Default 28x5.5x2.5 intercooler

I have a 94 with AC and PS. I'm going to keep them both. I'm thinking about getting this kit:

eBay Motors: CXRacing Intercooler 28x5.5x2.5 + 2" Turbo Piping Kit (item 390035287406 end time Mar-12-09 14:15:00 PDT)

My questions are:

1. What are the downsides to an intercooler this size (I've heard something about cooling issues).

2. Does anyone have pictures of an install of this IC? I've seen one here, but I want to get an idea of what I'm going to have to change with regards to the AC.

Thanks for your pics.

Tony

Have a look at the two pipes in the bottom of the picture. They look like they are crush bent and are losing volume at the turn. The rest look fine though. Am I seeing that right?

Pretty sure that most are using 2.5" piping not 2".

What are you planing on using the car for, the track, or daily driver, and what are your power goals. If you have big power goals and use it on the track you may want something bigger.

It's mainly a daily driver, with some spirited canyon (mountain) runs. I'm hoping to get something near 200hp. I think it's doable with the setup I'm putting in (e-manage, 330 injectors and a GT25r). The reason I'm going with the 2" piping is for ease of installation with the PS and the AC. 2.5" is more popular and I'd prefer it, but I think it would be a nightmare to route. I've also read some forum entries where Corky had done some math and stated that you could get by with 2" charge tubes (even as small as 1.75), so I'm not worried about that (really, who would know better).

I would go ahead and get a 28x7x2.5. It's a very popular fit for people running the Mazdaspeed Miata and it's plenty big for up to 260 rwhp.

eBay Motors: 28x7x2.5 FMIC TURBO FRONT INTERCOOLER AUDI TT A4 1.8T (item 330312722528 end time Mar-09-09 18:45:10 PDT)

What Cody said^

At 28" wide, you can slap on 90* couplers and point straight back just clearing the sides of the radiator. The coldside is easy. You need a 90* pipe bend to get behind the radiator, and another 90* coupler to point straight up to the TB. 2.5" is no problem on the coldside.

There are 20 ways to skin the hotside, none of them pretty if you're keeping your AC/PS. Get a universal pipe kit and a box of various couplers and mix&match&cut until something suitable fits. Sell the leftovers... TRUST ME, people will buy all your leftover pipes&stuff.

There is a recent thread on how to make a home-made bead-roller. And of course use t-bolt clamps.

2" piping is fine, but most of the IC's in the size-range you want are 2.5" openings. You can make 2.5" fit, lotsa people do.

I run 2" on the hotside to the IC, then jump to 2.5 just before I enter the IC. Coldside is 2.5".
