Trackspeed Engineering's V8 Race Car Build

3 Attachment(s)
We are just getting moved into a new shop, and along with a few customer builds we are getting started on our Trackspeed Engineering V8 race car build. It's being built for use in Miata Challenge and SCCA ITE as well as some enduros once it has proven itself.

The donor tub:
Attachment 191940

Head start as it already had the back half of the cage when I picked it up, also can see we ripped out the entire interior:
Attachment 191941

Already motor-less and ready for clean up and transmission tunnel widening:
Attachment 191942

Work will really get started on it in the first couple weeks of January. Hoping to complete it by the end of February but we will see if we can meet that timeline with all the goodies this car is getting.

Some parts that are sitting and waiting. Lots of fittings in the boxes as well but not visible in this picture.
Attachment 191852

Also stripped down the chassis wiring to only the parts I'll need. New chassis wiring:

Remainder of wiring for the dumpster:

Looks like you need a ls1 nitrous kit.

TurboTim 01-03-2011 03:53 PM

With that dry sump you need are halfway ready for our Jesel's belt drive.

And this cause otherwise you can't stick a "good" valvetrain on an LS head. nevermind for a roadcourse engine in a miata chassis you'll be fine with typical stuff.

 We may have to borrow it (and return with a full bottle) for some drag strip experimentation.

More info? And info on anything you guys do for LSx motors. Not looking for huge power to start out, but will be upgrading down the road of course.

It has been and will continue to be a busy week moving into the new shop but I snagged some pictures of the cage work for you guys.

Good way to keep from busting timing chains.....

scottyd 01-05-2011 10:36 PM

This thing better be faster than that other V8...

shuiend 01-05-2011 11:06 PM

What year was the tube and did you throw the wiring harness away yet?

I like.

Really nice red NA in the background, who's is it?;)

The LS has the oil pump on the crank, in front of the crank sprocket. Therefore installing a belt drive requires an external oil pump on these engines, as well as machining the front of the block to accept the "cover", basically the plate that seals off the front of the engine. You'd also need to figure out something for the CAS on those engines that have it built into the cam sprocket. I would only use a belt if you plan on running aggressive camshaft lobes and/or spring pressures (an aggressive valvetrain overall), or if you plan on running high rpm for extended periods, or if you require easy cam timing adjustment. Or if you want to be a Hustler.

Jesel also makes the rest of the valvetrain stuffs: solid roller lifters in two pricing groups (one piece & tool steel, in dog bone, tie bar, and keyway styles) and shaft rocker arm kits from Sportsman LS1 direct bolt on to ProSeries long pivot rocker mill-everything-off-and-start-over 1" valve lift 1.650 spring setup for the drag guys running big cube LS based blocks. We also have pushrods and I've done a few cam cores for LS engines.

:werd: But that shouldn't be an issue if running OEM style springs/cams and typical RPM ranges. IMHO a simple crate/warranteed LS3 or an engine build with similar components (but with forged internals) would be ideal for a track car that you don't want to necessarily rebuild yearly.

chpmnsws6 01-06-2011 10:49 AM

The chain busting was just one more reason I went little with the ASA cam, and lighter with LS6 valves and Ti retainers.

Are you fabbing up a bracket for the oil pump and switching to a cogs setup on the main drive? That thing makes my special parts light up...... :D

dgmorr 01-06-2011 11:23 AM

I thought most racing bodies did not allow the S bend for the door bars? Sweet build either way.

Just use an LS7 or LS9 they are already set up for dry sump, Also Ive been in the LS game for a while and have only heard of a timing chain problem once, when a guy used a very high mile stock set when he changed his cam, but no problems with after-market sets. What I do hear of quite frequently is the lifters not holding up to the big cams and on earlier LS motors the push rod would fail with a big cam as well. The main and cheapest fix people have been doing for this is to get a set of LS7 lifters and some after market push rods, no problems at 8k+ and a big cam.

Gotpsi? 01-06-2011 11:27 AM

O ya forgot to mention, if you need a mock up block I have one in my garage w/heads if you want it for your build pm me and Ill bring it to the miata challenge at buttonwillow.

If you want to provide me with one, sure but I'm not dropping 10k on a motor. Also the ls7 "dry sump" doesn't work so well either way.

Hopefully I get ahold of my motor before then but I'll keep it in mind and let you know. Thanks for the offer.

Never heard that. I know for a fact it is not true for club racing (SCCA and NASA) and a quick search of FIA cage rules didn't find anything about it either.

hustler 01-06-2011 05:48 PM

Old school drag racer tech said no curved door bars. This was before the internet though.

That fuel filter has a stainless element?

Oh sorry I didn't introduce myself...

I did a ls1 swap 6 years ago. And built the first e85 powered supra using a flex fuel sensor all tuned and controlled by the ecu. If there's 2 things I know it's ls1s and e85. I'm just trying save the guy trouble in 99 gm had no reason to use a stainless element as e85 wasn't even around. If it's paper have fun with clogged injectors. I searched the Internet n ls1tech but couldn't come up with anything. Good day.

I did a LS2 swap 7 years ago (yes before they even came out) and the first E100 supra (but not controlled by an ECU, it was carb'ed), plus my panties don't bunch up.

A smart first post would be:

Does that fuel filter have a stainless element? I am just trying to save the guy trouble as I have experience with E85 and LS1 engines. For example if you're running a 3rd Gen LS, GM had no reason to use a stainless element as e85 wasn't even around back in '99. Cheerio & good day!

Faeflora 01-12-2011 12:12 PM

Break it down bitch, let me see you back it up

Andrew, is this car going to get driven by a hot shoe? What times ie under spec record, are you expecting.

Please stay on topic.

Be a witness, as I excersize my exorcism
The evil that lurks within the sin, the terrorism
Possessed by evil spirits, voices from the dead
I come forth with gravediggaz in a head full of dread
I've been examined ever since I was seamen
They took a sonogram and seen the image of a demon
At birth the nurses surrounded my with needles
and drugged me all up with the deseases of evil
Grew up in hell, now I dwell, in an Islamic Temple
I'm fighting a holy war in the mental
Look deep into my eyes, you'll see visions of death
Possessed by homicide is what I'm obsessed

No, but everything I was able to find said that people were not having any issues with this filter and e85. If you have first hand experience with this filter and e85 I'd like to hear about it. This also won't be running e85 initially, I'm just preparing for the future when the motor gets built.

Car will be driven by me. I'd like to think I'm pretty quick, race spec miata and am usually within a half second to second of pole. Most recent time I drove Savingtons car (after not having driven anything with power for over a year), in one session I was only a second off his best time of the day. I believe he had the fastest lap of the day and mine was second fastest. The goal is to have this be faster than his turbo car, but that is obviously not a simple goal to achieve.

mx5autoxer 01-13-2011 12:10 PM

Sweet build. I kinda wish I did a V8 instead of a turbo. Not enough $$$ though. What is the initial power goal and what do you think you'll eventually get to?

jacob300zx 01-13-2011 12:29 PM

No idea you were driving it, this should be interesting :)

Once it's dialed in it should be every bit as fast as my black car is.

crashnscar 01-25-2011 01:27 AM

Picked up a couple goodies that should help get this build going.

Also think I have decided on Honda Competition White for the color, with an orange cage, wheels, wing endplates, etc.

And a quick picture of the new shop, as of 2 weeks ago:

Shift linkage with heims is where it's at. Just succumbed to the limp lever in P-car. Old antiquated ball and cup are going to be updated to the "RS" Golden Rod. Same as above... ;)

Faeflora 01-25-2011 10:43 AM

how much is one of those?

Machismo 01-25-2011 11:12 AM

I don't know, but same size and external shape as my old 3-speed peanut in the '61 Chevy Stepside I had. The bearings alone were $600 at the time 10 yrs. ago. :crx:
