Round 2: Wannabe turbo NB6C

5 Attachment(s)
Picked up a white NB6C off a friend for a really good price this week :)

It's got rust in a few areas (which you will see below), bilsteins with no bump stops and unknown coilovers, 15x8 Konig Helium's, 225/45 R1R's and a Koyo radiator.

Immediate plan is to sort the rust, seam/spot weld the chassis, make new floor plates and gussets for a cusco bolt in cage that I have had for years and get it to paint.

The car came with some parts waiting to go on; Energy suspension bushing kit, Moog front inner tie rod ends, new clutch master, slave and braided line. I have an S13 T25, Evo 550 injectors, synapse recirc valve and a Haltech PS1000 collecting dust for now. The plan is 200-225whp on the stock motor.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427292221
Got most of the interior stripped

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427292221
Clutch master has apparently been leaking fluid for some time

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427292221
Hole in the passenger floor

100 yen coin

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427292221
And the heart breaker :crx: I bought some 16ga sheet to patch this area up once I get the windshield out and cut the rust away. The other side has but it's surface and not so bad.

Other than that there is a patch of rust right behind the drivers side seat belt tower. I hope no more large rust related surprises await me underneath.

Got some more work done!

Chassis and drivetrain separated

Yesterday I pulled the windshield and front wiring harness.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428171922

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428171922

I have some 16ga sheet to replate those 2 spots.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428171922
Will be cleaning all this up later on today and removing all the seam sealant I can to prep for seam welding.

it's cleaning up nicely. Sorry for the potato pics

Got the fuel tank dropped & ebrake removed so now it's just seams to clean. Most of the seam welding will be done by adding spot welds but a few area's will be stitch.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428286595
started on the upper fire wall seam. I will be welding it from the back side also.

Also got some stuff on the way from rock auto
Stoptech front & rear pads
Centric front & rear caliper rebuild kits
Centric front & rear pad hardware
Gates waterpump
Gates timing belt kit
180* thermostat
GM coolant hose for reroute

Plan is to have the welding completed by friday so the shell can go to paint.

18psi 04-06-2015 12:11 AM

Nice progress.
Now return the silly 180 thermostat and get the proper 195* one

Sirnixalot 04-06-2015 10:34 AM

Thanks for the tip. Where I live the temps are 80*F+ year round, I have never had issue with car's taking long to warm up.

I will check what the thermostat that's in there now is. If it's a hotter one I'll just keep it in there.

I got alot of work done last night

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428896518
Passenger side windshield rust repair. I used 2 sheets of 16ga sheet. Everything has been coated in Ospho, Rustoleum etching primer and Rustoleum epoxy enamel. It just needs some sealant to be ready for proper paint

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428896518
Rear firewall and transmission tunnel. I still have to weld the other side of the seam under the car. I plan to add some spot welds also once I get a new bit, the one I have is dull as fuck

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428896518
Drivers side shock tower is almost finished. I still have the recessed area to the right to do but the seam sealant in that location is too real. Also you can see some of the firewall welding action

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1428896518
wider shot of the bay.

All the welds are being done with a Lincoln Weldpack 125HD, all hail flux core! I am not fixing to use my Longevity tig on any of these sealant infested joins. I am wire wheeling, razor bladeing, propane torching out whatever sealant I can get to but there is always some left that gets to snap, crackle & popping :(

I am also picking up an RX7 motor and transmission from a friend who is swapping an LS1 into his FD :dealwithit: Plan is to get the car back together with the stock drive train, sort the suspension and brakes then gather up parts and shit for the rotary swap over the next year.

I have managed to drill all the spot weld holes for the windshield opening and door seams. My right elbow is toast. Tomorrow the plan is to finish seam welding the car, I have to drill some more spot weld holes by the rear seatbelt/gas tank area.

There are some feral cat's that are living in the bush next to the car so I hope to snap a picture to make this build thread legit.

I did manage to get the ecu cover, rear metal panel thing, fuel tank filler, the metal thing that secures the rubber boot around the fuel tank filler and the soft top brackets painted. Etch primer and rustoleum gloss grey all the things!

I found out that the soft top water drain bins were blocked tighter than a nuns ----. Why is that relevant you ask....

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429324243
More shit to cut out and replate.

Does it make any sense re-installing those plastic drain bins if I put on a hard top?

Also any insight if the following spot welds are worth the tennis elbow?

I took a better look at the area in the last pic above. Doesn't look like there is any merit in adding spot welds there. I will just make a seat belt tower brace.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429446498
Main hoop base plate. This is 12ga steel sheet. The feet on the cusco cage are 11ga. I will be welding some nuts on some 11ga and welding that plate to the underside. I still have to add the side, corner and back plate.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429446498
Front of the transmission tunnel. Can't see the rear but that's done as well.

My boss came over to get some help painting the wheels on his STI so I didn't get to tackle the wheel wells. The body shop is tied up until the end of June so I have time on my side.

I am bushed. Doing this shit in caribbean heat ain't fun. Better than the cold though....or at least I'm built to cope with the heat.

Family allowing tuesday I might get to sort out the wheel wells and call the seam welding complete. I still have to do 3-4 rust patches and then it is ready to take a flat bed to the body shop

I have the interior mostly buttoned up. I have to cut out and replate some holes on the passenger side. Not sure when I will get time to go back at the car so I just painted everything.

Base plates for the main hoop and front tubes are done. I still need to add for the rear tubes. The next big push will be to weld up the wheel wells.

My brother is taking the diff to work tomorrow to knock out the bushings. I have installed all the rear bushings. Once I get all that stuff back I will be reinstalling the rear subframe/control arms & hubs so I can roll the rear fenders, hind sight

Got a Torsen for the all time awesome price of $185. I couldn't find any with 4.10 gears so I'm stuck with the 4.30's for now.

Spotted an auction for a single plate ATS carbon clutch, I'll know by the 6th if I win that. After that I'm pretty much set for all the big parts.

shellshox345 05-30-2015 11:13 PM

Awesome work tackling the rust. I was on a cruise that stopped at the Cayman Islands and I saw a lot of cool cars. Is there a track/autox where you'll be able to stretch it out?

Sirnixalot 06-02-2015 11:02 AM

Thanks man.

We do get some pretty nice cars down here yeah.

We used to have a 1/8th mile strip but that went sour. Up until last year we did have a monthly Auto cross. We use an industrial estate as it's all we can get permission to use. 2016 we may have a better venue lined up.

Sirnixalot 06-05-2015 09:26 AM

no ATS carbon. Opted to get an new ORC single plate instead. Worked out cheaper than the FM kit. Everything will be here in September so if the damned rain would stop I could get a move on and have the car put back together by then.

Sirnixalot 06-19-2015 08:30 AM

I have gotten absolutely nothing done since I last posted.

Hurricane season started on June 1st and the weather has only now just gotten better. The company I was working for out sourced the store I was working at so I had to dedicate my time to re-interviewing for my position with the new company (which I got thankfully:cool:)

I did manage to order a few bits and pieces

V8roadster frame rails, HD sway bar mounts & the engine bay re-enforcement plates for when you have to cut the wings to clear a V8.
Delrin engine mounts
ARP head studs
Cometic head gasket
Felpro rear main seal
Mac 3 port solenoid to wire into the Haltech
3" compressor inlet adapter

The hardtop, suspension, diff & clutch/flywheel will be here end of August

Tuesday is my next day off and if it's not raining I'll finish the wheel wells & prep the frame rails with the bfh.

Cleaned them up and shot them with Duplicolor red caliper paint.

Realized a bit too late that I ordered the 0.040" head gasket and not the 0.070". Would have been nice to drop the compression from the 9.4:1. I guess I'll have to keep the boost low :(

The only picture I managed to snap was this. I still need to clean and weld the bottom part of the piece that goes across the rear of the wheel well.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1435091906

The rear is finished, rear base plates for the cage are in and I cut the rust out front behind the drivers side seat belt tower. The seams are cleaned for the drivers side wheel wells but I just did not have the stamina to finish them (went to the gym this morning)

I can't wait to douse this thing in degreaser and pressure wash the crap out of it so my brother can paint the interior and bay.

Well the hard top didn't fit in the container :crx:. Will be coming later on in the year on the next one. But the clutch, diff & coilovers are coming so I have that going for me which is nice.

Freight forwarder says next week for all the other shit from Miami.

Also ordered manifold and down pipe materials

The head flange & turbine inlet I ordered from Turbo-Flanges.com: Alloy, Stainless Steel and Titanium flange products for the head, turbine inlet and outlet. and the rest from acerace

I didn't save a pic of the AutoExe auction before it ended so just for reference

What I want to take a look at when I get the rear one mounted is if there is any way I can tie the diff end of the PPF into it.

Once I get fender braces & the 949 swaybar package the chassis/suspension will be complete.

Sirnixalot 07-03-2015 01:33 PM

A friend want's me to redo his intercooler setup on his Evo3 so he's bought me the Vibrant 18x6.5x3.25 core for the Miata as payment for the work.

Plan is to use some 3/16" sheet to make some end tanks to point the piping up so I can do an over the rad setup.

All I need now is some 2" aluminum bends & piping and the oil/water lines for the turbo kit to be complete.

This is all coming together alot quicker than I imagined. Need to get my ass in gear and finish the seam welding.

Degreased the front of the motor, installed the TSE reroute block off, changed the front main seal and water pump.

Inspecting under the valve cover I found caked oil residue on all the things :vash: Since I am taking the head off to do the head gasket I'll just oven cleaner and diesel the crap out of it before re-installation.

I got pretty much all of the drivers side, gas tank area and transmission tunnel wire wheeled. Next challenge is the drivers side wheel wells and underside.

The coilovers, torsen diff & clutch/flywheel will be here next weekend. A friend is bringing back the windshield seal and some oem stuff from Canada in 2 weeks. Things are coming together, I just need 2 solid days of over cast skys to finish the welding.....it's fucking HOT down here

Fast forward a bit and I have the collector and easiest runner tacked

Pizza slices are in my down pipes future

I am hoping I can get away with a cast 2" elbow off the compressor for over the radiator piping. It looks a little tight with the timing cover. The intake piping is dead simple at least

sixshooter 08-10-2015 08:10 AM

Wow, you've been busy.

leboeuf 08-10-2015 10:43 AM

Looking good!
Hopefully I finish my manifold before you do haha.

I wish I would have followed your posts on seam welding... That tar glue stuff gave me some trouble this weekend...

Sirnixalot 08-10-2015 12:49 PM

I'll be back at the car on friday. I really need to concentrate on finishing the chassis so my brother can paint it and I can get it back to a rolling shell. Something tells me I will be distracted by the manifold and down pipe fab.

That seam sealant stuff is the worst. I do NOT envy you for using a Tig for those door bar mounts. I am wondering if I shouldn't make some door bar's as well but my main issue is lack of a tubing bender or DOM tube locally. Not sure if I will see the same benefit after having seam welded the door openings as well as all the rocker panel seams?

Not sure if I am mistaking a brain tumor for an idea or not. Around the side of the radiator intercooler piping? I am trying to keep the run short but I'm not really feeling the over the radiator routing.

The cold side is a fairly similar ordeal. *scratches chin*

I was hunting for a while and that didn't show up in any searches. Really didn't feel like necromancing a thread from 2011. Thanks for the pictures.

I'll have to think about it some more. I don't honestly think the extra 3-4ft of piping will really matter in the grand scheme but I want to try and keep it as short as possible because 1.6

Look's like I'll stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just go with the standard intercooler pipe routing.

Got some more done tonight.

While the saw was running I setup the drivers side of the cage to weld on the A pillar tab. Used a step bit to open up an existing hole and welded in a 10x1.5mm nut. The difference is amazing. Before the tab I the front bar would shake separate from the car, now if I try to shake it the whole car moves. I need to do the passenger side and top of the A pillar.

We are having an Autocross meet in 2 weeks. I am hoping we spark enough interest to do them again regularly.

Welded on a mounting tab for the intercooler core. Rested the oil cooler above it. I figure if you guys can get results with it by the steering rack horizontal to the ground, I can get results in this location with some ducting.

Swapped the 7kg/mm springs to the rear and installed the new 12kg/mm springs on the front. Tomorrow I'll order some bumpstops from the Honda dealer.

I am off on tuesday so I'll get back on the seams and hopefully have that finished to get the underside painted

Sprayed manifold with some muratic acid, washed it off with water and wiped it dry then gave the manifold a coat of VHT flame proof. Instructions call for last curing temp to be 600* but my lowly oven can only muster 525*. Will be wrapping it soon

My brother will be tackling all the seams with 3M seam sealant and then taking the car as is to paint. Got a gallon of BMW A30 Interlagos Blue metallic to have him spray on. Letting him choose if it will be gloss or matte.

In the meanwhile my to do list stands as
Drop motor/trans/front subframe
Clean up & paint front subframe & control arms
Clean up & paint front brake calipers
Get all 4 rotors resurfaced
Put motor on stand
Pull oil pan to weld on -10AN oil drain bung
Pull cylinder head to degunk (valvetrain is covered in whats best described as tar)
Reinstall cylinder head with new Cometic gasket
Install timing belt & shit
Install rear main seal
Install new clutch/flywheel

I need to order
Intercooler piping & couplers
Turbo oil feed fitting & drain adapter
Oil cooler lines & fittings
Innovate PSB-1

Are you sure the frame rails should be sealed up like that? I thought they were designed to let the water out if it gets in there. Where as now it will sit in there and rust it out. Just my two cents

There are no holes on the bottom of the V8R ones so I decided to just seal them up and spray undercoating inside the frame rails. I don't really plan on driving this in the rain so I am hoping I don't encounter any more issues.

Vuti 08-27-2015 07:15 AM

You know that changes in temperature leads to water condensation on metal surfaces? You just speeded up your frame rail rusting.

sixshooter 08-27-2015 08:23 AM

It will be ok. There is a big opening on each end and where it says v8roadsters.

lol @ changes in temperature. It's always hot and humid here for the ambient temps to drop below 75*F it has to be 4:30AM for that one cold day in February and even then humidity never drops below ~80%

I guess I should break down what I have done to both the car frame rails and the V8R pieces

Step 1
Wirebrush wheel and get to bare metal

Step 2
Brush on some Ospho and let sit for 24hrs Ospho Rust Treatment - Since 1947

Step 3
Rustoleum self etching primer

Step 4
ACE rust stop paint

Step 5 is yet to be done. I need to find an applicator nozzle that will reach all the way up and down the inside of the OEM rails for the zeibart type rust proofing.

I was aiming to mitigate water that I would drive through settling in between the frame rails and the braces and coming through the bolt holes. For my climate I think this was the best compromise.

But you guys have given me some food for thought and I'll read up a little more, it's not like I can't remove the front and rear sections of sealant for some more breathing room between them.
