Lol, I meant if he were to help me build a "zero points" NASA TT engine.

Man, that sucks to hear about the engine problems. If it were me, I'd swap in the 80k '99 engine (assuming all of the compression/leak down numbers look good), and then dyno the car. If it looks strong, then maybe just stick with it for a while until you decide what to do with your broken one.

A damage report.

#1 is fucked, here's the smashed spun bearing:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431293930

And the crank on #1 :(
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1431293930

Horrible pic, but you can see how bad #3 bearing is. I don't think this was done by 15 miles.....must of been the original noise I was tracking.

Good news is that I think the head is fine, just not sure if I want to sell it to recoup some cash or keep it for a spare.

I get the new-to-me engine this coming weekend. I'll do some maintenance items on it(t-belt,waterpump,seals,etc) and I'm putting a 7lb fidanza and a fresh cluch on it while it's out as well.

Hopefully I can make the Road Atlanta event at the beginning of June. If not, I'll definitely make the CMP at the end of June.

Wow good effort that is stuffed! Hope the new motor goes well for you.

90civichhb 05-11-2015 10:16 AM

Man, that is pretty bad scaring on the crank. Get some quotes from machine shops and slowly build that block up. You will have a good engine for, at the least, another year or two. I bet you could build a nice zero points engine for a decent price given enough time to acquire parts.

Yeah, it does suck but shit happens! I'm not even sure if this crank is reusable.

By the time I build a zero-points engine I'll want to do something else with the car haha.

flier129 05-29-2015 09:44 AM

Car is back together and running! Going to put some miles on it so I can maybe clean out some of the dirty gunk from the bad conventional oil. So another oil change and some tecron.

Running at Road Atlanta next weekend with NASA. Running DE4 Saturday and getting my TT check-off ride that afternoon. Then I'll be competing in TTE on Sunday! I'll be on the RS3s, so I won't be competitive. I'll be glad to get my TT license though.

90civichhb 05-29-2015 04:25 PM

Sweet! What was the no spark issue?

concealer404 05-29-2015 04:53 PM

Yeah! What he asked!

flier129 05-29-2015 05:42 PM

I fucked up the timing lol.

Finally got around to putting in the steering wheel....
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1433093730

Man is it so much better than the stock wheel. My hand/leg clearance issues are gone, I can still see all the gauges, and I actually have more space to move my leg which means it's more comfortable on longer drives. The QR makes getting in/out of the car 10x easier. Glad I did this, worth the money.

I do need to add a resistor or something to get the SRS light to quit flashing, not good for my a.d.d. lol.

Looks good. You could always just unplug the SRS box, could you not? I pulled the light out of my gauge cluster and then it started to make this crazy beeping noise, so I just unplugged the damn thing.

I just put a resistor in mine.

First event at Road Atlanta was a success! I ran DE4 for my first 2 sessions, then got my check-ride for TT on my 3rd session. Finished out Saturday's last session in DE4. Rented a transponder the next morning and did my first TT session.

I'm not even going to ask "where can I improve" because I know there's lots of places where I can. Overall, I thought I did pretty good for the first weekend at RA, first time in TT, and I was on the RS3s. The rest of the TTE field were on r-comps. Hopefully some SM7s or R7s will make up 1.5-2 seconds. Then I think I can personally improve about 1.5-2 seconds as well, which would have me running close enough to the front 3 guys in TTE around here.

I met Johnny C at OGracing this weekend, we talked about rainbows, fireproof underwear, kittens, and rainbows just as all proficient mt.net members should while at the track. Johnny, I remembered what I wanted to ask you about..... transponders! Do you sell transponders? Also, when I returned mine Julie was looking for one you rented out today?

Anyways, had fun will do again!

Honestly, Hoosiers should be worth at least 3 seconds over RS-3s.

Transponders are a racket. They should cost about $80 max. Sigh.

I need to update this thread, but I haven't done much of anything to the miata besides drive it and change the oil. I also bought a Z for an autox car and DD once I sell off my 99 civic. It's actually really fun and I got a ridiculously good deal.

Heading to ViR in two weeks. Mounting some C71s on the spare 15x9 6uls I have. I know it probably won't be a top contender on those tires and my driving, but it'll be first time up there. It'll be a blast either way.

OGRacing 09-29-2015 10:09 AM

oh man sorry i missed your post. yep we sell transponders.

Search results for: 'transponder'

I ditched my "aero" to save some points. Both the trunk spoiler and front lip are now off the car. I decided to just swap trunk lids rather than actually removing the spoiler.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444674684

Real tarz! 205/50/15 C71s on 15x9s. I was hoping they would be better than my rs3s, but they were old rocks couldn't do anything with them :-\. Planning on sticker R7s beginning of next season.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444674684

Mounted up the extremely overpriced transponder, even used they're ridiculously expensive. ($350-$400 used)
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444674684

I also finally ditched the soft-top. The car sits around 2420lbs with some gas and me in it. I figure 20lbs is a good buffer, I'll keep the car at this weight.

Went to ViR and had a blast! It was my first time there, so lots of learning going on. Watching this video on my PC made me realize I had A LOT of mistakes. Welcome to critiquing, but I know it's sloppy basically everywhere.

As I said before, I ended up taking off the C71s and just ran the RS3s. I came in 2nd on Saturday, 0.5 seconds behind 1st, 2:23.0xx for 1st and 2:23.5xx for me. By the end of the weekend I was 2.4 seconds off of 1st in TTE, 2:19.0xx for 1st and 2:21.4xx for me. I think I could of definitely had a win if I would of had some R7s. The fastest SM guys there this event were running 2:17s for reference. I think a few PTE guys were also in the 19s. My noob-ness is showing thru being so far off pace

ViR is currently my favorite track

Wait wat? You're going to autocross the Z over the miata?

On a comfort / DD / exhaust note level, I totally get that, the Z is a nice machine.

Anyway car looks great, "just driving it and changing the oil" is the goal my friend. Well done.

Yeah, the Z is a lot more comfortable driving to events than the miata. It'll also be faster raw time and it's a more competitive car for it's class (STU)

Thanks! I finally got this new engine to burn a little oil, 130 track miles burned about ~1/4 of a qt. I suppose that's also including the drive up there  My rear bumper doesn't have nearly as much black soot on it as it did with the old engine, this one seems healthier.
