1988 Mazda 323 GTX - $$4000

Status: Clean Title I have a 1988 Mazda 323 GTX for sale, in USA - Illinois. Engine Size: 1.6l Asking price is $$4000 So I need to get back to building my Miotta and having another Fun car around isn't helping. As much as I know I'll regret this... I feel I'm making the right decision. I am basically selling this car: http://www.angrywolf.com/gtx/gtx.htm BUT with a rebuilt motor that has perfect oil pressure (mazdaspeed HV oil pump) No more 16" Motegi (boat anchors) Text from that site about the car The chassis has 130k miles on it. The engine was rebuilt 10k miles ago with factory components (crank is .010" under on all journals, pistons .010" over) except for the ARP head studs and Cometic head gasket. The transmission is a JDM unit with lower miles. The turbo was rebuilt six hundred miles ago by Majestic and functioning perfectly. The car has the following upgrades; Centerforce clutch Mazdaspeed LSD in rear Corksport shifter bushings Ground Control coil overs Koni adjustable shocks Cusco adjustable camber plates - front and rear Cusco rear strut tower bar Cusco front and rear sway bars Cusco front lower a-arm brace Braided steel clutch and brake lines Custom cold air intake Custom exhaust Reich computer Poly bushings all around Mazdaspeed engine mounts Motegi wheels with Toyo tires Battery relocated to trunk The suspension is set up perfectly and the car is very tight. The custom exhaust was built with mature drivers in mind so it has a good sound - not a fart can. The car has some rust as you would expect from a twenty year old Japanese car thats been used - all four corners around the wheel wells have some rust and there is some in the pan in the foot well. The real problem is that the oil pressure has been dropping and I'm sure that all the engine bearings will need to be replaced. Pressure currently falls to 20lbs at cruising speed when warm. Probably the oil pump will need to be replaced as well (a high volume factory unit made for the rally cars is $180 and still available). Another option is to simply drop in a 1.6 Miata engine (it's about drop in simple). If you want to go the Miata engine route, I know where there is a perfect one for $700 with only 10k on it. Front lip included with sale Upgraded bov/bypass valve Fresh fluids, Delvac for engine, Amsoil for trans/center diff and diff. Ready to drive, I'd honestly trust it to daily drive. Despite its "age". I don't drive it much, but when I have, its been driven all over the Chicago area. Will include an ENTIRE extra 323 GTX drivetrain. Stock motor/trans, rebuilt center diff. Spindles w/brakes. Stock axles. Stock open rear diff. Stock ECU. Stock under engine metal splash/bash trays. Digital gauge cluster. Few other things I can't remember.) Will also include the Lip (it is NEW) pictured here: http://323gtx.homestead.com/files/spoiler.jpg Will also include a red hatch that has the OEM wings on it and wiper unit. Could paint it and install, or just swap wings onto the base 323 hatch on the car. Was on there from previous owners for lighter autox use. Current wheels are the ones in the snowy picture. With Michelin (i think) snow tires. I have another set of wheels as an option, mesh style with old tires that I can't confirm the condition of honestly. Feel free to ask about anything on it and I'll answer up here. |
How bad is the rust?
|
It is mainly hidden from view rust. Under the floor pan, hole through drivers floor by jack point. I didn't use the jackpoints on the sides due to it.
It was something I would have eventually addressed though, but it doesn't prevent any use of the car and is out of sight. Just as described in the angrywolf website details. |
sure wish I was in a good spot to take this off your hands!
GLWS man! |
Hey Dave,
I see you on GRM forum all the time....I guess you finally understand the motto "the answer is always a Miata" :) |

Oh man. This makes me a sad panda :( I was excited to have another turbo miata guy (well, former turbo miata guy) in the GTX crowd. Hopefully brain buys it and it will be an even trade =P
Let it be known that finding a GTX that isn't immediately in need of suspension work is a HUGE plus. That alone makes this car worth it big time. Rear shocks for that car are nearly impossible to find and if its got koni's you can always rebuild them. By the sounds of it, this car is set up very well and would be a very FAST autoxer. GLWS! |
Yah, it has Uber rare unobtainable Konis for the car. Plus if bought with the spares... it has the almost equally rare Tokico Dirtas.

I can vouch for this car, it is really clean...I wish I had the extra cash laying around Dave, glws
|
For people mulling it over. As stated seperate spares from car, I'm willing to reduce price by not selling the spare drive train with it.
|
For reference... I'm not 100% firm on price. Spares and such can also be taken out of the package for a decent price drop.
|
buy this, own part of awesome mazda history.
|
What type of deal are people looking for on this? Kind of surprised at the lack of interest :(
|
I'd want it, but my wife thinks it would be silly of me to sell my cheap ass POS DD thats model year 2000 for another cheap ass pos DD that's a model year '88 :giggle:
