Then speak your mind. What is is the problem you have with this thread? Are you suggesting we give religion a chance?

Deal. I'll give them a chance, if they give me back the years of progress lost during the christian dark ages.

I haven't suggested anything of the sort. It was just a comment regarding the tone of the thread.

If you're really that fussy about it, then do something slightly more serious than a half-baked circle jerk of each others' anti-religious rants.

Your not afraid to argue with others in the rest of the political section, so why wont you voice your opinions here? It's only a circle jerk b/c nobody will argue with us, or even propose a different philosophy.

The only person fussy is you. Read what you've written. You're complaining about the tone of this thread for reasons you won't give.

Organized religion is putrid, disgusting and vial. They deserve absolutely zero government funding and the pope should be arrested for crimes against humanity.

Oh, I thought comparing it to a freshman philosophy class was pretty clear.

But by all means, continue. I'm not complaining, just pointing it out.

Like Gearhead said, how can you seriously debate talking snakes and large genitals on donkeys?

What do you suggest? Give us some new talking points besides quoting religious texts.

Why bother? I should just start a thread and post statistics and videos about all the people killed under Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot.

Like I said, freshman philosophy class.

Honestly can't say I see the purpose in this setting. I've seen it before and participated in these kinds of internet "discussions"...it's lame and proves nothing.

LOL @ Bill O'reilly argument. I really hope you're joking because those murders combined don't even scrape the surface of religious killings.

Make sure you understand that killing for something is different. Lets play it your way. You say that Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot are prime examples that compare to what we are talking about. Except that they killed in their own names, not in the name of atheism or because they were atheists. In that logic, the number of killings in the name of my religion/god and by people who happen to be religious simply eclipses the numbers mentioned above.

Face it. The world would be better off if religion simply stopped existing. There has never been a bigger, more menacing bully in the history of this planet than organized religion.

Ooh, look, hooked me with bad argumentation!

That's inconsistent. You want to lump all theists together despite the fact that they believe in different gods, believe different things about those gods, and believe different things about the world, but all atheists must be considered individually?

Moreover, you claim without evidence that theists kill as a direct result of their theism (ignoring all the other factors involved in so-called religious wars), but atheists never, ever, ever kill as a result of their godless worldview?

Read that one more time and try again. And please, do not take words straight out of other people's mouths and their arguments. I can actually post the video you took the "I'll just post a thread about Mao, Stalin, blah blah blah.." Wanna talk about freshman philosophy?

If our world suddenly disappear, and civilization where to start anew, gravity, physics and mathematics would be rediscovered, but the talking snake would be no more.

So called religious wars? Really? Did the 9/11 hijackers fly into the twin towers because they where board? No, they thought their god would reward them for the act. Same with the Crusades.

That would be quite a read.

Funny story, I was reading up on religion in the different branches and oh damn, did I find some good stuff on the Marines, haha. You and I will have no down time since there will be theists to argue with all the time.

mgeoffriau, tell us some of your views on religion in the United States. What are your actual views on the world and how we got here?

Some random factoids that are going to get me in deep ---- with deeply religious folks....

Hell is a creation of the King James Version of the Bible. King James was rumored to behead a translator if he disagreed with their translation. The only references to "Hell", as far back as the Greek bible, were Hades and Gehenna. Hades has nothing whatsoever to do with hell, Gehenna was something that was a geographical location of the Hebrews (It was a place where they burned trash and corpses of the sick/diseased, among other things.)

"Virgin", 2000 years ago, meant unmarried woman. The story of Jesus is a story about premarital sex, taking responsibility for your mistakes, and forgiveness. It's not a story about immaculate conception (That's purely a creation of the catholic church), nor of the Catholic Church's change of the meaning of the word Virgin.

"The meek shall inherit the world" is a blatant twist in the actual words. In the proper translation, "Meek" has the same meaning as a well-trained warhorse where you could wave a torch in front of their eyes, and then under their belly, and the warhorse would not move no matter what (Remember, horses are absolutely terrified of fire). However, the actual meaning of "The Righteous who shall not back down no matter what shall inherit the world" had a seriously problematic issue within the Church, and the meaning was changed for the Church's benefit to give them a docile populace.

I'll be posting other great tidbits as I remember them.
