Who really cares whether the current president's wife traveled forward 9 years into the future to retroactively plagiarize a speech which will have been given by the wife of the republican presidential nominee?

(describing the past-future-tense is hard.)

I think it is a bit overblown, but Trump's campaign should do a bit better then that.

God dammit, we both fucked up...

Ms. Trump, Monday night:

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily lives. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

Mrs. Obama, in her 2008 speech:

“Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them. And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

Ms. Trump:

“I was born in Slovenia, a small, beautiful and then-Communist country in Central Europe. My sister, Ines, who is an incredible woman and a friend, and I were raised by my wonderful parents. My elegant and hard-working mother, Amalija, introduced me to fashion and beauty. My father, Viktor, instilled in me a passion for business and travel. Their integrity, compassion and intelligence reflects to this day on me and for my love of family and America.

Mrs. Obama, in 2008:

“And I come here as a daughter — raised on the South Side of Chicago by a father who was a blue-collar city worker and a mother who stayed at home with my brother and me. My mother’s love has always been a sustaining force for our family, and one of my greatest joys is seeing her integrity, her compassion and her intelligence reflected in my own daughters.

Much ado about nothing. There are only so many words available to convey various thoughts. Joe Perez says exactly what I was ready to type many times, but he is much quicker than I. Except for the pony things.......

in short, yes. The bigger picture is a push towards broad spectrum progressivism, and they will take anything they can get to move the bar.

While I agree it's overblown in coverage, that is clear plagiarism. If Trump's campaign came out and just said something along the lines of "we reviewed many speeches in preparing Malinda's remarks and we accidentally included a passage very similar to Ms Obama's" it would be a non-issue.

One thing about Trump--Melania's speech just got 10x the press it otherwise would have garnered. Just like Obama, at some point these stop being coincidences.

If you dig deep enough, you'll find that George Soros is also one of the major financial backers of Pokemon Go. Isn't it interesting that that game was released at just the right moment to distract us from the fact that the US presidential race is basically split between a felon and a moron, the President of Turkey is setting himself up to become a dictator, the EU is destabilizing rapidly, and Russia is about to become a communist superpower again.

Not that that's any of my business.

Turkish mayor calls for a ‘graveyard for traitors’ behind failed coup

By Ishaan Tharoor July 21 at 3:00 AM

Attachment 237458
Family members of detained Turkish soldiers wait in front of the Istanbul Justice Palace.

Kadir Topbas, the mayor of Istanbul's metropolitan municipality, has declared his intent to create a separate plot to bury the corpses of soldiers who died while attempting a coup last week that ultimately failed.

“I ordered a space to be saved and to call it ‘the graveyard for traitors.' The passersby will curse the ones buried there," Topbas is quoted by Hurriyet Daily News as telling a group of supporters on Tuesday evening. "Everyone visiting the place will curse them and they won’t be able to rest in their graves."

About 20 military personnel linked to the coup are thought to have been killed in clashes with loyalist security forces in the late hours of Friday night. A total of about 240 people died, including dozens of civilians who had challenged the coup-makers in Istanbul, Turkey's biggest city, and Ankara, the capital.

As has become customary in Muslim-majority countries in the wake of terrorist attacks and other violence, authorities announced that the dead "putschists" — as the pro-coup troops are being called — would not receive proper Islamic burials. The country's main religious body, the Diyanet, said it would make exceptions for soldiers who had been "forcibly dragged" into the mutiny.

The decrees are an echo of the prevailing mood in Turkey, where backers of the government mass in public spaces for nightly rallies, while the government continues a sweeping purge of the state's institutions that has implicated tens of thousands.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has indicated that he would support the reinstatement of the death penalty should it be authorized by parliament, where his party holds a majority of seats.

Topbas seems, in particular, to capture the nationalist anger of the moment.

“I believe that they won’t be saved from hell. But we need [to] make the world unbearable for them,” he said, referring to the soldiers who attempted the coup.

Oh me too. I hope the country gets so bad that the property prices go down to scraps like they were when obama first took office. Apartments in my area were selling for 30-40k at that time.
