy that I had found the correct driver. Link - http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm So I downloaded it and proceeded to follow the directions Rev sent me... which would have made life easier in the first place. Everything connected up and I was able to run Tuner Studio. While I messed with the laptop and Tuner Studio my cousin wrapped up the fuel system. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429679232 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429679232 I am very excited to dump some E85 in the tank and fire the car up! I need to put in some time reading more about Tuner Studio. Now that I know the ECU will talk to my laptop, I need to learn how to add some fuel and timing for the E85. I am guessing everything I need to know is already posted on MT.net. |

Well, i never thought cutting a new key would be so much work. I brought my Mazda blank and Ultra Light Blank to Mazda to cut them both via VIN. My OEM key was bent up and not in duplication shape. Mazda cut their own blank and turned away the ultra light. Then Home Depot, Ace Hardware and 5 locksmiths turned me away. Some google searching led me to discover some 350Z cars came with Titanium keys. So i called Nissan and they said they would give it a go. They were super cool about it and cut the key for me.

How low are your intercooler pipes? The images of the intercooler mounted suggest the connection are very low ... like, too low.
I say this having had a similar setup in the past. The intercooler and piping got pretty banged up even at near stock ride heights. Seems most (both vendors and forum members) try to keep their intercooler setups at or above the radiator height. |
I had the same comment and concerns when we installed it. However, these pipes have had a few seasons and a few thousand miles on them while in my cousin's 92'. They don't have any scratch, scrape or contact ware on them. I plan to continue this tradition. He did a good job when he fabbed them.

Well I didn't take a lot of photos last night. I was in super focus mode. However, we got all of the last bits put onto my car. We dropped my VLSD out of the 91' (soon will be FS) and removed the driveshaft and axles. Then we removed the differential and axles off of the blue 92' (the driveshaft came off over the winter with the transmission).
So here is the one picture I did take. My new rear end setup that I am super stoked about - 3.63 Torsen Differential - Axles - Driveshaft https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1430836573 I also installed a new USB cable for the MS3, I got the 10ft one on Amazon... which looks way better in black vs the cream colored one I had running to the MS3 last week. I have it on my list to get a female USB port mounted on the dash in the future. For now I will just run the cable out of the carpet. Maybe wrap it up in the glovebox? I have to spend some more time to find a band-aid solution. I also got a new breather filter for the engine. It is blue, so that added like 50WHP. All that is left is to show up with a can of E85, set timing on Tuner Studio, add 30% fuel to my tune and take her for a test drive. |

Well thanks for the help and advice everyone (MT.net). The car is up and running. Took it out for about an hour last night and got some VE Analyzer time in. It is great to have a turbo car again, and I love the smell of E85. New exhaust sounds great! I really like the tone. My cousin did an exceptional job fabbing it up.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431437826 ToDO List 1. Dyno Time - email sent to book out time this morning. 2. Silicone Heater Core Hoses (maybe whole coolant system) 3. Turbo Blanket 4. DEI Exhaust Wrap for Heater Core Hoses 5. Heat Sheild for Brakes I am torn on if I want to swap to my BBK before or after the dyno session. I guess it depends on how far out they are booked. Damn, it is nice to have my car back. |

Picked up a Full Blown Turbo Blanket today. Going to start my heat sheild and blanket fab work while I am waiting for the dyno. They use the hook and spring system vs you typical wire setup. My buddy who owns NF Performance suggest picking up a Full Blown blanket vs a PTP Lava for the price. I know that the PTP Lava setups were run on a lot of our subies, but since then they have switched over to this setup. There has been zero issues with these and they are on cars that are double and tripple my setup in HP.

So I started the process of pulling off the heat shield on the turbo to run my new blanket. My cousin really built a sweet heat shield... I actually felt bad removing it. It turns out, removing it was a PITA.
So this bolt has no clearance. It made things interesting. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431833692 On the bright side, I went and picked up new tools for the heat shield. Also a 13mm wrench and a grinding wheel. I had to make the 13mm a slim wrench to get at that bolt. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431833692 This wrench rocks! I used my cousin's while we did all the swapping over the past few months. It came in handy quite a few times. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431833692 Ok back to car stuff. I got the new turbo blanket on. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431833692 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431833692 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431833692 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431833692 Next up is a heat shield to protect my master cylinder. I have some cardboard I mocked up last night, but I wanted the blanket on to get an idea for clearance. Heading to the garage now to knock that out. We'll see what I can come up with. |
20 Attachment(s)
I am proud to present the first hand built part of my car. It is actually pretty funny the different directions this took. I checked out heat shield threads on MT.net via google throughout the week at work. I have to say the tooth pick trick is awesome (MT.net Thread Here). So I started to build a shield around the Master Cylinder. I used the tooth pick trick to run hood clearance. The first version of the heat shield blocked the brakes and scooped air over the DP and Turbo. It was functional (in theory) but I had to burn it with fire. It was ugly. Pictures exist, but they will not be posted. So in an effort to be functional, simple and not attention grabbing I scrapped the first idea and moved onto this.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 So this is my engine bay without any additional heat fighting tech. The Turbo, Header, EWG Dump Tube and Down Pipe are ceramic coated. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 Here is the Turbo Blanket and Down Pipe installed. Yes, I need to pick up a bolt that mounts to the OEM airbox threading. Until then, a zip tie… it works. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432448803 |

Looks good, but think the rubber hose edging on the dp shield will probably disintegrate or burn up in a short period of time.

No that'll fail too. You don't want any edging. If it's thin enough, fold the edge over ~3/8". If it's too thick, sand it smooth

Hmmm.
Well I know that rubber won't last forever. I figured I could get a season out of it and replace over the winter. Seeing the other Vac lines on the car and the ones I used to run on my WRX.... I figured these would last a while. They are cheap to replace. Rubber failing doesn't make me worry. However, fire does worry me. I have some more research to do. |

So I have been picking away at my front and rear brake upgrade for a few hours in the evening this past week. It is the last major project I want to get done before my dyno tuning in July. Also I wouldn't mind some time doing my best to dial in a tune for my car prior to dyno time... we will see how far I get. So I ran into a unforeseen snag tonight that I should have thought about.
I wanted to upload all these at once, but due to my snag I ended earlier than expected tonight so.... Old Front Brake Setup https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432790419 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432790419 Old Rear Brake Setup https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432790419 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432790419 Old 1.6 Rear Brackets vs New 1.8 Rear Brackets https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432790419 So, then I realized that I had to swap the slider pin from the old brackets to the new brackets. Due to the holes being filled with brake grease I didn't notice the hex hole at the top (first look). I knew the slider pins were threaded and did a quick google search. It didn't help .... or.... maybe I got sick of surfing google on my phone through forums. So I went back to the bracket, wiped it down and noticed the hex hole. Here is my breaker bar hex key removal socket. I look at this in my hand in the garage and in my head xzibit says "I hear you like adapters so we put an adapert on your adapter on your socket on your hex key." um..... yeah Oh and I need to buy some blue loctite https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432790419 So this was my stopping point. Can you see my problem? Besides the ugly ass caliper that I need to paint black this winter.... https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432790419 I don't have the stupid brake clips and springs. Actually, I assume the 1.8 brakes have springs.... similar to the the 1.6 spring and clip setup I removed from my old setup. Either way, I can't believe it didn't cross my mind earlier. I was sad when I realized this. I knew I didn't have time to start the front swap and finish due to the time of night. Tomorrow I am going to have to research what clips I need and where I can find them. Unless someone happens to know a good place to pick some up. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432790419 |
Wow, lots of misinformation out there. So surfing threads (Google M.net and MT.net) I saw a lot of comments about not being able to buy clips and springs separately for the rear calipers. So I figured I would post what I found.
Rock Auto has them - LINK HERE Under "Disc Brake Hardware Kit" I ended up finding them at a local chain store nearby for about $8. Will pick them up today and hope to knock out the brakes over the next few nights. I want to do it tonight, but we will see how long my track event meeting goes (hosting 2 events in June and July). Nevermind... just looked at my parts pile and apparently when I bought my brackets, they came with the required hardware lol

I trimmed my rear dust shield too. I saw some posts about just bending them back, but I think the trimmed look will be easier on the eyes. I forgot to take pics, I will try and remember with the other side tonight. I need to grind down my trim job a bit, but I am happy with how it turned out. |

Well, I guess I made a bad estimation of my free time. I didn't take into account a 8.5 month prego wife and toddler duties. So this brake swap took longer than expected. Also I have decided to hold off on swapping the master and brake booster. I don't want anything getting in the way of my dyno time. I will do that project this fall or winter.
A few pics. I plan to get more. Due to my short spurts of freetime over the last few days I didn't use any of it to take pics. I should have... but getting this done was my focus. Damn my color balance is messed up https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1433261542 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1433261542 I also dipped my license plate bracket black https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1433261542 I plan to take her for a spin over lunch and maybe snap a few more photos in sunlight. |

Well, an hour drive on some local twisty roads and I am happy to report I am still alive. The brakes were able to stop my car. I really like this new setup I have. I didn't take pics as it was dusk when I finally was able to escape my responsibilities and go for a drive. I have a nice route that circles a few local lakes and takes about an hour. Lots of turns and elevation changes... But very low speeds. It's still enjoyable. After my tune is more dialed in I will start taking morning trips to the bluffs in southern Wisconsin and Minnesota. I hear there are great snake like roads hidden down there. Google maps confirms these stories.
I also did some more temp checks on my heat shield setup. Everything seems to be working great. The difference between manifold and turbo temps vs blanket, heat shield and master cylinder are worlds apart. Actually the MC temp was about 10* higher than the windshield washer fluid on the other side. That made me happy. This winter / fall I will need to get started on my ABS undertray and brake ducting. Edit... I took one pic. LoL https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1433303735 |
Pulled the heat sheild. The rubber edges seem to be holding up well with the silicone. We will see how it looks after some track time in July. My dyno time on July 1st cannot come soon enough. July 10th I am hosting another track day, so I should be able to get in some good lapping.

So last project before my tune. I wanted to wire up a new power setup for the GPS unit I have coming from aidandj. Instead of pulling existing power from somewhere I decided to add a new setup. I also ended up spending a bunch of more money on electronics because .... well because racecar. LOL
So father's day present from my wife... Dremel 4000. We I technically ordered it and then asked her if she wanted to make it my gift. LOL Painless Performance 3 switch fuse and relay setup 2 - USB power ports A Female / Female USB cable for tuning USB cable for powering the GPS Unit (GPS unit pending arival) USB cable to power the Samsung Tablet 3 7" that I picked up for $40 from a friend (not pictured) V1 radar detector (not pictured) to hardwire in https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435298708 This is the switched fuse and relay setup. Not sure if this was a good idea or not yet. I will have to do some work to remove a fuse if it blows.... but right now I figure it is a few screws and bolts so no big deal. Using velcro again to mount it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435298708 Since I was adding power anyways, I figured it was time to upgrade my power connector. The OEM one had seen better days. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435298708 This is the V1 mounted and the USB power for the GPS unit. So.... i setup my wires and hidden USB to power the GPS. This is during the process of tucking wires and getting ready to wrap it all up.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435299139 V1 power mounted in this nice void behind the glovebox https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435299139 Where I "thought" the USB power was going to end up.... THOUGHT being the key word. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435299139 Then I attempted to put in the glovebox. I thought everything was out of the way and I was really wrong. So clipped a bunch of zipties and started over. Here is where everything ended up behind the glovebox. It looks a lot better too. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435299139 There were two power wires that I was concerned about wear on with the ECU metal plate being removed and installed. So I cut some vac line and made some added protection for my wires to make sure there was no concerns about rubbing. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435299139 Also, time to get rid of the $1o gauge pod wire setup I had. This is my first time using a dremel and I am not great with metal work. I am 100% certain that I am going to redo this plate. I think I should have used more templates vs just going for it. It doesn't look bad. However, the mini-Jeff Buck in my head (OCD) is going to make me perfect this. For now it will do. No more projects before Wednesday's dyno time. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435299139 Finished product. Water Gauge AEM Gauge USB Power Female Tuning Port https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435299139 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435299139 I murdered the cut on the USB port.... well i murdered all the cuts as I was learning my dremel skills. All of those are hidden by trim. The USB will bug me. I made a trim peice out of a unused plastic cover for Cable TV for the house. I dremeled it down, made mounting holes. Cut a cleaner USB hole for it. Dipped it black..... and my screws were a hair too short to thread the bolts I had. ACE Hardware isn't open at 1am, so I am going to live it it until I make a new tombstone plate. |

So my day was interesting. At one point I thought I was going home with a light wallet and an untuned car. However, things turned around.
So, I showed up with a 20 PSI spring in my EWG. The EWG had been sitting a while and I had not run ALLOFIT in the car pre-dyno day. So low and behold the EWG was seized when we started to do pulls. The turbo would start to spool and then just jump up to 30 PSI and boost cut. We knew something was wrong. So did some checking and testing and figured out it was my 38mm TIAL. I didn’t have my tools and the dyno didn’t have (or seem to have) the tools to remove my EWG. So we ended up just popping off the top. During which I proceeded to drop 2 allen keys into the depths of the dyno floor (oil + dirt + random car juices). I also shot my EWG top into my firewall and put some scratches in my new paint job. Oh well, it happens. So the valve was seized. We could not move it with our fingers. There was talk of waiting until I could replace it. Then I suggested running no springs and just the top to use boost to break it free. IT WORKED!!! However, because the EWG was still on the car (and I am weak) we could not get the 20 PSI setup back in the EWG. So 5 PSI spring was the only other option. So we ran with it and cranked the MBC up until the boost stopped coming. TO DO List: Rebuild EWG Retune with 15 – 17 PSI spring to get us into the high 20’s. The tuner was pretty sure that we could easily run into the 30’s with this setup… but I only had Reverant run a 29 PSI MAF, so we will stay in the high 20’s Oh, and I picked up my gas from Quick Trip and not Holiday so it ended up testing at E70 and not E85. I will have to fix that mistake when we retune. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435805217 http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psddmybvmq.jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435805217 |

Took a 3 hour ride through SE Minnesota and SW Wisconsin. I found some twisty roads, got to enjoy the new setup a bit. Brakes are wonderful! Tune is a lot of fun. I will really push it on the track day I am hosting Friday (the 10th) for the MN Nissian and Infinity club (GTR's!!!). Then I am guessing I will start thinking about pulling that EWG to polish it up and toss in some anti-seize.
My buddy (who some of you know from the Subaru world, Xluben) decided to wake up at 4:30am and drive over to my house to join me for my cruise. He snapped a few pics on the Wisconsin side. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1436114959 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1436114959 |

Friday I hosted a Performance Driving School track night for Minnesota Nissan and Infinity Club. Lots of Z's and G's at this event. One heavily modified GTR running a prototype Modern Automotive Performance build. That car shook the ground when it took off from the paddock. I loved every moment of it. I brought a buddy who runs snowboard comps with me in the winter. He helped run the show to allow me to sneak out for 5 sessions in the Miata throughout the night. I love the power. Got sideways once mashing the gas too early before I was pointed. I have to get more track time with throttle modulation. I had a much better understanding of the powerband as the night progressed. Hit the grass one coming over a crested turn. It was one of those moments where grass to a nice paved runoff was a better call than trying to correct a front wheel going off track. My cone workers were happy to give me shit as I rolled by on the unused paved part of the course (my run off). All in all the car worked great. I noticed more pad transfer in my front Wilwoods than my rear 1.8 swap I just did. So i need to sort that out. My StarSpecs did good, but they are old and tired. So, I spent some money.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1436742232 Got home at 11:30 pm. Woke up at 4:30am and went on a cruise I setup. Myself + 240 + G35 and a EvoX. We attacked some nice twisty roads while the sun came up. Perfect morning for it. Then I was back home before the kids woke up! I have to say I love this car. So much more fun on the track than my 09 WRX Hatch was. Oh, i also felt great about the track night. The Northstar BWM VP came to check out our event and see how they could improve theirs. He heard we had a good thing going. They are a very big name for local track days in MN. He also offered to help instruct anytime we wanted him. Which means I am doing something right. Then MNNI asked me to host another track night for them before the night was over. MN Time Attack is asking us to host track nights in Aug. MN BMW also asked me to run a track night for them. So... Lots of free track time coming this season! I am just happy that i seemed to find a formula that works. My team and our approach, to make it as affordable as possible is really drawing lots of attention. |

Well.... I had a good plan and 20% chance of rain. Had to drive across the metro for the rubber to be mounted and car aligned.
My starting point https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1436999293 After stopping under a bridge in rush hour traffic 4 miles from my destination.... I had to think quick to avoid more downpour in my car. Traffic was going 5mph, maybe.... Maybe less. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1436999293 |

Haha that is awesome! I just wish I could prop you for that! Getting really jealous of everyone's going cars. Love the gold wheels on white :)

Thanks man. I am very happy the car is up and running.
I did a quick edit of some Kart footage from last Aug. I figured I would share. It was part of my cousin's bachelor party. |

Well I will start off with the spoiler because I am very happy with what Adam and I came up with. He is a great person to work with. He did a great job helping me obtain this final product, and he had no idea who Wu-Tang was. Which made it even more amazing when he shot me some of the idea's he had.

So... found some interesting things when doing this project. First of all, one of the previous owners took the gauge hood off, poorly. Granted this is a 25 year old car and 25 year old cheap plastic. However, at 1, 2, 3am... it sucks to find.
My first clue something was wrong. Random glue in the screw hole, and no screw. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 Then I sat down in the driver's seat. Following Adam's awesome write up on this website I got in a good position to pull off the hood. I made sure to take my time to think about how and where to pull. I wanted to save my tabs. Only to find out that they had already been broken off by the previous owner. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 Empty hood.... but the tabs were still there. So this is hope right?!?!? They were glued on once, maybe I can keep this hood alive! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 NOPE! First one crumbled in my needle nose when I tried to pull it off (by the metal clip). I figured if I avoided putting pressure on the plastic I could save it. So I still had hope. The middle clip is used my fingers, and it crumble just touching it. The third clip I also used my finger but took way toooooooo much time pulling it off. I did get it off with only a small peice being broken. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 Also noticed that this dust shield was busted off. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 I forgot to snap a pic. But the whole plastic peice on the bottom was missing. There was the two mounting points, but the plastic between was MIA. So everything over the steering column was gone. Which means that I have to save the 1 clip! I glued the last clip on, but it failed when I attempted to install it. When I snapped these pics I still had hope. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465529 |

So I decided to attempt to attach the top of the hood via these two holes and a zip tie!
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 Made holes in the hood https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 Yeah, so things got worse. The hole fit a zip tie on the work bench. However, the angle was differnt in the car. So I was attempting to push the zip tie head through the hole... and 25 years of age got the best of me and the plastic hood. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 So gorilla tape, because 3am and knowing my daughter is going to wake up in 4 hours... well I thought. She woke up at 5:45am and I hit the bed around 4am - 4:30am. Yet for some reason I am writing this instead of napping right now while she is sleeping. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 My chaos of a work station. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 Gauges on https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 Picked up a used window switch from Planet Miata. My windows currently take 2 - 15 attempts to roll up or down. I hope this fixes it. I forgot to test it out last night. I just installed it and put it all back together. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 I didn't take HVAC pics. It was like 2:45am when I started the HVAC work and decided to just bust ass on the install and try and get it done and still catch some sleep. Oh and this. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438465598 |
