This is what I ended up with for the oil drain. The hose is slightly kinked. I'm also using a barbed fitting with AN hose. Is either of these going to be a problem?

Oil feed came out better than expected.

Banjo was a huge help on the feed line, drain is now almost straight down.

Kept the behind the headlight hot side routing. Bundle of snakes for coolant lines and unused electrical connections. A bitching new air filter. Amsoil EaAU3560 FTW.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1419756755

Added a big ass hole on the passenger side, now they both match!
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1419756755

And the best fucking part? It still runs! Started it up and let it idle for a couple minutes, aside from an O2 bung sized exhaust leak it sounded pretty fucking awesome, if not a little tame. I am stoked! Next up is a fresh batch of Rotella, install the O2 sensor, and go for a drive. FUCK YES.

Stupid question time. MSM came with 2 AIT sensors, one before throttle body and another in the filter. Megasquirt only cares about the throttle body one, right? I can remove the air filter one, right?

midpack 12-29-2014 05:38 PM

It's alive! Took it out for a first drive today and quickly came back in for a boost controller. Waste gate only maxed out at a rather boring 3psi.

Exhaust sounds fantastic. My early comment about it being tame is only true at idle, it sounds bad ass as the revs climb. Sounds like racecar. 3" turbo-back, no cat, and a big ass MagnaFlow muffler. Even after clearancing on the stock "butterfly" brace it's still hitting there and at the rear brace.

It feels much faster, even with less boost, compared to the stock turbo. Could be the cold (35f) weather, or being used to my slow ass truck.

Goes in for our biennial safety inspection tomorrow and then the paperwork gets sent off for an emissions waver.

Ryephile 12-29-2014 05:43 PM

Congrats on the resurrection!

Random question: Is that an S&B air filter?

midpack 12-29-2014 05:53 PM

It feels so good having a running car again.

Nice job on the porting, no creep at all. I'm glad you posted it up when you did, I was only a day away from ordering a new one and was happy to save a few $$$. Thanks!

Couldn't resit taking it for a quick drive this afternoon. Compared to the wimpy little IHI, this ting is a monster. Spools better and doesn't have the awful boost taper. This thing is gonna be fun :fawk:

Mmmmm delicious boost at 2k RPM
Attachment 238526

Ryephile 12-31-2014 02:23 PM

Very nice. Perhaps just as impressive is at the end of that screenshot, it shows how quickly boost builds after a gear change.

Any idea what that glitch is on the RPM halfway through the pull?

midpack 12-31-2014 08:04 PM

Hey good catch. It took 0.53 seconds to go from 0 TPS to full boost in a 4-5 gear change.

0.63 seconds of missing log data. Ever since upgrading my MS2 it has been plagued with issues that Reverant has yet to fix. The most minor of the issues is occasional periods of missing log data. Should have taken the money spent on that and put it towards a PNP Pro from DIY.

Discovered my new Singular Motorsports ECU bracket will not work, the upper mounting tab is too short and holes are in the wrong spot. :vash:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1425871768

patsmx5 03-09-2015 12:16 AM

Sweet build sir, just found it and read it. If you're still having exhaust hanger problems by chance, I "adjust" mine with a zip tie around the rubber part to make ones that are too long shorter. It works, it's reliable, it's light, it's cheap!

midpack 03-11-2015 01:42 AM

As it turns out, I am in idiot. Once the door lock relay bracket was removed Singular's ECU mount slid right in no problem. For some reason I was thinking that bracket was welded in place and part of the whole ECU mount infrastructure.

Exhaust clearance was mostly taken care of by some longer hangers that ended up being a little too long so hose clamps were added to shorten them up a bit. I can't imagine zip ties holding up under there.

patsmx5 03-11-2015 01:48 AM

I used zip ties on the rear ones, they lasted for years, DD, autocross, drag racing. But I used man zip ties, probably have a 300 lb rating.

EO2K 03-11-2015 11:24 AM

Use a hose clamp to snug them up, then use zip ties to tie the clamp to the rubber hanger. Unless you have a massive amount of force on the clamp, it can slide off the end.

Looking good! I'm glad you figured out the ECU mount thing, I was getting nervous.

midpack 03-13-2015 12:08 AM

Ah yes, my zip ties are all shitty HF ones. They break if you look at them wrong.

I don't think the hose clamps are going anywhere. Most of the rear mounts ended up smashed all the way together with the hollow section completely eliminated. I don't think Abe accounted for the MSM bumper when he built my exhaust and once I dropped the tailpipe side down that pushed the driver's side into the bracing. Not a big deal to resolve but was slightly annoying.

Yeah I was a complete buffoon with the ECU mount. It's been so long since I pulled the stock ECU that I was thinking the relay bracket was part of the dash mount. It's not and the Singular mount slides right in once removed (if your car even has the same relay bracket). Well worth the $70

Some new wheels and tires on a dirty car. Headed to Gateway Motorsports Park tomorrow for the first event since my little IHI fell apart.

I was out enjoying the nice weather and doing some tuning on my new Reverant built MS3 Basic when I picked up a large nail in the driver's rear tire. A lack of anywhere to pull off and my inability to diagnose the interesting handling aspects means the tire is completely shot now. So now I need some new street tires that can double duty as rain track tires.

Trying to decide between these options:
225 RS3 v2 - $545
205 Z2 Star Specs - $511
205 Kumho V720 - $451
205 595 RSR - $357

Primary concern is how well they handle standing water on a track. I liked the RS3s better than my current Rivals (on the track) and know they can handle water without issues. Based on past reading I have faith the Star Specs will handle wet weather just as well, if not better, and are slightly cheaper. The XS is not known for wet weather performance and I don't have a lot of faith the V720 will be much better, nice price though. Construction quality of the 595s concerns me even though reviews are mostly positive in dry and wet conditions. That price though.

Why do there have to be so many options in the super-awesome-street-tire category?

Lokiel 04-26-2015 07:38 PM

FWIW, my 205 Z2 Star Specs handle better in the wet than my near-new 225 Toyo R1Rs handled at the track. The Star Specs are my DD tyres and I'd much rather them on a wet track that the R1Rs.

Thanks for the info. Just ordered a set of Star Specs and they should be here Wednesday. Came close to ordering the RE71R, $70 rebate and likely better wet traction made them appealing. 7" tread width vs Star Specs 7.5" however was not. Now I'm really looking forward to having a wet trackday this year! Had no complaints about the RS3 on a wet track and these should be even better.

Installed some Xidas 1.5 weeks ago. Drove around on them a bit, mostly on full soft, with 800/500 springs. I am surprised at how well they absorb everything. Much less jarring than VMAXXXXXXX and yet much stiffer, in a good way.

So then I got the car aligned and corner weighted, today. And set them half way though the adjusters. Seriously impressed. Nice weather and day off work seemed better spent enjoying the car than tinkering, so I left them like that all afternoon. Xidas are awesome and I can't wait to get them on the track.

Happy with how the corner weighting turned out. We adjusted the left front 2 turns and nothing else. Connecting the sway bars added a total of 0lbs to each corner. Either I got lucky setting ride heights, or this car is super easy to setup.

The heaviest Miata in existence

My first fiberglass repair

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1433117933

Not counting overlap, 3 progressively larger layers up top and 2 underneath. I hope that's enough, the larger gaps could have used another layer or 2 I think but the resin was turning to gel so that will have to do.

Depending on how it looks after sanding and filler, will either spray can it black or I'll pick up a spray gun from HF and have some Titanium Gray mixed up.

YouTube, where else? This was probably the best video I found

Bought the 1qt kit from Advanced and it was way too much. The 1/2 pint would have been plenty. Although considering they were only a couple dollars difference after a $10 off coupon maybe it wasn't such a bad idea.

Assuming the repair actually holds up, fiberglass repair is incredibly easy.

midpack 07-23-2015 11:41 PM

It's rained non-stop through all of June and part of July before switching straight into St Louis' awesome hot and humid summer weather. This has made painting difficult. Finally had an evening of decently low, for us anyway, humidity and I got to lay down some primer. After 600 grit wet sanding it now looks like this

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-f...723_193531.jpg

Somewhere under this is a fiberglass repair

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T...723_193543.jpg

midpack 08-25-2015 11:47 PM

Got sick of the hood prop falling out with every wind gust at the track, marring the fender and hood paint as it comes slamming down. So I fixed that with an IL Motorsports hood lift kit. They probably weigh twice what the stock prop does, and is totally worth the penalty.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j...825_220644.jpg

Last trackday I watched as tech grabbed the top of my seat and wiggled it around a bit. Never noticed how much it moved before. He didn't say anything but it concerned me. So I added a pair of back braces from I/O Port. Now the whole car moves when you grab the seat anywhere. Passenger side got one as well.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-V...825_220803.jpg

And I finally "finished" the hardtop repair. In retrospect I should have just taken it to Maco after doing the prep work. As it turns out, my aerosol can painting skills are a little lacking. Paint job is far from perfect with dust and other crap in the base and clear coats, a slight zebra effect, almost no paint on the leading edge, and a giant run in both base and clear above the driver's window. Wet sanded with 1500 after the clear dried and that scuffed it all up, a light polish by hand helped but it definitely needs some 2000/2500 and a powered buffer to get a decent shine out of it. Too cheap to buy a HF buffer for this so not sure if that will ever get done. Either way, I'm still happy with how it came out and my total costs. All together I'm only at $350-400 for the top

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k...825_220738.jpg

The above has all taken place the last month or 2. Last night I went to Home Depot Racing and picked up some supplies for the latest project. Initial plans for the side mounts won't work out, a couple oil cooler lines are in the way, so another trip is in order to finish it up. Ok, who am I kidding, more like 2-3 more trips.

Brakes are back together with Dynapro + PFC01 up front and M-Tuned bracket + sport caliper/rotor + PFC11 in the rear. These pads have much better street manners than DTC60s, so much grip even when cold. Can't wait to try them on the track.

So long since any updates, and barely anything done.

Anyone near grid for the HPDE4 sessions at Road Atlanta last Dec can attest that my car burns oil at idle. That was a lovely discovery Saturday morning. Fortunately I made it through the weekend without any other issues, and it only happened at idle so oil consumption was minimal. Car sat all winter without doing anything to fix it.

Thought it was my crappy, kinked, oil drain line. So I drilled the pan and built a better line.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1459810809

Still burns oil at idle. Fuck.

So I pulled some parts off.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1459810809

You can see an AWR mount, that was installed just before Road Atlanta, hiding below. The car is officially annoying at idle now. Must mean it's an actual race car.

No signs of any oil leaks pre-turbo so the CHRA is being sent to ATP for an exchange. Added a some reference marks so I remember how to clock it.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1459810809

Abe's awesome work is still awesome. White Lightning coating is not so white anymore, heat makes it turn brown. The gradient is much more noticeable in person than with crappy phone pics. Since I didn't coat it for looks, this does not bother me one bit. Slight exhaust leak somewhere between cold and hot, maybe I will have the turbo and manifold surfaces flattened while the turbo is out, but probably not.

ATP service is great. 2 day turnaround for a CHRA exchange and I got this pretty thing back.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1467163665

While bolting the turbo up to the manifold I managed to damage the White Lightning coating from where it was getting banged / rubbed against the workbench. There is still a layer of coating, only less thick in a few small spots now. Oh well.

After installation I ended up with an exhaust leak on each side of the straight pipe. One of the gaskets didn't look all that great so Abe sent me some new ones. Still leaks at both connections. I'll replace the clamps next.

Shortly after the CHRA came back, we put in an offer on a new house. After living in a townhouse with a low ceiling garage for 12 years, having a yard, driveway, and better garage is fucking awesome. Seriously, I learned to duck for the garage opener years ago, guests however were not as accustomed and frequently banged their head on it. At least the opener I put in a couple years ago is plastic vs the metal one I learned to avoid. My car has a new home and I can finally hang this bitching Mazdaspeed sign somewhere.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1467163665

I haven't been on the track since December and have maybe a tank of gas through the car since. That needs remedied.

Hopefully Abe will fix it.

EO2K 10-09-2016 11:33 PM

I used high temp header paint and made my White Lightning nice and black, helps hide that brown you were talking about. How thick is the coating on there?

Sucks about the crack. Didn't someone else also have one split in that same spot not long ago?

aidandj 10-09-2016 11:46 PM

Faes cracked there.

midpack 10-10-2016 01:24 AM

Color really doesn't concern me. I coated it for temp control, not looks. form > function.
Another piece flaked off on #3 where it joins with #2, doesn't look like a crack but I'll check once it's off.
There is no way parts store header paint will survive what I do to this thing.

I'm not searching through Fae's massive thread. Got any links to his cracked manifold?

On the bright side of things. This happened on a 1:25.82 lap. For comparison, Emilio had a 1:25.28 in Crusher 4 years ago.

aidandj 10-10-2016 01:35 AM

I don't want to search through his thread either. But he was also hanging a giant Borgwarner s366 off of it.

Pretty normal crack, it's at the heat affected zone. And handles a lot of weight.

midpack 11-24-2016 08:55 PM

Been busy building a shed and not working on the car. Shed is nearing completion, and with the time change daylight is scarce so I've finally been able to work on the car.

Out with the old, cracked, straight vain rotors, and in with curved goodness. Wilwood Spec 37. Safety wire because racecar.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...de5a9b0c3f.jpg

That was technically from a while back, same night I pulled the manifold off. It was cracked 3/4 of the way around. Abe added some molten metal and gussets and now hopefully it will not crack.
