I don't agree.

Much like evangelical Christianity, being opposed to vaccinations means that one is already ignoring well-established scientific fact and making important decisions on the basis of emotion, superstition, and positive reinforcement from a carefully selected group of like-minded others.

If you observe public-facing aspects of the anti-vax movement, you can see that they've shifted from fearing that vaccines cause autism to fearing that vaccinates cause death, weaken the immune system, cause allergies, etc. Basically, they adapted their argument from one which had been pretty clearly refuted to one which has not yet been conclusively refuted. And I have no doubt that, like the influenza virus, their arguments will continue to evolve over time.

And I see a strong parallel here to the present state of political discourse, especially when dealing with highly polarizing figures such as Trump. Those with strong opinions about Trump (either positive or negative) tend to surround themselves with information and opinions which reinforce their beliefs, and when one of those beliefs is disproven, it will be modified, or a new one created to take its place.

BREAKING NEWS: HOUSE DEMOCRATS VOTE TO APPROVE SUBPOENA FOR UNREDACTED MUELLER REPORT
by Kevin Ryan

The House Judiciary Committee has voted to authorize a subpoena for special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, unredacted, as well as all underlying evidence at a business meeting Wednesday morning. There is believed to be millions of pages of documents related to the 300+ page report.

Attorney General William Barr told lawmakers late last week that officials were on track to release the report with legally required redactions within the next two weeks or earlier. Existing law prohibits the release of any grand jury information or classified material, which the report is said to contain a significant amount of. Intelligence gathered on Russian operations to interfere with the 2016 election, for example, was likely compiled by confidential sources and/or electronic means, the public revelation of which would compromise those methods.

House Democrats are nevertheless demanding the immediate release of Mueller’s entire report — with NO redactions. Opponents of the Trump administration have been insinuating that Barr will use redactions to hide any information proving Trump/Russia collusion. Trump supporters point out that it’s unlikely that Robert Mueller, who is working with Barr to redact the report, would go along with any scheme by the attorney general to hide incriminating material.

The announcement of an impending House subpoena sets up a showdown between the Justice Department and House Democrats over release of the report without redactions.
this:

So basically we are going to unseal Grand Jury testimony, reveal classified intelligence and compromise sources? Sounds like a brill ant plan. But in truth it is. Democrats will Subpoena the report. They know the DOJ will fight it to comply with law and likely win. Democrats will then say "Hah look they are hiding something. We need another investigation!"
also this:

why don't the DNC put out an unredacted JFK report the democrats been hiding for 60 years first?

this whole russia thing is like when im caught in a lie, and i just double down.

Joe Perez 04-03-2019 12:14 PM

@BGordon , a perfect example above. Braineack is obviously very strongly anti-Democrat, so he's already postulating the existence of a conspiracy within the DNC to create an event (the DOJ not complying with their demands) which will engender negative publicity for the Trump administration and serve as fodder for future speculation and demands for additional witch-hunting.

Nothing is going to change Brainey's opinion on this, just as nothing is going to convince an anti-vax mom that vaccines are safe and beneficial, nor convince my mother that two of every single animal species* in the world did not all converge at a single point on earth for a nice boat ride a few thousand years ago.

* = and not just two elephants and two penguins, but two of every single sub-type of elephant and every single breed of penguin, since evolution does not exist.

OK Joe.
Guess you are right.
I tried to give too much smarts to the anti-vaccine crowd.
......but......
I do stand by my opinion that the hard heads on both sides of the Trump Conspiracy thing are beating a bloated stinking dead horse.

Oh, no question there. This is evidenced by the memes which Brainey floods this thread with every day or two. He clearly visits sites which provide him with memes that positively reinforce his hatred for / suspicion of Democrats, and generally doesn't contribute a lot of actual commentary of analysis, preferring to just repeat the memes and opinions which his anti-democratic opinion-makers have told him to think.

Which is basically the exact same thing that happens at the extreme-left of the spectrum. People mindlessly re-blogging #FightForFifteen, #MeToo, #OrangeManBad, and other such maxims, without any real comprehension of what the messages mean. No one is going to convince Freda Fishmouth that:

  • Orange man is not literally Hitler.
  • Wearing a red cap does not mean you are a member of the Nazi party.
  • Gender is a binary construct, determined by genetics.
  • Saying "Your hair looks nice like that" is not a form of rape.
  • Referring to a person with a penis as "he" is not a form of assault.
  • A gender-studies degree isn't just as valid as an Engineering degree.

These are not basic truths, or even well-informed opinions. They are something more akin to evangelical religious beliefs, both in their lack of validity and also in the assumption that since they are unimpeachably true and morally right, they must be forced onto others as the law of the land.

This is what it's like when you try to use facts and logic to convince someone with deeply-held superstitious beliefs of reality:

I still like the memes that The Brain (my affectionate nickname for Braineack) comes up with cause they are entertaining and I don't frequent those places on the internet.
Lots are even potentially educational.

Take for example the latest story that he quoted.
After reading it I have a basis for watching what happens in that arena over the next few weeks and see how it plays out.
If it plays out the way the article implies The Brain becomes the prophet who showed us a glimpse of the future.
If it goes some other direction there are always other plots to be uncovered and his ability to predict the future takes a small hit.

My personal attempt at prophesy is that Hillary has been positioning herself to horn into being the Vice Presidential candidate for the Democrats in 2020.
Since I consider myself a middle of the road Democrat / liberal Republican that possibility pisses me off and would force me to vote against whomever is stupid enough to associate themselves with that crook.

I least I have clear, factual, information to base my decision on.

I'd post a leftist meme every now and again, but the left cant meme, so....

Over-the-Counter Birth Control Bill Launched by Senate Republicans

It would fast-track FDA review of applications to free the pill from prescriptions and let people use health savings accounts for non-Rx drugs.

A new proposal in the U.S. Senate would help federal regulators fast-track the approval process for converting hormonal contraceptive pills from prescription to over-the-counter drug status. Known as the "Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act," it was introduced this week by Republican Sens. Joni Ernst (R–Iowa) and Cory Gardner (R–Colo.).

Only the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can approve the conversion, upon request from a petitioning drug maker. That's why recent movements to "free the pill" in states such as California and Oregon have only been able to dismantle the requirement for a doctor to write the prescription. Now women in these states can theoretically get a prescription on the spot from pharmacists, but it's still not the over-the-counter sales situation that public health bodies recommend.

Hunt for gang who ransacked knife amnesty bin

Police are on the hunt for a group who broke into a bin full of knives that had just been surrendered.

The suspects were caught on CCTV hauling the weapons collected by police as part of a knife amnesty.

Officers installed the ‘knife surrender bin’ following a 52 per cent spike in knife crime across area over the past year.

But a day later the bin in Weston-super-Mare was broken into and the knives were taken.

See, the interesting thing is that I fully believe that you fully believe that this is true. And that just as every church believes that it's the only one worshiping God properly, you genuinely believe that you are making decisions based on clear, factual information*.

See, that's what I'm talking about. It's like that scene in Ghostbusters, where they've got Zuul wired up to the brain-scanner, and Egon says "She's telling the truth. At least, she thinks she is."

Absolute conviction of righteousness.
