Midterms see rise in split-ticket voting

This year’s midterm election has seen a rise in split-ticket voting, with voters electing state governors and senators with opposite parties.

For example, in Wisconsin, voters elected a Democratic governor and a Republican senator and, in New Hampshire, voters elected a Republican governor and a Democratic senator.

NewsNation’s Leland Vittert joined Morning in America, saying that political scientists and journalists have loved this concept for decades, and now, it is finally happening.

Vittert explained that it’s the idea that the candidate might matter more than the party they represent.

“In each one of these cases, it’s something different. The one theme that we see this being more consistent, where you see these big margins — New Hampshire, Ohio, Georgia — is where you’ve got a very Trumpy Senate candidate on the Senate side and a kind of traditional MAGA-agnostic, Republican governor on the governor side,” Vittert said. “That’s where we’re seeing the most pronounced ticket-splitting. And that speaks to exactly the issues that we’ve been talking about all along, which is, what type of conservatism are people willing to vote for.”

He explained that the more moderate-seeming Democrat won against the more firebrand Republican with the split-ticket idea.

“It seems to have more to do with a feel of a level of comfort and in a sense, sort of MAGA anger than it does the actual policies,” Vittert said.

He said that it turns out that more people cared about abortion and threats to democracy rather than voting on economic issues.

Everyone believed Elizabeth Holmes until they didn't.

ohh jeez willikers, this really interesting phenomena is happening that corresponds directly with the increased of rampant ballot harvesting / cheating in the same places where it was suspect two years ago. so coincidental! must be Trump.

The fact that you cannot imagine yourself voting for individual candidates based on the merits of their positions, rather than just a straight party-line ticket, does not mean that no one else can.

Of course, it might all just be a conspiracy. That's certainly easier / more comforting to believe.

Elizabeth Holmes... Man, don't get me started on that one. She's even dialed way back on the makeup since the trial. I'd allow myself to be defrauded by her.

There are no Democrats whose positions have merits.

Unfortunately, that's also true of most incumbent Republicans.

The truth of it is that we are all screwed. The money machine that is the .gov will not allow their apple cart to be overturned.

:bowrofl:

Ok, that's true. But a lot of people don't agree. They think that a politician promising to do "X," or to prevent others from doing "X," is something worth voting for.

I'm confused by that statement. Isn't that exactly what campaigning is all about? Telling people your plans once you get elected? That you do or don't do it is something else.

Katie Hobbs never campaigned.

She refused to debate Keri Lake

CNN even called her out on it.

But Democratic strategist Adrienne Elrod said it’s smart for Hobbs to stand down from a debate with Lake. “Hobbs has been strategically engaging in a mix of local and national media, and taking her campaign to communities throughout the state where she’s effectively made her case to voters. Given the candidate she is running again, I think her tack is sound and strategic.”

Hobbs has argued that the debate issue isn’t salient to voters anyway. “I guarantee you that people who are struggling in Arizona right now are not making their decisions over whether or not there was a debate between myself and Kari Lake,” she told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” on Sunday.

But not all her supporters are so sure.

Cindy Ika, a registered Democrat, could hear Lake’s costumed chicken protesters outside a Hobbs phone banking event she was attending last week.

“I wish she would debate,” Ika said. “If you can’t get your voice out because (your opponent) is constantly interrupting – like Trump did with Hillary Clinton (in the 2016 presidential race) –that’s very hard to compete against that. I understand that.”

But she said that kind of on-stage matchup could be helpful in elucidating the choice before voters.

Ika, looking through the glass of Hobbs’ campaign event at the chicken protesters, warned that not directly challenging Lake could impact the small number of undecided voters in Arizona.

“It does send a message.”
The polls were all in Lake's favor.

on election day, many R counties were reporting issues immediately.
some were running out of ink and couldnt print even ballots
some the
and you had to eventually put your unscanned ballot into box #3
D counties didn't seem to report any issues

slow counting (we are on day 9 and they aren't finished)
tons of people checking their vote online saying it's still uncounted.

R counties has 2% more R votes than average.
In person voting was ~83% in favor of the not D.

Hobbs certifies her own election results.

But tell me more about how the stupidest subset of humans are now suddenly so enthralled with merits, so much so in fact , that 40,000 more people voted for the governor (2,536,625) (who didn't campaign or debate) over the senator (2,496,295). But 60,000 of those voters didn't feel like they knew the merits of the treasurer (2,475,856) enough to vote for her and abstained -- who eventually goes on and wins +6 points over the R governor candidate...

Why is it you who cannot imagine that the sudden increase of unregulated massive fraud-prevalent, unauditable, unverifiable, non-signature-matching, "all votes count," mail-in voting and ballot harvesting in the past few elections could be the cause of this new "sudden interest" in the merits of candidates positions which is causing split-ticket voting for the first time in American history?Mail-in ballots and ballot harvesting should be illegal. Ds are abusing the "COVID emergency" (many broke the law in order to do so but the rulings were moot) to essentially mail out as many legitimate ballots as possible into their counties, then unleash hoards to go back an collect them. Every vote counts, it doesn't matter who fills it out, collects it, mails it in, signs it, etc. every vote counts. If you suggest that maybe this is the fact, youre not allowed to look into it and confirm everything is on the up and up -- you're a white nationalist domestic terrorist if you do. But regardless on the validity/fraud or not, it's introducing votes into the system where people ultimately would not have participated reshaping government/policies based on people who ultimately didn't want to participate.

But tell me more about how important "threats to democracy" are. Do you think an average voter can even define what that means?

Also, Ukraine has attacked a NATO country. Do we invade Ukraine now?

I mean Zalensky himself even urged NATO to act now!!!

We already did in 2014 which is why we are in this mess to begin with.

did you miss the reference?

Missiles hit Poland the other day.

Zalenski said:

Turns out they were Ukrainian missiles that hit Poland. So NATO still must act on this terrorist, right? Or do we just give him another 37 billion?

FWIW, inciting war is a violation of the Kellogg-Briand Pact.

oh no I didn't. I was pointing out there is not need to invade a client state which we have already taken over.
