stare in awe of B6 power  Once I get the hang of how to use the haltech data log viewer I might actually hit triple digit power :dealwithit: |
video ever I'll be getting a real go pro or ion before the next season starts |
Your lean area at 5000rpm corresponds with the dip in horsepower.
|
Thanks for the tip.
I attempted to work on the map some more tonight but it spat the alt/waterpump belt off. The FD alternator appears to be offset ever so slightly. I'll tackle that tomorrow and get back to the action weather permitting |
car has been performing pretty flawless the past few weeks so I ordered the rest of the stuff to go turbo this evening. Hopefully it all arrives by end of the month so I can get a wastegate tune done before the season starts end of feb.
I see that people run into boost creep with a 3" exhaust....wonder if I should waste time porting the wastegate port on the turbo :dunno: |

Mounted turbo and manifold up, plumbed the coolant and oil drain. I am missing some fittings to do the oil feed. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454283899 Shot of the lower coolant hose and oil drain https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454283899 Had to pull the front covers and timing belt off since it seems the front main seal wasn't installed properly. I am welding up the end tanks for the intercooler as well but to be honest, me being a noob and 3/16 being at the upper end of what my welder can do, it's not coming out as nice as I would like. No pictures of that until I hit everything with the flap wheel :giggle: |
Your washer bottle isn't going to last long back there haha. :)

My angle grinder died and the hand file wasn't working out so hot to finish the oval hose. (the 90* needs to angle outwards hence the need for an oval. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454593326 I hate thin aluminum. I get about an inch of decent weld then the arc goes nuts. Probably didn't sand off the polish enough.:vash: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454593326 Thicker cast is yummy https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454593326 Finished the down pipe and tacked together the mid pipe. It looks like it's hitting the subframe but it's just hanging down a bit. I did it this way to clear the Autoexe rear under brace whenever it arrives. The muffler i got is a little too long and using a 45 off the pipe by the diff points it at the tow point. I am trying to avoid going left to U turn right. Might try a 90 and see where I end up this weekend. |

one of my better looking stretch of weld on the intercooler. I am getting the hang of it but most of the welds that join the sheet metal together need flap wheel jesus before i post pictures |
Good progress!
I found welding random bits of aluminum together to be problematic. Welding pie cut sections of the same pipe was waaaaaaay easier. |

It seem's my welder and I can weld any aluminum other than the thin tubing. The arc just kept jumping around and not making a puddle.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454885853 So I said fuck it and pizza sliced the shit out of some 2" 409 stainless I had laying around. Ran out of gas so I had to use my mig, which meant grinding down all the pebbles and trying to make the pipes look presentable https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454885853 Cut and bent actuator rod to clear the coolant fitting https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454885853 I need to re-route this brake line and wrap the downpipe https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1454885853 The NPT thread stripped out because aluminum so I welded the 90* adapter in. Black anodizing turns that doo doo gold color from heat. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...sndhn8jcb.jpeg dat jdm side exit turn down. I have many welds to finish once I get some argon Attachment 183813 money shot. I need to make 2 more mounting tabs for the intercooler and add the BOV port and a 3/8npt port for the IAT. Injector connectors are getting swapped this weekend to EV1's for the evo 550's I have. A friend donated a denso fuel pump meant for an RX7 so that's the fuel sorted out. |
It is pretty common to cut the shelf up underneath where the heater core hoses come out. Structurally it doesn't effect much. You can come all the way over to where the steering shaft comes out. It makes you huge difference for routing.
|
I was thinking of doing that but I should be able to bend it to clear and toss some gold tape on it. Trying to avoid cutting for the moment

Welded up the exhaust. I need to weld up the v band on the end and the muffler to complete https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455480410 Bent the brake line to get some more clearance. Think that will be enough with once its wrapped? https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455480410 Forgot the bung at home so didn't get to weld that up today https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455480410 Angled the DV down so it clears the filter. Picking up the hose to connect it tomorrow https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455480410 Shot of the oil feed. I'm using -4AN with a 1.5mm restrictor fitting on the turbo https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455480410 Evo 8 560's with new quick disconnect connectors https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455480410 Intercooler pipes painted black and looking 1000 times better My new gates racing timing belt and front main seal are scheduled to be on island by friday. Fingers crossed for start up next saturday  |
Mission complete!
I took 0 pictures cause...well they would look like the rest of them above. I thought I added more tension to the actuator after I cut it but max boost was 25kpa :giggle: I'll buy some 1/4" spacers and new bolts tomorrow and shim the actuator to see if that gets me to the 8psi goal |
Holy shit it's a whole new car and the tune is still all over the place. A friend of mine is gonna drive while I tackle the tune this saturday, first auto cross of the year is sunday so fingers crossed
|
Congrats man!
Quite the project. What will you do now with your new free time :D ? |
1 Attachment(s)
Thanks!
Right now I'm trying to figure out why the boost is so late. I think it's because I didn't put enough tension back in when I modified the actuator rod. I'm going by the hardware store to get shims and extra bolts now https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455800911 (i know the fuel needs a ton of work) |
Boost leak, I'm betting. Check all vac hoses on both ends. Clamp or zip-tie them.
|
I did a BLT and got a few small leaks sorted but the main culprit.....the actuator spring is just weak. I set the boost cut to 10psi and disconnected the vacuum hose from the actuator and....
We have boost! I'm going to get another actuator later on today and hope that solves it. Side note, this car is a fucking animal now :giggle::party: |

Shimmed the actuator a total of 1/4" & connected up the ECU based boost control. My lap top died before I could even start tuning it but so far it's definitely working.
I have the boost cut set to 70kpa and the target boost level at 65kpa. I need to drop the duty cycle a few percent as I have managed to hit boost cut a few times. It really doesn't need more than that for autocross on sunday. AFR's taper from 12.7 down to 11.3 from the onset of boost till redline. Timing ends up at 11*. It needs some general smoothing for the transition from the idle and cruise areas and some "cold" start/idle work (no idle air motor) for the tune to be complete. |

Ignore the AFR curve. I am having an issue with what the wide band says and what the haltech logs. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456003906 Boost curve |
today's mission: launch control
stock wiring between the clutch switch and the haltech was grounding out. Ran 2 brand new wires from clutch switch to haltech and ground and I now has launch control :likecat: Tomorrow we autocross :dealwithit: |
In other news, I spun a rod bearing. I |
7And this just took a turn for AllOfIt
BP6D and a 6 speed coming from japan. Should be here in 3 months. Stock bore CP pistons, K1 rods, King XP bearings, ARP head studs and a Cometic head gasket are being ordered also. Reason for keeping the stock bore is that localy its like $400 to bore and hone a block |
That looks fun :likecat:
Sucks to hear your bearing say f-it. Which one was it? #4? |
I haven't pulled the motor apart yet so I'm not sure which one.
Wonder if there would be anyone with a 1.6 that wants the later style head with the solid lifters. |
This looks fun. Kindof janky, but totally fun.
|
Hell, i would love to have a late model 1.6 head to dick around with. Dont think i would want to pay that shipping from the islands though.
|
Bummer man! We(I) need the full story. What happened?
|
It's my fault of course. I knew the turbo was leakin/burning some oil through the turbine seal and I neglected to check oil levels between runs.
The course was laid out so it was faster to just leave the car in 1st gear. So I was between 6000 and 7500 for the entire course. Add that up with the chicanes and that's what happened. The EDF died so I couldn't soften up the damping so as you can see it was stuck in maddriftz mode :( I might just get the manual adjustment hard ware for the teins. As soon as I pull the motor I'm having the bay and interior resprayed to clean up the appearance a bit. |
Well I missed the motor auction in japan so I decided to look on ebay and scored one for $1k shipped to my freight forwarder.
That being said, new manifold materials and turbo rebuild kit are coming with the motor. Hopefully the 5 speed stays together until the 6 speed arrives:dealwithit: |
6 weeks later. Picked up the motor and stuff today. Looks fairly clean and it was off an automatic which is nice.
I also got the adjustment hardware for the Tein's so I can bin the edfc. Internals should be here next week so I'll be tearing into the motor next weekend to rebuild. Can't wait to get the car running again. Impulse buy of the month...Maxxis VR-1 245/40R15 tires. I'm trying to get my current wheel and tire setup sold to get some 949 15x10 wheels. |

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1459992068 I finally ran power to the other side of the shed, installed a 5k btu ac unit and picked up a cheap blue tooth sound tower. Got some work done today that was turbo related. After lots of measuring to double check clearance in the bay I ended up with the below
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460420220 Evo 10 turbo with a 20g compressor wheel from my old evo. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460420220 Trying to keep the 2 scrolls isolated up to the wastegate valve face so I split some of the 1.25 Sch10 down the middle and added a divider wall Will finish that on the weekend |
That looks very close to the frame rail.

yeah i have about half an inch of clearance. It's not fully welded to the flange so i can take the runners down a bit to get some more.
I got the bearings, pistons and head gasket yesterday. Picking up the Manley rods and borrowing a ring filer tomorrow. I'm headed to orlando for a week on saturday so I need to order up a few things and get them sent to the hotel so I can button up the long block and get it in the car. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460943235 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460943235 |

My hole saw has seen better days so I need to pick up another 2" and 2.5" to finish it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1463094332 Painted up the block. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1463094332 Cleaned, oil squirters blocked and King bearings in place. Main bearing clearances ended up being 1 & 3 - 0.0020 where as 2, 4 & 5 were 0.0015. The rods all came between the 0.0015 & 0.0020 plastigauge marks so on the loose end of OEM https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1463094332 Gapped the top ring to 0.0055 and the second to 0.095 I'm supposed to get the head, oil pan and valve cover back for the weekend.
