Ze Potato Build

Hi, my name is Nick. I ride bicycles and have a weird thing for hairdresser cars. I tend to avoid making build threads for anything, but I guess I should introduce myself a bit better, show ya'll my 94, and take you through a brief blast to where I am now. Hopefully I won't bore any of you.

HISTORY
Wanted a miata since I was a kid when the neighbor down the street had a sweet 96 m-edition. Fast forward a few years to when I got my license, one car that always caught my attention when I drove: Miatas. Fast forward a few more years to when the transmission in my Ford Escape blew up and I had a choice. $3k for a new transmission, or $3k for a Miata. Guess which one I chose!

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...103_110050.jpg

This is the day I bought her. November 2013. Named it Potato. Some crazy hippy lady (unfortunately, she was a hair-stylist.) wanted to move to some communist farm collective so she was selling off her worldly possesions. $3200 87k miles, 94, hardtop included, soft-top in great shape, and a little sooty on the tailpipe, and HLA clatter.

Went to work sorting the maintenance out. Looked like a grease-monkey special sorting through all the paperwork I got from her. At least she regularly changed the oil, but every 7k miles. Anyhoo, did some things to the car to protect my life.

1) Rollbar HDHCDDHTOMGBBQ
2) Door bars
3) 15x8 Konig Flat-outs wrapped in DZ102 tires.
4) Lincoln Log's old Tein Monoflex Coilovers.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...3046355556.jpg

Now in clubroadster herra stance mode, I needed to adress the overwealming lack of oomph.

1) Roadstersport Exhaust (first time I've experienced v-bands. :eek5:)
2) Raceland Header (yea... still was a member of clubroadster then.)
3) Exhintake mod

I thought It would be glorious; it wasn't. Installing the Exhintake I had to do do timing, so I did WP, T-belt, and all that jazz. Ended up 1-tooth off on the crank. Car had NO power. This freaked me out enough to investigate deeper. I ended up finding the timing mistake, but during search for answers did compression / leakdown test. I cried.

Dry : 110, 100, 70, 65
Wet : 115, 100, 85, 80

Leakdown : 10%, 15%, 35%, ALLOFIT%. :crx:

Well. New motor time. Felt discouraged, saddened, like I had a string of bad luck from blown transmission in Escape, to now motor in potato. Ballsack.

In my knee-jerk reaction state, bought a "rebuilt" motor off eBay. Fuck me. Don't ever do this. Seller took used engine, painted it, sold it. eGay's buyer protection policy states that the buyer is responsible for return shipping in the case of wrong product, wrong description, etc. So I would have been stuck with a $300 bill to frieght a motor back to him just to return it because he lied in the discription. Double ballsack.

I ended up keeping the motor (most expensive core ever....) and to venture down the path of building my first motor.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...515_130507.png

This is where I joined here. You guys actually know what the fuck is going on. Amazing. I searched, read, and researched building a motor. In the dark depths of this site lay beautiful knowledge.

MT.net ubiquitous 'built motor', but without a turbo. Crucify me. :dealwithit:
84mm wiseco 10.5:1 potato poppers (maybe turbo with e85 down the road)
Manley rods
ACL bearings
ARP main and head studs
MSM BP4w head with BP5a cam
Supertech light doubles
Manley +1 intake/exhaust valves
Flattop IM
Fidanza FW
Polished crank and balanced rotating assembly

Well that was fun. Learned a lot, tried to noob as little as I could. Buuuuuut a 6-speed 'fell' into my hands too. Dude listed transmission as "1999 Miata 10th AE 5-speed transmission $300". Intrigued to know what was up, I emailed and asked for a picture. Picture came forth showing a 6-speed, I made payment, I recieved tracking number.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...116_112237.jpg

With my old engine limping along, and winter upon me. I parts hoarded.

Bought :

-The "Soviet Special" fuel system (return-based fuellab AFPR, Mocal AN everything, FM(M-tuned) fuel rail, gt500 EV14 injectors, black-sausage fire-sleeve). Thanks EO2K and Nigelt!
-APR Supermiata GTC-200 off lincoln logs
-Supermiata Racing Beat hollow sway (the big and thick one :giggle:) and MSM rear sway/endlink package.
- Mishimoto rad / m-tuned re-route (shoulda bought crossflow )
- Supermiata 11.75 bbk and rx7 FC t2 11" rear brake conversion, and wilwood tandem MC.
-TSE oil cooler kit
-RS3v2 tires
-Bunch of other random bushings, awr mounts, interior bits, etc.

PRESENT DAY
And that brings us to this past monday. Motor swappage!

Everyone's seen a motor-swap, but this was my first... and my first built motor... so :dealwithit:

Aaaaaand yea. Here I am breaking it in and loving every second. I would guestimate power to be in the realm of ~150hp based on what others have built, high elevation, and shitty 91 octane go-juice, but it's a revvy, quick blast to drive! Now I am in abject poverty, but ready for summer!

I wish I could individually thank all those who provided valuable knowledge throughout the build, but it's far too many to remember. Let me just say I'm very greateful for such an intelligent, and dedicated community of people that helped me turn my fail-parade into where I'm at today!

Nice. Pics are hosted somewhere? Host sites are blocked at work so no lunch break lookee for me :(

Sounds like you have a fairly nice build going now. Any thoughts of putting a potato IN your potato?

All hosted on my dropbox. Should probably photobucket them as curly commands.

Needs more MKTurbo boosting power. Would be nice to see what the T3 can put down at 20+psi.

I resize all hosted images to 1042x768. Displays on desktop and phone just fine. Even with a 21" monitor and good connection, this page takes 15s to load.

Excellent use of passenger seat in pick up.

Chooofoojoo 05-29-2015 12:55 PM

Re-sized for viewing pleasure! They became oddly pixelated at 1042x768, but were fine at 1714x964. Hopefully they're not too large still.

21" monitor. C'mon Emilio! Surround 27" for 7668x1140p!

We shall talk. Maybe this upcoming winter. I'm mostly nervous about CR mixing with boost, and general lack of close e85. :vash:

Car nor myself has ever been on track. I'll see what I can do. Being 6'4" tall with foamectomy'd stock seats = broomstick test fail. I get a head massage from the hardtop every time I drive :giggle:

Updates!!! ish.

Good news :
-Got an alignment. Hello zero toe!
-Tuning is coming along... ish.
-Finally have time to install front BBK tomorrow!

Bad new :
-Missing an apparently rare parking cable bracket off my rear RX7 calipers that has prevented me from installing rear BBK.
-Tach is bouncing like crazy around 3k rpm. Coincides with logged missfires too. I've cleaned/checked all the engine-bay grounds. Might need to add additional ones and/or begin the LS truck coil conversion.
-Tried to input correct dead-times and voltage offsets for GT500 injectors, completely fubar'd my tune. Been attempting to slowly work my injector dead-times down from the 1.3ms to the .65ms incrementally, re-mapping my VE table as it leans out. SUPER time consuming.
- Can't get motor to closed-loop idle for shit. PID settings are shockingly far off. P=80, I=120, D=200. I went through the tutorial on PID tuning and the D portion is wacky.

The problem with my idle is seemingly weird to me. The rotating mass has been lightened so much that rpms plummet when the clutch is depressed and the motor has a very hard time catching it at around 1000-1100 rpm. Need more tuning/learning on the systems at play.
I need to work my dead-times down to where they need to be, then I'll tackle fixing this idle shenanigans.

I'll get this figured. Input/tips welcome.

All in all still stoked on life that I built a motor.

Time for an UPGREYEDD!

Damn this car is fun. But everyone... and I mean everyone wants to have more power right? TurboTim to the rescue :

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438625870

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438625870

Tim's old Absurdflow top mount ps/ac compatible hilariously un-equal length mani/dp of awesomeness. :giggle:

Turbo-Time Parts list :
- Absurdflow mani/dp- 2560r (also have a 3071r)
- FM 'new style' intercooler with silicone pipes + random BOV
- Trackspeed COP conversion - also have GM coils available too
- Skunk2 throttle body - Will port Square top to match
- DIY ebc solenoid + adjustable wastegate actuator (low spring + EBC = win?)
- Some form of a new clutch. Not really sure what mine can hold, but i doubt it will take more than 175 lb/ft. Will likely buy a FM2 if I cannot wait for the Supermiata clutches to resurface.
- Some haggard 3" exhaust until I can decide what I want and order a proper one.

My biggest concern moving forward is detonation. I'm running 10.5:1 CR and would ideally like to be able to run on pump gas as e85 is not plentiful around the Denver metro area. Still need to figure out oil feed too. Need to get a Tee off the oil pressure sender and looooong oil feed line.

This should be fun. I hope. Criticize, instruct, hoon as necessary. With any luck I won't :eggplant:

EO2K 08-03-2015 02:24 PM

I absolutely love it when this thread gets updated.

Have an Exhaust Now. More pics forthcoming. But it starts with "Ar", ends with "tech", is 3", stainless, and awesome. One more example to add to the tradition of fine exhaust pieces by Abe.

Current roadmap :
1) Obtain new daily driver (Winter is coming....)
2) Transport entire horde of parts from my bike shop to garage workspace.
3) ME BOOSTA
4) ??
5) Profit.

I've ran through this install 1000x in my head and I'm pretty sure I have every little fitting, hose, clamp and doohicky needed to make this a relatively simple endeavor. Due to needing to replace the clutch, game-plan is to pull engine. This will make drilling for oil drain and such much easier. Also allow me to fix small oil leak that cropped up on the front of the pan since engine build.

Very Excite.

Chooofoojoo 10-27-2015 04:20 PM

Welp just like the leaves in sunny fall Colorado, plans change colors direction....

EFR 6758. :giggle:

Andrew gave a wonderful breakdown of turbo choices in his Turbo Kit's thread, more or less concluding that one should only look at the 6758 if you power goals are 350. I am at 5400ft of elevation, so I'll be operating at a higher pressure-ratio then all you sea-level folk. I opted for the larger 6758 because:

That being said, I want 350hp.... or realistically whatever my Det limit is on this engine. If that happens to be 325: :hatecat: ; 375: :likecat:

Will be positing pictures of Turbo when it arrives in a few weeks.

This car is getting ridiculous.

Revisded To-Do List :
-Stop buying shit
-Install the mound of parts I already have.
-Enjoy the car.
-Avoid :eggplant: along the way

Good News :
I have ordered an AEM Meth kit. Mainly as an added Hope-Shit-Don't-Blow-Up security measure. Plan is to not need meth, but to have it spray low cc/min just to add an addition defense against detention. Also ordered a DW300 so that my fuel system is fully dialed.

Also saving for a backup built LOW COMP bottom end. Because lord knows 10.5:1 + EFR6758 + no e85 = Statistically significant likelihood of sadness.

Bad News :
Still working on finding a winter daily driver. In hindsight I shouldn't have acquired an EFR, but instead used that money to secure more snow-worthy transportation. Until such secondary car has been acquired I won't be able to turbo quite yet. Knowing myself, during such time I will likely buy either : More bicycles, or More unnecessary Miata parts instead of practical things. :eggplant:

Took some time to bolt things together with some temp studs and nuts until Savington gets those 8mm inconel bits available.

Next week we're goin in'.

I have garage space reserved for the next month or so. Also will be getting emissions tested monday, then promptly back to the garage to get the positive pressure party going.

Have a laundry list of to-do's while I'm in there, so hopefully working on it two or three days a week I'll have it knocked out over the course of a month. Will try to photo document this process as best as possible.

Did you ask him or is this based on what you are seeing on the website?

That looks ridiculous on that manifold, me likey! :D :bigtu:

Chooofoojoo 12-18-2015 06:05 PM

Buttery smooth crew checking-in. :likecat:

I haven't' emailed him directly about it. In his EFR thread he said that it could be another month or so. This whole contraption is a top mount with lots of v-bands so I'm not worried about swapping studs down the road. I need to break in a new FM2 clutch and work my way up to big boost anyways, so these studs should suffice.

This turbo is massive to be hanging off the side of the head. Pretty damn excited though. Hope All my mental prep will end up with a pretty dialed and clean install. Less ghetto, more better.

Also now in complete abject poverty. dcamp told me no more nice things until I get ALL of my current stuff installed. :bowrofl: :likecat:

Proof that I'm doing something.

pulling a motor in ~20f degree non-heated garage is not my favorite thing ever. Space-heater army checking in.

Buuuuut for the real question : Should I PS delete while I'm in there? I like having power steering, but the idea of not having it in the way of intercooler routing is very very tempting. Due to time-frame I likely would not be able to do it properly including welding the pinion. IF I were to do it, it would be looped-lines.

Girz0r 12-29-2015 06:52 PM

I wouldn't worry about it till it's done right :bigtu: If you know it'll go back in and reconnect and 'work' without issue...

When are you planning on intercooler routing? I would suspect this is an entire process within itself!

Chooofoojoo 12-29-2015 07:05 PM

Yea. I have all the Miataroadster PS delete plugs, and new poly bushings. I may just delete it proper and be done with it. Ugh. the "while I'm in there" list is looooong at this point.

As far as intercooler I hit the easy button. Went with the FM silicone pipes. Since my mani puts the turbo much higher and a bit forward of where the FMII sits, I ended up getting another 45* coupler and a 2" joiner. For the intercooler I have a newer-style FM unit.. at least until I pull the trigger on a treadstone or Fab9 stage 2. We'll see how IATs are up here at dry elevation.

The previous owner of my friend's car just cut the hardlines and left them open for that.power steering delete. Other than spewing fluid everywhere (how is there still some in the rack!) It has worked fine for the 4k miles my friend has owned the car. Doing it right is on the list to get to though.

Well... Day 4 into swap (leisurely pace).

Things that are good :

-Pulling motor is an afternoon affair now. Not a single bolt/bracket/shenanigan gave me grief on the way out.
- Mocked up turbo on motor. Everything looks like it clears. This 6758 is a bit bigger than the 2560 that Tim ran on it prior. Hope the WG actuator clears the hood.
-It's warmer today.

Things that are not so good :
-Found out that intake cam seal was leaking like a bitch. Everything was hidden behind timing plate and engine covers. Front of engine is FILTHY.
-Not entirely sure intercooler silicone piping will line up after looking closer. This damn EFR is a long sonnofabitch.
-Water mixing manifold was leaking from prior weld of the small-line-nipple. Need to see if I can figure out where it was leaking from. Maybe just drill it and tap a 1/8npt plug.

In other news, WTF is up with green-tipped spark plugs? 1 is on the left, and ignore #3's bent strap. Dropped that one off the bench... Some quick google-fu and it seems like that's from running too hot of a heat range? Figured the NGK 6 range would be ok for Naturally aspirated. Compression and leak-down are awesome, so no headgasket issues, never consumed oil or coolant. Any spark-plug reading masters out there that want to clue me in?

How long were those plugs in for? Couldn't have been all that long, there's no corona. Copper plugs, I assume with a stock ignition system?

Electrode looks lean-y, but do you have sooty deposits on the ring around the porcelain? That area looks dirty.

Chooofoojoo 01-02-2016 06:52 PM

Plugs were in for ~7 months and about 8k street miles. 4k of those miles on stock coils, 4k on TSE COP conversion. Lots of high revs, and load. Mountain passes are a favorite of mine. Afr's were 15.3-15.5 in cruise 14-14.2 in moderate load 13.8-14 around peak torque in load. Right before removing engine car was driven VERY hard. Burn outs, launches, general hooning, acting lile I was 16 again .

Oh well. Ill see how the new plugs do during clutch break in/low boost time. Ill pull them before turning things up.

Made something at work today

I plan on doing a soviet-style everything heater-hose return. The hard-pipe ends up contacting my manifold and I just don't want to deal with it. I ended up cobbling this together at work today.

-OG '94 front coolant inlet piece removed when m-tuned re-route installed
-3/8 npt to 5/8 barb
-epoxy

I think with the angles I will be able to use the original upper radiator hose to go from the radiator to the inlet. I hope. I haven't gotten to mock it up on the car since my motor is still sitting on the floor.

Looking at in in the pictures... doubt it will fit. But will try nonetheless. For science.

If this doesn't end up working, a AN10 bung will be welded onto my old mixing manifold and I'll just run a flipped mixing manifold like everyone else.

More Happenings

-Depowered rack via Miataroadster plugs and Superpro poly bushings.
-No one wanted to weld my pinion today. Called a bunch of places. One shop would do it... but for $125

-Poly bushings in Diff. Soviet method FTW! (Harbor freight ball-joint bits + 3-jaw puller).

-Assembled Manifold on motor to see where I need to drill for oil. Thursday I drill. (been saying that for two weeks now :giggle:) Also, my engine stand broke. Good thing my engine wasn't on it. So that's why it's ghetto-ville with my motor sitting on 2x4s and closed cell foam.

Positive Pressure Party Continues:party:

Had a few hours today before the snow rolled in to work on the assembly. Working at a rather slow pace, but making sure everything is as good as I can make it.

Today's list of festivities :
-Drilled and tapped and jb-welded oil pan.
-Made up a handful of AN-lines
-Pretty sure I caught a cold. Been extra stuffy all day.

Oil pan Drill-n-Tap :
Swear to god there's JB weld on it. Slathered up the first 4-6 threads of the fitting and she went in like a champ. Tapped to juuust the right depth. The MBSP is a close 4-5mm away from the inside of the pan. Think I did alright.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1452132612

AN Line Time
Made a handful of lines today that I could mock up on the engine. Made the Oil drain and the Coolant feed line. Because the EFR hangs pretty far out there, pretty much on top of the shelf my oil drain isn't the perfect straight plumb to the pan. Also have to clear the steering column as well. Pretty sure it worked out successful. The coolant feed goes from a spare 1/8npt fitting on the back of the m-tuned re-route, snakes along the Valve cover with some nifty cushion clamps, and drops into the EFR. Hindsight I may want to get a 30* fitting at the CHRA because I'm not super stoked on how close the line is to the collector of the manifold. Also mocked up the FM 'round the back oil feed. All in all my Motor looks like a squid with all the lines loosely sitting everywhere. Oh well, progress! :likecat:

ALL LINES Consist of Setrab or Aeroquip fittings mated to Setrab/Mocal braided stainless AN10/6 line with Black Sausage Crew firesleeve keeping the cozy.

Progress, Hiccups, and Facepalms

Good Things :

-Resealed front of 6-speed, it had been leaking through one of the front-plate bolt holes. Ended up doing a new input shaft seal, cleaned and re-did the RTV gasket. Fresh Amsoil MTG.

- FM2 clutch install with man throw out bearing.

- Bolted shit together

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1452638101

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1452638101

Hiccups :

- Need '99+ axles. Forgot to tell Abe that I have Ye-old-school (yet still perfectly functional and excellent feeling) 2-piece axles. Soooo yea. No way in hell they'll clear that portion of the exhaust.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1452638101

Utter Failures :

Turbo no hit chassis??
-Finally got the motor dropped in, and lo and behold my compressor housing hits the shock-tower. The 6758 is waaay bigger of a turbo then Tim ever ran on this manifold. Should have seen this coming. Hate myself. Ughhh. Clocking the cover all stupid allows it to clear, but that'll throw off all my intercooler routing plans.

May just 'dimple' that part of the shock tower in. We'll see.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1452638101

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1452638101

Aaaaaaannnnddd I need to trim the 'shelf'. Didn't think I needed to do this, but I guess When Tim made this setup his shelf was pre-trimmed. Not stokked. Need to rip the motor out again to get access to that area to do this. Balls. :vash:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1452638101

In summary : :eggplant::loser::sad2:
