Ouch... was that the stock IHI turbo?

It's expensive, especially once you upgrade to a 3" exhaust. But oh so easy and complete. FM kit will install in an afternoon, diy will take me weeks trying to find and get parts. It's the oil and water lines I really want, I think those will be the hardest to source. What turbo are you going with?
Thanks! The goal is 230-240hp stock motor. I can only seem to flow about 210 on the stock ihi. Kinda expensive for a 20-30hp increase, but I figure the 2560 will give some better top end and be under less stress than maxing out the little IHI. I was considering just going to BNR and having the stocker rebuilt and upgraded to a small 16g, that way I can retain my piping and stuff, put for the $1300 they want, mineswell just do the whole thing. What do you run for a front swaybar? Do you run one in the rear? |
Yes, stock IHI turbo.
Wow we really are in the same boat and are thinking the same things. Either we're both crazy or we're on to something. Savington recommends the 2871 vs 2860 but I don't know if that changes vs the GTX. It gives yuou a more headroom with minimal loss of spool. Front sway: FM Rear sway: stock MSM Running the original version of FM VMaxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Xida upgrade funds have been redirected to a new turbo setup |
Did the tip of the shaft break? Happen at Hallett?

Yep, end of my 3rd session Friday morning of Miatas@Hallett.
Shaft broke on the exhaust side. There's just a tiny bit of shaft play now https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411527509 I think this turbine is totally salvageable, just need a file and bit of JB Weld https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411527509 |
Fun read up until the broken turbo. Any idea what caused it?
|
Wow. That's serious carnage. Sucks!

Ordered some parts today.

Did someone drop some cheddar on ARTech?
|
That I did. Trying to decide if I want to wait 3 additional weeks to have it ceramic coated.

Installed some parts this weekend. Abe does some fantastic work, very impressed. Waiting on a few things to button it up, maybe next weekend it will be ready for a first start.
So much room around the turbo. Installation was a breeze. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418622072 I don't know how, but there is plenty of clearance around this big ass exhaust. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418622072 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418622072 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418622072 Lots of clearance everywhere...but here. The tip also get crushed slightly in transit, a lack of packaging no doubt contributed to the damage. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418622072 |

Hey that Turbo looks familiar ;)
Looks good. The tip on my Artech exhaust was bent from shipping as well. Looked almost exactly like that. I straightened it with a few good hits from a ball peen hammer. Attachment 238568 |

Abe offered to send an exhaust expander to fix the tip. That guy is seriously awesome.
I got pissed off and quit yesterday when I got to the oil drain. No way are the AN fittings going to fit, they run straight into the steering shaft. Not that it matters, I'd need some angled fittings anyway. Didn't realize just how short of a line I need. Here's a shot with the 1/2" NPT to AN10 fitting installed. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1419198520 |
Is that one v-band 90 piece to replace the axle-back with a turn down? And if so, what are you doing about the lack of hangers on the midpipe?

Thanks, I might give that a try. Integrated AN10 fitting on the flange would also give me a little more room.
I've got a 90* AN fitting for the feed and it doesn't fit with the drain pointed straight down. Garrett says the oil drain can be clocked up to 35* |
Subed for info. Good build man. Hope to be working on my MSM soon.

Do whatever you can to make some decent clearance between the exhaust and bumper, even if it means cutting up your bumper to achieve it - burnt rear bumpers look and smell nasty.
FM sells a nice set of urethane "long" hangers, I think they are a bit too long for my use. May pickup another set somewhere between stock and the FM long ones, it hangs a bit too low for my liking. After I get it running that is. Ordered a box of parts to redo the oil feed and drain lines. |
