Apparently Steve Jobs Died

The interwebz are going nuts. Looks like Gizmodo crashed under the load.

WSJ article:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...210811910.html

I've never been a big fan of apple, but the man new how to stir up a frenzy about a product.

pusha 10-05-2011 07:56 PM

was just going to post this.

http://www.apple.com/

http://www.apple.com/stevejobs/

apparently this time he's really dead, took me a little while to check credible sources as I don't believe any of this shit since the last time it was reported back in 2008.

NA6C-Guy 10-05-2011 07:58 PM

Was also about to post this. Thanks 4chan for being the forefront of news.

I won't miss him. Maybe now his gimmick Apple products will go away, or at least slow down. A new retouched phone every year... that's too goddamn much.

icantthink4155 10-05-2011 08:01 PM

Never been a fan of apple stuff, but I had nothing against this guy.

Bryce 10-05-2011 08:01 PM

He's dead, Jim.

wayne_curr 10-05-2011 08:20 PM

Wow so people will finally stop buying shit they dont need.

Just kidding. He was a genius. Tough luck on the pancreatic cancer :(

Braineack 10-05-2011 08:40 PM

wow.

y8s 10-05-2011 08:52 PM

tough crowd, even for a dead guy.

apple stock remains stable in after-hours today.

Pitlab77 10-05-2011 08:53 PM

just saw this.

Not that I like the overpriced "limited" snob feel of apple, but his company did have some world culture changing products going back to apple PC with the Woz.

regards to his family.
Cancer is no joke.

FRT_Fun 10-05-2011 09:35 PM

Smart guy.

On one side I hate him for creating the douche bag apple laptop owners. But on the other hand I do enjoy my iPhone. Although I will most likely be switching to something different in 8 months when my contract is up.

TorqueZombie 10-05-2011 09:49 PM

I hate Apple, however I have an Ipod because it's abundant. If I ever broke/lost my charger there is a gas station in Austria in the middle of a mountain with one. That being said he was a great business guy even if i didn't like 99% of his stuff. Like Hitler. Never liked his views but he was good at implementing his.

pusha 10-05-2011 10:19 PM

That isn't a genuine pic of approval.

Vashthestampede 10-05-2011 10:31 PM

Disclaimer: I'm not an Apple "fan" by any means. My gf has a MAC and I hate using it, but I love my ipod and iphone.

This guy did more than most people will ever do and then some. Not only did he do something for himself, but he did something that has bettered so many lives in so many ways. He'll definitely live on with the Apple legacy. Such a smart fucking guy all around. Mad props to him.

To you losers saying "fuck him", "he did nothing for me", etc etc. Don't you have anything better to do than release your stupidity in the expression of words? I mean really. If that's all you have to say, you're a loser fuck that should just go crawl back into your hole. The guy just died from cancer.

curly 10-05-2011 10:57 PM

Sad day, I will devote my texts for today in his honor.

Saddest part is that he only resigned a few months ago. I hope he wasn't regretting that on his death bed. Devoted man.

While that may be YOUR path, I don't think that is quite what drove Steve. It wasn't a race to the finish so you could sit back and wither away. He loved Apple. It was his child and time spent building it was quality time.

Quote from his Stanford commencement address:

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
I think that he lived each day doing the things that were most precious to him.

Could we all be so lucky...

cool story bro.
maybe I'm ignorant, so why don't you explain it to me: whats cool about working non stop all your life then up and die and have all your efforts go to others?
I understand you want your family/kids to be set up and all that, but after you're "set" then what? you're telling me that doing work (no matter how cool it is) going to meetings, putting together presentations, lots of thinking/planning/decisions/projects brings PERSONAL satisfaction to people? So instead of doing awesome things, relaxing, vacationing, spending time w/ family/loved ones seeing the world, ETC ETC ETC you'd rather be working? no matter how cool your job is?

trickyrix 10-06-2011 12:41 AM

I thought an Apple a day kept the doctor away? Ooooh, hurts to miss that one...

jeff_man 10-06-2011 10:12 AM

You can tell the economy is shit when apple can't even keep jobs alive.

I will say i know see the genius steve jobs was. He scheduled his natural death on the day iphone 4s was coming out. best marking ever.

You live in Sacramento and like penises in your butt. That doesn't mean everyone else likes those things.

Reverant 10-06-2011 10:32 AM

Steve Jobs will be remembered as the person who pulled the biggest vendor lock-in schemes in IT history.

You want a Mac? It can only run Mac OS X
You want Mac OS X? It will only run on a Mac
You want an iPod? It will only work with iTunes
You want to listen songs you bought from the iTunes store? Only on the iPod and on iTunes
You want to download apps for your iPhone? Only from the iTunes app store

And the list goes on.

Actually, I think what's interesting about him is that he did those things and, for the most part, nobody cared.

Sony tried the same proprietary crap and it didn't sell because the end product wasn't that great.

Apple did it, at a higher price than its competitors, and couldn't meet demand because people were happy to be locked into the Apple world.

I understand that some, like yourself, might like the penises in their mouth too, which makes us completely different people with different tastes, but...

I was being serious.
If his answer to my question is: "yes, some people really do prefer those things and want nothing more in life but to work their ass off til they croak" then my mind will be blown.
That's just sad.

My dad is 70 and still works pouring concrete 6 days a week like a fucking champ. Why? Because he fucking WANTS to. I'll bet he could outwork your sorry ass any day of the week. Yet you have the nerve to say its sad?

Some people like to work. Some people take PRIDE in what they do. Others just live week to week, waiting for that pension so they can sit around on their ass and "retire". To me, that's sad.

This aint about your dad or his pension. You said yourself that if he wanted to stop he has absolutely nothing to fall back on. Therefore he has no choice. Might as well like what you're doing if you have no choice right?

You need to work to make money, but just because you have a "shitton" doesn't mean you shouldn't keep working. Just like opinions and assholes, ways of life are different as well.

You don't think that wasn't careful planned for months, maybe years?

The market reacted so negatively everytime he went to a doctor and/or sneezed. I'm sure they were all well aware of his health and expectancy and planned this carefully.

See thats the part I don't get and you guys keep getting butthurt about me questioning it.
Its not like this guy free'd the slaves or solved world hunger or cured cancer. Whats so enjoyable about busting ass til the day you die?
I'm not coming at it from a slacker/lazyass point of view just FYI. I been working since I was 15, and everyone in my family/friend circle is the same way. Never on any gubment assistance or any of that bullshit. So its not like I'm saying "make just enough to last til you die and then kick back".

Unless you're a true definition of "workaholic" I just don't understand how a job can give you PERSONAL pleasure (lol you fgts know what I mean).

I love my current job, its pretty awesome and I dont mind doing it til I'm 50-60 at all, but given the choice I'd much rather be traveling, climbing mountains, riding dirtbikes, etc etc etc 1000000000000 other fun/cool shit to do besides go to work......
Do you see where I'm coming from?

The sense of achievement that comes from having changed the world in a very palpable way.

I'm completely serious. Some folks see "work" just as something to pay for the other parts of their life. Others see it as a means to satisfy their desire for power, recognition, etc.

That said, I was a little surprised at how generous and fulsome the obits on the radio were being. I mean, props to Apple for bringing certain important technologies (the GUI, WYSIWYG, etc) out of the ivory tower and into the hands of the masses. But I'm not entirely certain it's fair to say, for instance, that the iMac was the world's first internet-enabled PC. I seem to recall being on the internet at least five years prior to its introduction. And did Jobs found Pixar? Well, he did purchase Pixar in '86 when they were on the verge of bankruptcy, but they already had several film credits under their belt by that time.

Anyway, not trying to piss on a man's grave.

I'm sorry but I have to take issue here. I recall in a past thread that you had to keep the business going because he couldn't afford to retire and couldn't get onto a crew somewhere else. I'm not digging back into that thread, but it comes to mind.

I don't know him but I would SUSPECT that, given the option and if he could afford it, he would choose to retire.

Props to him to be able to work like that but I'm doubting the motive.

Yes. That is true and we are still having issues with the company today.

My mom and dad had some bad investments over the years, thus they dont have an overflowing bank account. That doesnt mean he couldnt retire if he really wanted to. It's that he wants to keep working. He's afraid the arthritis will kick in even worse like it did to my uncles and kill him as well. He thinks if he stops working that he'll die basically. Financially he and my mom would probably be fine till the day they died, but they would have to change thier lifestyle a little to do so. It's 50/50 in the grand scheme of things.

What I don't think you get (and I do not mean this as an insult), is that he wasn't busting his ass or "working" all day, he was doing what he LOVED to do. He was a nerd, and electronic stuff WAS his hobby/fun. He wasn't an employee working for money (iirc he paid himself $1/year salary, but I could be wrong), he was the boss of a cutting edge electronics company able to do what he wanted. And to his credit, he tried to make nerdy computer stuff/electronics easier to use for the general public (not the leet nerds who always complain) and to make it easier for people to access the internet and connect with each other. I mean hell my 3 year old son and 80 year old granddad can actually use his products without looking at a manual and enjoy themselves.

As an example, if your "job" was that you were the boss of a hugely successful car related company with access to the best designers/equipment/etc..., and all you did all day was work on making the stuff you dream about an actual product, would it really be work at that point?

Before you call me an apple fanboiiiii, ironically enough, my cell phone contract is up, and I'm on my way out to get an android phone today, but their stuff does make it easy for the non-nerds out there, which = 95%+ of the population. I mean hell, at a training for this new job (for a very respected company) I started last year, there was a thirty minute session on the difference between reply and reply all (I swear to god), so I think it says something about the general public's computer saavy. :2cents:

rleete 10-06-2011 12:41 PM

I work as a means to fund my life. Work stops the second I step out the door.

Not that I don't enjoy it; I actually do engineering on my own time, purely because I do like to do it. But if I had enough money, I'd never "work" again.

Apparently, Jobs wasn't like that, because he had more money than he could possibly spend. Something else drove him. That is as alien to me as just about anything I can think of.

But he was successful at it, so you gotta hand it to him for that much. Love or hate Apple products, he certainly knew how to get people to buy his stuff.
