20 bucks Turbo heat shield

Well here it is. I went to home depot and bought a nice big 12x24 piece of Aluminum - $9.xx.
I was thinking fo wrapping it around and over the turbo but i settled on this design due to its simplicity and i wanted to leave some air for the turbo to get some ventilation at least from the radiator fans red = area completely removed from sheet blue = fold line blue circle = bolt Attachment 202521 Attachment 202522 Attachment 202523 Attachment 202524 Attachment 202525 Attachment 202526 Also 1 question, When bending the metal pipe that goes underneath the headers/manifold for the heater hoses, i crushed it a little bit. Will that be a problem? Its not penetrated however its crushed a bit. after further talk in this thread, i decided to add a top to my heat shield which doubled the price of it however its still less than half the price to the next alternative from the store/internet. if i had done this out of the car the folds would have been on the inside and looked much better but i got lazy few pics of my top cover Attachment 202527 Attachment 202528 Attachment 202529 |

Looks like it's only bolted to the chassis, not the engine? So that when the engine rocks the shield doesn't move--I take it you have plenty of clearance so no hoses/wires will rub up against it and chafe.

I have it tied to the last bolt at the valve cover until i get a longer piece of metal so i can tie it to another place.
There is about half an inch of room between the downpipe and the shield and there is about an inch of room between the turbo and the shield and about half an inch of room between the coolant fitting and the shield. In the front its held by the bolt that holds the ps fluid bottle and the 2 other bolts that hold the stock air box, in the middle is tied to the bolts that hold the bracket that held my windows washer bottle and at the end its held to the block via that bracket on that last pic however i'll move it to the body tomorrow since i'll get some more of the metal shin i need. What i like about this is that it doesnt need any special screws or anything new drilled, it uses all the old holes and stuff. I'm also thinking of buying a rubber line and cutting it on one side and putting it on top so it doesnt have that sharp edge. |
Bolt it to the chassis or the engine. Not both. Recommend chassis.

I've seen something like this before......Oh right, its been on my car for 4 months.
Also, I have 0 issues with my paint. However, all the glued points on the under frame of the hood have come undone from the heat. Luckily its welded on the perimeter. |

My first design was similar to the FM box however i changed my mind since i wanted to block the direct air going to the heater hoses.
Any info about the metal pipe i pinched? |

which one? my heatshield i made above in the 1st post or the flux capacitor? In the mourning, on my way to work, the hood was very frozen. When i got there i checked it out. Around the turbo it was dry, over the engine block it was melted, on the other side of the wall i made by the air filter. It was still ice like it was before i even started the car. You could see where the heatshield is at. There was a fine line between the dry and the frozen part on the hood.

The flux Capacitor was never designed to be bolted to both the engine and the Chassis at the same time. 88 MPH can easily become 103 MPH with a little fudge. LOL.
