FYI...totally just ribbing Marcus. I'd let him drive my car again in a heartbeat. Pretty sure my POS car broke causing the incident, not Marcus's driving. |

Maybe I’d better drive Marcus’s car one more time beforehand... |
Because I am a ricer...
Plan is to box/shroud that 6" velocity stack filter and try to keep the intake tube at ~19". Then wrap it all in gold foil. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...022a70ad59.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...421cf58a6f.jpg |
List for Sonoma is:
1. Replace broken trans. My 5th gear has been dead for several events. I only need 5th at one track, so i've run Buttonwillow and Chuckwalla with a "4 speed". A 6spd and MiataRoadster shifter are going in. 2. Relocate my killswitch. NASA tech did not require it to be within drivers reach while belted. Easiest place to install it was passenger b pillar area. It is now moved to the center of my new 'dash'. 3. Delete my keyed ignition. I removed the lock pin from the the steering column over the winter, but hadn't made the leap to wiring in my Longacre starter panel. That's now done, thanks to John. 4. Aerocatch latches. PITA, everybody warned me. I procrastinated, but now they're done. 5. Seat and seat mount finalization. I've settled on the Sparco Circuit II and Jerfspeed mounts. Rear humps removed, seat sits on the floor. Stellar. Battery wire along PPF now runs through rear bulkhead and into passenger side of cabin. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...86715ee92c.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...9bc9ce75e3.jpg Old location of ignition cylinder left of gauge cluster is now deleted:https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...bdd6d47497.jpg Dual USB charger is hardwired for GoPro and/or AIM Solo charging, or whatever else comes up. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e963ef63d2.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...38a8ae13bf.jpg I had to cut even more crap out of my hood. I am considering how much deleting of the OEM latch to do. Wasn't ready to make to make the jump last night with the cut off wheels. I'll probably drill the rivet, cut the loop in half an fish it out, leaving most of that aluminum material there to box the front bow of the hood for stability. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ac2d8de92e.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d6781cf001.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f56324fef4.jpg |

Are you not going to run SPM anymore or swap the trans back for those events?
We'll see. I only did 3 SPM races last year, zero so far this year. The car is really fun with the wing and splitter, especially on Hoosiers. The 6spd and more power will only make it even more funner, and even more not SPM S2 legal. I still go to the majority of the SPM events to drive something or give ridealongs or whatever, and will maybe rent a ride if if i get a craving. It is the age-old SPM Spec class vs tinker toys in ST. I like the project-ness of an ST car. I get to be a ricer and the car goes faster. If the new cylinder head doesn't make >15 more whp, I might reevaluate. Sonoma is an SPM weekend, but I'm just trying to win HPDE, as it will my first on-track action since my TBI. If it goes well, I'll race again with NASA ST5 at Buttonwillow. |
Back at the end of 2017 I shattered 5th gear in this $100 NB 5spd. I flushed the fluid a few times and ran my car as a 4 speed for 3 events, ultimately crunching something else in the box at Buttonwillow when my throttle body asploded. Today, I fixed things to nearly wrap up my prep for Sonoma. While I was in there, I found a super crunchy pilot bearing, and while replacing the pilot bearing I stripped one of the threads in the 10 yr old Fuji Racing flywheel. So I decided to upgrade from my eBay clutch... 1.6 Puck Rigid Supermiata Clutch 1.6 Aluminum Supermiata flywheel MazdaRoadster short shifter NB2 6 spd Slave, pilot and throw out bearings Amsoil MTL ...and there was one casualty https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...13df89b2d.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...cdb4135aa.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...187543b0e.jpeg Should be getting close to my goal of 2100lb comp weight. Still need to swap my cut rear bumper, remove the factory hood latch and loop stuff, and cut the crash beams out of my doors. Then unbolt my ST5 ballast for the HPDE championships at Sonoma and Laguna. |

I drove it tonight. Man. It rips. 6spd and 4.3 is a hoot. The car is a rat, and my buddy Dave, the previous owner, would absolutely love its current config. I am more excited to drive this version, than any previous version of Button, including the 2016 NASA Championship engine with the fancy OsGiken. 143whp ~2000lbs (2200 with me in it) 2014 “headgate” Spec Miata motor. Sounds like a riot. If it turns out to do well in ST5 might be copying this for 2019. Although I'd probably just run 6spd / 4.1 since that's the f/d I already have laying around. Is that 143whp avg? (assuming yes). That's about all I make peak on e85 currently :(
