Wired my 971-0002 TPS. Waiting on aluminum-nylon 3D printed adapter. Need to confirm the TPS wires are the same.

Does anyone know if the wire colors(Green, Red, Black) match up to the OEM colors?

After playing in the engine bay for close to an hour trying to figure out where to fit the air filter, I finally got to the only spot it would really ever work. It just BARELY clears the hood. Now the question is: To weld or not to weld? I feel like not welding might make it a little easier to take off if I need to get to the belts... but IDK, welding might look cleaner and be more robust.

Nice build so far. You've got a good collection going.

This site used to have some good TPS info on that model: http://westfieldmx5.devocht.com/mega.../variable-tps/
but I'm getting a 404 no-exist error on it now...

I think the wires match up on that model, either that or the red/black are reversed. I used "the kia one" and had to swap the polarity.

Yeah I remember looking at that site only a few months back. Guess he took it down for some reason?

I'll do a little more research before finishing up engine harness.

Got my collection of V-bands today and wideband + bung, so I plan on finish welding the down pipe tonight.

I actually have a 2 day autox this weekend so I probably won't get too much done on the Miata as I need to do some stuff to prep the FD.

Working on downpipe. Just need to weld in wideband bung and then fully weld everything.

Lots of pie cuts.

Cleaned up 5 of them for use in downpipe.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411505206

I already have a hell of a time taking it in and out without the v-band on the bottom... so it may prove extremely difficult to get it in again, maybe even impossible. But fuck it, will figure that out later.

Fitment is already nearly perfect in my book. There isn't a whole lot I could do differently anyway because there isn't really even any more room because it's 3" pipe.

Also I here is my nylon/aluminum 3D printed VTPS adapter for my Vishnay. I actually need to widen up the circle to so that the sensor can sit flush inside of it. The STL file was orignally for the BMW TPS, but that is just about the only dimension I didn't verify was the same. O well, should be fairly easy as it's only about 1-2mm that needs to be removed.

and unexciting, but necessary small aluminum pipes for air intake/charged pipe bungs for oil evac and wastegate connection.

Also, a little off topic, but had a 2 day autox event this weekend... which led to me finally finding another photo of FD in action after only having 1 for 2 years... haha... THEN, I found some even older ones from a past event.

They got some great camera's out there. I don't even think all the photos have been uploaded yet. But that's enough I need to get to welding downpipe. In closing, here was my fastest time of Sunday.

sugar sugar, sugar sugar, ow ow.

Get some back purge yo.

carbon 09-23-2014 07:41 PM

It's just carbon steel, not stainless. I don't think I need to back purge. I do have a gas problem though.

My gas bottle is really low, and I think the regulator is leaking, it is always showing a 15 cfm, and the whole tank seemed to drop by about 1/3 overnight and has gotten really low after just a little bit of use.

Going to be getting a new bottle tomorrow and take apart the torch and reassemble everything to check for leaks and try and use what I have left to start the post-downpipe exhaust.

Leafy 09-23-2014 07:46 PM

Thats mild steel? It really does look like not back purged stainless, but looking at the super fuzzy interior picture what I thought was sugar on my work monitor just looks like photo fuzz at home.

Touch it up on the wire wheel and make it look shiny so it can rust underneath the car :D

O2 bung welded in.

Yeah I forget if I mentioned it already, but I dropped my phone awhile back and the camera lens has cracks all through it. Honestly I am surprised the photos look as good as they do given how the camera looks... I should be getting a new phone soon, so better pictures incoming! (hopefully)

Tried to take another photo of the inside. The sugar could be cutting wheel dust also.

Wire wheels and acetoned' and cleaned up and coated so it WON'T rust underneath the car. (hopefully)

i of course think you had mad skills

but, those welds...any way you can clean them up?
other than that...can't wait for more progress pics.

Yeah the welds don't look like robot welds because didn't clean them and the miata is kind of in my fabbing tables way and did all of this half/crouched semi-squating position all while manipulating the pedal. My quads started killing me after awhile.

That ugly middle portion I've been trying to hide is actually another very small <5 degree piece I needed to get the angle right. There was a lot of gaps and I am not really good at filling huge gaps with GTAW. But alas, nearly full penetration everywhere so I feel good about it.

All of this on top of my gas flow leaking leads to the welds you see before you...

I've got excuses for days.

Just got my WRX a/c working again, so now I am going to go exchange argon bottles, take Miata off jack stands and roll out of garage. Then clean up the garage so I can get my fab table back to make welds that you fuckers won't complain about :D

Forgot to post some pics from finishing working last night. With the help of roomate and a brass hammer, I was able to fit the downpipe back in and got it all bolted up.

Also got wideband O2 mounted in there with an adel clamp for the harness. It's about 13" downstream of the exhaust. I know AEM recommends 36" for a turbocharger... but I'm gonna do a 1/3 of that because I don't think it will overheat. If it does, I can always move it.

Off to do errands!

Got hardware for VTPS, and also got another argon bottle. I am going to try using my dual flow regulator... but only use one path. Hopefully just my single regulator is leaking, and that the dual solves my gas issue... if that doesn't work, then it is most likely my gas exciter in my machine :( Luckily still got many years of warranty left if that is the problem, just going to suck because won't have GTAW for a little while.

The TPS shaft did not fit all the way flush with the sensor, so I could deck the mount down to have it fully in there, but it should be fine how it is. Just need to tighten down now and confirm the wiring colors to the harness side.

Does anyone know if the red/green/black on this VTPS matches the factory red/green/black? Everyone I asked who has one hasn't gotten back to me.

Nice work on the adapter. How much did that cost to print in nylon?

You can get it printed for ~$22 in nylon.

Been awhile since I updated. Been real busy with other things, but managed to get some progress done. I am actually really close to a start up.

If I didn't have A/C, I would have put the MS3 here

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1414985446

But, it won't fit with A/C so I had to put it here

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1414985446

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1414985446

MAP sensor hose and put a DT connector for the sequential inj/ign, wideband, and EBC.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1414985446

EBC mounted and wired.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1414985446

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1414985446

I need to weld on a few bungs and mount the wastegate... And I think that's basically all I need to do besides first start up with MS3.

Anyone have a basemap they could send me for RX-8 yellow injectors and sr20 t25?

carbon 11-22-2014 01:54 AM

First start up.

Sounds like an exhaust leak I need to chase down somewhere.

I am going to make an exhaust before I move forward with tuning.

This was a major test, because this start-up was representing an entirely new head install/timing belt etc...coolant reroute, along with the turbo setup, injectors, computer, etc... As far as I can tell everything appears OK. Engine was pulling ~20 inHg.

Ignition was locked at 10*, but I haven't confirmed with timing light yet.
I don't have a tach signal, and I doubt I have all the settings on the MS3 correct. For LS1 coilpacks I selected COP as they are "coil-near-plugs." Still only 3.5ms of dwell even though I can turn that up. Few other sequential related settings I haven't confirmed yet. But I digress, need to plan out exhaust.

I want to make a really quiet 3" exhaust, but am having trouble finding a muffler that I think will work.

I have a Vibrant 3" Ultra Quiet resonator on my WRX, and it did help quiet it down, but it wasn't anywhere near as much as I had hoped. So I fear a resonator only approach won't cut it for my needs.

Ideally, I'd like to really only hear the turbo spooling and barely any engine note, but that is going to take more than just exhaust work.

Anyone got any suggestions for a quiet 3" muffler that doesn't choke the hell out of the system?

carbon 11-23-2014 04:10 AM

I am able to find Magnaflow muffler videos all day, but does anyone have any experience with a Walker Quiet-Flow? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wlk-21054/overview/

Leafy 11-23-2014 06:25 PM

The walker quiet flows I've heard on miatas were kind of quiet but they also sounded like ass, raspy and farty.
