We lost an active mt.net member and miata enthuziast last night. Roy was riding shotgun in his own turboed miata when it left the road and he passed due to head trauma.

Local story on the incident is here:

Here is another news story with some additional information.

nitrodann 12-20-2013 08:15 AM

*sadkitty*

At least he was in his pride and joy car, better than in a nursing home.

Tekel 12-20-2013 08:17 AM

While we all enjoy our cars and our lives, one can quickly end the other. Rest in peace good sir.

shuiend 12-20-2013 08:19 AM

If anyone in the Knoxville area has his wife's or families contact and could get it to me it would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get a card sent out from the mt.net community.

RedCarmel 12-20-2013 08:23 AM

Very sad news. RIP sir.

Lars,
I will forward Roy's mailing address to Scott's email (I'm not sure I have your email address Lars).

Fireindc 12-20-2013 09:16 AM

Damn, what a bummer. We all know the consequences, and I'm sure he did too. Glad the young girl lived at least.

RIP.

Fireindc 12-20-2013 09:19 AM

Looking at his signature, it looks like he had quite the car:

94M, 9:1, 84 mm, H-rods, VVT head, JDM intake, FM crossflow, BEGI reroute, 525 cc, f.rail, f.pump, ACT 6-puck, MSPNP1+VCM, LS2, AEM W/B & boost, FCM 400/275 Bilsteins, 27 mm tubular, 6ULs 15x8, Toyo R1R, HDDD, BEGi 2860, 3" duals - 282hp/259tq [mustang dyno]

I wonder what his relation to the younger girl was, and why she was driving?

Reverant 12-20-2013 09:28 AM

Wow, just wow. He was a great customer.

Rest in peace. :sadwavey:

Scott got it to me. Thanks a lot. I will pick up a card today at lunch and get it sent out.

I hope this is not disrespectful, if it is definitely remove the image. but..

Such a sad day. I found mr sheely on facebook and the guy lived and breathed miatas, I spend all day every day on this board and I don't think I come close to him as far as the hobby goes. He will be missed.

mgeoffriau 12-20-2013 10:32 AM

Damn. That second article was paywalled, but the first few sentences said the car went down a 30 foot embankment before hitting the tree.

18psi 12-20-2013 10:36 AM

WOWWWW that is so terrible.

RIP

looks like the pass. side of the car hit the tree about 5-6' up...

NA6C-Guy 12-20-2013 11:20 AM

I hate hearing about anybody leaving us. Hopefully it was quick and painless for him. That does look like one hell of a wreck.

Also, looks like he was a Vietnam Veteran, going by his tag.

The link I posted was for Local 8 Now - Home - News Sports Weather. If you look on their front page you should be able to find a non-paywall link to it.

Godless Commie 12-20-2013 11:26 AM

May he rest in peace.

hornetball 12-20-2013 11:49 AM

My sincere condolences.

Chiburbian 12-20-2013 12:06 PM

My condolences. No matter how he went, it is a certainly a loss to both his family and our community as a whole.

Drive safe!

EO2K 12-20-2013 12:13 PM

Oh man, no bueno. Condolences to the family and friends. This is never a good thing, but this time of year makes it even tougher.

About the address: I think I may have his address somewhere actually. Not that I stalk you people or anything, but we were broken Rotrex bros and traded parts and PMs here and on M.net. He wised up and went turbo, and was one of the reasons I ended up doing the same. Frostyllama left him some iTrader feedback on 11/12/13 so he may still have his address if all else fails.

Godspeed Roy.

Edit: NVM, I see Ben got it

dieselmiata 12-20-2013 12:39 PM

Terrible news, just before the holidays. My condolences to the family.

sixshooter 12-20-2013 01:09 PM

Very sad.

I am reminded how easily that could have been me a few years ago. Part of the thrill is the risk but it is a pretty big risk.

Godspeed.

dieselmiata 12-20-2013 01:45 PM

I was just thinking about this, and I hope what I say doesn't come across as insensitive, but I think it's good that he went doing something he loved. So many people wind up in "homes" wasting away for the remainder of their time. He got to go before any of that could happen to him, and for that I think he is lucky.

Someone once said something along the lines of "The object is not to greet Saint Peter in perfect condition. I intend to crash through the pearly gates sliding backwards on the cars roof and on fire."

Seefo 12-20-2013 01:46 PM

My condolences to the family. RIP.

That's my wish as well. Or something to that same extent.

shuiend 12-20-2013 02:32 PM

A card has been sent out to his wife saying that he will be missed from the mt.net community.

It is sad that somebody from the community died; however, US 129 is not a place to test your luck. TN has reduced the speed limit from the federal 55mph down to 35mph and it's heavily enforced; however, people do wind up in uh... less than ideal situations. Given the road and terrain, the margin for anything that resembles an error is extremely small.

It's a fun road to drive, but everybody here should (know to) keep it on the track and to try to encourage others to do the same. It's our responsibility to keep the roads safe on the enthusiast's side of things.

Amellrotts 12-20-2013 04:49 PM

Speed was not a factor. It really was a fluke accident where everything came together to make for a tragic incident. He was teaching the young girl, who was a long time friend of the family, how to drive. Four miatas went out for a leisurely drive, all having passengers. The girl made a small simple mistake that ultimately put them off the shoulder, in a area where there was not a shoulder and over the bank. It is very sad, Roy was a great guy.

Lars, Thank you for sending the card.

Pen2_the_penguin 12-20-2013 04:53 PM

This is very sad, RIP Roy.

Condolences to the family, he seemed like a great guy

Impuls 12-20-2013 05:17 PM

That's really sad :/ a sad loss of our community.
Toyo R1R and losing it very strange but almost 300hp, The roll bar held up! But I'm thinking from the passenger side hitting that tree is what did it.

We could start a fund or something for the family if need be? No one really plans for these things.

05pearl 12-20-2013 07:01 PM

Sorry to hear this. I lived in Knoxville for almost half of my life so it hits home a bit for me. Prayers to his family and friends.

Kyle! 12-20-2013 08:58 PM

RIP

Supe 12-20-2013 09:26 PM

Very sad to see the Dragon claim another life, especially an MT member. It's a very real reminder of why I chose to put my car out of commission to make substantial safety improvements.

RIP Roy.

flier129 12-20-2013 09:51 PM

He will be sorely missed. Thursday was such a weird day. Got a text from another local about a miata going off and there were injuries. Put it up on southeast miatas FB page and found out a group of guys I ride around with went up that day. It was an extreme shock to find out about the wreck, let alone Roy passing later in the day.

Few facts that news reporters suck at.....

It was on MM 10, not 2. The girl is 18-19, not 21. The bark missing on the tree is level with the road, they didn't go air-born. There's others that I'm missing :-\

Also, I considered Roy a good friend. I could always go to him with crazy, non-sensible, expensive turbo/rotrex/whatever ideas and he would support me! He was a really genuine guy, when some local miata club drama happened and it split into two clubs he was one of the only people to be involved with both clubs without anyone caring.

From my understanding, he was teaching the girl how to down-shift properly. Left hand on wheel right hand on the shifter when this happened. Turned in hard for the sharp turn, hand got stuck on her knee, and a panic situation happened :(. It was terrible luck the way it happened, speed wasn't even a factor.

miata2fast 12-21-2013 12:21 AM

My heart goes out to his family, and I hope the girl will be ok. I know the pain will be much more than physical for her. It is a very tough and sad situation.

hustler 12-21-2013 09:41 AM

This is sad.

RayinNorCal 12-21-2013 12:23 PM

Very sad indeed. My prayers go out to both his family and the young girl. She's probably going to have a hard time accepting it was an accident rather than her being at fault. I hope she will be ok in time.

GeneSplicer 12-22-2013 09:09 AM

Prayers and condolences to his family, RIP Roy.
Thanks Lars for sending out the card.

DNMakinson 12-22-2013 07:14 PM

My condolences. I agree and good thought to pray for the driver as well. Amellrotts, thanks for the additional info.

TorqueZombie 12-23-2013 12:14 AM

Very sad. Thanks for sending thew card. Feel bad for her though as well. Getting over the "should have been me" or "what have I done" is really hard. Condolences to all involved.

flier129 12-23-2013 07:56 AM

I was told that Tiffany, the young girl, got released this weekend and is at home recovering.

Well if anyone has contact with her give her some consolation that others understand a bit. It is a sad loss, but no reason to lose two to the tragedy.

Scrappy Jack 12-26-2013 10:06 AM

Lars, et al. - Thanks for getting the card out.

Most people should plan for unexpected deaths. If you have financial obligations that could end up being a burden on a loved one if you passed, you should have some planning in place.

Typically, that's life insurance when you are younger and/or with more debt (e.g. a mortgage, student loans, future college tuition for kids, etc) and retirement savings when you are older and have fewer obligations.

Sometimes tragedies like this are a good reminder to look at our own situations and see if there is anything we need to do to better get our own affairs in order.

Braineack 12-26-2013 11:45 AM

start with Gerber life insurance, because you always need more money to pay the bills when you newborn kicks the bucket.

sorry not in good taste, but i think that Gerber baby life insurance is a scam and I feel bad for the people who pay into it thinking they are doing something good.

In some cases it can be a good idea. On the edge heath if a new born on top of the mountain of bills for the birth..
Other then that, I totally agree. They feed off of new parents fears. Yay corporations! Sorry it's off topic.

So then we won't be doing anything for the family/friends? Hell maybe the local people can do a meet/cruise through the Tail the Dragon.

flier129 12-26-2013 08:33 PM

They've place a black ribbon on the RAGS sign on the gap. We've done trash pick-up on the last 2 miles for 10+ years and Roy has joined many many times.

I know it's a long ways away but I plan on doing something to honor Roy for MATG this summer.

Also Jason, a good friend of Roy's and mine, set up a fund raiser for Roy's family. Feel free to donate! https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/bfJp1...acebook.com%2F

phillyb 01-08-2014 04:15 PM

rip indeed.
sucks to have shit like this happen, especially for what seems to be an actual "accident" and not some poor driving.

Der_Idiot 01-10-2014 04:03 AM

RIP man, he's driving the legendary 98 miata in the foreversky.

I'd like to think we can learn something from this; do we know if there was any amount of safety measures he could have implemented that could have prevented this? Or did the car hit the tree sideways? I can't tell from the above image. ..
