Snoopy - 949 Racing//Supermiata project.

949 Racing // Supermiata has a new project car.

"Snoopy" is a 2003 Club Sport that we saw listed on our local craigslist with no contact info. The price justified a near-criminal level of snooping around on the interwebs (hah, get it?) to find out who and where owned it. After some Google Map-ing, Google Earth-ing, Zillow-ing and even Strava-ing, we managed to get a message to the seller. Presumably before anyone else was able to.

We left the shop on Monday after work and drove ~2 hours to retrieve it.

It was dark when we picked it up and has been raining since this morning, so no other pics for now. I'll gather some more once we get it into the shop and up on a lift.

doward Jan 10, 2017 05:55 PM

This was seriously a too-good-to-pass deal. Emilio and I spent the trip down brainstorming a 'reason' to be adding another Miata to the fleet. What could we do with one of the rarest Miatas ever, without completely bastardizing it, while preserving most of what makes it cool?

Of all the past project cars, the ones than were the most well-received and influential were the more approachable/reproducible ones:

95R: https://www.miataturbo.net/general-m...project-63125/
Deviate: https://www.miataturbo.net/general-m...s-k20a2-82901/
The Rental: NB Track Miata build
https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=349012
Crusher: https://www.miataturbo.net/race-prep-75/crusher-61450/

So in the same vein as 95R, Snoopy will stay in the dual duty realm. Streetable enough so as to function as an occasional daily driver, but still super quick at a lapping day or time attack. mostly bolt-on mods that can be installed in stages by the majority or our customer base. I call it an "Every-man's" build.

We will be targeting Street class.

Miata nerd pron:

100 Club Sports were made in 2003.
50 red, 50 white.
25 of each color were soft top cars, 25 were hardtop only.

The Club Sport is why you're allowed to run a Miata in CSP with no top at all. You can "update" to the Club Sport's soft top delete, then run with the detachable hardtop removed.

""The 2003 Miata with Miata Club Sport (MCS) package - $19,995
Miata racers, Mazda has a special package for you. There will be a special run of 2003 Miatas, designed to reduce the cost and time required to prepare a car for competition for SCCA Club Racing and/or Solo events. Unnecessary equipment such as air conditioning, audio, speakers, power steering and wind blocker has been removed. There will only be two options, a rear spoiler and a hardtop with soft top delete.

Two models of the car will be produced, one with a hardtop aimed at the track enthusiast and one with a soft-top aimed at Solo enthusiasts. Initial production will be 50 vehicles, 25 hardtops and 25 soft-tops. Only two colors, Pure White and Classic Red will be offered.

The Miata with the Miata Club Sports (MCS) Package is available for purchase to members in good standing with MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Team Support program, Miata Owners Club, and Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), and who wish to purchase the vehicles for competition for the period beginning November 15, 2002 and ending December 16, 2002. Beginning December 17, 2002 the vehicles will be available for sale to the general public.""

""This is probably the NB holy grail, a super-light machine without air-conditioning, power-steering, and no stereo. When Porsche makes a car like this, they charge you more. Mazda charged less – just $19,995 — but they restricted production to 25 soft-top models and 25 hard-tops.""

Back at our shop today. It's a single owner car. Spent it's life parked outside so the paint and lenses are really oxidized. Hoping a buff and wax will bring some life back to the paint.

Crazy find, looks like a cool project. Kind of disappointing to see that it's going to be used for XS/Redline events though...

Any penalty for removing "baby teeth" and fog lights?

dcamp2 Jan 11, 2017 09:25 AM

Neat car... I did a couple of those Roadster cup races a few years ago- only thing that bums me out is seeing a $2k diff allowed in "street" class.

Girz0r Jan 11, 2017 09:46 AM

That's a nice car. Be Gentle.

These events are local and pretty low-key for us. Basically it's fun without us spending a lot of time or money. The Maxxis Supermiata Cup series and our endurance racing schedule are the opposite. A lot of time and money goes into those. We can be a little bit fried after a weekend so these local events are a pleasant escape for me and the crew. Any other use for Snoopy would involve making a lot of irreversible modifications to the car which we don't want to do.

Time trial, not race ;)
Roadster cup rules are half a page. So yeah there are a million little things that most guys won't take advantage of. I cannot resist the temptation.

Dunno. That's not the low hanging fruit anyway. The rules allow a dipped, caged and seam welded tub in Street. None of which we will do. In these types of events, we don't keep any prizes or awards. We always hand down any schwag to the next person on the podium. All the cool parts we'll bolt to Snoopy are already laying around the shop. More just swapping some parts, not a ground up build like our other project cars. Snoopy's interior will remain 100% untouched for example. Stock steering wheel, everything.

yeah yeah

emilio700 Jan 11, 2017 01:16 PM

As mentioned before, the car spent its life outside. So corrosion and rodent droppings are part of the bargain. ew.

No A/C, check
No ABS, check
No P/S, check
No C/C, check
No A/C fan, check

Notice the intake heat shield has no relays on it. Weird.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5fc66c7567.jpg

We plan on leaving the interior completely stock. Unlike every other HPDE or race car we build, this one will not get FIA seats, harness or removeable steering wheel. So airbag and no HNRS will be the order of the day. #BecauseTimeAttackBro

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...25b673c7ec.jpg

The A/C switch is a dummy. Neato.

We'll pull the stereo, speakers and replace that DIN with the cubby the car left the factory with.

I've read or heard somewhere that the square top would make you run dangerously lean (maybe with us ECU) without a MS/tune. Any truth to that?

love the plan for snoopy

We'll see. Deleting the cat should make it run fat, squaretop might lean it back out. We've never verified. /fingers crossed.

That's been discussed here a few times, and the general consensus, however recently scenturion posted dyno plots with AFR plots that shows his NB1 running well within target AFR with a flattop and stock ecu.

dubya Jan 11, 2017 08:55 PM

Nice find. Strange seeing an NB2 that stripped down. Any chance you'll roll it across the scales before getting to work on it? Accurate weights on a stock Club Sport are hard to come by, unsurprisingly.

chriscar Jan 11, 2017 09:30 PM

Please wrap it 949 orange.

You're kidding right? It's a white MCS man. Gotta stay white. We can wrap anything, but not this one.

We'll do our best to bring the faded OEM paint back to life then seal and wax it. I really want this thing to be as OEM as it can be when we're done with it.

1. Replace both O2 sensors and get it "smogged".
2. Yank tattered soft top, stereo and speakers
3. Weigh it.

It has maybe 3g gas and OEM sized 280tw tires. Any guesses? I'm thinking 2330 or so with the hard top, just how it left the factory.

We have one of those eensy LiFePO4 batteries for it. RB exhaust which is quiet but not light. Header should save some weight with cat delete. Xidas and 15x9 6UL's will save a bunch. Adding the HD Sport roll bar should be a wash. It would be nice to get it down to 2300 w/o driver.
