A couple of projects I have coming up:
PFC brake pads, compound "11", fresh rotors and fluid. Ill be doing my first track day in this car on March 10 at Thunderhill (east). I picked the pads based on rave reviews on this site, this will be my first time tracking a car on anything but stock pads (previously tracked cars include Golf R and C7 Corvette, both of which seemed to work okay on stock pads, admittedly I wasn't pushing them as hard as I could). Grabbed some fresh centric rotors and RBF600 fluid. Fresh Mazda-speed Engine Mounts. I am throwing in some new mounts in the hopes that it cures my mis-shifting into 3rd under power situation, it's super frustrating, also my friend did a minor money shift because of it... Megasquirt! I bought a megasquirt like 2 months ago and haven't opened the box, bad miata owner, bad. BP4W + Supercharger swap. I got a great deal on a low mileage BP4w motor with a Jackson Racing Supercharger. Not sure on my timeline on this, but my car already has a CARB sticker for a Jackson racing supercharger so I figure ill give it a go and see how she does. I have a turbo car in my life, but ive never had a supercharger, so I wanna check that whine out. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ZC...T=w940-h705-no |

God I really need to have my doctor listen to this cough... But if you live in CA and legitimately want to be carb legal its the best bang for the buck solution. |
lol yup

But if you live in CA and legitimately want to be card legal its the best bang for the buck solution. I am encouraged by TDR making almost 200 whp with basically the setup I have now + their intercooler/crank pulley... But mostly I got it for basically less than $500 bucks (with the an upgraded pulley and the TDR tensioner) , so I figure lets give it a go! |
On ca91 thats not gonna happen. Even on good gas it will take a really aggressive tune to do it. But ill shut up and let you find out now lol

Spent the afternoon hopefully solving my lack of bump travel issues. I installed a set of custom top hats made by a local Miata enthusiast who was not happy with the quality of the isc top hats. Paid $225 for a set of four beautiful aluminum extended top hats.
Haven't been able to road test them, it was my plan to swap brakes today and my top hats were scheduled to arrive tomorrow, i figured because of President's day, but I guest the post office doesn't get many days off anymore. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c5a3827049.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e6542cee5e.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...dfd31dc948.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...426763c8f5.jpg |
Nice car and evolving build, I saw from your intro thread you are from Sac, i'm an hour or so away. Hope to see you around sometime.

In before dumping M45 and swapping to turbo like I (and every other M45 owner) did...
|
Well, at least it isn't a 1.6 with an M45 like I have... I am making a whopping 145hp according to VD... I still have a stock cat and a very not good tune though. The instant boost in first and second is nice though?

Yeah, but 5-8psi gets old :P
And yep. About 50% more. Made 100hp on a dynojet NA with a crappy tune by me on 87 though! |

I too think you'll end up with a bigger SC, or more likely a turbo.
Source- been there, done that. |

So I couldn't find the right allen key to adjust my suspension to account for the new top hats and I dropped my car, I measured less than 3.75" all the way around haha. Had some nice scrapping on the driver side fender liner all the way to the parts store. looks kinda cool anyway, but I bought a set of allen keys and brought it up to 4.5". Can't wait to try it out and see how it rides. Even with the accidental drop it felt a bit better. I was really riding the shit outta the bump stops before.

Well, I got my motor mounts done, after spending hours on struggling to get to the final driver side bolt, I finally did the sensible thing and pulled the header, which made it a snap to get out. I was up till 2am on Friday working on it, then again first thing in the morning. My fingers still hurt. not sure it made the improvement in shifting that I was hoping for, but my driver side mount was cracked.
I sent my car off to my friends house, who is doing some detailing work in his spare time. He is working wonders on my car. I go to pick it up tonight, but here are some of the pictures he has sent me. The car was loved by it's previous long term owner, but kept outside under a cover and it really showed on the underside/engine bay. A thick layer of dirt coated the underside, there were leaves in the engine bay and interior and the paint was significantly water spotted. He did a single stage correction on the paint, but said a 2 stage would have been more appropriate. Oh well, it's a track car. Also, he opticoated the wheels to minimize brake dust damage from the track pads (we will see). https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1b01e678fb.png https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7f760b4908.png https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4ca0c49e30.png https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1f444dfcae.png https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1be366faec.png https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...651153cd6b.png |
When did you buy your TDR seats? I'm surprised they have single center hole in bottom part instead of 3 (for 5 or 6 point).

Is that an R Package? I see a leather wrapped steering wheel, and no R spoilers.

The leather wrapped steering wheel is something the previous owner added as well. |
Some photos from Ru's first track day. 3/10 thunderhill west with @ongrid. Clear skies and nice temps all day. Gotta love CA winters.
Proud to report nothing went wrong whatsoever. Had a great time hanging with friends and got my first taste of trying to get my slow car to go fast. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3869386c7e.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...dfee08d648.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...28bf5714ad.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d4d6941f1e.jpg |
While no powerhouse the M45 has it's place. With good intercooler it will be a fun car. One of my friends has one setup the same way.

Doing some things:
I removed the tow hitch from the back of my car so I could installed a proper tow hook (and the weight savings, duh). When I went to set down my car using the diff for the first time (I had previously used the tow hitch). The diff moved upward considerably before fully contacting the subframe which gave me some pause about taking the car to Track Night in America (I still did). https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4067d5b2d4.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...63d5e053e1.jpg Quite a bit of space there with the diff fully pressed up into the sub-frame... so I ordered some poly bushings (I should have done it when I swapped these in I guess, live and learn). I also noticed I have a leak from one of my axle seals which left a nice grease ring under the car (only leaks while spinning). Essentially I bought all new seals, bolts, crush washers the whole nine yards because I don't wanna keep messing with it. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...278d7fd284.jpg Also, over the weekend I found a killer deal on some Xidas Race coil-overs with the spherical mounts and 800/500 springs, which is probably overkill for my casual use but we will see. Little dirty, but the savings was significant over new. I wasn't unhappy with my previous suspension but my friends won't shut up about Xidas so now ill probably be that guy who doesn't shut up about Xidas. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3d500c69cc.jpg |

Plan the intercooler to make it easy to switch to the turbo that you'll inevitably end up with.
I ran the M45 on my 1.6L for about a year. I would describe the experience like being granted a night with Kate Upton, but only being permitted three pumps. I switched over to trubo and it's a pretty big difference, although I'm still on my 1.6L motor, so now it's like I get four pumps. When I swap in my 1.8L it will be like eight pumps, which is cool because I'd probably only need six or seven. |

Went and partied like it was my birthday! It sort of was, only a few days off. happy 32nd to myself.

Definitely room for improvement, but for my first day at Laguna Seca I was happy to just have progress. When I started recording laptimes in the 3rd session I was only doing 2:06... basically a walking pace. Also, my first day with the Xidas on. Some guy came up to me and started explaining to me about the damper setting, saying I didn't need to set them super high. Then he introduces himself as Shaikh from FCM. I guess I should have listened, had a half spin the next session hahaha. In my defense, he was talking to me until my session started so I didn't have TIME to take his advice :p |
Well after my 5th track day (thunderhill west, new PB 1:34.7) I finally decided to install the megasquirt that's been under my guest bed for several months. Got my vacuum line routed and wideband wired and calibrated and installed, fired her up, checked base timing, calibrated TPS, and had an anticlimactic drive to get some gas. Seemed to run pretty well from what I can tell. I ordered a car charger for my laptop since the battery doesn't last real long, gonna do some VEAL tuning this weekend. Current setup:
Stock BP05 MS3 Basic Innovate MTX-L Stock Intake/Manifold/IAT Jackson Racing Header High Flow Cat Flying Miata Dual Exhaust CA91 On Deck: BP4W M45 K&N Intake for NB (+NB throttlebody/IACV) GM IAT https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3n...N=w847-h635-no |
So I still haven't done anything with the BP4W or M45 so I decided to try and sell the M45 and fund a VERY mild N/A "build" on the BP4W:
Stock BP4W block BP5a cam Port and Polish Decking the head .030 The result should be a significant bump over the stock BP05 that's in their now with it's low compression pistons and poorly flowing head. I don't really have a goal powerwise, but I am thinking if I see 150whp ill be satisfied for now. I thought about going with higher compression forged pistons and rods but it just seems like a slippery slope... Anyway, heading to Mazdas at Laguna Seca in a few weeks so hopefully Ill see some of you out there! PFA a little shameless ripping off of Emilios work coating his intake tubing in thermal wrap. Didn't come out great but oh well, it should work fine. I need to come up with a solution to block off the filter area next. I have a header blanket I keep meaning to install too. I also threw some of the heat wrap on my heat shield less undercarriage where my drop pan comes very close to the Catalytic Converter. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e4ceddc715.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f3068feb20.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b289f9edbc.jpg |
May be interesting to start with an nb2 block if you want slightly higher compression but don't want to build the motor. VVT may be nice, but I guess the utility isn't there for a car that's going to live at the higher revs where the mechanism isn't doing much.
Are you going to do valve springs as well? May not really add much power if you increase the rev range a bit, but could save you a shift here or there which may be worth something! |

Your latest photos seem not to show up for me :redx: But you've got a mate with mad skills taking the earlier track ones :D
Your car is very shiny. Is naice. I haven't quite understood what was going on with your diff bushings... did both of them totally break apart? |

Thanks for the note about the pictures I forgot that MT.net doesn't play nice with google photos, copying and pasting. Should be working now? Yep, my friend knows wassup in the detailing dept. No, they just had a ton of free play that was causing me to think they were the origin of my difficulty shifting into 3rd at speed. The poly bushings did not help... Last night i finally got around to installing my ugly used header blanket and my proportioning valve. Still need to bleed the brakes but things are looking pretty good for M@LS. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7bcc4c7516.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0fe970ce56.jpg |
Engine building things are happening. Sent the spare BP4W head off with Twibs415 for some porting action when I saw him at M@LS. The original plan was to have him port it, deck it a fair bit and install the BP5a cam I grabbed from mazda motor sports and strap it back onto the stock 2000 bottom end. Unfortunately it looks like Cyl 2 had a house party and did some damage to both head and piston so we are probably going to at least do rods and pistons. TBD.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a67b88c19d.jpg |
Nice build! Just be careful with that proportioning valve, as your M45 inlet elbow may need to take the same spot. You may have to rotate it 90* or bend the brake lines a bit more.
|
Ordered
Supertech 84mm 9.5:1 Pistons Ebay Forged Connecting Rods Boundary Engineering Stage 2 Oil Pump Sealed Power VS855 Valve Springs Basically, id like to add some revs for tracks where it doesn't quite make sense to up-shift, and some over-rev protection beyond that. |
sell the mp45 already to fund your turbo setup.

that mp45 is just waste of scrape metal and ruins your build -- youre better off staying n/a than even bothering with it at this point.

So I dropped my block off for re-bore at the worlds iffiest machine shop... the guy was nice but the place looked like a place where engines go to die, definitely could host an episode of hoarders there I think. It was close and cheap though, and he didn't seem real busy (kinda semi retired guy it seemed).
If he screws it up I guess that'll give me a reason to switch to 85mm 11:1 pistons ;) |
is this in sacramento? performance engines by any chance? or motor-machine?

Decided to upgrade my sway bar mounts to the beefy AWR units. Did not realize when I started that I would need to remove the radiator, which is probably for the best, since I probably wouldn't have started if I had known.
They are a tighter fit than I expected, I guess ill need to smack em a little with the ole rubber mallet. Nerd info: The AWR mounts weight about 2 lbs each, the stock mounts weight about 3/4 lb each, the Racing beat brace and blocks weight about 2.5 lbs all together, so net weight gain on my car is basically a wash. These mounts seem like they are probably overkill, but ill be happy to never have to fiddle with those racing beat blocks ever again. For sale: Racing beat blocks and brace... https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d47d11bbd2.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2dfd1bda33.jpg |
Prepping for the swap! Picked up my motor from @Twibs415, need to get the oil pump, rear main seal, oil pan on, along with the water pump/timing stuff/valve cover, etc. Plan is to have as much done as possible before I pull the old motor, since I need a few things off of it to complete the swap (coolant reroute, EGR, etc).
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a97f3fda82.png https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1c2d0a81fa.png BTW a VW Golf makes an excellent Miata motor transport! :D |
Making some slow progress on the motor. Got the water, oil pumps on, rear main seal plate and new seal, coolant block off, timing gear, Fluidampr, I went ahead and got a 36-2 timing wheel. Last night after a couple drinks I decided it'd be a good idea to go ahead and paint my valve cover, VHT Wrinkle Grey. Looks okay so far, but I guess we will see once it's cured. The paint seems pretty forgiving anyway.
Bought a Kazespec Baffle after reading Emillios thread about the importance of baffles. Not 100% on it, does anyone else have the Kazespec one? To me it seems like the rear trap doors are impeded by the stock baffling in the pan. *shrug* Oh and I sold my supercharger, so it's offically no longer a heaton M45 build! Maybe someone can fix the title for me? Probably not tho https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4ac2c469c1.png https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...dff1db4237.png https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7f03cc40f1.png https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a90d40a2b3.png https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7838a2b4df.png |
Congrats on selling the super! I managed to move both of mine, made a tidy profit off them to, which is nice.
